annalise ascends along the mountainside atop her altaria, covering ground much quicker than her earlier, cumbersome, disrupted attempt at climbing the stairs. she can see flashes of conflict in the fog below, glowing with light as attacks ripple through it. occasionally, spots of fog are chased away, allowing her a glimpse of a battle.[break][break]
but it's the silhouette moving up the staircase that draws her attention, moving unimpeded toward the peak. she urges her altaria lower to the ground, just enough for her to make out the unfamiliarity.

she slips a ball from her belt and tosses it. her volcarona barely finishes materializing before she fires a string shot at the unknown figure.

annalise henderson makes the mistake of calling out to Rocket's underboss, perhaps mistaking him for a much less threatening presence. He turns, and in a swirl of SHADOW MIASMA manages to dodge out of her Volcarona's STRING SHOT. His eyes narrow.[break][break]

He'd toyed too long with PENELOPE LIVY; he won't make that same mistake twice.[break][break]

In a swirl of the same miasma expelled by her vessel, SHADOW LUGIA emerges from a Beast Ball of her own volition. A single flap of broad purple wings rends the skies and sets them to weeping, RAIN sluicing from darkening clouds. Her cry echoes challenge.[break][break]

the fog darkens unnaturally around the silhouette, obscuring them from view, and her volcarona's string shot disappears into the nothingness. annalise has the sinking feeling that, despite hoping against hope that one of these dogged rocket associates she runs into might consider immediate surrender, this will come down to another fight.[break][break] a raindrop lands on her hand, then another on her head, precipitating the downpour that begins to come down a beat later. then, as though back-to-back fighting isn't hard enough on the head ranger, a determined cry carries across rain-wrought air and strikes straight at her morale. [break][break] it's Cillian Quinn ! [break][break]
her heart feels like a fist pounding against her ribs. he offers her the chance to stand aside, to avoid this conflict completely — but she doesn't trust an easy out from someone like him. [break][break]
the meteor looming overhead is already plenty enough persuasion to stand her ground. she just has to buy her teammates time up ahead, she thinks, so they can be the united force that stops gavin from taking the primal crystal.

her response comes in the form of her volcarona stirring to action once more. her wings beat hard against the fog around her, whipping up a hurricane. it swallows fog and debris up into its column as it moves towards the direction she'd last seen gavin.

Rain soaks his skin anew, plastering blond hair against his forehead, and Gavin relishes in the storm. Perhaps it's his connection to Lugia or perhaps it's all in his head, but the mere presence of such awful weather invigorates him.[break][break]

That weather turns violent as HURRICANE winds begin to stir, but he is unperturbed. Lugia can cause storms as easily as she might calm them, and with a few beats of her mighty wings that HURRICANE would turn on its user.[break][break]

A fight, then. So be it.[break][break]

He has dreaded a return to war, yet Gavin cannot deny the electricity that lances through his veins in the form of adrenaline. It is not joy he feels but power, an addicting high from which he can't escape. This is not the path he'd have chosen for himself but there is no denying its hold on him as he steps back into a skin he'd once thought shed.

with an ease that befits a deity, the hurricane changes its path back towards annalise and her volcarona. the realization comes as a thrill of anxiety up through her sternum as a dead tree branch launches past her and her altaria.[break][break]oh shit—

it's a hastily yelled command over the steady hiss of rain and howling winds. she paws at wet strands of hair as they're blown into her face, but it comes to no avail. further below, her volcarona tries to dodge the worst of it, but the harsh winds and loose debris cause her to wobble unsteadily along her flight path.

annalise needs the pep talk more than her volcarona. a heat wave is conjured up with the flapping of wet wings, sending scorching air towards Cillian Quinn 's lugia. rain turns to hissing steam that trails in the wake of the weakened attack. [break][break]

So when Lugia does not swerve away from the oncoming HEAT WAVE, he does not question her. Weakened by the downpour, the heat singes her wings and causes her pain.[break][break]

It does not cause her to falter.[break][break]

The air around the Volcarona begins to swirl. Instead of another hurricane, this time the deluge forms into a vortex of water, a WHIRLPOOL boosted by the storm's power.[break][break]

Gavin, meanwhile, begins to advance on Annalise herself, his intent concealed by the swirling miasma that turns his figure into a smoky silhouette. Cool metal kisses his palm, the soft flick of an extended blade buried by the crack of thunder. His heart thumps hard in his chest.[break][break]

If he gets close enough, he'd lunge for her throat.[break][break]

(Even if he cannot kill her, it might distract, force her to turn her focus from the battle.)

the rain and hurricane-force winds force annalise's altaria to land. she dismounts, hand pressed to flattened bangs and brow to shield her eyes from the downpour. the heat wave leaves a ring of scorch-marked earth around the volcarona as it ripples around her. to annalise's surprise, lugia doesn't move out of the attack's path, taking burning hot air straight to the wings. [break][break]
it feels like she's being toyed with. being given a crumb of confidence to lure her into making a mistake.
[break][break]
water begins to swirl around her volcarona, but her attention becomes split as purple miasma poisons the mist around her. her stomach twists with primal dread just before the whirlpool bursts from the ground and Cillian Quinn bursts from the fog. [break][break]
annalise stumbles away with a yelp, raising her arms up to protect herself. the motion of his hand is so quick that she doesn't register the cold bite of steel against her skin, only the warmth that follows. she continues to try and retreat out of arm's length, wide-eyed and breathing hard.

her altaria launches herself at Cillian Quinn with a cry, wings snapping wetly as she tries to rake her talons across any part of him she can reach.
[break][break]
the distraction gives annalise a moment to look down at herself. a wave of lightheadedness washes over her as she notices the dark stain blossoming across her already-wet ranger uniform.

i'm bleeding.
[break][break]
her brain supplies the observation numbly, panic staunched by shock and adrenaline.

She reacts quicker than he expects. Not fast enough to avoid the bite of his blade, but enough that he doesn't hit anything vital. He readjusts his grip on the knife, feral snarl on his lips, ready to try again—[break][break]

Lugia's SPRINGTIDE STORM rips across the battlefield in a violent swirl of wind and fairy dust, driving the breath from him as as it knocks him out of the Altaria's reach. He loses his footing on the muddy mountainside and has to catch himself against an old tombstone, breathing hard and fast. The attack is all-encompassing, as painful to the shadow's avatar as it would be to Annalise but not so devastating as it would be to the Altaria, whose typing put her at a disadvantage.[break][break]

Gavin knows the hot slip of blood against skin, registers the fact that he's bleeding even as adrenaline numbs him to pain. The talons had caught his forearm where he'd instinctively shielded his face, long but shallow thanks to Lugia's quick intervention. Her voice cracks like thunder through his mind, sharp and powerful.[break][break]

FOOLISH.[break][break]

The Guardian of the Seas lands next to her avatar with a force that makes the ground shake, shading him with her violet wings.[break][break]

Skies rumble in warning, but will they heed it?

annalise tries to stumble away from the springtide storm, but the fairy winds pick her up and toss her into the dirt. she lands on her side with a grunt, air stolen from her lungs, and rolls to a stop on her back. "fuck," is all she can manage to get out, breathless.

she puts a hand to her chest and feels her heartbeat beneath her fingertips. experimentally, she lifts her hand and watches the red dye on her fingers mix with the rain and run pink streams down through the creases of her palm. she's alive, at least, which means she has to keep going. [break][break]
then the ground rumbles beneath her, prompting her to push herself upright with what little adrenaline-powered strength remains. lugia cuts an impressive (and terrifying) figure as she stands over her avatar, guarding him from annalise and the shambles of her team. [break][break]
and those shambles come to her side, both worse for wear. her volcarona had used quiver dance to skirt the springtide storm, but the other attacks had left her with visible damage. her altaria hops beside her with a determined cry, wounded by the springtide storm. [break][break]
annalise knows cotton candy would die for her, here and now, but she needs her to focus her energy elsewhere. drawing this battle out any longer will kill all three of them, so it's time to call a retreat back to illeana reyes to recover. or find Greyson Connors , she thinks, wishful, before casting the idea aside. she doesn't want him to see her like this. [break][break]

"cotton candy," annalise whispers, trembling from cold rain and blood loss. "to illeana."

another hurricane is whipped up in Cillian Quinn and lugia's path, but it's a diversion so annalise can slip herself over her altaria's back. with a rough, hobbling takeoff, the dragon-type gets them off the ground and starts flying away. volcarona starts to flit off after them. [break][break]
