Not for the first time in his life, and certainly not for the last, Caleb felt out of place. The banquet hall that he and Calliope Marks stood in was filled with fancy gold-clothed tables decorated with expensive flower arrangements. A massive crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling in the center of the room, and a live band was setting up on a small stage also featuring a podium and microphone for various speakers. A banner hung above the stage reading The First Annual Slateport Charity Auction in bold lettering. It was the sort of event Caleb wouldn't be caught dead at, under normal circumstances.[break][break]
But once again, Caleb was at the mercy of his boss, Tam Fawley, who had thought it would be a "good idea" for some of the Slateport Rangers to help out at the event, as many of the proceeds would be going towards rebuilding and caring for various protected lands and Pokémon sanctuaries devastated by recent events across the region. Caleb hadn't worked much with Callie yet, but he was hoping she knew how to navigate these sorts of parties better than he did. He was also hoping nobody at the event happened to be an undercover Rocket.[break][break]
Stop with the paranoia He mentally scolded himself. Hoenn Rocket doesn't know who Caleb Harcourt is, let alone Caleb Sharpe.[break][break]
"So, any idea what we're actually supposed to be doing?" Caleb asked Callie, looking around awkwardly. Wait staff were setting the tables and readying the room for guests, who would be arriving within the hour. He leaned casually against a wall, his red arm band a stark contrast to the black dress pants, grey button down shirt and navy blue tie he wore. "There better be some free food, at least."
