It’s not often that he has the chance to pull away from classes to go looking for pokemon to bulk up his team. But the entrance to the safari zone looms ahead of him, and the ticket he’s bought for a day just like this one is eagerly handed over when he’s ready to step inside.[break][break]

“Ready to see what we can find today?” he asks as he glances down at the bulbasaur hovering at his heels. Sprout rumbles back, and just like that they’re off, wandering into the foliage side by side. Per usual, Juno is loose and tucked into his backpack for safekeeping when she feels too lazy to cooperate with matters such as walking.[break][break]

Wren tries to be at least a little sneaky as he moves into a denser patch of tall grass, but he’s given away by his typical clumsiness when his foot gets caught on a root and he becomes a pinwheeling cyclone of noisy movement in the effort to stay upright.[break][break]

The noise draw the attention of something and Wren is able to catch himself just in time to see a treeko scuttle out of the brush, acting impassive despite the obvious curiosity that beckoned it out of its hiding place. “Juno, you might be better suited for this one,” he says over his shoulder, to his backpack. But the lazy eevee decides she is not quite done with her nap just yet and refuses to budge. He thought nearly falling on his face might’ve startled her awake, but Juno is ridiculously obstinate about sleep even on her best behaved days.[break][break]

With a sigh, his attention draws down to Sprout as one of the safari balls slides down into his hand. “Alright Sprout, looks like- oh, have you made friends?” The bulbasaur, it seems, took Wren’s pause as an opportunity and had already approached the treeko, who was now studying the bulb on her back with mild interest. “Use SLEEP POWDER just in case!” Sprout blinks at him curiously, but obliges and before the other Pokémon can react, a small puff of dusty pollen engulfs it’s face. Heavy-eyed, it droops back in a doze, leaving it open for capture as Wren tosses out the ball.

“Good job, Sprout!” Wren praises, bright grin on his face as he stoops to gather up the ball containing the drowsy treeko, and then give his bulbasaur a scratch on the head. His eyes drift between her cute lil face and the ball in his hand. “Er, hopefully it’s not too grumpy with you for the trick.” He laughs, a sheepish sound as he rights himself and shrugs. A chirping sound catches his attention before they can move much further into the zone, and Wren is quick to whirl around.[break][break]

“Aw, hey! Aren’t you cute?” The rookie ranger bends forward a bit to observe the torchic closer, grin still pasted across his face. The little chick, on the other hand, isn’t too pleased at being babied. Its wings flap in annoyance as it moves into a defensive stance, sparks fluttering up around it as if it means to accost him for the audacity of calling it cute. “Nope,” is all he mutters, and with a flick of his hand, he signals Sprout to take off running in the opposite direction. For a while, the torchic scuttles after them, puffed up and echoing angry peeps.

Wren skitters to a stop just shy of crashing into a small pond. A laugh crashes loose and he presses a hand to his forehead. "Oop, that was close." The toes of his shoes squish into the soft mud along the edge of the water. Finally, Juno decides to grace them with her presence, popping loose of the flap on his backpack with a wide yawn. "Look who finally showed up," he remarks to the bulbasaur wading into the shallow water. With a yip of protest, Juno hops free to get a drink from pond.[break][break]

It's a peaceful part of the area, Wren decides. If he wasn't actively looking for Pokemon to catch, he might plop down in the grass and simply let his pokemon play and explore for a while. Maybe catch a quick nap. Alas, the fanciful idea dissipates as something bubbles to the surface of the water. The top of a mudkip's head becomes visible, followed by the rest of its face. "Alright Sprout, back to it!" he chimes, "let's go with RAZOR LEAF this time! Gently, just enough to stun."[break][break]

Leaves whip up around the bulbasaur, only to be sent in a torrent toward the mudkip who is startled out of observation and unable to duck back into the water quickly enough. Not wasting any time, Wren follows up with a ball throw.

"Good shot, Sprout," he praises once again as tendril vines creep loose from the bulbasaur to fetch the pokeball now floating in the water, housing the little mudkip within. With a grin, Wren takes the presented ball and pockets it along with the other. Leaving only one remaining that's empty for use. With a thoughtful frown, he looks around for anything immediate that he might like to spring for as his two companions skitter around his feet.[break][break]

Nearby, a bagon is snoozing peacefully under a tree. Its eye peeps open to watch the little team with mild wariness. As if evaluating whether or not it will need to kick up its defenses. He's not sure the wild pokemon necessarily understands human gesture, but it's a whimsical little thought as he nods at it with an encouraging smile to return to its dozing. Wren won't disturb it if it won't disturb them. "Not much longer now, then we'll go home. Maybe we should start wandering back toward the entrance." Just to retrace their steps and make it easier in the case of finding anything else to take along with them.

Wren sighs quietly, arms stretching up above his head as they draw closer to the entrance. Even if he doesn't find anything else to engage with, that's fine! He's already got two new little guys to add to his collection, and they'll be as spoiled as the rest. Still, though, he doesn't want the ball to go to waste since he paid to be here and all...[break][break]

A whimpering yipping sound pulls Wren from his scouting, and he looks around. "Juno, are you-" he starts in, but when he looks down, there she is. Looking up at him with question in her big brown eyes. "Oh. Did you here that?" The sound starts up again, and the eevee twitches her ears, then springs away--leaving Wren to scramble to keep up.[break][break]

The grass parts and they finally come upon the source of the noise. "Oh no, what happened here?" A frown settles on his face as he observes the wild eevee with her leg caught in what looks to be the small burrow of some other sort of pokemon. Obviously scared and in pain, the eevee thrashes as they approach. "Sprout, use SLEEP POWDER again." As the bulbasaur releases the puffs of white spores, Wren does his best to assure the poor little thing that it'll be taken good care of. [break][break]

It's at least enough to calm the eevee and make it too drowsy to lash out, and he smooths the soft fur at the top of its head before carefully, carefully prying its leg loose of the unexpected trap, and it...doesn't look great. Whatever had been hiding inside must have thought the intrusion to be a threat. He collects the eevee into the ball with the intent of taking it to a center for treatment as soon as he leaves the safari zone.
