THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

One step through the rift and he’s already tired of this. Craters? A jungle? There’s no doubt dozens upon dozens of Ultra Beasts lurking all over the place and who knows what other dangers. So, of course, Tam does as Tam does best: he reaches into one of the pockets of his ranger jacket and from it he retrieves a carton of cigarettes. After tapping it against his palm a couple of times, a single pristinely white cylinder is brought to his lips.

”Looks like you’re getting your wish, Jake.” He tells jacob kim after lighting the cigarette. In his place, some would probably be shocked that the excitable cadet hasn’t run off just yet. Tam does no more than take a drag from his cigarette.

A Lycanroc is released from a pokéball, but before Tam can give it any instructions, his attention is drawn towards the jungle up ahead. There, past the smoke he blows out with a breath, past all the trees, rises a familiar tower.

”Huh…” Procyon barks, wagging his tail, and in doing so he successfully distracts the ranger. When he blinks, the tower is no longer there. Had he just imagined it? ”Hmm… Okay… Let’s get moving. We’re just supposed to do some scouting. Nothing crazy.”

two hands hold a phone securely as its camera points to yet one of hoenn's newest attraction for its circus show. arms shake as he struggles to keep his hands steady for a clear picture.

if anything, jake can't contain himself despite the way he behaves himself.

"this is so much better than what i expected, tam," he responds to the ranger captain. "distortions are nice, but nothing feels more like an adventure than a small party exploring the unknown wilds."

those space-time distortions are basically taken care of by civilians anyways. it's a free-for-all, except everyone who chips in holds their weight and leaves nothing for anyone else.

he flashes a smile to john nelson , not wanting to interrupt Tam Fawley 's question, while he gives Orion Lykos a nod. he seemed scary, given that he heard he was once a councilman for hoenn's league. politicians aren't exactly the type of people he can find himself getting close to.

maybe he can try for this trip, but his focus was on something else.

his heart races as he continues to take pictures of the wild. patience can only run as high as he waits for those higher up in the ladder than him to take the lead. he can already see himself racing to look at more views the moment he runs out of scenery to capture.

Where jacob kim is enthralled at the idea of adventure, Orion has been sour since before they'd stepped foot into the wilds. It's not his first experience with dimension-hopping, hence why Tam Fawley had likely requested his presence, and the only way he'd be so thrilled is if it were his last. He fixes the younger man with a withering look.[break][break]

"I'm sure it'll be wonderful," he snaps, in a tone that suggests the opposite, "right up until we get eviscerated by Ultra Beasts."[break][break]

He folds his arms, the dark metal of his left gleaming in the yellow light.[break][break]

"See that?" He jerks his head toward a metal shape jutting from the russet rock. "Celesteela. Reports from Mossdeep and Meteor Falls say they're used by the Megalopolans for mining, and that their Leech Seed can be devastating." He's not talking about the ragner's reports; he'd accessed these files when he'd been on the Council, reading up on Ultra Beasts after fighting on Lilycove's warfront in the Three-Day War. "These are a lot smaller than those reports suggest... young, maybe. Still, I wouldn't go near them."[break][break]

Expelling a sharp breath through his nose, he turns to Tam Fawley in search of direction. Though john nelson's presence has been ignored by the grouchy former councilman, at least he hadn't received a verbal lashing like jacob kim. It was the most he could expect.[break][break]

"Perseus," he indicates the Silvally, who seems agitated as it glowers toward the baby Celesteela, "is a Beast Killer. That's why I brought him along."[break][break]

He'd also brought his Absol, more for emotional support than anything else, and an Illumina Decidueye whose star-patterned wings cast light as she circles above them, scouting.

Most of what John's . . . companions? Most of what his companions say is lost to him as he soaks in exactly where he is and what he's doing. No, he's not even doing that. He looks at his surroundings -- this alien landscape full of odd plants and fetid steam -- but doesn't really see them. He's too busy wondering how he got here.

Of course he knows how he got here. There was some rigmarole with a portal. But how he got here, in a place where the portal was part of his life. That's a bit less clear. He wanted to help the league and just kind of took the first offer there was. How was he supposed to know when they said there were going to be expeditions that they'd be to other universes?

To Ultra Space. Orion -- and holy shit that is Orion Lykos what the fuck has his life become -- nods in the direction of a thing he's only seen in news reports. Reports with casualties and estimated damages attached to them. His blood runs cold and it's hard to keep from shivering.

The only thing that frees him from the spiral of fear, confusion, and raw bafflement is the surprisingly grounded introduction from Tam Fawley. Of course he knows Ranger Fawley. Slateport Captain, dependable. It's almost embarrassing how much comfort he finds in seeing him. In accepting the almost hilariously banal handshake.

"John Nelson," he replies in an attempt at his usual convivial tone that rings hollow, echoes in his head a little, "I didn't know there was a crater until about ten minutes ago."

He does his best not to look panicked as he looks at the more experienced men around him and offers a shaky smile. He even throws a wave to Jacob in between the younger man's frantic picture taking.

"So uh, what's the uh . . . what's the goal here? What can I do to help you guys?"

Tam Fawley is a simple man. He likes it when things are clear-cut, straightforward, and most important of all, utterly normal. The problem is that he’s a simple man living in Hoenn, and that in Hoenn nothing is ever clear-cut, straightforward, or normal. Case in point: the Ultra Crater.

If Tam had a pokémon ability, it would probably be Normalize.

”It’s good to have you, John.” He means it, despite the fact that there’s not even a hint of a smile and no shift in his ever so neutral tone. Honestly, more than anything, Tam is thankful john nelson has a simple and easy-to-remember name, or he’d probably forget it mid-expedition. ”We’re mostly here for recon. Standard stuff. You can help with our supplies, if you want.”

Leave it to Tam to make it sound like they’re stepping into Petalburg Woods and not a whole other dimension filled with monstrous creatures and the possibility of cannibalistic aliens. He follows the order of operations to a T. For once, jacob kim isn’t the most inexperienced person here, so he’s not given the easiest job there is.

But, while Tam is as grounded as can be, Orion Lykos does a wonderful job in reminding the group of the grim reality.

”Just like we could be eviscerated by any pokémon.” The captain counters matter-of-factly, as if in his mind Ultra Beasts were classified right next to any other cantankerous wild pokémon. He does listen to Orion’s explanations, however, and when crouching down a couple of metres away from what looks like a sleeping bamboo shoot, his next comment comes with a pointed look for Jake in particular. ”Hmm… They’re almost cute, but Orion’s right, don’t touch them.”

Standard ranger protocol when encountering with wild pokémon: where there’s something adorable and seemingly harmless, there is likely a parent nearby with protective instinctives that will get you mauled to shreds.

Tam sighs, takes another drag from his cigarette, and stands back up. Dragonspiral Tower looms in the distance, and if he’s here to do recon, of course that is what he intends to check out. The only problem, though? A bamboo forest stands between him and his goal. Thinking, he exhales smoke.

”This way. We might have to cut down some bamboo to make it through, though.”

With that said, he walks.

Orion Lykos's sarcastic message is met with enthusiasm. this is what he signed up for when he moved to hoenn: adventure and thrill that no other trip to any other region can match.

"yes, sir!" he responds with a casual salute.

eyes were round with curiosity when he shows the celesteela. he takes all the information in, like a diligent student on a field trip, as he wishes for a moment of his own to explore the area without reins.

but alas, he's here with a duty.

he wants to run. to jump. to go straight into the wilds. unfortunately, there's a method to the madness of venturing the alien world. he keeps himself contained to the best of is ability, turning to john nelson to make small talk after recognizing anxiety in his voice.

"it's not much, but it's exciting, right? i hope nothing bad happens to us, but you never know."

while he says it in an effort to be friendly, part of him prays for his words to jinx them.

john nelson manages to dodge Orion's infamous ire by virtue of Tam Fawley and jacob kim sharing its burden. Though close with the Captain (far closer than some might even realise), it doesn't save Tam from a withering look when he declares the baby Celesteela as cute.[break][break]

You're impossible, the look suggests, though he won't go as far as to disrespect the Captain on a mission.[break][break]

He also thinks terrorists are attractive, Orion reminds himself. Arceus. What did that suggest about him? Thank goodness there wasn't time to worry about that, with the bamboo forest looming ahead.[break][break]

"Altair." The Absol at his side perks up. "Clear a path."[break][break]

The Disaster Pokemon levels his horn toward the thick bamboo stalks. It glows with bright psychic energy before the white-furred Pokemon lunges with a powerful NIGHT SLASH that cleaves through the forest of bamboo with a satisfying clatter of stalks.[break][break]

Unfortunately, disturbing the bamboo also disturbs what hides within.[break][break]

"WATCH OUT!"[break][break]

The biggest Ariados Orion has ever seen spins its STICKY WEB, clearly with the intent to ensnare the explorers. The Decidueye who'd been circling diligently overhead flares bright with her ILLUMINA STATE as her SPOTLIGHT redirects the arachnid's attention elsewhere.

Supplies, that sounds simple enough. John can't say he's confident in most of the qualities an expedition would call for -- sense of direction, survival instinct, knowledge of nature -- but he is confident that even he couldn't mess up carrying shit around. While the rest of the group discusses strategy he, then, begins to pluck up bags and drape them over his shoulders.

It's while he's doing this that Jacob Kim approaches. John gives him a small smile as he approaches and does his best to put a little pep in his step as he straightens with another bag in tow. The young man is obviously the odd one out of the rangers present (given his sunny disposition) -- not that it seems to bother him -- and John wants to be welcoming.

"Yeah, I guess you could call it exciting," he replies, smile more strained than it was a moment ago, "it's walking a bit of a line for me. If we can keep from any potential 'bad things' maybe it'll fall on the positive side of that line."

And it really is like their little side conversation has jinxed things, because no sooner does John finish agreeing that he's got enough excitement jaunting through this alien environment without it trying to kill him than Orion cries out from the nearby bamboo. The sight of the frankly monstrous Ariados that lunges at him before being distracted by the SPOTLIGHT is enough to refreeze the blood that had been warming in his veins.

"MC!" he more shrieks than shouts, and one of the pokeballs at his hip flares to life. His Zangoose appears in a flash of white light before giving off a shriek of her own. Instinct alerts her to the approaching STICKY WEB and she splits the section of it threatening John and Jacob with an X-SCISSOR.

"Good girl," John breathes, "Support the guy with the metal arm! Follow his pokemon, but not too closely!"

MC is off like a shot, with just enough enthusiasm to prompt him to shout again.

"Be safe!"

Naturally, the look Orion Lykos gives him is met with utter confusion on the captain’s part, sky blue eyes fixing on emerald green ones with an expression that almost seems to say: What?

However, there is no time for the question to actually be asked. Altair cuts down the bamboo before them, and when the Absol does as much, the small group finds itself greeted by a huge Ariados.

”Fucking shit.” Tam has nothing in particular against arachnids. What he does have something against, however, is being suddenly startled – as Orion knows well. Fuck jumpscares, man. Thankfully for him, it’s Orion’s own pokémon along with john nelson that are swift to respond to the Ariados’ attack. The damage is already done, though: he had dropped his cigarette.

”Keep it away from us.” Tam commands his Lycanroc with a heavy sigh, stomping down the potential fire hazard. Procyon barks in response, and obedient as ever, he does as commanded, STONE EDGE rising from the ground to act as a barrier between them and the giant spider.

The only problem?

Unintentionally, the attack hits one of the bamboo shoot pokémon as well. It wails.

Tam feels his whole body tense up, but nothing happens at first. Five seconds pass, and then, a sound overtakes the bamboo forest: like a jet flying by.

Bamboo stalks shake, bend, and fall. Most of those in their vicinity had been cut right over their heads, and although for a second Tam is distracted by sight of golden nuggets and other treasures falling from within these bamboo, the glimmer of something white spinning in the air catches his eye. It’s turning. It’s coming towards them.

He recognizes it from the League’s files.

”KARTANA. RUN!”

Yep, he definitely hates Hoenn sometimes. Bet jacob kim is having the time of his life.

...three, four. it was just enough.

"i got this!"

a giant ariados on one direction. kartana on another. jake steps forward from the back and situates himself in the middle of their group and throws a pokeball directly below him.

"set us an updraft."

its appendages grab each of them, leaving their pokemon below, which jake figures can just be recalled if they want to. tailwind starts to blow from below, lifting the balloon pokemon, alongside its passengers up in the air.

his heart is racing. this was the hoenn experience he signed up for.

Orion merely shakes his head at Tam Fawley; there's no time to get into it, now. This much is proven when the simple act of clearing some bamboo puts them all in mortal danger. That would have been bad enough, but-[break][break]

"KARTANA! RUN!"[break][break]

-apparently bad enough wasn't good enough for Hoenn.[break][break]

"Hate it here," he growls under his breath, turning hard on his heel to dash back toward the others. As jacob kim's Drifblim lifts them skyward, Orion shouts to his Silvally, "PERCY! DEFENSE!"[break][break]

The callout is unnecessary. At the sight of Kartana, the Beast Killer snarls deep in its throat. AERIAL ACE ensures its ability to land a hit against their agile foe, buying time for the rangers to gain some distance.[break][break]

To john nelson, he says a little curtly, "Name's Orion."[break][break]

Sure, the Pokémon wouldn't know that, and John's descriptor made the most sense in the heat of battle, but Orion's still self conscious about his metal limb. He doesn't want that to become a thing.

Things spiral out of control faster than John can properly keep up with. Hoenn trains a person to naturally follow a certain amount of chaos, but apparently the only place crazier than Hoenn is this world branching off of it. Everything registers on a sensory level, but no further.

Crying, shouting, a flash of light, and suddenly John is in the air being hoisted by a Drifblim. The clarification from Orion is lost completely at the sight of MC growing further and further away.

"New plan, girl, back to me!" he shouts, rifling through his pockets while things go to shit around him. MC huffs as if this command is somehow not the best course of action -- as if she can keep up with a 'Beast Killer ' against Kartana or go up against that giant Ariados with more finesse than the Lycanroc already assailing it. They're trying to get better at battling -- but John knows they're nowhere near either of those levels yet.

"Just listen!" he shouts again and MC relents, though not before kicking out and scraping the giant Ariados with a CRUSH CLAW. She runs into range of her pokeball just in time for John to click the button and suck her up in a red capture light, "stupid brat . . ."

After another couple of seconds (spent staring with a mix of worry and wistfulness at the beaten up pokeball in his hand) he perks up and looks to Orion who is similarly lifted by the Drifblim.

"Oh, I know that -- your name. I know it's Orion," he belatedly replies, "MC isn't so good with names, though. She doesn't care about senators and stuff, ya know?"

The faux pas of referring to a man by his disability is lost to John. In his mind a robot arm is a pretty cool addition to any person. Later he will spend a lot of time screaming into a pillow in mortification at this childish perspective and the lack of immediate apology he has to offer.

There is acceptance in the way he sighs; as if suddenly being carried up into the air by a Drifblim in order to escape some murderous origami monster were a perfectly normal occurrence.

"Good idea, Jake." He even praises @jacob, holding onto the spectral arm that had wrapped around him. Tam looks at the group, assessing their condition and only gazing away once sure that Orion Lykos, jacob kim, and john nelson are okay. He doesn't comment on the obvious absence of the supplies that had been given to the latter.

In the distance, he can see his own Lycanroc, growing farther and farther with each passing second. Far out of a Pokéball's range. Good thing Procyon is his usual running partner and that they've done decently with their recall training. "Cy! To me!"

The canine of dusk-coloured coat hears him, ears perking up. With an acknowledging HOWL that soon becomes a growl directed at the hostile wild Pokémon, Procyon retreats, although not without first picking up one of the bamboo's treasures as if this were a new toy to play with. Oh well, at least he's following them, but that leaves one problem...

"We're an easy target up here. We should get back on the ground once we're far enough."

Even now, his gaze searches for the spire.

"sure, boss!"

it's the only response he gives to Tam Fawley when he basically tells him to lower them down. down is where the action is, and if that's where the captain wants them to be, then he has no choice but to follow orders.

he pats his drifblim as he says the word. "phantom force!"

with all four still grasped by the drifblim's appendages, the ghost-type slinks into the shadow, and subsequently, sink back to the ground from gravity. like a turbulent airplane ride, the trip was convenient and quick, albeit nauseating for those unused to it.

they appear back to the ground in another bamboo forest. the drifblim is recalled back to its ball as jake starts to take his bearings back from what felt like vertigo. amid his random pacing, he steps on something metallic on the ground.

"wait, i thought it's soil?"

something underneath them starts to unearth itself. jake tries to remain on his feet, a mouth covering a smile that he cannot possibly show to two people pissed off by the place and a higher up that can write him up for not taking this seriously.

08 ride a launching celesteela unwittingly or on purpose to get to a destination.

🗺️ JACOB KIM's hunger for adrenaline (as an adrenaline junkie) must push the narrative forward in a pivotal way.
