He didn't know who this was, which meant, naturally, that they were a rocket.

Pretty poor timing. Gwyar couldn't help but steal glances to the peak of Mt. Pyre, briefly considering just bolting before dismissing the idea.

Best to deal with whoever this youngster was now than to lead them back to the machine.

"I don't suppose you could just let me pass without following." The blonde asked politely.

In the aftermath of their toe to toe with ollie morales and annalise henderson , Fern found himself separated from Marza Volchitsa in the chaos of the moment. [break][break]

While he was fairly certain she’d hold her own just fine (no matter how many knocks she’d taken,) he wasn’t in the best state to be alone.[break][break]

Grief had made him angry in the wake of his dragapult’s fall, though, and as he pulled himself up the foggy slope, he determined that there was no way he wasn’t getting up there to see this through.[break][break]

If he didn’t, then Cecilia dying would have been a pointless act, and Fern can’t grapple with that.

His haunter floated behind him, dark aural energy matching his own, maw opening to waggle a long tongue at the man who crossed paths with them. It curled like a cat’s in taunt before rolling back into her mouth. [break][break]

“Why would I do that?” he groused back from under the fox mask that sat crooked on his face. It wasn’t smart to engage this guy—he was probably two of Fern put together and then some.[break][break]

But the need to direct his anger made him a bit of an instigator.[break][break]

"I see." Gwyar said. His march began to pick up in speed, his polite smile slowly dissolving into a focused stare. "Unfortunate."

He was in a rush, for once, saying the region's fate hung in the balance was not an exaggeration. He needed to deal with this person expeditiously.

"I'm afraid I'll have to get rough, then. My apologies." He said honestly. And with that, he rushed the smaller man, deceptively fast for a man his size, closing the distance between them in an instant.

He did not stop— it was a full body tackle.

“Awful polite for someone making threats,” Fern replies flatly. If he were in better spirits, it would be amusing. Something for him to play off of. Finally! Some good verbal sparring. Except he is not quite in the mood, and he can’t stop to think about it, because the guy is not wasting any time.[break][break]

A fleeting thought– oh shit. He’s fast fast.[break][break]

And then impact. For the second time that day, Fern feels the air being driven from his lungs as his stomach wrenches uncomfortably.[break][break]

Obviously, he goes tumbling back. The momentum and power behind it was too much for him to stay on his feet, and truly, for all of the fight Fern has just touted, he sort of just wants to lay right there and stare at that foggy sky.[break][break]

Be smart and play possum. Just like you always do.[break][break]

It’s this thought that drives him up, shaky limbs as he manages a runner’s crouch. No formal fighting etiquette. It’s all cornered, pacing animal action. When Fern darts back at him, it’s nowhere near as fast, but he doesn’t aim any hits. Instead, he ducks at the last minute and dives in an attempt to take him out at the knees.

'They are not wrong.' Gwyar thought wryly as he stared at the splayed out figure of the rocket with a half grimace.

He got some physical feedback when pulling off such stunts on people— the somewhat thin person had felt rather light.

If they had known what was good for them, they would've stayed down. They had put up a fight and gotten KO'd; far as 'duty' was concerned', they had tried.

But that was not what they did. Gwyar felt a small measure of respect for the smaller person as they forced themselves back up.

Respect, and a little frustration. As they came charging at him, he observed with wide open eyes, releasing a soft grunt when they suddenly ducked low. This wasn't going to end well.

His legs moved reflexively and much like as if someone had gone for a shot to the crotch, his knee snapping up towards the approaching youth's masked face as his arms dropped low, attempting to grab at the shoulder-fabric of their clothes.

Of course the blond man met his counter easily. Fern could feel his irritation flare—but he should’ve known better. Sparring was not his best skill. He was much more suited to the getting away bit.[break][break]

A knee collided with his mask, and by consequence his face. The impact drove the hard fiber of the disguise up and against said face, and Fern couldn’t bite down the guttural howl that slipped through his grit teeth as the bones in his nose crunched from the force. He might’ve bitten his tongue as well.[break][break]

Mask now twisted and obscuring his vision (which was bleary now anyway,) he scrabbled for frantic purchase, clawing as his opposite yanked the fabric of his jacket. It felt a bit like he was a kitten being grabbed up by the scruff, but rather than being carried off, there was a distinct sense that this would come to no good end.[break][break]

Ergo he thrashed harder despite the ringing in his head. Kicking out in an uncoordinated attempt to drive the toe of his boot into some sort of soft spot.

Uncoordinated swings slapped against Gwyar's stomach, hips, and indeed, crotch as the man lifted the younger man up.

Muscle, bone, loin guard— it wasn't looking good for the rocket, and Gwyar was not enjoying even a second of it.

Normally, crunching bone was a relieving, if not particularly enjoyable sensation, if only because it brought a confrontation one step closer to its end.

Gwyar did not particularly enjoy fighting people much smaller and less experienced than him, however. Being gifted with a large size was helpful, but his conscience couldn't help but rear in its ugly head in circumstances such as this.

God, this young man would really have done him a favor if he just stayed down and didn't get up from his next blow.

"Please... Just stay down." Gwyar said softly as he suddenly spun the young man around, before suddenly wrapping his arms around his neck, clamping around it and beginning to squeeze.

The chokehold's countdown began.

A frustrated noise rumbled in the back of Fern’s throat the longer he struggled to no avail. The man seemed unperturbed by his weak kicking and clawing– which was only naturally for the lack of actual power behind the movement.[break][break]

He should’ve thought to work with the knives hidden away in his jacket. Why was he so combat stupid?[break][break]

Oh right, because this was Marza Volchitsa’s strong suit, not his. His haunter wasn’t even coming to his aid. Where had she gone? Probably thought he wasn’t worth the trouble–weakling that he was.[break][break]

The inside of his mouth felt thick and tasted overwhelmingly of copper. When he spat, it was more blood than spit. He couldn’t keep up with the flow of movement, though, and before he knew it, the world was tilting and spinning around him as he was readjusted with ease.[break][break]

That feral animal thrash began again as he felt the pressure cut the air from his windpipe. He wanted to sink his teeth into the man’s arm, but he couldn’t get the angle right. Couldn’t tilt his chin down. His hands lifted instead, fingers tearing at his arms, and then sinking in when there was no effect.[break][break]

Please…Just stay down.[break][break]

The request earned an angry, but wordless wheeze from Fern. One last effort to worm free, but his hold was strong, and bright-rimmed bursts of darkness began to pock and blur his vision from the diminishing circulation. The white-knuckle curl of his fingers in the other’s sleeve finally slackened.

Gwyar resisted the urge to so much as lax his grip on the other as they struggled, loudly, savagely, viciously, against him, kicking and scratching and, he suspected if they could, biting and screaming as well.

But all humans require oxygen. It was only a matter of time.

13... 14... 15.

It took 10 to 20 seconds of a well applied chokehold for a victim to pass out. Gwyar liked to stay in the safe range of around 15 if he wanted/needed them alive, and somewhere around a couple of minutes if he wanted them dead.

Still, he had to be careful if he wanted this person to stay unconscious; if he released him too immediately, he would snap awake in about eight seconds.

Looking around, the man was careful as he dragged the unconscious body off the beaten path. So long as nobody found him, league or rocket, they should both be fine...

But for good measure, he slapped a pair of handcuffs onto his wrists before leaving him on his side behind some bushes and tombstones.

"... His breathing sounds... about as well as one could expect." Considering his nose might be broken... but his chest seemed to be filling up fine, sooo...

He turned on his heel and faced towards the peak.

Nothing left in his way.

"Best not to keep anyone waiting."
