Adrial walked up the hill with his head down, trying his best not to be spotted by anyone who'd recognize him. The last thing he needed was news of his return getting back to his father. [break][break]

He sighed, nose scrunching at the salty wind blowing up from the ocean. Years in the mountains without the sea, he'd forgotten how much he missed the smell. He stopped near the top of the hill, steel-toed boots digging into the dirt as he stared up at the lighthouse. [break][break]

"Fuck, this is stupid." [break][break]

Meet a stranger at the top of a hill because someone he barely knew said they'd be able to help? Sounded like the start of a D-list horror movie if Adrial ever heard one. He spun on his heels, glancing down the hillside. [break][break]

Not too late to walk away, head back to Johto, and forget he ever ran into that Rocket grunt. [break][break]

At the top of the hill, in the shadow of the lighthouse, the cherry of Gavin's cigarette blooms. He pockets the lighter and takes a long pull, exhaling purple-black miasma in place of smoke. It's just dissipating when he spots his mark.

He lifts a pale, scarred hand to beckon the youth forward.

"I heard you're seeking a certain kind of assistance."

He offers the carton of cigarettes as the gap between them is closed.

"Hm?" Adrial turned to the stranger, ruby eyes lacquered with caution narrowing as they spoke. "And who told you that?" [break][break]

Despite his skepticism, Adrial stepped closer when beckoned, stopping a laundry baskets length away from the man. He glanced briefly to the carton, but didn't reach for it, hands remaining by his side.[break][break]

"A gossiping Zubat or a nosy Rattata?"

"That's rather stereotypical, don't you think?"

Of course, most stereotypes had some vague root in fact, however distant. Rocket had given him a Zubat to train in his days as a grunt; Rattata and Zubat were common as dirt, easily replaced if the grunts were too rough with them. He'd treated his own well enough to see it evolve into a Crobat, and the memory of her death still haunts.

Do I, or does Rocket?

Gavin supposes the distinction matters little and less, these days. He lived and breathed Rocket. Their will was more and more a reflection of his own, the higher he climbed and the deeper his roots spread.

"Change it, certainly," he agrees. "For better or for worse is all in where you're standing. So where do you stand?" Gavin's eyes narrow in challenge. "With the League's ideals, or against them?"
