here they were again, on another route, intent to find the next on the list: a good flying-type—other than pelipper.[break][break]
there was nothing wrong with pelipper, necessarily, except that maisy’s was a little unpredictable at times. back home in kanto, when she’d trained at the gym, the bird had stayed behind on the docks for a reason. this was precisely why it was still alive.[break][break]
as per fairly typical fashion, it waddled along next to maisy, beak full with its stowed away pawmi companion. they’d found a trail through the snow, packed down so the bird didn’t sink into it and freeze.[break][break]
”aren’t your feet cold?” maisy asked, figuring the alternative of flying might’ve been more comfortable.

willow had not done any training since her battle with bo. well, save for the queen bee incident, but she had mostly relied on Greyson Connors for everything, notably ensuring they escaped with their lives. the complete lack of confidence is what has forced her to take a day off every week to gain said confidence.

but it's not that incident alone. she's slowly realizing just how dangerous a place her home has become - for her, for roman, and for everyone else she cares about. she's seen too many of them battered and beaten after spending their days like superheroes.

what if she's ever put in a position where she could have done something? if only she knew how.

"oh." she startles when elisabet chitters next to her, pointing with a delicate leaven arm. "hi there. sorry, i wasn't paying attention. nearly ran into you."

she was watching her step over a bunch of winding roots when she nearly ran into willow.[break][break]
”hey! sorry, no worries!” maisy smiled, as the flop of pelipper feet stopped at her heel. the bird’s beak split open a crack to reveal two pawmi eyes peering upwards curiously.[break][break]
”oh, is that a leavanny? i’ve never seen one in person before…”[break][break]
she beamed down at elisabet, holding a friendly hand up in greeting. this type of pokémon hadn’t been a particularly common sight in kanto, and she tended to stick to areas of lilycove where water and rock-types were the most usual.

elisabet eyes the newcomer curiously and then straightens her back when maisy expresses a certain awestruck interest in her. willow smiles, nodding to her as she crouches down to inspect the pair of eyes peeking up at her from the pelipper's oversized beak.

"this is elisabet. raised her from a sewaddle with my dad." elisabet's antennae shiver, making a rattling sound of prideful confirmation.

"did you know your pelipper found a friend?" she asks.

”that’s awesome. nice to meet you elisabet.”[break][break]
she looked down as willow crouched, hands going to her hips casually as she explained, ”frank likes to carry around pawmi, and pawmi likes to hide and spy on everyone. you’d think the fur wouldn’t be very comfortable, but they both seem pretty content with the arrangement.”[break][break]
the pawmi sank down lower into the pelipper’s beak, though still peering out.[break][break]
”she saw you already. you can come out and say hello.”[break][break]
the beak opened wider again, and the rodent poked its head out, ears and all. curious eyes watched willow, while frank stared blankly up at the clouds.

"pawmi?" willow repeats. it could be a nickname for all she knew, but it doesn't seem like one, given the pelipper's name is frank. lo and behold, she has no idea what the little creature is when frank opens his mouth and reveals it.

willow coos and smiles down at the little rodent. "you're so cute. don't worry, sweet thing. i won't hurt you." tilting her head, she looks up at maisy: "it's not hoenn native, right?"

"oh, don't even remind me," she says with a sigh, wiggling her fingers out in front of the little rodent. it watches them, transfixed, and gives them a couple of playful bats. she withdraws just quick enough to avoid the tiny sparks of electricity popping from its excited cheeks.

"they say ignorance is bliss and i've taken it to heart these past couple of months." she still watches the local news and tries to keep tabs on what's going on, but loosely. she went through a brief stint of reading endless news articles and social media posts and all it did was exhaust her with worry over bo and lance and ollie.

the rifts were the newest phenomenon to cause trouble to the region; however, for now, tragedy had not yet struck from them—except according to wildlife experts, who were concerned that the new species might wreak havoc on ecosystems. and actually, maybe that was grounds for real concern. maybe that was tragic.[break][break]

for now, maisy considered it not the end of the world. they were still alive and kicking.[break][break]

”i totally get that… but hey! at least we lived through the meteor, right?” she smiled reassuringly. ”nothing we can do but try our best to be ready for what comes next.”[break][break]

and what came at that moment was the attack of a vespiqueen. ”oh, look out!” maisy grabbed up the pawmi from the mouth of the pelipper and promptly chucked him into the air, as though he himself were a pokeball. cheeks already activated from showing off for willow, a strong thunder shock exploded towards the bug, grounding it with paralysis.[break][break]

she looked back over. ”i’m not taking this one, if you want it?” but many people weren’t fond of bug-types.
