Rook had begun to rely a lot on these times together, just him and Lam against the world. It was nice, sometimes quiet and sometimes filled with laughter and teasing. In truth, Rook wasn't sure where he'd be in life if not for Lam by his side. Nowhere good, at least.

Today was his chosen pick of the day. Sure, it wouldn't like have any birds for the other to collect, but Lam had... a lot of birds so maybe it was for the best. "How's your jacket, is it keeping you warm?" He'd gotten the jacket on sale, but it seemed to be a fairly good one. He wished he could afford better, but that was the plan right? One day, they'd be big.

"I have a good feeling!" Not that, that meant anything in the long run, but he was learning to trust himself.

"Yeah! It is," he replied, smiling before he leaned against Rook for a moment. Still behaving every bit like a burrowing creature, both out of affection and a need for more warmth. He didn't blame Noodle for refusing to come with them today. He couldn't get the shinx out of his little cat house for anything.[break][break]

"If you do, I do." Pulling away as they moved onward down the path, Lam kept his eyes peeled for whatever might be interesting. The little yipping sound came first, and then a really round, yellow, and friend-shaped blur followed.[break][break]

His hand shot out, clutching at Rook's arm. "Ohmygod, Rook. Look." His other hand pointed, and he rocked up onto his toes in a slightly excited bounce. His first instinct was to whistle, then edge closer to the little yipper. It didn't seemed to be skittish in the least, scampering up with a lolling tongue and allowing Lam to pick it up with both hands and hold it out toward his boyfriend.][break][break]

It wasn't really...furry, but still soft and squishy. Green eyes wide, he looked at Rook with uninhibited delight. "Rook, Rook. It's BREAD DOG???"

"Ohmygod, Rook. Look."

"Oh wow, he's perfect!" Rook practically squealed, running in the direction opposite of whatever it was that Lam was currently looking at. Instead, he was hyper-focused on the gelatinous purple blob of unknown substance that was slipping through the undergrowth. A Swalot. He'd been looking for one for quite some time now.

"Hey there little guy!" Rook said excitedly as the pokemon looked up at him with a puckered expression of intrigue. Then it burped, very stinky. Possibly even toxic. "Oh wow, got a stomach ache? I know how that feels. I should have something at home for that if you want." He very much doubted that it would need it, but he offered regardless. "Wanna be my friend?"

“She’s so cute and squishable and- huh?” Lam shifted as Rook blew right by him and the little bread dog, who was very happy to be coddled. “Swalots aren’t anything new,” he added in confusion. The fidough was. He’d seen tons and tons of swalots before.[break][break]

But Rook seemed delighted, so who was he to rain on that. He watched his boyfriend chatter excitedly at the violet, blobby Pokémon, and a fond smile slipped over his face. Even if he could smell the swalot’s belch from over there and it kinda really made his nose wrinkle. A flash of pink caught the corner of his eye and Lam turned again.[break][break]

A clefairy?[break][break]

“Rook, I think ever since you gave me Bubblegum, all the clefairy want to come home with me.” He laughed a little, as it tried to climb his pant leg to be held like the fidough. “Am I a clefairy magnet now?”

"Don't you listen to him, you're unique and I love you." He said, with a beaming smile at the newly acquired Swalot. He knew that lam logan didn't exactly share his taste in the more... bizarre types, but that was okay. He at least accepted him for it and didn't think him too weird for his interests. That meant more to Rook than anything.

Pocketing the newly-filled pokeball, he was quickly confronted by yet another intriguing pokemon, a spiritomb. At least this outing seemed to be more geared towards his interests. Maybe it was a little selfish, he loved Lam's love for birds, but he did not love birds himself.

"Wow, Lam! This one is really cool." He said. "Hi there, I'd shake your hand if you had any. You can be my friend too."

“You’re really finding the good stuff today, babe,” he remarked once the clefairy was secured in a pokeball and picked up. A dustox fluttered in, intent on dusting them all with poison powder. Disinterested in catching it, he gave Ziti the chance to chase the bug off— body cloaked in fire, the talonflame hurtled toward it with a FLAME CHARGE that probably singed the poor thing’s powdery wings. Oh well.[break][break]

And really, Lam didn’t mind not catching as much this go-round if it meant Rook had the better luck. He knew his partner humored his birds, and Lam had been insanely lucky the last time they were out. So it was sorta sweet to see Rook waltzing up to every interesting Pokémon he liked and trying to befriend it. “Hey Rook, what about that one?”[break][break]

Pointing, he tried to direct the other’s attention to a surly looking stunky hovering by a rotted tree stump and giving them both the stink eye.

Having successfully captured and pocketed the Spiritomb, his attention was pulled away by his boyfriend to the next critter to happen upon them. Things were really looking up though, weren’t they? Maybe Lam was right about this whole trainer thing?

“Wow I love him!” The stunky didn’t seem to love them though, by the way it was looking at them. Probably not a great idea to waltz up to it and try befriending it. He wasn’t sure how he felt about the idea of capturing pokemon that way, but surely they could make friends after the fact, right? He’d never really had to do that before. All of his current pokemon had been in some kind of need or immediately friendly with him.

He released Rosie from her ball and she meandered towards the foreign pokemon in the odd, disjointed way that she did. “Play rough.” She sprung forward, throwing the stunky off before he tossed a pokeball to capture. “Not sure it feels right this way, but…”

A spinarak scuttled down the trunk of a tree and Ziti darted at it, FLAME CHARGE singeing the poor little bug before it can reach the ground or climb back into the branches. Lam hummed the itsy bitsy spider idly to himself as he aimed a pokeball at it.[break][break]

His attention turned back toward a Rook and his apparent ethical dilemma. “Don’t worry, Rookidee. It gets easier, just gotta get used to it.” Wandering over to his boyfriend, Lam gave him a peck on the cheek. “Sometimes it’s safer, anyway. That stunky looked pretty surly. You’ll have plenty of time to make it warm up to you, which I’m sure won’t be hard, given how lovable you are.”[break][break]

Lam offered his hand down for Rosie to swat at in a low-five for a good job as she skittered back over to them, pokeball in tow. He frowned, though, when the pokeball seemed to have weird color splotched on it. Maybe that was why the stunky was so mad? “I think there’s something over there.”[break][break]

As if on cue, big ears and buggy eyes peered over the flat stump.

Lam was ultimately right, of course. When was Lam ever wrong? Except for the times he was maybe wrong but Rook still thought he was right regardless. "Yeah, that makes sense." Trying to befriend wasn't always the best idea and that seemed to be true once again. Especially when he saw the oddest looking pokemon of the bunch. He let out a little gasp. "Oh, Lam... it's perfect."

Truly, he didn't know what it was... Probably a new pokemon like the one Lam had just found. "Okay, I'm gonna catch it." He looked down to Rosie. "Okay, one more time. Play rough!" She dashed out at the unknown pokemon in her funny little way before attacking. Then, he quickly followed it up with another pokeball.
