[attr="class","skullbody"]It was a beautiful night in the Rocket sub, and Isaac was sleeping like a baby.[break][break]

For many Rockets, the Sub was practically their home. Who needed a place to live that could end up being League compromised and subject to pesky investigations when instead you could just live out at sea? It was one of the few times where Rocket members could drop their guards some, rest peacefully, and let the stress of a day roll off of their shoulders. Sure, Isaac still slept with his door locked. But that was for privacy, y'know?[break][break]

It was also easily circumventable by a particularly intelligent monkey.[break][break]

With the exception of a single Pokemon kept outside of their ball to serve as a lookout (Kiryu today, but Watson or Vivi tended to be other frequent picks), the remaining 8 were safely tucked away in their Pokeballs. It was nothing personal. There just wasn't any space in this cozy little dorm to let the whole crew out. Despite this, Isaac kept them safe in his nightstand, close to arm's reach and for others to snatch.[break][break]

Or, in the case of a particularly intelligent monkey, fairly easily.[break][break]

Though, why even consider such a hypothetical? In what possible circumstance would a particularly intelligent monkey just break into the Rocket Sub, find Isaac's room, and start causing him a world of trouble?[break][break]

And why would that monkey have a helping hand in doing so?

All is well at Rocket HQ… Until it is not. But, this time, the change is subtle and meant for one grunt alone.

Highly irregular, unexpected, and occurring without a sound, the pokéballs containing Isaac Merlo’s precious pokémon begin to roll off his nightstand one by one. They form a net row, psychic power pushing them towards the now-ajar door, and at the other side of it, a dark eye encircled by a golden ring watches it all – the eye of the one responsible for this act of thievery.

Not that far from the dorms, one of Rocket’s underbosses patiently waits, leaning against the cold steel wall and looking at his watch. He’s not usually at HQ this late, he should be back home, but work has made it so he finds himself here tonight, and he has always been of the mind of using his time as effectively as possible.

The "you're finally an award winning actor and also six and a half feet tall" dream should've never been a tense one. It was Isaac's happy place, damnit! However, even as he indulged in the luxuries and excesses of the dream world, he couldn't help but feel that something was . . . off. Whenever he tried to put a finger to the doubts, he couldn't pinpoint why they were there. That only served to make them stronger.[break][break]

Seriously, what was going on here? Did he eat a bad slice of pie? Was one of the many blows he'd taken on his adventures starting to do a little internal bleeding? Or was this metaphorical-gut, not physical-gut? Ugh, with everything he'd been worrying about lately, it could've been anything in that case. Meeting people he cared about was really making the whole cool and unaffected act hard to keep up, damnit![break][break]

It only grew worse. It only grew colder and heavier as it ran through his gut. He could feel a shiver down his spine and a cold sweat on his brow. Ugh. No. This was all wrong. He couldn't enjoy the Virbank media circuits like this. Abort mission, abort mission. End the dream and start over. Isaac bit down on the inside of his cheek, hoping the jolt of pain would nudge him awake.[break][break]

Good news: it did! Bad news: ow! Worse news: his Pokeballs were marching out the door, one by one, like a row of soldier ants. One of these observations was not like the others. Maybe he should actually get on that. Shaking his head and rubbing out the blurry visage of sleep, Isaac decided to tackle the problem at the root; his door.[break][break]

SLAM! The door was shut, and the problem was solved. Now Isaac could tend to his 5 Pokemon in peace, make sure they were okay, and then get back to-[break][break]

Five?[break][break]

Isaac did a double take, drawing his Pokeballs and counting them up. One, two, three, four, five. Five Pokeballs. Who the hell stole half of his Pokemon while he was away!? Isaac glowered, donning his belt and strapping the Pokeballs in real type so they wouldn't be going anywhere. Now Kiryu's empty ball, still ajar, sat alone on the nightstand. That meant, after giving her a quick shake awake, Isaac would at least have a full team of six on him.[break][break]

Maybe the best thing to do now would be some investigating. Isaac slowly pried the door open, then began to quietly creep out of his room. Or, at least, that's what he thought he was doing. It was really more of a sleepy, sleepy shuffle, but finding his missing Pokemon couldn't wait on the morning caffeine.[break][break]

In his lethargic hunt, Isaac may notice a flash of white fur taking a turn at the very end of the long corridor. It would happen again and again, the culprit always somehow seeming just fast enough to stay out of his reach. Is it trying to escape or is it leading him somewhere?

Pass the dorms, out of the west wing, towards the east wing, and into one of the training rooms.

The lights flash on as soon as Isaac steps in, illuminating the previously dark room in order to reveal a battle arena. At the opposite end, his thief and now opponent stands proudly: an Oranguru. Yes, a pokémon. One that holds the white and red spheres that had been so very easily taken from the grunt’s nightstand just moments ago.

”Merlo.” The voice comes from above: a man leaning against the railing of an observation deck. He takes a sip from a can of cold brew. ”You know how to battle, right?”

The Oranguru seems to almost smirk, repetitively tossing the pokéballs up in the air and catching them as it waits.

Isaac had been woken out of a sound sleep so that he could chase a monkey.[break][break]

A monkey that was apparently very, very ready for a Pokemon battle.[break][break]

It would be hard for Isaac to hide his incredulous shock at first. Hell, he was practically mouthing 'Oranguru' to himself, as if trying to process what exactly he was looking at here. Mars' words (when the hell did Mars get here???) only further confirmed what Isaac already knew; this monkey was here to battle. But how? And why?[break][break]

"With a monkey," Isaac said, voice deadpan. "You're asking me to take whatever Pokemon I've had left and battle against an Oranguru. Not to battle the Oranguru, but to battle with the Oranguru. This is what you're asking me to do here."[break][break]

Normally, this sounded like a recipe for insubordination ready to happen. Hell, from the tone of Isaac's voice, it sounded he was either going to treat this like a joke or waltz off in disbelief. However, after he got the initial confusion out of his system, the gears started turning in his head. If someone as high up on the pecking order as Mars was telling him to fight the monkey, it meant one thing; he needed to fight the fucking monkey. In addition, Mars wasn't one of Rocket's wildcards. Maybe someone more capricious would haze him by having him waste his time with this Duel, but Mars? No. This had a purpose behind it.[break][break]

Besides, if he got humiliated by taking a literal monkey lightly, he'd never forgive himself.[break][break]

His eyes sharpened. His focus tightened. With a single, determined nod, he looked towards Mars. "Alright. You're on," he said. "Can I see which of my Pokemon I've got left before we start? Or is part of the challenge here going in blind?"

There is no request in the grunt’s words, and such being the case, they’re met with no more than a raised eyebrow. Eyes as gold as the riches kept in the vaults of Mars’ bank stare down at Isaac Merlo, and in that stare there is no warmth at all. No fondness, no appreciation, and no joy.

Yes, he’ll have to battle against the Oranguru. No, there’s no room to question this.

”Do you not think yourself capable of winning against a pokémon?” The question is rhetorical, for the answer is not meant to be given to him verbally but through actions. Almost as if he’s saying ’Prove to me that you’re not completely incompetent’. Except, of course, for the fact that Mars usually cares little for such wording. There’s no point in being unnecessarily rude, after all.

”Sure, you can check if you want.” He says simply, and when he does as much, the Oranguru lets out a sound halfway between a bark and a mocking laugh. Is it making fun of Isaac? Yes, of course it is. In fact, it goes ahead and throws the pokéballs, ready to INSTRUCT Isaac’s own teammates to fight against him.

Mars does no more than watch, his expression unreadable.
