the minor league gym circuit was an interesting concept, one that had fallen onto jayden's purview without incident. it was a league initiative, one that he had known about for quite some time but one that he had been unable to look into until now. sure, he had met CIAN MAHER for his badge, but that had been a surprise and unplanned. this was different.

[break][break] the more he explored, the more curious it was. if the league had a way to keep an eye on powerful trainers within their midst, did that mean that rocket should as well? sure, there was MAGMA and SPECTRA — both programs that, at it's forefront, were meant to draw in powerful members of rocket. but an official gym circuit? an interesting thought, especially after his conversation with Isaac Merlo a few days ago.

[break][break] he enters the doors of the facility with his shiny umbreon in tow; lada looks up at the lofty tree-tops with a curious gaze, one ear tilted to the side. "hello? i'm here for my challenge."

The arrival of a bigshot in the region warrants a little decoration - Fairy lights hang on the branches of the sprawling trees, gentle and welcoming with their dim glow. When Jayden attempts to find a building, all he finds is a small wooden cabin to step into. And in that small cabin, a small gym leader busies herself with decorations, precariously balanced on a chair as she tapes the end of a fairy light to the wall. Looking around, many other pokemon seem to be busying themselves with little things: making smores, placing little streamers, drawing on the walls with crayons.[break][break]

Jayden's sudden entrance causes the one with crayons to stop, turn to look at him and promptly drop the crayons with a guilty look.[break][break]

"Oh, we weren't expecting you so soon..." Rosmontis turns at the clatter, staring at the graffiti on her walls before turning her attention to the man. "The woods are a little more rowdy than usual, but that's because they were all excited to impress you."[break][break]

A Scorbunny hops up to the man, holding out a freshly toasted smore with trembling hands.[break][break]

"You may want a guide for your journey ahead, I trust that all of them wish to lend their aid in their own ways."

[attr="class","inner"] crayon-colored art and dangling fairy lights. it's a mythical sight. wonderful in some ways and surreal in others.

[break][break] 'she's young.' though he had done his research, the one thing he clearly skipped over was her age. not that he was particularly surprised. even when it came to the traditional circuit, John Sullivan was younger than most of his age. even Stormy Silph had reached elite status ranking by the time she had turned twenty-one. clearly, pokemon training was not limited by age.

[break][break] "i'm looking forward to it," he says, looking down at the scorbunny who hops towards him. he shakes his head at the small pokemon, declining him. perhaps later would be the time for treats. "he will do fine," he comments, gesturing towards the fire-type. while not his ideal of options, jayden found him at least suitable.

The rejection comes hard, the smore quietly lowered as the Scorbunny looks to the ground. For a moment, Rosmontis puts down her hand full of decorations, carefully climbing off the chair and sweeping the bunny into a hug as she takes the treat.[break][break]

"I'm sure both of you will do well." She hums, chewing the smore and finishing it within a bite. "Perfectly roasted like always!"[break][break]

The Scorbunny sniffles, then nods and hops back to the ground, waddling over to Jayden with a small frown. Then he waddles over to the door, scrabbling and leaving through the little flap.[break][break]

"Feel free to follow him. He'll show you the way into the woods. But from then on, you two must work together to find the heart of the forest." There's a small apologetic smile on her face, her fingers pressed together as she gestures to the exit. Good luck ahead, dear traveller."[break][break]

When Jayden leaves to follow the Scorbunny, he'll find himself being led down a dirt path, rocky and decorated by fallen leaves and scattered twigs. It's quiet, not even a single bird or critter chatters in these parts. The only thing that breaks through the silence is the quiet squishing and squelching of the earth beneath their feet, the dirt perhaps soggy from yesterday's passing rain shower.[break][break]

Up ahead, the path splits into two: The left path carries a faint sweet smell and the right harbours a quiet gurgling.

[break][break] his words, as well as his offered hand, was left as the scorbunny turns it's back on him and scuttles towards the exit. 'was it something i said?'

[break][break] befuddled, he turns back to Eris Halla as she explains the rest of the task. very well. "understood. thank you," he says with a polite dip of the head before following the rabbit out of the cabin.

[break][break] the silence that greets them in the woods is eery but not at all unwelcome. at least, not on jayden's part. his feet are light against the forest floor — he is, after all, trained for this. the same could not be said for the scorbunny who squelches - perhaps intentionally loudly - ahead of him.

[break][break] he is angry.

[break][break] "er."

[break][break] well, he would be no use. jayden reaches into his pocket, releasing his dragapult into the sky to investigate the paths ahead. the pokemon's eyes gleam red with the power of LOCK-ON before flying off.

The Scorbunny watches as the Dragapult takes flight, his ears twitching for a moment before he stops to look back at jayden cross.[break][break]

On the other hand, the Dragapult would be able to rise a little above the tree canopy, guided by a strange breeze that seems to push it off-course and a voice that gently warbles. As it attempts to look at the paths from its little perch in the sky, it will find its sights obscured by a pink haze floating through the tree lines. Diving down to take a closer look only reveals more pink smog, one that slowly encroaches on the forest path and soon envelopes the dragon.[break][break]

Through the mist, laughter and merry music echo from every corner, unfamiliar voices not quite forming real words and blathering on aimlessly. There's nothing to be seen in these parts but with the aid of a focused gaze, the Dragapult manages to lock onto a silhouette flowing through the space. Whether it chooses to dash towards it, attack it or simply watch for more clues, the mist eventually dissipates and reveals the dragon's location.[break][break]

Right behind Jayden as the man has his gaze still turned towards the direction the Dragapult had originally headed. It's here that the Scorbunny perks up, waving to the ghostly pokemon.[break][break]

[attr="class","inner"] wind curving out behind him, the dragapult continues on his ascent to the top of the forest. sure enough, there is little to be seen among the trees with the exception of a pink mist that seems to surround the area. as he dips down closer to get a better look, vagahn lets out a sound of surprise as the cherry-blossom hue surrounds him.

[break][break] merry laughter and song fill the air, aiming to distract him, but it's only through the power of his lock-on that he's able to secure the sight of something floating through space.

[break][break] jayden and the scorbunny are able to catch up in a few moments, but by the time the rocket admin finds his dragapult again, it seems that the pokemon is as bewildered as him, unsure as to what transpired.

[break][break] the dragon pokemon does two single loops in the air, wordlessly explaining the situation to both jayden and the fire-type. the rocket tilts his head to the side in interest before making a decision towards the sweet-smelling path. he releases his noibat, who immediately releases a HURRICANE towards the path.

[break][break] cautious and careful, he glances briefly at the scorbunny to make sure the pokemon is following.

The Hurricane seems to pick up in speed, rustling low-hanging branches and tugging at flowering blooms as it spirals down the leftwards path. And yet, instead of sweeping away the mist in giant blows, the pink amalgamation seems to welcome the breezy flow, using its momentum to spiral outwards and rush towards Jayden and gang.[break][break]

It doesn't take long before they're all consumed by the cherry haze, childish laughter ringing in their ears as their vision is obscured. No matter how they attempt to escape or run, they're only met by pink in every direction, music warbling as a sweet scent waltzes through the air.[break][break]

Then come strange wisps, colourful little flames that flicker and burn before their very eyes. Scorbunny reaches out for one that appears before his very eyes but fails to catch it and it soon appears elsewhere, as if leading a trail towards somewhere. Meanwhile, a purple flame dances right before Jayden's eyes, gently circling around him without rest.[break][break]

Having been in this mist once before, the Dragapult is quick to notice the shadowy figure once more, leading away from the trail of wisps.[break][break]

[attr="class","inner"] swirls of sakura pink take to the air, and jayden's gaze can't help but be drawn to it. blush-colored rose mingling with rouge and bubblegum pink, the sight is certainly one that ressurrects the image of something candyland sweets. it's a thought after that the sight is not just sweet, there is a scent to the air as well that is unmistakable, and it is only seconds later that jayden realizes the trap that they have already been caught in.

[break][break] clever.

[break][break] this supernatural forest is almost as thrilling as the tangled that he holds so dear.

[break][break] childish laughter cackles in the distance, beckoning them forth through the deep mist, but jayden does not move yet. he lingers, only until he can be sure that the SCORBUNNY is by his side.

[break][break] "stay close," he says and elicits a sharp whistle. his DRAGAPULT is called back to his side, and jayden glances between the wisps that tempt them away, and the shadow that hovers in the distance. two paths - and perhaps a secret third.

[break][break] "lock-on and then infestation," he orders.

[break][break] the second path then.

[break][break] the dragapult's gaze glows with the power of LOCK-ON towards the shadow, as tiny little dreepy sink to the floor in the form of an INFESTATION on the ground. the earth shivers to make place for the thousands of shadowy worms that slink down the path, and it provides a back-up in case the scorbunny or jayden are to stray from the path while his dragapult zooms forward once again with surprising speed.

[break][break] jayden glances towards the scorbunny. "can you run?"

[break][break] and with that, he breaks into a sprint, following his pokemon towards their goal.

Oh, how the laughter grows upon realisation that the trapped mice are willing to play its game. The mists swirl much more rapidly, curling and condensing to further obscure the shadow within it. But a well-timed Lock-On allows the Dragapult to catch traces of it regardless, just about enough to follow its trail.[break][break]

The Scorbunny is most certainly no stranger to running, easily keeping pace with Jayden when he's told to. Add on the precaution that Jayden takes to ensure that they stay on route and the way that the mist attempts to obscure his vision becomes nothing but a mere hassle. And yet, fate always seems to find a way to foil the greatest of solutions.[break][break]

Spirits need not walk on solid ground whereas humans do. Before the smaller Dreepies are able to warn them of possible dangers ahead, the ground opens up and swallows them whole. Pink is quick to bleed into never-ending darkness, air whistling and rushing past Jayden and the Scorbunny as they drop into the unknown. Laughter echoes through the seemingly bottomless pit, this time accompanied by gleeful clapping.[break][break]

[attr="class","inner"] even as the environment is swirled up in a sickly sweet mist, surrounding the area in pink and coral rose, jayden can still feel the grass crunch beneath his feet as he runs. there is a mixture of soil and dirt whenever his feet skids against a stray pebble, speaking of the path that they run on, but jayden is careful to remember exactly what they are and where they are.

[break][break] the forest could change, but in the end, it was still a forest.

[break][break] or not.

[break][break] suddenly, the ground falls beneath them just as the dreepies are swallowed up in the sudden drop. jayden's heart gives a sudden, terrifying lurch and it's only instinct that makes him grab around in the dark for the scorbunny — saving it before he can save himself, pulling the pokemon close to his chest.

[break][break] "vaghagn!"

[break][break] his command rings out sharp, just as the dragapult comes zooming back towards his trainer. an agility is attempted to get their faster — but there's no telling if it'll be too late.

It isn't often that the world simply vanishes under your feet and when it does, it certainly becomes a sink or swim situation but in a more aerial sense.[break][break]

Jayden's cries do not go unnoticed, the Dragapult able to dive swiftly for his trainer and reach him just in time. Just as gnarly claws clasp onto his body, time seems to stop, the raised hairs that once fluttered in the wind now falling gently back into a rather frazzled position.[break][break]

A giggle rings through the darkness, a pair of bright purple orbs fluttering around him but remaining just out of reach. The wind shifts unnaturally around his body, as if something seems to be circling him. It's quiet for a few moments, before a childish humming begins to echo once more.[break][break]

And before Jayden, the Scorbunny or his Dragapult even notice, a bright light shines from underneath them, rushing towards them rapidly and swallowing them whole.[break][break]

Strange wisps curl around them, blurring their vision as they continue to plummet towards an unknown bottom. Looking up to the sky shows nothing but a vast blue expanse, dotted by the presence of birds flying high and dragons sweeping through puffy white clouds. Looking down reveals something rather peculiar - An endless field of green tree canopies, decorated with the occasional open patches of kaleidoscopic blossoms or shimmering lakes. Somewhere in the midst of this scenery, a strange pink dome swirls at the entrance of the forest.[break][break]

Even with the Scorbunny's shrill squeaks disrupting lines of thoughts, a quick moment taken to process the situation will reveal this much: An accelerated fall towards the ground from this height will not result in anything good.[break][break]

[attr="class","inner"] his stomach gives a dedicated lurch even as vaughn's claws sink into the fabric of his clothes, his heart swooping as shimmering violet orbs echo in the distance before him, just out of reach. the childish hum is taunting as it sings through the emptied space and the bright light swallows them all whole.

[break][break] jayden twists his body in the air, pulling the scorbunny close to his chest. even as they plummet towards the unknown bottom, there is one thing that rings through him as sure and dedicated as anything else.

[break][break] jayden did not intend to die today.

[break][break] vauhagn beats his wings soundlessly, and it's then that jayden spots the sight of something pink and shimmering beneath that endless expanse of canopies. "there!" jayden orders, just as the power of PHANTOM FORCE swells around them. perhaps, it might not do anything, since the power of the forest is stranger than anything and perhaps more powerful than mere moves would allow.

The ability to control one's emotions and come up with strategies to overcome the sudden threats thrown his way allows the pokemon to respond in kind - Vauhagn's Phantom Force is activated within seconds, a dull ache hooking the deepest parts of jayden cross's stomach and abruptly displacing him. The howling and whipping of fierce winds is replaced by a warm burst of air behind his ear, a small raspberry rattling around his brain as gravity seeks for any momentary lapses in his balance.[break][break]

Whether he finds himself stumbling to regain his footing after the rough warping, or simply ends up falling right onto his rear end, Jayden will most certainly notice the wisps of pink smoke that curl and rub at his ankles. There is no forest. Or rather, there is no forest to be seen in the midst of the thick cherry mist. It seems that after all that's happened, he's back to where he started...[break][break]

But this time, the Scorbunny that he carries cries out, letting go of Jayden's clothes with shaky hands as he begins to squeak at Vauhagn. Will-o-wisps dance around the ghostly dragon in aimless circles, spinning... spinning... until one finally breaks formation and slips right into the Dragapult's body. And then comes another, a strange orange orb hurtling out of the woods and phasing right through Jayden's ankles.[break][break]

For a brief moment, both parties see a rather strange sight - A man and a Dragapult that look exactly like them, standing right before their very eyes. It's as if they stare into a mirror but with some odd differences. Every bit of movement that Jayden makes is copied: When he moves his right foot, the look-alike also moves the foot on their right. They share every little bit of expression and share the same gaze, reflecting the way he's slicked his hair to the creases in his shirt at this very moment. However, whilst Jayden might carry a frazzled Scorbunny in his arms, the Scorbunny in his reflection seems to be punching 'his' ankles.[break][break]

The little one that Jayden squeaks louder, holding onto his shirt once more whereas the mirrored Scorbunny seems oblivious to their presence, continuing to whale on 'Jayden's' ankle with weak slaps. Every now and then, Mirror!Scorbunny looks up to Mirror!Jayden's shoulders, shaking a fist at a shadowy figure and stomping his feet. And perhaps as he watches this happen, Jayden might just feel a weight resting upon his shoulders...
