Andrea sat alone inside a spacious locker room, clutching a white envelope in her hands; her official endorsement from the League for her voluntary service in the 99943 METENO raid. As far as she could tell, that endorsement didn't come with any special boons. It was nothing like a medal; just a signed piece of paper essentially saying 'thank you'.

Still, it meant that the League considered her good enough to summon her to one of Ever Grande's many battle arenas, where she would partake in an exhibition match against a mystery opponent. Said match would be televised live across all of Hoenn; a frivolous show for the masses to promote how great and righteous the League was, as if the dahlia goode administration hadn't plotted Sea Hoenn's genocide a couple months prior.

"I wonder who we'll be facing, Chomper..." The dragon-costumed girl wistfully mused, while petting her shiny Hydreigon's dark mane. Who knew, perhaps her mystery opponent would drop by to introduce themselves before their match started. There was plenty of time left before they were to make it to the stage for the main event.

Meanwhile on the other side of the arena, just before the entire thing began—

With the second voice ‘absent’ from his consciousness, he knew that the other Pokémon had asked for time to recover from that disaster—however, however—

It had been several weeks already and there was no sign. He knew how… ‘hands-off’ the Mirage was, and so decided to leave the Shoal Cave alone, for now.

But even then he was getting worried about how long it was taking for the other to contact him again. Huh.

Several weeks had passed since… since then. Since the time the meteor almost beaned the region and sent them into Armageddon.

(Thank fuck that Rayquaza, wanderer of the heavens, had stopped it, but still.)

An exhibition match against a mystery opponent, so he figured—why not come out with one of the best—his most-known non-legendary companion.

Too soon, the speakers overhead grated, whirring and clicking before coming to life and crackling with feedback that lasted all of 0.5 seconds before a gravelly voice announced the ‘next match’ of the day…

Lost as she was in her own thoughts, Andrea lost track of time. Minutes flew by, and soon, she was ushered to the arena by a nameless League employee. "Looks like this it it... Are you ready, Chomper?" The girl asked her Hydreigon, who responded with an affirmative snarl. He was always ready for a fight!

"Introducing first, the pride of Hoenn's Rangers, LAURENCE-E-E-E-E-E ANDERSON!!"

Loud cheers permeated the jam-packed stadium as the deep-voiced announcer howled each contestant's name.

"And his opponent, from Fallarbor Town, ANDREA-A-A-A-A-A VANEAU!!"

"Mr. Lars?!" The young PokéManiac blurted out, her eyes gradually adjusting to the dazzling spotlights cast over the massive arena. "Guess you'll be our opponent, huh?" She redundantly observed, rubbing the back of her head in a sheepish manner. Chomper let out a spirited roar, like he had been waiting for this moment his entire life.

“I hate it when people find out what my real name is.”

He cringed as the feedback squealed temporarily after the loud, raucous announcer got their shit together and he walked out onto the arena and—

“Oho.”

The look on his face changed to the same ol’ chipper knowing smirk.

“I see Chomper’s ready.”

With one click, the battered Heavy Ball spun to full-size before the hulking, shining silver beast appeared on his side of the arena. The grating noise that escaped Ro the Metagross was one for the ages, too.

“And he’s ready too. Let’s go!”

At the sight of the familiar, silver Metagross, all three of Chomper's faces lit up, looking even more excited than before. The prospect of rematching his rival while both of them were at full power got the Hydreigon all Worked Up and raring to go.

"He sure is!" Andrea remarked, grinning widely. "By the way, thanks for saving me back at METENO. However, Chomper and I are gonna hold nothing back! We'll go all out!" The draconic cosplayer boasted, getting the audience amped up as well.

“No big deal,” he hummed, waving his right hand in a nonchalant way. The way that the Metagross was raring to go was—clearly evident; if he could pick up on electricity crackling in the air was palpable.

At the same time the three heads roared, the Metagross merely ‘grinned’ (if that was even a thing) before merely relaxing his legs—before a slight pinging noise—at least one Lars would recognize, at least—would cue him in that the shining silver beast had already used Agility and was getting ready to charge forward.

“Since you mentioned that—then I’ll do the same, no holding back at all,” he continued with this mysterious grin on his face.

Now it was just the waiting game of who would approach first—and since Hydreigon were part-Dark, that meant all of the Metagross’s Psychic-type moves were off the table… for now.

By this point, the young PokéManiac had witnessed Ro's battle capabilities enough times, and knew the Steel/Psychic type's weaknesses like the back of her hand. Chomper's own movepool hadn't changed drastically since their last bout, so the first move should come as no surprise...

"Chomper, use Crunch!" The three-headed dragon lunged at the seemingly idle Metagross, attempting to gnaw on the big hunk of metal with his ravenous jaws.

Getting bitten by three heads wouldn’t be too much, because that’s what Metagross were-ridiculous tank-like monsters.

All Ro needed to wait for was for Chomper to get close enough, and take the hit, before—

The Metagross needed no command—as it braced himself before swinging up one of his fore arms in a slugging Meteor Mash move, intent on knocking the Hydreigon away.

Because even if he didn’t flinch that much, those fangs were fucking sharp!

Ro showed Chomper why he was the strongest asset in Lars' team (broken legendaries notwithstanding), blindsiding the advancing dragon with a powerful Meteor Mash. Although winded by the attack, Chomper stubbornly pushed forward, intent on landing a Crunch one way or the other.

"He's gotta have a weak point! Just keep attacking!" Great minds thought alike, because attacking was what Chomper did best. Before his trainer had even issued an order, the shiny Hydreigon coated his dreaded jaws in flames, attacking his fellow pseudo-legendary with a Fire Fang.

Lars could only grin as he watched the madness happening from the overhead screens—he knew the Metagross needed no direction at all, as Ro was perfectly capable of thinking for himself—was that how independent the Metagross was?

Never mind if it took the Fire Fang in stride (despite grumbling in protest because fire bad, that hurt) he just needed to approach the Hydreigon again and let loose with a Bullet Punch.

Apparently, Ro’s mantra of hitting shit was, ‘get up close and then smack it as hard as possible’… which was the case for the Hydreigon because Psychic was off the table, at least for now!

Ro's Bullet Punch had such crushing impact that the entire stadium fell silent, only to erupt in cheers once they saw Chomper still standing after taking the hit. Andrea felt a tinge of concern seeing her companion get beat up this badly in the first few rounds of the match, but she had absolute faith in her prideful brute of a Hydreigon.

Coincidentally, Chomper also thrived in close quarters combat, keeping up momentum by going for another Crunch in hopes of chipping away at the Metagross' high defenses.

Even if the Metagross didn’t look it, he was definitely starting to take on damage—and this time, hoping that the other was ready for what was coming…

The Metagross let out a noise of distress as the fangs were starting to break through the thick, metallic skin causing him to falter—but not for long.

“Time to bring the big guns out,” was all he would say quietly on his side of the arena as he then held out his right hand and flashed the Mega Stone embedded in a ring he frequently wore on his right index finger before he tapped it.

In a few short moments, this would happen…

An explosion of light would erupt from the hulking silver beast’s body as he would transform—into his Mega-evolved form.

And then right out of the gate retaliate with a second Meteor Mash attack, seeing as he was within close range of the Hydreigon that had landed the earlier attack on him.

Thunderous applause followed Ro's dazzling transformation into an eight-legged metal beast, the audience going positively bananas. Even the announcer was so moved by the display, he was practically barking into his mic.

"A spectacular Mega Evolution from the Head Ranger and his ace! The AQUA Initiative does not mess around!"

"Is that his true form...?" Andrea muttered in bewilderment. It finally dawned on her that the Metagross had been holding back all this time. If only her own companion could go Mega too... Alas, there was no such thing as a 'Hydreigonite'.

Chomper tried to swerve out of the way, but was still grazed by those Tough Claws, which left distinct marks on the dragon's body. The Brutal Pokémon roared in pain, finally forced to gain some distance from his rival.

"Hit him with everything you've got, Chomper! Draco Meteor!" At his trainer's behest, the three-headed dragon summoned a rain of flaming meteorites from the sky to devastate the entire arena with extreme prejudice. Thank Arceus this was an open-air stadium!

He knew that they were on a timer—he could only maintain the transformation for so long without overexerting himself.

This—this was going to be a risky maneuver, but what else could they do at this point in time?!

“Ro, release!” was what he would say next—he was allowing the shining silver beast to use the other two moves that were ‘locked away’ due to the slight type disadvantage.

And not a moment too soon! The first whistling noise was the warning they had, before the object impacted the arena grounds.

A grating squeal similar to dial-up noises came from the hulking beast’s maw afterward. Rather than use the next move offensively, it was more—

A burst of Telekinetic energy came rippling into existence; while it would stave off most of the incoming damage, there would still be hits here and there.

Lars noticed that Ro’s legs were digging into the arena floor—a sign they had to end this, and soon!
