If given the chance, Penelope would've been far from the club. Specifically, back at home, curled up beside CIAN MAHER with maybe a book or watching some random ass movie on demand. But alas, there was no avoiding the fated night out, as her old friend group lit up her phone for an entire week to push her out from her whole.

Her tongue clicked against the back of her tongue. It'd been a few hours since they've arrived, and while her friends were out on the casino floor, guzzling down another round of drinks, Penelope had found a second of escape near the club's entrance. Back pressed up against one of the building's pillars, she let out a heavy breath.

"'eyyy! it's councilwoman!"

kyle's words were slurred. he comes out of the bar, face red from the obvious reason. he keeps his hands on his jacket's pockets as he greets her. although his stance still appeared stable, the expression he has differs greatly from the one he shows in front of others.

filters were off. though kyle was already too lax on a usual day, party kyle was on another level.

"you don't seem the type to go to bars? what happened?" he chuckles. "you here to experience life as a fuckboy as per told by the self-proclaimed hoenn hotshot CIAN MAHER? he seems like the type to frequent bars in his heyday."

it just seemed to be the perfect time to throw down the teasing. hopefully she isn't as cold as ice cream this night.

Before she could react, the champion himself had emerged from the bar, tongue loosened tenfolds. At least he could still walk straight, she thought, because wouldn't be much use as someone's temporary cane tonight.

Laughing, she returned his greeting with a wave. No point in formalities when one was already halfway to blacking out.

"Nah, more like, some friends dragged me out and I couldn't say no," she shrugged, jutting her thumb back toward the casino's entrance. Even from where they stood, the buzzing sound of slots being spun and millions being won was hard to ignore. [Break][break]

"hmm, maybe." he looks back at the inside of the bar, finding no one else he recognizes inside. "i think they already left without realizing i'm still here."

he's in the same boat as penelope that he got dragged. it wasn't his thing to be in loud, crowded places as one of the most introverted guys there is, but friends are friends.

kyle starts to look around, trying to find penelope's as she has mentioned being with them. there weren't any other person he recognized, however, assuming that all her so-called 'friends' are just colleagues from work. if they were, he'd know of their faces at least.

"well? where are your friends at? did they leave you as well?"

he wouldn't be the only one if they did, and that's what kyle was banking on right now.

his shoulders raise, ready to laugh, only to be stifled by a bite of the lip. the chuckles were muffled as they were, but there's little effect on how this hid his laughter for the councilwoman's situation.

"ah, you're one of my own people. welcome, welcome. didn't think an ex-journalist slash councilwoman would fit the role of being the third friend who walks behind the others in a sidewalk."

the only difference is that kyle does it voluntarily because he doesn't want to talk much. it's also a popular trope from movies and other flicks directed towards teenagers.

"whaddya say about lookin' for them inside? the way you're looking back makes me think they're still there. you're not ditching them just because they ditched you, right?"

Penelope shrugged off his obviously muffled spit of laughter. Truth be told, she wasn't having the most fun with the group anyways. They were rowdy and several shots deeper than her -- a combination better suited for a younger, more laid-back version of herself.

"Ah, y'know, it happens to the best of us," she sighed. No point in fretting over spilt milk. Pulling her hair back into low hanging bun, her eyes kept themselves fixated on him, listening intently. "Nah fuck it. They're probably just getting another bottle for the group."

She glanced back over to the other room. There, hidden behind the grandiose water fountain, another room lay with more slot machines and tables for card games.

another bout of stifled laughter comes at penelope's own evaluation of her luck. she could've met anyone else more fitting for the venue, but she had the luck of drawing kyle from the lots.

"haha, i can see that." it's an automated response. "and i got enough money to burn from what i saved up from holiday sales."

his library was filled up to the brim with games with only about single digit hours of playtime. while aqua gives him enough free time as per the contract, it's a separate work contract as the region's champion that burns through his time.

he does earn more than what he can spend.

kyle takes a step back, and his hand motions for the room. "ladies first."

To his continuous laughter, she rolled her eyes, chuckling a bit herself.

Taking the lead, she led them down the vibrant red-carpeted casino floor. To their left, slot machines lay in intricate rows, with plumes of smoke hovering just above each machine. To their right, the card games were set up: blackjack, poker, texas hold em, and so on.

It was an easy game; nearly 50/50 odds to play in their favor. It made for an easy game to ease into. Taking the middle seat out of three emptied spots along the corner of the table, Penelope made herself at home, resting her ankles on the wooden trimming of the tabletop.

ah, blackjack.

memories come back to him of his friends betting on each other back in high school. it would be something as inconsequential as being asked to buy something from the grocery store, or a stupid dare like grabbing a wild poochyena with their bare hands.

he'd win most of the time though, since counting techniques weren't exactly trackable as a means of playing the odds.

"why not?" he answers, his pitch a bit higher than normal due to him being tipsy. "let's get some of their drinks first though. they were bragging about it, so why not?"

he flags a waiter, asking for the ever so popular gravedigger cocktail.

"i wish we'd get more long breaks like this for next year," he whines all of a sudden. "i'm looking forward for more days off, as long as none of the crazy shit happens every two or three months."

Maybe a bit too heavy for the champion who'd already been tripping over himself, but alas, Penelope was not about to say anything. Rather, she accepted the offered drink with an appreciative smile, placing it in one of the many cupholders set out beside her.

The promising thought loomed over her. With how hellish everything felt lately, the idea of reprieve felt almost too good to be true.

Not that it was even remotely possible -- not in Hoenn, at least.

"I'm with you there," she sighed, "It would be nice to have a bit more time for ourselves this year."

The dull sound of cards shuffling droned on in the background. The dealer was preparing the firsthand, and with it, the start of the game. Shifting in her seat, Penelope repositioned herself so that her arms were no longer resting on top the table's ledges, as she wanted to grant room for her cards to easily slide out in front of her.

"For me, hmm, I'm just looking forward to working with everyone without the tension of region-ending meteor along the horizon. It was kinda a major buzz kill back then."

there was a lot of thinking done, but the influence of alcohol has gotten kyle to overthink of too much numbers for his usual gambit. he ends up losing the round.

kyle slaps his face as he continues to bet for another round.

"that's impossible," he responds to her lightheartedly. "if it's not that, it's aqua stuff or crime stats. if not, then it's one-upping each other. there's no end to it, sorry."

he takes another sip of his drink.

"then again, that's just me. i'm kind of a glass-half-empty kind of guy." kyle snickers. "maybe it's better if you had this topic with other people," he jests.

Where Kyle loses, Penelope succeeds, winning the first hand with ease. The buzz of alcohol still hadn't corrupted her thought process. Not fully, at least.

he pauses.
