it's an answer she should have expected. after all, why wouldn't he be proud of something he created? plucking her from internship and molding her with his own two hands... there's a satisfaction in the action she'll never quite understand.

big words but ones he stands by. regardless of how she views herself, his own image has been nothing short of incredible. he amounts this success to more than just illeana. Raziel Beckett, in retrospect, has also proven to be someone who’s grown into someone incredible under his visage.

and where he hopes, she knows. the failures of this form will become the foundation for the new version. it's not up for debate, really. she'll force it to happen whether it is fated or not. besides, who knows. she could surprise him.

"if the improvements earn more power under your thumb, under the league's thumb, is that enough?"

to forget what she's done, what she's fucked up, what she's broken. it might not make up for the three little words she didn't utter back but his had been a lie and she couldn't breathe out her own truths.

“whatever perception you have about us, about our dynamic, dash them immediately.”

a half-cough clears his throat.

“whatever we shared, whatever that was, was exacerbated due to our power dynamic. and for that, i apologize. i should have been cognizant and never let it become that personal.”

the same line of apology that came after he rejected the WISH TAG. to allow it to become physical is the basis of its undoing, he decides. that is when it became too daunting for her. all in the name of petty vengeance.

one last act of defiance to stone’s legacy.

“but you were never considered or regarded with such objectification. you do not belong to me, the league, or anyone for that matter. and to speak as such is undermining your own success.”

she chooses to sweep it under the rug like a pile of dirt she’ll clean up eventually. a relationship pried apart and tucked away to be out of sight, out of mind.

and for a time, it does work… until it doesn’t and she’s left simmering in a bitterness she’ll choke on. three words clog the throat and blind the mind. she detests it.

”you’re correct that i have been undermining my own success by attributing it to you. i made myself. you — and anyone else, for that matter — will take no credit in any success i find.”

not him. not the league. not even the despicable man who raised her.

and once upon a time, she might have thanked him for what he has given her, shown her, molded her. no longer. the time for that has come, gone, and died a painful death.
