The sun shone down, slanting through the leaves of the copse of trees where Fern stands, awaiting further instruction. Mt. Pyre seems less foreboding on a day like today – though he figures that has to do with the fact that this is technically the base of the mount, rather than the eerie slopes themselves. Still, for once it’s an unseasonably warm autumn day and the spectral presence of the environment can’t seem to overpower it.[break][break]

He frequents this area often, and it’s not unreasonably far from his home in Sootopolis, so he figures that’s the sole reasoning behind his being tasked with today’s objective. Because there’s definitely nothing else about him that screams active or outdoorsy. But in the days leading up to the operations taking place further up Mt. Pyre, all hands should be on deck, right?[break][break]

Even if he hasn’t the foggiest of how to secure supply packs in trees.[break][break]

It’s a nice idea–a smart one. Store the supplies and they’ll be of use in the coming days when the meteor impacts. But making sure they stay where they’re meant to be…that’s the tricky bit. So he’s definitely not touching anything until support arrives. Well, mostly. He’s maybe rummaged through a few bags[break][break]

But only out of curiosity! Cross his heart.

Gavin accepts the mission in spite of it being what some might classify as 'grunt work', because he believes in the value of what it might represent. Supplies that they might fall back on should their operation at Pyre go awry and they be forced to retreat.[break][break]

As the saying goes: if you want something done right, you do it yourself.[break][break]

A soft pop heralds his presence, the Beheeyem that'd TELEPORTED him onto the scene vanishing back into the capsule that Gavin clips back to his belt.[break][break]

Amber eyes sweep critically over the grunt on duty and the packs of supplies, noting that a few of them had been opened and re-sealed. His brows arch.[break][break]

"You know we take the hands of thieves, mm?"[break][break]

Unsmiling, tone flat, he seems entirely serious in his inquiry.

There’s nothing really fancy in these packs, much to Fern’s chagrin. It’s all camp-y sorts of items. Useful for hiding in the forest, or basic first aid.[break][break]

But it’s almost like looking for a needle in a haystack. Perhaps one bag will yield more interesting contents. He doesn’t even notice the arrival of assistance.[break][break]

The level tone of a secondary voice cuts through the quiet and Fern can’t help the way he startles to attention. The bag in his hands slips straight down, dropping to the ground with a thud. “I can’t say that I was,” he response, shuffling to stand a bit straighter, “but I’m no thief, so I’ll keep my hands, thank you.”[break][break]

An awkward pause as their hands fold behind their back, and a rough clearing of their throat before a hastily added, “Underboss Merlino, sir.”[break][break]

Fern smiles then, wide and thin-lipped. “Just curious about the contents, that’s all.”

Gavin doesn't smile back, but humour softens the hard lines of his stoic features.[break][break]

"I didn't think so," he admits. "It's a poor thief who steals things in plain sight, and Rocket have no use for those."[break][break]

Scarred hands set to work ensuring that the packs are secure, tightening straps and checking for tears. Finding none, the underboss calls out a Sylveon from a luxury ball at his belt. With a click of Gavin's tongue and a simple gesture, the fae creature uses its TELEKINESIS to carefully maneuver the packs into the branches.[break][break]

"You'll be at Pyre as well," Gavin recalls, shifting his amber gaze to the grunt. "How do you feel about the assignment?"

Fern releases a breath that they were only semi-aware of holding. Cillian Quinn is as stoic as they come, but they sense the thread of humor that wiggles its way into his tone, slight as it is.[break][break]

“Useless is the last thing I would like to be,” Fern answers, and this for once the sentiment is genuinely meant. They’ve grown fond of their place among the ranks since their recruitment. Even when relegated to tasks like this one.[break][break]

Following suit, he releases his haunter from a pokeball in his pocket. Able to lift multiple bags in her claws, she LEVITATES up among the branches to deposit caches hidden by the foliage. [break][break]

They follow along underneath, and when Gavin speaks up their attention shifts back to him. “I am honored to do my part,” they say lightly. It’s maybe a touch forced—it’s the perfunctory answer, after all. A part of them wishes they were assigned to Littleroot instead, but that’s only out of a desire to gravitate to where jayden cross goes. Fern is better suited to Mt. Pyre, and more familiar with it as well.[break][break]

He holds those honest cards closely, unsure of what the underboss is really looking for in asking.[break][break]

Behind them, some of the packs they’d already set into place begin falling back to the ground, knocked loose by something loudly rustling about.

Fern's next answer is not so satisfying, because it's exactly what Gavin expects to hear. It's not what he wants to hear. Yet it's wise on the part of the grunt to tread carefully around an underboss whose reputation is built on the bones of brutality.

Whether or not he'd have continued to push as they carried out their task, Fern will never know, for the crack of a breaking branch draws the attention of the underboss to the first set of trees at the mountains base... and the Ursaring standing over the torn branch, long claws digging into the supplies. Gavin's eyes narrow.

"We'll trap it."

A luxury ball is flicked toward the ursine offender, Gavin's Dhelmise launching tendrils of void when its master clicks his tongue. SHADOWS HOLD the thick limbs of the Ursaring at bay, leaving it more vulnerable to attack.

Perhaps if he had a better sense of what would be acceptable to hear, Fern might be more forthcoming about his reservations. They are only selfish feelings, though. Protective ones, for someone that Fern is pretty certain needs little to no coddling on the battlefield. jayden cross is far more capable than himself in combat. In all reality, he’d likely be more of a hindrance.[break][break]

And maybe he’s also a little protective of whatever it is that is unraveling between them that he doesn’t exactly feel like having a tell-all with their superior about it. “Glad to hear it.” Even if Fern knows that it’s the boring, safe answer, and he’s sure Gavin knows this just as acutely.[break][break]

He’ll leave it for Gavin to press about, if he truly wants to know the truer response.[break][break]

The massive ursaring, however, is a major distraction. And maybe a welcome one, if it weren’t actively destroying the work they’d completed. His eyes dart to Gavin. “Not just chase it off? Alrighty.” He shrugs, and recalls Morticia’s. The haunter’s attacks would only sail right through the normal-type.[break][break]

While the Dhelmise is busy securing the formidable ursine, Fern looses his froslass from an ultra ball in a flourishing movement. Wasting no time, cold air whips up as a dozen frozen shards shoot toward the ursaring’s exposed side in an ICICLE CRASH.

With those simple words, Gavin's intended fate for the Ursaring is made clear. His Pokemon will hold it down not with the purpose of restraint, but elimination.[break][break]

Unable to escape thanks to tendrils of shadow, the Ursaring takes the brunt of the Froslass' attack... and then some. The shadowed Dhelmise seems to pulse with an eerie energy, its trap ensuring the target took extra damage. Attempts by the bear to SLASH at the bindings pass right through the Ghost-types body. It begins to DRAIN its captive of life.[break][break]

Sylveon stalks forward, too, the sweet-looking fairy bearing its fangs for a DRAINING KISS.[break][break]

"I wonder if you might give another a different answer."[break][break]

Gavin doesn't look away from the struggling bear.

“Fair point.” Fern definitely isn’t here to contest the method they work with. He’s just naturally curious enough to ask questions when they arise.[break][break]

Truly, he has no qualm ensuring that the ursaring is subdued. It means that their work won’t be undone further than it already has. The last thing Fern really wants to do that afternoon is repeat an easy task.[break][break]

Ice pelts against the ursine’s side, and it roars in frustration as it’s unable to to break from the dhelmise’s hold. Frost wicks over its fur, leaving it icy cold to the touch even without the drain from its captor and the attacking sylveon. His froslass drifts back to his side, coolly observing the scene.[break][break]

It’s only then that Fern fully registers that the aim is not simply knocking the beast out, but he’s not going to protest against the decisions of his superior. Silently, though, he wishes it a safe travel up to the slopes of the mount where other spirits rest.[break][break]

Though Gavin remains focused on what is in front of them, Fern’s gaze travels sideways to watch him. “I don’t suppose you would be incorrect to guess as much. But who asks makes all the difference.”

[attr="class","main"]Within the grasp of the Dhelmise, the Ursaring's struggle weakens. Worn down by the cold, it slumps against shadowed bindings. The eerie energy of the shadow Pokemon's GIGA DRAIN greedily drinks what remains of its life-force before retracting its hold and allowing the spent creature to slump against the trunk of the very tree it had sought to climb.[break][break]

With its PHANTOM FORCE, the Dhelmise vanishes to reappear at Gavin's side. Its compass slowly spins.[break][break]

At last, the gaze of the underboss returns to fern delaney.[break][break]

"It is better to be scolded in your honesty than to be caught in a lie." There is a weight behind his words that speaks less of threat and more of memory. "But I will not push further."[break][break]

It was enough that the other was prepared to do his duty at Pyre.[break][break]

"I don't expect we'll be troubled here," with a vague gesture at the trees in which they've slung the packs, "for some time." He makes a mental note to send patrols out to check the supply before their op, just in case.

Fern watches as the dhelmise returns to Gavin. “I, for one, certainly wouldn’t want to be caught by you.” The dryly humorous remark is pointed toward the Pokémon.[break][break]

His own froslass hovers close, acting as though it’s participating in the conversation with the way it looks up at Gavin in tandem with Fern.[break][break]

“I suppose you’re right,” he says with a relenting sigh, though the way his tone shifts, it suddenly feels less like an expected admonishment. “I just…know my talents are better suited here,” Fern offers despite the underboss’ retraction.[break][break]

“Any disappointment in my placement isn’t guided by logic. That’s all.”[break][break]

And it’s best to clamp down on that for the time being. He has told jayden cross that they trust him, and have faith in Rocket’s continuance. They should not falter in this.[break][break]

“Hopefully any other observing eyes take this as a lesson.” His attention returns to the heaped over ursaring, half-frozen over and depleted of its lifeforce. “Should we do something with it, though? Move it away from our stores?”

Gavin laughs without humour, a rough and dry sound that scrapes its way past a smoke-scarred throat. He shakes his head.[break][break]

"Few would."[break][break]

Though he would have honoured Fern's desire to remain silent in wake of that knowledge, he does listen carefully to the other's elaboration. His stern countenance softens with an edge of understanding.[break][break]

"Pyre was not my first choice, either."[break][break]

He offers nothing further, only a simple statement to show he understands. Gavin would much rather be on the meteor; Lulu Flint would be there, and with luck it would be devoid of the violence of Pyre and Littleroot. But violence is what the underboss is known for, praised for, and thus his assignment had been as expected as it was unfortunate.[break][break]

"Mm. Yes. I don't imagine survivors will appreciate the smell." Now a touch of humour warms the ice of his tone, and his laugh is less harsh than it had seemed before. "We don't have to take it far, only far enough."[break][break]

His Dhelmise returns to the bear's side, binding it with chains of steel rather than shadow.

A laugh is still a laugh, in Fern’s opinion. Humorless or not, the sound does well to ease up any tensions he might’ve still felt in the underboss’ presence.[break][break]

“Better to not be an exception to the rule in this case.”[break][break]

Normally Fern thrives when standing out. At the hands? Tendrils? Of a shadow dhelmise, though? Hard pass.[break][break]

When he admits to his reasoning, Fern isn’t expecting any sort of commiseration or mutual sharing. If anything, he almost felt a bit like he should be honest, at least to a small degree. So when Gavin offers his own empathizing, Fern glances at him– obviously curious.[break][break]

“Is that so?”[break][break]
