Call him morbid, but—

This was the very first time he was going to set foot into this region’s Safari Zone. Like, ever.

How different was it from Kanto’s anyway? He knew the entire layout of Kanto’s Safari Zone like the back of his hand, so this was going to be completely unexplored territory for him.

Well, then.

Rumor had it there was… the ‘most useless fish alive’ currently overpopulating these parts, so ~~it was time to make some Magikarp sashimi~~ he wanted to get one for himself—not because of the ‘most useless fish alive’ thing, but because of its evolution.

And man, THEO BECKETT would kill him if he said the words ‘the most useless fish alive’ to his boss’s face.

The first thing he encountered—

Huh, strange-looking little…thing. Waddled around on stubby little feet.

He would’ve wanted to catch it and add it to his growing army, but—his Meganium was a nasty little drama queen who didn’t like anything else that shared her typing running around…

Oops.

“Why did I have to be stuck with a drama queen…” he grumbled with a sigh, palm meeting face as he (regretfully) left the Fomantis behind. For now.

Maybe next time.

The next thing that he would come across—while not the thing he was looking for, well, he knew how useful Ghost-types were (having one himself, albeit in the form of a pair of possessed swords) when it came to espionage in particular.

It didn’t take him too long to whistle quietly, just once—and from what appeared to be his shadow, a sudden burst of Hydro Pump came hurtling out of its depths.

Blinking in surprise, the Duskull waved its stubby arms around, Disabling the attack that had drenched it in the process—before the Frogadier, lurking in Kenjiro’s shadow suddenly went in for the Bounce attack.

The Ghost-type never knew what hit it as the blur came down so fast, striking it hard—and causing it to smack into a nearby tree.

Before it could blink, a Safari Ball was thrown.

Ah, and there it was.

His #1 target of the entire day.

Despite one of the events down at Slateport Beach running a simple fishing event, but—

There was something different about this one, and before his Frogadier could snipe it out of the puddle it was in—the Magikarp had decided to get the advantage and used Bounce before the Water-type could.

“Interesting,” was all he said, before the blur came out of his shadows once more and chucked a rock at the incoming blur crashing down fast—

Attempting to Smack it Down out of the air.

A few seconds later, a loud thudding noise caused a new crater close to where he stood.

“Feisty.”

Another Safari Ball was thrown.

He knew that his Meganium was going throw a hissy fit if he showed up with another Grass-type…

Who knew that their species were fucking territorial? Not to mention, extremely jealous?

The little… simian (not that he knew that it was a Grookey; anything past the upper five hundred of the Pokédex was a mystery to him) continued to wave its branch around at something.

If he cared a little more about the world around him, and had some more of his almost-extinguished emotional capacity, he’d be thinking about how the little monkey looked like a clumsy little wizard (or witch, he didn’t know the gender) trying to practice some magic using the tiny little branch it held.

On to the next one, it seemed.

The next thing he saw was…

Oh, another Remoraid.

It reminded him of the one he’d fished up at the docks, but this one was… nowhere near as impressive as the other one that he’d landed (and thrown back into the water).

He had no idea why, but there was something—strange about whatever else was waiting in the Safari Zone. Like there were multiple sets of eyes watching his every single danged-ass fucking move.

Were there Zubat around these parts? His brows furrowed, but that couldn’t be—there were no Zubat on the notice board of whatever was roaming around the Safari Zone grounds at this time.

Maybe in a few months…

Either way, he left the dangerous fish behind—much as he wanted to get it as a gift for his boss, well… he was pretty sure the other already had this one too.

Finally, a worthy opponent!

The moment the Salandit spotted him, it hissed at him—however before he could even react, a powerful blast of Hydro Pump from somewhere caught it mid-hiss, and the hiss became a shriek of terror.

He could only smirk as the salamander then changed course, releasing a blast of Dragon Pulse from its maw—sweeping it around which forced him to dive off to one side.

“Sassy,” was all he would say, before the Frogadier that was hiding in his shadows emerged, in a Bounce attack that had the amphibian soar up into the sky.

The Salandit followed course, trying to snipe it from the skies with an Incinerating burst of flames, however just before the Frogadier landed, another Hydro Pump caught the salamander in mid-shriek, extinguishing the flames and forcing it to choke on the water.

Before it could drown and die on dry land, he threw the last Safari Ball at the hissing, angry, spitting lizard.
