Chu-e pants as he makes his way through the battlefield.

His body is straining. Crystal works over a few small nicks and cuts, writhing like black larvae as they force the skin back together. Blood is drying and sticky on his clothes and sweat makes his hair stick to his body in uncomfortable ways.

Beside him, two pokemon- Creams his Lopunny, who keeps an arm around him to help him walk. Princess the Gardevoir stays close, alert and tense as she keeps lookout.

While the original goal was to be a distraction, now Chu-e is retreating.

What he doesn't know is he is doomed to fail.

Tam Fawley's earlier cautions are drowned out by the rush of blood in Orion's ears as he spots the man who'd mutilated him across the battlefield. That Chu-e is battered and bloody matters only in the sense that it gives the ranger an advantage.[break][break]

"Cassie!" he snarls, and the Decidueye's luminous wings snap open as she readies an arrow. "Shackle him!"[break][break]

The point of her arrow gleams even in broad daylight as she looses it toward Choi's shadow. Aiming to SHACKLE his SPIRIT and pin him in place as Orion takes off across the battlefield in a full sprint.[break][break]

To a degree, he had known it would come to this: that the squad would be scattered, that their pokémon might die in battle, and that if they didn’t manage to stop Team Rocket, the consequences would be much worse than that.

The Lycanroc’s HOWL rings through Littleroot Town – loud and full of sorrow. His Togekiss had fallen and Tam had been left with no choice but to leave its broken body behind, hoping that Caleb Harcourt’s pokémon wouldn’t suffer the same fate it had. Caleb had wanted to face the masked criminal (Zev Harcourt) alone, and Tam, knowing that this could likely be a distraction and that many others likely had their sights on the theatre, had decided to trust in the cadet as he had many times before.

The next distraction is one much different.

It’s the sound of Orion Lykos calling for an attack.
[break][break]
Tam is not the sort of person to hesitate, and at that moment, a decision is quickly made. On their way back to the theatre, they veer away from their intended course – his Lycanroc guiding him in the direction the sound had come from.

”ORION.”

What the hell is he doing? Why is he going after someone who seems to be fleeing? Does he intend to arrest Chu-e Choi, or…

Tam knows Orion. He knows of Orion’s hatred for Team Rocket. He had warned the squad not to act recklessly because he knows that hatred to be blinding.

The shinning Lycanroc growls, its bright gaze fixed on their opponent, yet blue eyes meet green ones instead, questioning.

One moment Chu-e is running and the next he's pinned to the ground. He almost falls over from it, only Creams keeping him upright. The Lopunny's ears flip up somewhat as she turns to face Orion Lykos.

A shattered conversation from pokemon to pokemon. Creams keeps her body between Orion and Chu-e, ready to break his jaw if he gets too close.

Princess goes after the cause of the problem. The Gardevoir narrows her eyes at Orion and his bird, recognizing him. She had assisted in scrambling the brain of his Silvally and helped peel the flesh from his bones, after all.

A Tracehas her glowing with her own Illumination. A hand is raised to call down a Thunderbolt on both trainer and pokemon. They are not focused on Tam Fawley- for the moment.

Orion hears but does not truly register the sound of his name, cried across the battlefield from a captain who certainly deserves better than this reckless cadet. He does not pause in his pursuit, hesitating only when the Lopunny places herself between the two men.[break][break]

Lips pull back from teeth in a feral snarl, energy pulsing down his prosthetic arm as titanium fingers curl to fist.[break][break]

Thunder rumbles, and Cassiopeia reacts with fierce speed, diving in for a SUCKER PUNCH on the Gardevoir while also putting distance between herself and her trainer. The THUNDERBOLT proves relatively ineffective on the Grass-type, who ruffles her feathers as she endures its shock.[break][break]

"Going somewhere?"[break][break]

Orion's voice is frighteningly cold.

This too he had come to expect, for it would have been foolish to think his authority would always be respected in the heat of battle – it’s obvious the only thing Orion will listen to right now is his own hatred. Who is this person? Is this how Orion acts with any Rocket that crosses his path or is there more to all of this? Had bringing him to Littleroot been a mistake on Tam’s part?

The weight of his own choices falls heavy upon him, and yet his next choice is also what he’d expect from himself: two against one hardly seems fair, he can’t leave Orion to fight alone.

”...Go.” One simple command is all it takes for the growling Lycanroc to break its defensive stance and jump forward. It dashes across the field towards the Lopunny, sharp CLAWS intending to both cause harm and weaken.

Tam himself steps closer to Orion, yet his gaze is now on the man whose shadow has been SHACKLED by the Decidueye.

”Orion, what are you doing?”

His tone is calm, unemotional.

Chu-e mirrors Temp in ways neither of them will ever be aware of. While Temp is coaxing his Vaporeon to Haze, Chu-e does not answer Orion Lykos or Tam Fawley with words.

He tugs at the shackle weakly.

His eyes are glassy, staring through the two men even if aware of them but still somewhere else. I should hurry and escape. Echoes lightly in his mind. Beast Choi would never had allowed himself to stay in this situation as long. Beast Choi is an ugly shadow that claws at his shoulders while whispering in his ear constantly. Pushing him.

Chu-e twitches his fingers over pokeballs on his hip. It would be nothing to release his full arsenal. Blow up his Lickilicky in their faces and use that chance to fly off.

But something else nags Chu-e. It's the kind of slow realization that less explodes and more unfurls in the mind. He always knew but never accepted it.

Chu-e just isn't that man anymore.

He can't push himself to keep up with the phantom of a man he hates. Beast Choi is dead.

And Chu-e is tired.

He sees his pokemon fight in almost slow motion. A Sucker Punch landing. Creams throwing up her arms to defend herself against the Lycanroc. Never ever thinking of stepping out of the way to keep him safe.

So Chu-e answers Orion with actions and not words.

By doubling over. Blood and black, pulpy matter spew from his mouth, splattering over the ground.

Chu-e's pokemon freeze. Just for an instant. Glances exchanged.

Princess's body glows bright and then explodes, her Mega form flowing like a wedding dress. Tired of playing around, she tries to grab the Decidueye in a powerful Psychic and slam her to the ground.

Creams experiences a similar burst of energy. A Z Move flourishes from her body; she grasps the Lycanroc to slap it's face over and over, before dotting it off with a kiss.

There is no trace of the monster Orion had witnessed in whatever dungeon they'd dragged him to, nor the one he'd seen on Slateport beach. He doesn't care. He remembers how the man had flipped a switch to snivel and whine to the officers who'd rushed onto the scene.[break][break]

This was another game. He's sure of it.[break][break]

(Even if it wasn't, would he stop? No.)[break][break]

"Getting revenge."[break][break]

He has never spoken with such frigidity toward his Captain, but it's not aimed at Tam Fawley. He's still staring at Chu-e, at the Pokemon standing in his way. Ordinarily he would hesitate to hurt them, but that Gardevoir had been the monster that had broken his Silvally's mind.[break][break]

Titanium fingers curl around a pokeball and throw it, hard.[break][break]

Perseus does not need to be given command; the moment the Beast Killer is on the field, it spots the Gardevoir and its eyes burn with rage. The sharp claws of the chimera's front paws glow with a sickly green energy before it launches itself at the mega evolved Gardevoir, crossing those paws in a devastating X-SCISSOR.[break][break]

Whether it was hit by the attack or merely distracted, Cassiopeia recovers from the PSYCHIC assault. A look is exchanged with her trainer... before a SPOTLIGHT blooms above Chu-e Choi.

He will never understand it. Not really. He can act as if he does, he can make an attempt, but the truth is that Tam has never wanted revenge against anyone. He has been angry, he has grieved, and he has wished for things to be different, but none of those feelings have ever resulted in hating someone for it. Does Orion mean revenge against all of Team Rocket or had this person in particular done something to him?

Tam would ask, but the sudden burst of a mega evolution draws his attention back to the fight. This might get rough. The Lopunny hits his Lycanroc with a barrage of slaps, sealing the attack with a kiss. Is that some sort of Z-Move? Tam can only assume as much, given Procyon’s reluctance to attack once it is done.

That reluctance only lasts a second, though.

Cassiopeia shines a SPOTLIGHT upon the man Orion had been pursuing, and the Lycanroc’s attention immediately turns towards him. Sharp fangs glisten under the light, Procyon’s menacing snarling ringing loud and clear. The wolf leaps, intending to attack…

”Dammit, Orion!” It’s in a hurry that Procyon is called back to the safety of a pokéball’s confines, preventing him from causing any harm. To think his pokémon had almost been forced to attack a person…Tam snaps. ”Is this really what you want?!”
[break][break]
To hurt someone? To kill them?
[break][break]
”Do you really want to be just like them?”
[break][break]
A hand hovers over the pokéballs clipped to his belt, a choice being made. What is the right choice to make? He won’t have his pokémon attack, but it also wouldn’t be right to shield a potential criminal…

Thankfully, Tam is an experienced enough trainer to know which moves won't be too affected by the SPOTLIGHT, and it’s his Blissey that he decides to release. Gloved hands are clenched into fists.

”...Heal.”
[break][break]
Mochi does no more than glance at the stranger before turning her attention back to her allies. She casts the healing waters of her LIFE DEW onto the Decidueye and Silvally, helping relieve any harm they had suffered during their time in Littleroot Town.

Creams shrieks in anger and fear when the Lycanroc turns from her to her Trainer. She grabs for it desperately- but it's too fast and too sudden. She had already been tired from previous battles before this and it shows in sluggish movements.

Chu-e wobbles on his feet from his previous expulsion but doesn't fall. Yet.

Tam Fawley would be able to see it clear as day, though. So would Orion Lykos. The crystals that lurched to the surface, writhing and black, preparing for the Lycanroc's teeth and claws. It doesn't come, so they linger halfway, like an alert guard on their own.

Creams swings her attention over to the Decidueye. She screams again, hateful and eyes with tears pooling in the corners; she thought she had lost him again. Against her better judgement, she kicks off towards thee ghost bird. Her fists are full of lighting as she takes out all her rage in Thunder Punches.

This leaves Chu-e open.

Princess takes the brunt of the attack full on. She shudders and almost falls. If she had not taken a stronger form, she probably would have.
Blood seeps from the X shaped wound; this was not a normal battle. This as life and death.

She slams another Psychic into the Silvally. Her attack is equally cruel as she attempts to pin the other pokemon to the dirt and crush him under the force of her power.

From behind, Chu-e coughs.

"Yes, it's what I want."[break][break]

He has never been more certain.[break][break]

Orion was not a terrible person. He was awkward and bitter but possessed of a soft sweetness disguised by a prickly outer shell. He was not, as of yet, a murderer. But there is no hesitation as he turns his attention back to the failing body of Chu-e Choi.[break][break]

"He tortured me," the Ranger spits. "He cut off my fucking arm."[break][break]

Death would be too good for him, but does Orion trust the League he'd once worked for to deliver justice?[break][break]

No.[break][break]

Cassiopeia is assailed by brutal THUNDER PUNCHES, but her Grass-typing resists the onslaught. A LEAF-BLADED arrow is nocked and fired, as per the SPOTLIGHT'S decree, toward the collapsed form of Chu-e Choi.[break][break]

Thanks to its own PSYCHIC MEMORY, Perseus resists the Gardevoir's PSYCHIC assault. Thrown by the force of it regardless, the Beast Killer leaps back to its paws with a snarl and lunges for Chu-e Choi with a PSYCHIC-TYPE MULTI-ATTACK.[break][break]

Even Avatars, if that's what this monster was, were not invincible.[break][break]

Orion Lykos is not a murderer, Tam knows as much. Yet here, when facing the person who had caused him so much suffering, who had taken so much from him, it’s obvious that revenge and murder are the only things in his mind.

Most people would back off, either due to agreeing with Orion’s sentiment or due to the discomfort of arguing with a victim about their aggressor. Unfortunately for Orion, Tam is not most people.

”No, Orion.” Cold, sharp, and angered. Blue eyes fix on him and him alone, the battle momentarily being ignored. ”If you do that, you’ll be just like them. We don’t kill. Capture him and bring him to justice, you know that’s what you should do.”

But is it the right thing to do?
[break][break]
It’s not sympathy for Chu-e Choi. It’s not some display of righteousness. It’s the simple fact that Tam doesn’t want to see Orion do something he might regret forever. Taking a life is a grievous act; it’s something most people would never even think of doing. It marks someone, taints them, and forever changes them. There’s no going back after such an act; it forever marks them.

Tam doesn’t want to see Orion become that, but he had also seen the crystals on Chu-e Choi’s skin. Is aiming to kill the only way to deal with an enemy avatar?

Orion’s pokémon attack.

His gaze remains fixed on Orion Lykos.

”...Please, Orion.”

Why does all this matter so much to him? It really should. He shouldn't care if this criminal dies or lives. Under different circumstances, he wouldn't.

Princess reacts before Creams can.

She does everything in her power to get between the Silvally and her trainer.

In the end, the brutal strikes that dig into her previous wounds are too much. Princess reverts back to her normal form as she falls.
A pool of crimson around her, tears in her eyes as she reaches for her Trainer.

Chu-e stares at her and watches his pokemon die in front of him. Fresh blood, her blood, speckles his face.

A hand in his pocket. Wobbling on his feet.

Chu-e calls back Creams. She yells in outrage as he does this.

Then he falls to his knees proper, hands raised. Head down. The crystals retract to show smooth skin.

A hacking cough wracks his body once more.

And then Chu-e falls forward. His fingers mingle in the blood and dust of his pokemon. Unconscious.

He turns back to see the Gardevoir collapse in defense of her trainer. He feels no mercy for it as he might've had this Pokémon not participated in his torture, his mutilation, the corruption of his Silvally's mind.[break][break]

It was as much a monster as Chu-e Choi.[break][break]

The terrorist recalls his Pokemon. Orion does not. As far as he's concerned, the man is preparing to send out another.[break][break]

"Perseus. Cassie."[break][break]

Kill him, he's going to say, but then Choi falls to his knees and lifts his hands and Orion knows an overwhelming, all-consuming rage. How dare he? How dare he think he was worthy of anything but death?[break][break]

His Pokemon snap to attention, ready to lunge on command.[break][break]

He grits his teeth and spits.[break][break]

"Stand down," he snaps, as Choi passes out. He glares at Tam. "I'm not doing this because I've changed my mind. I'm doing it because I don't want to spend my life in prison for killing a hostage."[break][break]

He recalls his Silvally before it can lunge for the unconscious man's throat. (His hands shake.)[break][break]

He turns away from Tam, shoulders tense. (There are tears in his eyes.)[break][break]

Cassiopeia glides down from her perch to wrap her starry wings around him, and he hugs her tight.

”Maybe you’re right. Maybe I don’t know you at all.” Tam responds, his tone seemingly back to its usual lull. There’s something there that can’t quite be placed; an emotion not even Tam would know to recognize in himself.

”But I want to.” He thinks. ”And I don’t want you to become something you would hate.”

For once, he keeps his thoughts to himself, his gaze being pulled away from Orion just as the Gardevoir falls in defence of her trainer. Blood. Pain. Death. It’s a shame. How many pokémon will have to die because of the ideals of Team Rocket?

Of course, Tam has no idea what this Gardevoir had done to Orion and his Silvally. He’s really missing a lot of the context here. In the end, Orion’s right: he really doesn’t know him at all.

What Tam does know is that Chu-e Choi’s surrender means there’s nothing that could legally justify the use of lethal force.

There’s a heavy sigh, but he still feels no relief at all.
[break][break]
He doesn’t give Orion a response. He sees the tears, he sees the way his hands shake, and he sees the pain. He does nothing at all about any of these things. What can he do, anyway? Nothing he could say or do would fix things. He doesn’t know what Orion is going through, he doesn’t understand it, and as such, he can’t make things better. Tam is deeply aware of this at that moment, just as he’s aware of the fact that Orion probably hates him for stopping him.

He tries not to think about that.

Blissey is called back, releasing his Lycanroc and Klefki in its place. Walking over to the unconscious man, Tam instructs the Lycanroc to dig a grave for the Gardevoir – he had been forced to leave his Togekiss’ body behind after facing Zev Harcourt, and in their death, no pokémon deserves that. The Klefki acts as handcuffs, FAIRY LOCK in place. Tam has no choice but to pick this stranger up, carrying him over his shoulder now that he’s meant to be apprehended.

He’s surprisingly light.

How could someone so feeble have caused so much harm?
