the sea! it's the sea!!

a pink-haired woman in police slacks stands on the edges of a dock. a florges adorned in regal purple flowers is with her, wholly unimpressed as the officer, who should be stern and morose, is instead leaning down on her hands and knees to dip her palm into the sea and watch as the water curls around her fingertips. the people around her are looking and wondering if this is really the officer sent to protect the shipment coming into sootopolis from overseas. unfortunately, the shiny new badge attached to her coat lapel seems to say 'yes. yes she is.'

she was landlocked her entire life. oldale offered little in terms of aquan delights, so she distracted herself with the greenhouses, the flowers, the plants. it's only today that she finally sees the sea, that she finally watches how the sun scintillates and glints off the choppy ocean waves as they lap against the ship she's really supposed to be watching right now. as soon as she heard about this assignment back at the precinct, she literally jumped at the chance to get assigned to it, trampling nearly three other coworkers in the process. she doesn't know how to swim, never even touched a pool before, but there's no real way to convince a woman who believes she can do anything if she tries otherwise. so she's here to protect the shipment!

and god, is she distracted. it's a little sad how eager she is.

[attr="class","skullbody"]What did you do when your enemy was in need?[break][break]

The situation around Sootopolis as of late was . . . Complicated, to say the least. The city may have been under Rocket control, but there were plenty of good citizens of Hoenn still living there. Was it fair to abandon them and make their suffering worse, just to put the squeeze on the League's greatest rival? Some argued putting an end to this occupation would justify the means. Others argued nobody deserved to starve. A few figured it was an question of political savvy, believing that if the League abandoned its people, Rocket would fill the void.[break][break]

And that was before getting into the horrors of the Dawn of the Darkest Day.[break][break]

In a way, Blythe may have been the best pick for this job. In a world of red tape, under the table trade deals, smuggling routes, protests in both directions, literal alien invasions, and oh so much political discourse, it was so easy for most officers to take a side. Yet all Blythe wanted was to help a people who were suffering. It was a noble goal.[break][break]

She wasn't alone. Beneath the waves, and across faction lines, lied one who would agree with her. What he lacked in idealism, he made up for in principles that he refused to let die. What he lacked in innocence, he made up for in stubbornness. What he lacked in a willingness to let others in, he made up for in a reluctance to let him go. They were two sides of the same coin, one a public presence in uniform, the other a masked figure beneath the waves.[break][break]

They were also, per their respective sides, natural enemies.[break][break]

Yet, would they be as such today? Where some saw unrest, others saw opportunity. As the ship drew closer to Route 126's dock, perhaps Blythe would notice what appeared to be a figure climbing up the side of the boat. Clad in all white, they blended in with the surface of the hull, making it very difficult to spot at first. However, it was apparent that something here wasn't quite right.

faction lines are nothing in the face of great need. it's a sentiment blythe has always held—when blood is spilled and weapons have been drawn, her only allegiance is to humanity, to ensuring everyone has food and water and shelter, that nobody goes left behind or forgotten. she doesn't know where she learned this. perhaps, just like she did so many years ago, it came across on early spring breezes, transported from far away, and planted in her mind to flower under duress. the idea has matured by now, but it still retains the naivety of her youth, tempered from her time in the academy.

and that naivety may be the death of her.

someone is climbing up the side of the shipment boat. she doesn't even recognize it, too distracted by the cold, cool waves that lap so kindly against her fingertips, but donmai does. her eyes lift up and towards the ship, and she immediately picks out the shadow of a white-cloaked ruffian scaling the side of the boat. donmai, alarmed yet keeping her head high, slowly unfurls a vine from the pillow of flowers her head rests within. the vine shifts towards blythe's shoulder, then gently taps down upon it.

blythe only briefly glances up from the crystalline waters. "are you seeing this, donmai?" she enthuses, blue eyes glittering just like the sea does, reflected back on her irises. "i've never been this close before!"

donmai taps again, this time with far more urgency. blythe furrows her brows, then glances back to where the florges is indicating to.

it's with a start that blythe suddenly recognizes the person climbing the side of the boat. alarmed, she calls out to the person with a frown. "hello, sir or ma'am or..." she pauses, purses her lips, then continues, unperturbed. "you can't be up there! this is a secured area!"

[attr="class","skullbody"]You can't be up there! That's a secure area![break][break]

A Wishiwashi at the surface of the water, upon hearing the policewoman's words, splashed back into the depths. She dove down to meet the rest of her school, who were currently surrounding Isaac like a makeshift diving bell. As she poked her head through, a smile spread across Isaac's face. "Found stuff?" he asked, keeping his words quiet and brief. There was only a limited supply of air in the Wishiwashi sphere, and it all kinda smelled like fish. The less of it Isaac needed to inhale, the better.[break][break]

At her nod, a small smile spread across Isaac's face. "Good. Up," he said, taking a deep breath as the Wishiwashi broke back into their fish form. Soon, Isaac was riding atop the massive school of fish, keeping a low profile as he made his way back to the surface of the water. The far side of the boat would be his destination; there were far too many prying eyes at the docks.[break][break]

Once he emerged, he was quick to release another Pokemon. His ever-trusty Dhelmise, Sanford, slid onto his arm. With a little swing for momentum, he sent the Dhelmise shooting up to the railing of the ship. Its Anchor Shot stuck on like a grappling hook, allowing Isaac to start his own ascent towards the top of the ship. Maybe there, he'd be able to better investigate whatever trouble Gawr had overheard.[break][break]

While this played out in the shadows, the white-clad figure froze up. Damnit! They were spotted! People on the dock were starting to murmur among themselves, peering at the ship and trying to see for themselves. Nope. Nope, nope, nope, this was not good. But at least he had his ace in the hole. He cracked a Pokeball against the side of the ship, a Volbeat emerging rear-first. Its tail flickered a few times, then erupted into a blinding flash of light. Even those on the docks would need to avert their eyes, lest they end up hurt.[break][break]

When the pulse faded, the figure and his Volbeat were both long gone. Perhaps he had clambered onto the deck of the ship, or maybe he dove into a nearby window. With his disorientation techniques at play, it was going to be hard to tell. This called for a proper investigation!

today is the first time blythe has ever had to speak with such authority!

alas, it seems even her best efforts at intimidating the white-clad figure into jumping away from the ship are useless at best. her high hopes, as they astronomically soar, are immediately grounded in a blinding flash of light as a volbeat apparates from the stranger's newly-wielded pokeball. blythe barely gets time to shield her eyes before the firefly pokemon's tail flashes into incandescence, spreading light in every direction and stunning every civilian without the wherewithal and swift reflexes to throw their arms over their faces.

a few moments pass as blythe recovers, stumbling on the dock in a dizzy haze. donmai steadies her with a single, reaching vine, but that's all she can offer, blinded herself. all around her, innocent dockers also rub at their faces and eyes and cry out in confusion and concern, but their spurious sounds only give cause and reason for blythe to pick up the pace in her own recovery. the culprit could be getting away as she stands there like an idiot, goddamnit! it's with a grit of her teeth that blythe blinks rapidly before finally forcing her eyes open, only to discover that the white-robed stranger is completely gone, now entirely absent from the ship's white hull. she frowns and scowls in response, a twisted expression twinkling deep in her ocean blue eyes. this can't go unpunished!

with rapid economy, blythe rushes away from her spot on the docks with only a hand motion to signify that donmai should be following. from there, she surges towards the docked ship and, with a few mumbled apologies, boards the ship past stumbling sailors and young men and women carrying heavy wooden boxes. before long, she's on the ship, and her eyes are rapidly scanning her immediate surroundings.

luckily for Isaac, she manages to overlook the makeshift dhelmise grappling hook linked across the side of the ship. instead, she seeks information in the sailors themselves. with a look of utmost sincerity, she rushes towards the nearest sailor, and with a great sense of frenzied energy, she immediately begins her interrogation!

"you! have you seen a man in white clothing around her that you don't recognize?" she queries with wide eyes. before long, she digs her police badge off her lapel to present it to the sailor. "i have reason to believe they pose a danger to this ship!"

[attr="class","skullbody"]The combination of earnestness and energy was like a tidal wave smashing this poor sailor in the face. Still staggering under the weight of the cargo he was carrying, he turned to Blythe, a quizzical look on his face. "White? Sorry, lady, didn't see anyone in white running around here," he said. He turned a little further over his shoulder, looking to some of the sailors further back in the ship. "Ey! Scotty! You see anyone in white running around here?"[break][break]

"Huh? Heck'd there be some guy in white running around here?" he asked, only for his nose to wrinkle in surprise. "Waitaminute. The heck's this?" he asked, stooping down and picking up what appeared to be a white jacket. Normally, a jacket like this would have at least some sort of logo, ornamentation, or even trim on it, but this one was just pure white. This had to be the man's jacket! Had he abandoned it? And if so, could it be used to track him down?[break][break]

"Yeah, Scotty and I ain't seen nothin'. But, hey. We'll tell the rest of the boys to keep an eye out for ya, eh?" the man not named Scotty said. "If any of us see some weird shit around here, we'll keep ya in the loop. That is, if we don't take care of it ourselves!" The sailors laughed boisterously, then got back to their daily routine.[break][break]

"Look, Hank, buddy. The strong, silent type shtick's great and all . . . but are you really gonna pull that crap when we're trying to hold an investigation?"[break][break]

Back on the other side of the ship, Isaac's investigation was going about as fruitfully as Blythe's was. He was currently hidden in the cargo hold, speaking with his on-again, off-again associate, Hank Winters. In response to Isaac's inquiry, Hank simply blinked a few times. "Of course. Why am I even surprised?" Isaac asked, facepalming.[break][break]

"Alright. So if you're not up for talk, let's have some action. You go left, I go right, whoever bags the guy first is owed a hot dog. Deal?" Isaac asked. That seemed good enough for Hank. He tossed two Pokeballs onto the ground, flipping the Remoraids that came out into his hands like a pair of twin pistols. He then flashed Isaac a quick salute, charging out from the cargo hold.[break][break]

Ugh. Typical Hank. Not wanting to be outdone, Isaac made his way down the other hall. Surely between the two of them, they'd be able to scout this perimeter, right?

the sailors, though friendly, provide little to no help in regards to blythe's investigation. though she maintains a polite smile as they speak to her and each other, occasionally calling over their shoulders or mustering a grunt beneath their supply loads, she can't help but grind her teeth. the culprit is still out there, perhaps lurking within the very ship that they all stand upon, and she's just wasted precious few moments getting information that may end up leading nowhere!

until the winds change, bringing better fortune with it. a white jacket turns up on the deck, and quickly comes into blythe's custody at the behest of the sailors. finally, something she can make use of! with the appearance of this single piece of evidence, blythe summarily reasons that she need not harry the sailors any further. they have work to do, and so does she.

"thank you, both of you!" she affirms with a quick bow of her head to each sailor in turn, all while clutching the white coat tightly between her seeking fingertips. "i'll get to the bottom of this!"

and then she turns, police coat streaming behind her as she descends into the cargo hold from a staircase on the brig.

she can't ignore the instinct that rises up inside of her throat like magma in a volcano. she firmly and sternly believes that the suspect is inside of the ship as she walks the long, winding hallways beneath the deck, dark and damp and plagued by a heavy, all-encompassing atmosphere. what he's doing within, though? that remains a mystery, and it's the most concerning mystery of the entire case. that single unknown could dissolve the entire job she was assigned to within seconds, which makes it doubly important that she find this white-cloaked individual as soon as possible. so she walks quickly, feet moving faster than even her mind.

when the officer rounds a corner, though, she finds herself looking squarely at a stranger on the opposite end of a long hallway. blond, rough and tumble, but not wearing white. he doesn't fit the description, and yet...

blythe raises the white coat in his palms and then glances between him and it as if judging whether it would fit him or not. it's not difficult to imagine that the suspect could be shearing such a noticeable outfit in an effort to avoid detection. could it be that she's actually found her culprit?

[attr="class","skullbody"]They weren't alone here.[break][break]

Blythe wasn't the only one rounding the corner. Isaac charged along full speed ahead, not about to let either the mysterious boat climber or Hank Winters get the better of him. It was lucky that he saw the flash of pink in time, or else he may have risked bowling right into poor Blythe.[break][break]

Instead, he put the breaks on just in time, keeping a hand on the corner of the wall to ease himself back. Now, instead of running forward, he was able to ease back into a reclining position on the wall in a single, smooth motion. "Oh, hey. Didn't see ya there," he said, shooting the girl an easygoing grin. It was okay to pause for a bit. Rocket had an understanding with these shipping crews, even if it was a tense one. For the most part, they kept this deal to the shadows, but he wouldn't mind talking to one if it helped-[break][break]

One glimpse of that badge told Isaac everything he needed to know. Ah, shit. She was a cop.[break][break]

Between the mask and the jacket, Isaac's Rocket uniform wasn't exactly subtle. It was far more focused on keeping his civilian identity under wraps than on blending into quieter situations. Now that he was standing still, instead of charging forward like a vaguely black-and-yellow blur, it wouldn't take long for Blythe to put two and two together. That meant he had to get ahead of the narrative, and fast.[break][break]

"Let me guess why you're here," he said. "Saw someone strange boarding the ship? If so, good. That makes two of us." He eased himself off of the wall, motioning for both Blythe and Dhelmise to follow him. "The good news is, I didn't see anything in the cargo hold. The bad news is, if he's not going after the supplies, he's probably got something bigger planned. And that bigger's probably not gonna be something either of us like. So, c'mon. Let's get to the bottom of this."[break][break]

It wasn't every day that a Rocket so readily slid into a team-up with a cop. Would that be that, or would he still have some explaining to do?

that jacket. that mask.

it's unmistakable. he's from team rocket.

blythe can't recall how many horror stories she's been told of these fabled troublemakers. terrorism, drugs, smuggling, murder. their list of crimes is longer than she has time to recount. hell, some of these people are members of the most-wanted list back at the station. even more belong to a group of criminals so dangerous that blythe's been forcibly kept from conversations even mentioning them, lest she grows too much of an ego and imagines she can take them on herself.

that would never happen, of course, because blythe's biggest problem is likely her lack of an ego, but such big personalities are endemic to the newest cadets in the force. every precaution comes into play when interacting with team rocket.

so why does her heart slow? he's a part of hoenn's eternal bogeyman force, and yet her mind conjures reasons for why he couldn't be that bad. nurture, not nature, she tells herself. none of these people are born bad, and even those that embrace the label with open arms are still human; they still have the capability to be good. blythe knows some of her superiors would balk at this reasoning—just because they can be good doesn't mean they will, given the circumstances, but blythe can't ignore the possibility in good faith. if she didn't follow this man, blythe's certain she would live to regret it for many years after the fact. his logic's not half bad.

so, after a second of deliberation where she hurriedly works her lower lip between her teeth, blythe takes a chance and nods.

"ok," is her one-word admission as she draws closer to isaac with florges behind her. "lead the way."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Now that was what Isaac liked to hear. "Can do," he said, a grin on his face and focus in his eyes as he lead Blythe down the hall. "Way I see it, if he's not after the cargo, we've got three options. Best case scenario, he's just menacing the crew. He'll call a lot of attention to himself, finding him will be a breeze, and at worst we'll just need to fly some people to a clinic."[break][break]

"Now, if he's going for the captain's chair? That's where things get bad. No telling what a loose cannon like that's gonna do if he hijacks this ship," Isaac continued. "Only good news is that he'll have to stick around to see the journey through. That means he's spending a lot of time in one place, and we'll have plenty of time to fight him down to restore control. But if we fail . . . hoo boy."[break][break]

Isaac wasn't heading to the captain's quarters, though. In fact, he was heading deeper into the bowels of the ship. "If you ask me, the real worst case scenario is behind this door," he said as they approached a massive, heavy-looking steel door. "No security? Ugh, c'mon, don't tell me . . ." He grabbed the door with all of his might, Sanford wrapping its Power Whips around him to help him pull.[break][break]

When the door slid open, Blythe would see a tight, cramped looking engine room. With how small the room was, it was plain to see that there was nobody in here. It'd take someone made of paper to squeeze between those tight engines. Hell, the room would barely be big enough to fit Isaac and Blythe after accounting for their Pokemon.[break][break]

Upon seeing the empty room, Isaac sighed in relief. "I think you can see why I was nervous," he said, not wanting to even give such a grim possibility an acknowledgment by name. "Ugh. Part of me thinks we should beeline to the captains' quarters, but . . . I really don't want to leave this place unguarded. Not if security's too busy scrambling across the ship."[break][break]

"Time to flex those cop muscles. What do you think we should do?"

the pink-haired officer follows blithely after the masked marauder, highlighted only by the occasional floodlight lining the upper walls. he certainly has a good handle on the situation, far better than blythe herself does. it almost makes her jealous to recognize how out of her depth she is, but she clamps down on the feelings just as they arise. she has her own talents, he has his.

she only wishes she could figure out what her talents are.

her addled head is clear by the time they reach the engine room, sequestered behind a monolithic door made of steel and forged in fire. though it is clear, small enough for such a fact to be evident upon a single, swift once-over, the silence therein is more concerning than what they could have found. where else could the interloper be? what irrevocable problems could he be causing to greater sootopolis supply line with this fanatical stunt? what could he possibly want with this cargo liner?

they have to find out soon. isaac makes this abundantly clear—every second they spend worrying about this engine room is another second they could be spending stopping the culprit. alas, worries still creep ever onward. what could happen if they fail to secure this place? the ship sinks? goes aflame? isaac's right—they can't leave the engine room as it is. this time, though, he looks to her for the solution. she pales. how could she possibly come up with a solution?

paralyzation threatens to crawl up her arms as blythe ponders the monolithic task before her. her only escape is allowing instinct to take over.

old man fylleman's words echo in her head as she reaches for a crowbar held within a cranny inside the engine room; 'you need to think before you act, blythe!'

there's none of that here. not a thought goes through her head before she grabs the crowbar, slams the engine room door shut, and wedges the crowbar's hook into the space where the door meets the hinges. of course, the door jams irreparably, barely opening an inch from where it meets its frame. the thoughts only flood in after she's done this—how will they get the crowbar out after this is all over with? will the sailors need to get a specialist out here to remove it? will they have to unmount the door entirely to repair the hinges?

...alas, the door's closed. blythe glances at isaac from the edges of her eyes, looking much like a growlithe that's just torn up the newspaper. "well," she gulps. "nobody's gonna mess with the engine room now."

swallowing thickly, blythe turns on her heels. "cmon! we gotta look at the captain's quarters!"

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac blinked a few times in disbelief as Blythe decided to take the easy road. Of all the people in this room, he expected he'd be the one to jump to a solution like that! Once his shock wore off, he couldn't help but start grinning. "Oh, I like the way you think," he said, before joining her in turning on his heel.[break][break]

From there, the plan was surprisingly simple. "Good call," Isaac said. "Either he's there and it's showtime, or he's roaming the halls and we bump into him on the way up. He's not gonna be able to hide from us for long."[break][break]

Luckily, the commotion that Isaac had foreseen was nowhere to be found. There were a lot of people roaming the halls, but most of them were sailors or security personnel. If Blythe checked her jacket against them, even a quick glance would make it clear that it was a poor fit. The jacket was rather slender, while most of these men of the sea were on the burly side. The odds of a fit were unlikely. The odds of a fit smooth enough to blend in with the ship's hull? Astronomical.[break][break]

Isaac didn't pay them too much mind, outside of giving them quick warnings about seeing someone strange on the boat. Some paid the matter little mind. Others kept an eye out for their own safety. A few particularly intrepid ones stopped what they were doing and began searching the halls. But they all made sure to keep out of Isaac and Blythe's way to avoid holding them up.[break][break]

It was a fairly calm journey, at least until they reached the captain's quarters. Isaac pressed his ear up to the door. It was quiet in there. Too quiet. "I don't like the sound of this," Isaac muttered dubiously. "Either we guessed wrong and nobody's here, or the fight's already over."[break][break]

Perhaps Blythe would notice that the No Smoking sign above the door frame was ever so slightly askew. Perhaps she'd even notice the blinking red light, faintly visible in its shadow. Isaac was starting to look antsy, as if ready to take the direct approach already, but that might not have been such a good idea . . .

the halls are devoid of the suspect.

prior to her new career choice, blythe would heave a sigh of relief in response to this. alas, her vision of the situation has been modified, irrevocably changed under the fact that the safety of this entire ship now rests squarely on her shoulders... and the shoulders of the strange rocket man she now runs side-by-side with. how strange, blythe thinks to herself, that fate should come to pass like this. sworn enemies in ideology working together to secure the future's common good, something that, in many respects, both of their factions fight for with very different methods.

but intrigue runs deep. every burly security guard she compares to the jacket either seems woefully unfit for the article of clothing or far too fit. the suspect is still a mystery, and the mystery digs deep into her blood as both she and isaac draw near to the captain's quarters.

he fits his ear to the door. silence, he reports, as blythe steps back in an effort to take in the whole picture. red light therein, a sign askew above the door. her face falls as if comprehending a great, terrible truth about the universe.

"something already happened," she concludes breathily, face marred with terror for the future. "...but, when? are they still inside? are they waiting for us?"

there's only one way to find out. blythe pushes donmai in front of her, wary for battle.

"watch out," she whispers to isaac. "i'm gonna open the door."

she steels herself with one deep inhale. as her lungs inflate and she traps the air inside of her chest, she gives the order to donmai who, sharp as a whip, sends a long, snaking vine to wrap around the door knob, twist, and then push in, availing the dynamic duo of the state therein.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Blythe was on the ball in pointing out the red light, but may have been a little hasty in trying to pass it. As soon as the door opened, a Hydro Pump came launching right towards the duo. Isaac quickly pulled Blythe out of the way, taking a nasty hit to the shoulder that left him recoiling in the process. Outside of a hiss of pain, he said nothing, shaking his head and barreling into the room before the next volley could fire.[break][break]

The captain's quarters was about as Isaac expected it. The support swivel of his chair had broken, leaving it awkwardly swaying back and forth with the motion of the boat. Rope was wrapped tightly around it; it didn't take a genius to figure out what, or who, was on the other side. A laptop was haphazardly set up atop a control console, video footage indicating that the mysterious hijacker had been monitoring the room's entrance with some sort of security camera. A few windows were cracked, clear signs that a scuffle had broken out.[break][break]

And who else could have started this scuffle but-[break][break]

"Hank," Isaac said, narrowing his eyes at his on-again, off-again associate. As opposed to Isaac's more casual outfit, Hank's was downright clandestine. Between his thick jacket, heavy boots, ski mask, and sunglasses, there wasn't an inch of visible flesh on the man. Despite this, he managed to radiate an air of malice with little more than his body language. He aimed the Remoraid in his hand towards Isaac and Blythe, finger twitching atop its trigger fin.[break][break]

" 'Bout time you made it," he said, raising the Remoraid a hair higher and taking a step a hair closer. "And here I thought I was gonna have to do this job alone."[break][break]

"You always were bad at definitions," Isaac replied, Sanford floating closer to his side. "Going off script and hijacking the ship doesn't sound like part of the job to me."[break][break]

"Our job's the conquest of the Hoenn region. Anything else is just a means to an end. Just like these supplies are." Hank tossed the captain off of his seat, leaving the bound and gagged man prone on the floor as he slid into the now-vacant seat. "Think about it. League freighter drives off with the supplies they promised, not caring one bit for the tragedy the good people of Sootpolis have been through. It'll make 'em angry. It'll make 'em betrayed. It'll make 'em desperate."[break][break]

"It'll make 'em more of us."[break][break]

"Maybe we give the supplies to all those fresh recruits. Maybe we just keep it all for ourselves. I don't give a shit. They're all just more means to the same end. Just like this whole waste of a mission is. So, what's it gonna be? Are you gonna waste your time playing lifeguard, or are we stepping up to what Rocket's really about?"[break][break]

Isaac was silent as he listened to his partner's words. Yet, in the end, he simply nodded. ". . . Yeah," he said, taking a step closer to Hank. "Alright. I'm in. Hey, San? Take care of the cop for me, okay? I've got some business to handle."[break][break]

He walked up to Hank, fistbumping the man as they turned to talk business. As they did so, Sanford descended into the space between Blythe and Isaac. Its Power Whips extended wide, as if trying to block as much space between the two as possible. Its behavior was impossible to read, just more of the same ominous hovering. It didn't attack, but for how much longer would Blythe have that luxury?

she doesn't recognize the danger before it's nearly too late. the haggard lineaments of a stranger reconcile with her eyes behind the flashing lights of a hydro pump sent directly for her face.

isaac pulls her out of the way before she can flatline. she's left breathing heavily against the side of the door, leaning up against the wall and clinging to her clothing like it's the only thing that might keep her sane. her hands are shaking, her eyes blown wide and panicked. this is the most action she's seen since the force. every ounce of it is a far cry from her idyllic countryside lifestyle back home. god, why is she here? what's she doing? she clearly doesn't belong anywhere in this goddamn freighter, much less the force itself. why couldn't she have decided to help people in a charity instead?

through her doubts, isaac walks into the captain's quarters unmolested. in fact, he's speaking to the suspect. there's only a thin veil of hostility, belying... what? cooperation? blythe's wide blue eyes peek around the doorway's corner to watch the proceedings from relative safety. what she hears hollows out an abyss in her stomach as her throat drops into her torso.

betrayal. it lies thick and oppressive across her heart, suffocating all sense of reason that yet remains in her stress-addled mind. a libretto plays as the backdrop, voicing the concerns of a woman too trusting to work in her position. it insists that she's foolish for putting the cart ahead of the horses, for putting all of her eggs in one basket, for believing that every friendly face she sees has yet to carry a knife behind their backs. though her mind wonders what the supposed betrayer would gain from working with a cop for so long when she's more a liability than an asset, her heart's already made up its mind. her hand gravitates towards her belt loop as if on autopilot as isaac's dhelmise drifts closer and closer to her, a menacing shadow falling across blythe's face.

her hands, shaky as they are, fumble with the radio strapped to her pocket. she lets out a yelp of panic as it falls to the ground, and she goes stumbling after it as it slides across the floor outside the captain's quarters. soon enough, she's on her hands and knees too, and florges stands between blythe and her assailant as the pink-haired woman struggles to draw her radio into her trembling hands.

the hot sting of tears tinges the corners of her eyes as she struggles to press the buttons on her radio. backup! she needs backup!
