once she could hear him in the water behind her, she turned, still smiling.

nina had done things that might’ve contributed to such a brazenness—but it wasn’t something she put together. she just knew she wasn’t shy.

”what do you mean? it’s easy.”

she drifted, arms floating up near the surface to idly push herself backwards over a gentle wave.

”why does it make you nervous?”

she smiled back. really pretty, huh? she hadn’t expected that from her good friend danny. the next day, she’d likely just chalk it up to the effects of the alcohol—but for now, it drove her curiosity.

”oh.”

just for fun, she bobbed a tiny bit higher out of the water as she drifted over the next wave.

having left a life of fake intimacy, nina had found herself feeling surprisingly lonely. it had been easier to just sleep in a cold bed than to tackle the daunting task of finding something real.

danny was just her friend, though, so flirting with him wasn't scary. in fact, maybe this was the perfect opportunity to try and indulge in something harmless and fun for the first time in a while.

as he drifted closer, she was careful not to drift away an inch.

”i can still show you more, if you want.”

perhaps too quick to respond and too slow to stop himself, danny is left having to deal with the silence that follows when he cuts himself off.[break][break]

it's harmless, he tells himself. they're just friends and they should be allowed to just have a bit of fun. but considering his history, it should come as no surprise that danny does not handle casual very well.[break][break]

never too late to start trying, though. even if there's a chance he'd fail and fall later on. he's too tipsy to think about that now, anyways.[break][break]

nina grinned. his excitement was endearing, and even a little funny—but she was careful not to laugh much. just a small chuckle.

through her amusement, curiosity persisted, and so did awakening desire.

instead of drifting closer, she disappeared beneath the surface. a few moments later, she was popping up a bit closer to shore. still watching him, she stood up so the water lapped along the scars around her thighs.

her fingertips ran through the next gentle wave as she called out to him, ”come over here.”

for half a second, danny expected her to surface closer to him, perhaps even in front of him. but she surfaces a distance away, closer to shore, and danny can't help but chuckle.[break][break]

his smile only grows wider at the sight of her. and like the good boy he is, he obliges.[break][break]

he makes his way towards her, swimming initially before standing and walking once in shallower waters. this time, for whatever reason, he carries himself with confidence.[break][break]

the pink on his cheeks still remains, however.[break][break]

he resurfaced closer, but still, she couldn’t see the blush on his face, only the different air about him. it reminded her more of the danny she’d seen on their last mission.

”hi.”

she wasn’t shy with her eyes. with a bright grin, her gaze returned to look for his, and she then spun in a circle to show him all the angles. water splashed against scarred skin as she turned against it.

”what do you think?”

another step, and danny’s hands were nearly on her skin for the first time. the only time, maybe? the future would tell.

”mhm,” she nodded, her smile partly lost to something primal as she reached out to gently guide him against her sides, where he’d reached for the curves beneath her ribs. she gradually dragged his touch to explore.

meanwhile, the beach was still empty. it was dark enough, that they’d spot anyone under the distant street lights long before being discovered. she didn’t care, though. maybe it was the alcohol, or maybe it was just him. she inched closer still.

he didn’t seem repulsed by the gnarled texture that ran in lines all around her—but she wouldn’t think about that until later. not until she realized, waking up sober, that he’d been holding the face onyx had informed her only a mother could love these days. she was pretty, but it had only taken these few cruel words from her attacker to make her feel unworthy.

for tonight, she was back to her old self. perfectly intact and carefree. she smiled in his hands and nodded silently, before taking the last small step and kissing him first.
