Paxton barely slept. He struggled just a smidge with getting to be at a decent time and closing his eyes and just sleeping. Luckily when he was out he was out. This wasn't one of those time. Paxton had only recently fallen asleep, somewhere in those light REM cycles about to drop into that deep slumber when his doorbell goes wild. It's enough to make him fall out of bed scrambling to wake up and figure out what the hell was going on. [break][break]

Ollie is already on his way rushing out of the bedroom and scratching at the door. Paxton followed more slowly, trying his best to look decent. Bleary eyed and confused, he fumbled his way to the front door, shooing Ollie out of the way with his foot before cracking it open. "Wha-...?" he's too tired to even be mad at the ruckus she'd caused. "E-Eris??" he asked, squinting against the morning sun. "Wha- Why??? How'd you find my house?" he asked. Although, he still opened the door fully to allow both her and Reiner entry.

Even seeing Ollie is a breath of fresh air, her hands wrapping around the little feline as she draws him into a hug.

"Miss Luka lives next door!!" She smiles, letting Reiner grunt at the Meowth before slinking right in. Eris follows right after, carefully resting a hand against the closest wall and using it to guide her path. "And well, stuff hasn't been too good back home... So I just wanted to go exploring today!"

Ollie the kitten is ready to POUNCE on Reiner to assert dominance as the king cat in this household, but before he can Eris grabs him and...well he allowed it. The cottonball meowed excitedly, purring as the little girl held him. Paxton close the door behind, reaching out to give Reiner a small scratch down his spine as a greeting. "Yes...?? Oh- Yeah, ok." Perhaps luka chêne had mentioned she babysat, but he didn't quite remember a connection to Eris. [break][break]

Whatever the case, she's already here. He can't shoo her off and he had been a little worried he hadn't seen her. Along with holding onto her Christmas gift...this late into the year. He held back a sigh. boruta maher had mentioned better late than never but... He didn't even know if she'd like it. [break][break]

Well...anything better than home at the moment, right? He leads her into his small kitchen, pulling out a small tupper and taking the lid off. The faint smell of cinnamon rose up, pungent compared to the rest of his bland apartment. "Here, have you eaten?" he asked but didn't wait for an answer. "Let me uh- change and we can go explore the city then. S'not like I have any plans today." he said, nodding over at Ollie to keep track of Eris. He then grabbed a can opened and checked the fridge before pulling out two cans of wet food. "Reiner, you too. Ollie, share." he warned as he cracked open the little meals and set them on the floor before heading back into his room to change.

But without Reiner to guide her for that brief moment, she trips over a few pair of shoes left out in the corridors, hands gingerly outstretched as she tries to move over to the Luxray. He notices almost immediately, slinking back to her and shooing Ollie away with a growl.[break][break]

His question about whether she's eaten goes unanswered, only responded to with a quick diversion of her gaze. Reiner, on the other hand, squints at the canned food, barely moving to fight with Ollie over the strange mess.[break][break]

"Where are we going though?? Or did you just wanna stay home?? Cos you look like a zombie walking!!"

Ollie gives Reiner a pointed MROW, scurrying out of reach of the Luxray. He glared at Reiner, picking up his can of tuna and move a bit away from the bigger cat before proceeding to eat. "It's not exactly clean, so I don't want you or Reiner getting into stuff here." he explained from his bedroom, the door closed but walls thin enough for his voice to carry. Paxton was trying to speed run the skincare routine luka chêne had given him. [break][break]

He'd already dug through for a change of clean, comfortable clothes and his sneakers and shoe horn were out by the door itself. A comb is passed through his hair while his toothbrush hung in his mouth before finishing up. The faucet is turned on to rinse his mouth and he's quick to pull hair up and out of his face, most of it long enough for a ponytail. If it got any longer than this he might consider chopping some of it off again. [break][break]

When he finally stepped back, Ollie is done eating and curled up near Eris for the time being. "It's fine- I just needed to wash up." he said, waving off the child's concerns. He held a small striped, green and red paper bag. It's taped shut, and clearly from a holiday long past. "Here." he said, palming her the small gift before moving to pick up Ollie's empty can.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]Cleanliness doesn't really matter to her but she'll respect Paxton's boundaries as she flops over his couch. And Reiner having had enough of Ollie's antics, decides that it's time to schmove a little, slinking up to the couch and settling on the floor right beside Eris.[break][break]

What really is minutes just seems to spread into hours, her feet kicking against the pillows as she silently screams into the void. In the first few seconds, she rolls around. And in the next few, she's getting up and looking for anything interesting - Books, family pictures, perhaps even a diary?[break][break]

But she finds nothing and the boredom begins to set in once more, unbridled energy spilling from her as she fidgets. It's never a fun time to be left alone with her thoughts, to allow herself quiet to dive back into her memories. Her hands immediately go to pulling out a worn-out leather journal, fingers brushing over charred corners as she turns to the last page.[break][break]

And there sits her greatest treasure, discoloured with char, bloodstains and watermarks - The only family photo she has left. It stays there as Paxton enters the room again, her eyes drifting from the smiles on the page to the gift he places in her hands. And it sparks that little bit of nostalgia that mixes in with her words.[break][break]

"Thanks Concord..." She blinks, realising the way that Reiner rears his head up in surprise. "I mean uh, Paxton."

Ollie is quick to watch and wait. When Reiner moves away to sit by Eris, the kitten turns back to the second can of tuna to scarf it down and lick it clean. He soon joined his owner, climbing the back of the couch and perching on the top to look down at Eris and Paxton.

He's not sure what reaction he expected, but Eris is surprisingly mild mannered. Maybe she didn't like hairclips. Oh well. She liked food, and they were going out anyway. As he leaned over the top and listened he felt himself stiffen at the name, caught a bit off guard. Something itches in the back of his mind. Eris' voice- the voice of a child- it's almost too close for comfort. Uncomfortable. It shifts and tugs at memories in his brain he didn't want to think of when around Eris.

He swallowed, blinking quickly before gently ruffling the little girl's head. "Concor-das. Officer Concordas." he corrected with a tiny smile. "But Paxton is good too." he said, not dwelling too much on the mistake. He straightened up before nodding over at the door. "Ready to head out? You can pick what we do. My schedule is, thankfully, pretty clear this afternoon."

But she also finds her attention grabbed by the way Paxton seems to tense up at the name she uses, her head tilting as she peers at him with her one good eye.[break][break]

"Mmm, just remembered someone..." She murmurs, barely moving away as he ruffles her hair. On the other hand, Reiner seems to look at the two far more intensely than usual, his nostrils flaring as he sniffs the air.[break][break]

At Paxton's invitation, she holds a hand up to him. "Wait I wanna see what you got me first!" Then, she shifts her open journal off her lap, giving the familiar cursive writings one last touch before placing it on the couch beside her. "Awh! They're cute! Where'd you get these?"

Paxton smiles with ease, nodding quietly. "My bad." he said before the girl perked up out of whatever thoughts she'd been in. His eyes naturally are attracted to movement and they go to the journal. There's curiosity there.

As Eris tore through the present, revealing cat like hair clips, Paxton's eyes simply read over what he can see and fall on the photo. It's...it seemed worn down, charred maybe? The edges brittle and the photo colors faded by the edges. But he can see smiles, maybe a little cat. He sees bright eyes, hopeful eyes. Eyes kinda like his and not.

He stopped breathing, expression unreadable. His brain goes blank. He stares at a family that didn't exist- couldn't exist. He's staring at-

Something is short circuiting and before Paxton can spiral into the static that threatened to overtake everyone of his senses, Eris snaps him out of it. "Uhhh-.....Claire's?" he said blinking in confusion as he squinted at the memory. "Or- I think I found a little popup at the department store." he leaned over towards her tapping one of the clips. "I saw the Shinx, made me think of Reiner." he said looking over the cat and suppressing the urge to hurl.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]She's drawn to the clips for a moment, her smile reflecting their own as she shows them off to Reiner. But that isn't enough to stop her from noticing Paxton's reaction. And when she follows his gaze, she finds it stuck on the picture too.[break][break]

"That's me, momma, pa and my big brother. And that Shinx is Reiner, yeah!" Her smile begins to fade, pain leaking in as she sucks a deep breath. "This was before everything went wrong... everything..."[break][break]

She shouldn't bring this up, this isn't a good topic to bring up. Thoughts are swirling through her brain and churning in her stomach. In her brewing misery, Reiner reaches over to nuzzle her with a soft growl.[break][break]

"It was scary in Kanto..." Tears begin to well up in her eyes, her sleeves getting drenched as she tries to rub them away. "I miss momma and pa... I don't know where Concord went... I wanna go home."

There's no taunt or quip towards the Luxray, probably the first sign something's not right. Eris quickly looks back at the journal- the photo. A photo she shouldn't- nobody should have. He's all too alert, something griping at his heart as she tries to choke back emotion. "Burned down." he finished, less a question and more of tense attempt at leading the little girl into finishing her story. A story she shouldn't know. [break][break]

She continued, and every word felt like a knife, plunging further and further into his back. Guilt swells, and he has flashes of his own hell in Kanto. The misery, and the pain. The desperate fight for survival. The overwhelming odds. She shoves the last knife into his heart, repeating a name he had abandoned years ago. [break][break]

"I haven't heard that in a while." He lets out a wheeze, griping the sofa couch with white knuckles. "It's ok to cry." he said after a long, loooong silence and placing a hand on her head to comfort her. "And to miss them." he added. "I-...I miss my family too." [break][break]

He felt like he was about to snap, putting so much pressure on a kid that may as well have just been a doppelganger. Like they're just two different people with lost families, and bad memories. His throat hurts as she whispered. He'd struck a chord. He'd been right. [break][break]

He'd been so stupid. Stubborn? Maybe hopeless is the best way to describe it. "Shit-" The crack in his façade isn't explosive. He doesn't burst at the seams, or make some grand gesture. It's starts wit ha couple of tears that leaks out, unable to be kept at bay. He blinked, but the room is growing blurry and he raised a hand to cover his eyes. [break][break]

"I'm sorry-" he breathed. He didn't want her to see him like this. "I- I just didn't think-" he cut himself off. The few words that escaped him cracking with everything from grief to joy to relief. It's an overwhelming wave as it hits him how long it's been since he's seen her. How he'd lost her. Everything had happened so fast.
