There is a certain sense of reassurance in knowing that he’s not alone in this; that while others may have their own goals and motivations, Gavin understands his way of thinking. Mars had always told himself he didn’t need anyone else, that he could fight all of these battles alone, but he knows that much isn’t true at all. He had joined Team Rocket for their resources, to gain allies, and in the end he had gained much more.

They toast and they drink, and when allowing silence to overtake the room, Mars finds himself thinking back to the previous day’s meeting.

Gavin's somber expression shifts cold at the thought of the dissidents. Halla had been expected; he didn't think she should be allowed in the meeting at all, given her past history with leaking information to the League. The others, however?

"Never would've seen that in Kanto."

For all he laments the experiences he'd been forced to endure in Rocket's ruined region, there is a bitterness toward those who took Hoenn for granted. Delarosa talking Kanto up as utopia, Decker openly dismissing them as stupid for following orders from the Boss. Even Kanto's veterans weren't exempt from Gavin's ire: did Beckett truly want a return to how things had been? (When had he become Beckett again?)

"Defiance will be met with discipline." That was part of his job, though he didn't relish in it. "They don't realise how lucky they are that it won't be their families I target."

Mars hadn't been in Kanto, but he knew as well as any Kanto veteran what it was to have family suffer in your place.

Spoiled is what Mars would call them. Spoiled by their circumstances. Spoiled by the fact that they believe themselves to be irreplaceable. They clearly never had anyone to discipline them in their lives; to teach them to be respectful.

”No, and they probably will never realise how lucky they are.” Mars sighs, taking another sip from his glass. He embraces the way the spirit burns, knowing well the slow poison has begun to take effect: he’s beginning to feel light-headed – calmer, even.

”They really do need discipline… It’s like they think we’re all just friends hanging out and casually talking about starting a war or some shit.” He chuckles lightly in pure disbelief, taking another sip. He highly doubts children like Halla actually see Rocket as their “friends”, though. By now, it has become more than clear to Mars that she’s nothing but a liability.

”Gods, I’m starting to sound like my grandfather.”

He had thought it back during the meeting too, but the vodka makes it so much easier to admit to how much that thought bothers him.

Gavin shakes his head, lifting a hand to brush hair out of his face. Purple bruises are stark against fair skin. He levels Martín with his gaze of molten gold.

"Your grandfather would be advocating for the death of their families to keep them in line."

No matter how deplorable they were, they had not fallen so far as that. He wants to believe that even Theo and Walsh would not want for such extremes, but doubt needles in the back of his thoughts.

"If we are without discipline, we're no better than the League."

Their gazes meet, gold on gold, and in Gavin’s eyes Mars sees grim reminders. He’s right, of course. These are facts about his grandfather that he had learned on the very day they met, when he was no more than a boy – on the day his grandfather forced Mars to watch the murder of his own father, the man Emilio Marzán had once called his son-in-law.

He sighs, deeply. Shattered and bloodstained as the memories may be, his grandfather’s words are as if etched into his very being.

They’re not alike. Mars would never make someone pay for another’s mistakes. He would never harm someone just because of how much pain it would bring to another. Everyone is responsible for their own actions, and they must deal with the consequences. Such mentality is foundational to him.

”Oh, I agree completely. The League’s lack of discipline is part of what has led Hoenn to end up in this state.” Lack of discipline, lack of control, and lack of awareness. ”Some people just don’t seem capable of basic respect.”
