it's been some time since she's come back to meteor falls. her last excursion here still haunts her. though several weeks have passed, it may not be too late to reach out to Talia Celes and thank her, formally, for saving her life. for a lot of things, really.

but no matter. she's here now and the interior is crawling with an influx of newly hatched dragonlings. the mating season for most of the species of draconic pokemon is in the warmer months when their eggs have a better chance of withstanding the cold.

she has every reason to believe the shifting weather patterns and planar distortions have thrown the behavioral rhythms of much of hoenn's wildlife out of whack. normally during this season she would have a team of folks from the estate, her family, out here maintaining the population.

but here she stands alone, save for the flygon beside her, surveying for clutches.

Different reasons cause them to be drawn to Meteor Falls, for while freya morningstar’s concern is dragons, Mars’ own is one particular kind psychic type pokémon and the odd occurrences that have taken place at this cavern because of them. He had ventured deep into the cave system, so far that the ceaseless flow of the rapids could barely be heard, yet what he looked for seemed to elude him yet again.

It’s on his way back that he happens upon the stranger and her Flygon, the Dragapult by his side having alerted him of their presence. Xanthos, being his favourite among his Illumina pokémon, had been in charge of illuminating the path for him, but now the bioluminescent pattern of its dark body pulsates as if to show the dragon’s unease about these strangers.

A hand reaches for the Dragapult’s neck and the glow dims then, yet its gaze remains fixed on the others. Its trainer, on the other hand, seems as calm as ever.

”Hey. Not a lot of people come this far into the cave.” A smile is given with ease, but it’s at that moment that a nearby sound interrupts their encounter. Only then does Xanthos look away from the strangers.

echo's striations make flying quietly impossible, but she's the most lithe of freya's mounts and is able to traverse the underground with ease. so their presence is announced to wild pokemon and spelunkers alike, but she figured she would be too far in the cave to come across the latter. she's heard of the illumina pokemon before, but never has she seen the phenomena afflicting a dragon.

caution is thrown to the wind in lieu of awe as echo flutters down to stand before the strangers.

"not many do," she agrees. she goes to ask after the dragapult, but there's a splash nearby. echo turns, tilting her head as water droplets reverb, bouncing off the outline of two shapes emerging from a pool.

she chirps and freya slides off of her back.

Were the circumstances different, Mars would perhaps recognize her due to her many public accomplishments and her family’s history with the city Team Rocket now oversees, but lighting in caverns is far from the greatest, and the appearance of wild pokémon sure is distracting…

They seem to have ventured into a Greninja’s territory, but as cunning and furtive as the species can often be, the Dragapult’s senses are keen. A SPOTLIGHT soon falls upon the water type, Xanthos’ luminescence making its presence clear. Its fate is marked at that moment, for a click of Mars’ tongue calls for an attack with a simple non-verbal command, and just like that, THUNDER is summoned.

It’s not enough to mess with the integrity of the cavern, but it sure shows the Greninja who’s in charge here.

”Are you here in search of something or just a fan of spelunking?” He asks the stranger out of curiosity when his attention returns to her, a smile still upon his lips.

He’d assume the former, because in his experience, people are always searching.

more impressive than the dragapult itself is the trainer who commands it. the kingdra lingers in the water, watching the four impassively, as though deliberating on whether or not approaching them is worth it. upon the dragapult's show of strength, it decides not and slips back under the surface of the pool.

the thunder emanates and freya grins as they're greeted in return with a myriad of hisses and snarls. the cavern comes to life all at once and echo stands at high alert. her head swivels and she chirps once more, lowering onto her front paws as an axew totters curiously towards them.

"dragon-hunting. the falls aren't usually crawling with fresh hatchlings this time of year, but i think the distortions have thrown breeding cycles out of whack." echo looks back at her and freya nods.

the flygon is quick with her incapacitation. the earth shifts at her command, rolling and coming into points. the field of stalagmites punctures the curious-turned-panicked dragon, rendering it immobile. she throws a ball.

"and yourself?"

There had once been a time when Mars had held no particular appreciation for them, but coincidentally enough, it had been the Dragapult by his side that had changed that for him. Xanthos had hatched from an egg almost a year ago now, and from that very moment, the little Dreepy had imprinted on the banker. Even now, once the Greninja is dealt with and no longer perceiving Freya as a threat, Xanthos nuzzles the hand that pats his head.

“Ah, yeah. I can see how distortions might have had an effect like that.” For how much Mars had studied Space-Time Distortions, he had never considered the fact that they might have such kind of effects on the wildlife. It makes perfect sense, though. Goes to show that perspective and expertise really can make a difference when it comes to understanding every aspect of a situation, no? So, even though he just met her, because of this, freya morningstar earns a certain amount of appreciation.

“I’m looking for Unown.” He admits, never making a secret of his interest in the Symbol Pokémon. “Have you seen any, by any chance?”

Doubtful, considering how elusive they are, but he’ll always ask.

whether she'd expected it or not, it looks like the company she's found will be around for a bit. surprisingly, she doesn't mind it. these expeditions had once been a celebration, a bonding experience among her crew. the part of her that yearns for the past, gold-tinted as it was, is numb, for the most part, but the smallest ounce of gratefulness is there in her smile, the twitching of her lips.

"it's unfortunate," she says with a sigh, "but i'd rather see new life than the alternative."

a brow arches delicately. echo investigates the waters of the pool, hind paws flexing to feel the tremors in the solid earth. her searching bears fruit when she manages to trill and coax a dragalge out of the water for a tussle.

"i haven't." her tone isn't guarded, but it has shifted. flattened somewhat. even here, she cannot escape the reminders.

"but you think you might find them here?"

Dragons clash, the singing wings of a Desert Spirit ringing in a cacophony with ceaseless currents. It echoes through the cavern, amplified; making it so voices seem so quiet by contrast.

Even so, he does not miss it: the change in her tone, the hint at something more. These days people often react negatively when hearing of Unown, it’s something which the DRK Triad has ensured. For a second, Mars is reminded of a meeting at a much different cavern — of the place where he first met the Unown-D that is now among his own.

“Psychic type Pokémon are usually drawn to this place.” He explains to his unexpected companion, smiling cordially all the same. “I guess it’s to be expected, given all the unusual things that go on here.”

He’s not sure if she knows what he’s talking about, but most people in Hoenn are aware of the reputation of Meteor Falls.

A quiet warble on Xanthos’ part brings another reminder, and under the glow of the dragon’s scales, Mars offers a hand to the stranger.

the dragons watch hungrily from the shadows, warded away for the moment so that they might stalk these trespassers. den mothers hiss and cluck to their newborns, drawing them deeper into the caves. most of the sires are more than likely outside of the falls and hunting in the surrounding areas.

"if that's the case, shouldn't you be able to find them all over hoenn?" she says dryly.

echo flits forward, front paws attempting to catch some of the rounded lights coming from the friendly dragapult. freya smiles and reaches out a hand, returning his greeting with her own.

"freya morningstar. most people call me freya." her smile dimples, attention flickering briefly from mars to the echo, who is now chasing a bibarel back into the water.

"how about this? you leave the dragons to me and i'll try and help you find the unown."

"Touché. Maybe Meteor Falls is weird even by Hoenn standards." He jokes, although that isn't far from the truth. There's an obvious reason why the League had not placed one of their primal points here, and Mars is glad that had been the case. Then again, all the actual primal point locations now have rifts to other dimensions in them, so maybe those can be considered even weirder...

The sight of the interaction between the Flygon and Xanthos pulls his thoughts away from the conversation for a moment, a smile tugging at his lips when seeing the Dragapult's luminescent markings pulsating as if for the sake of the other dragon's amusement.

When the Bibarel appears, Xanthos trills as if he were a chattering cat, and although Mars does not care much for the species, he indulges his pokémon, clicking his tongue for the dragon to know that its okay to attack. Dreepy shoot out of horns, fearless and fast. DRAGON DARTS.

"It's nice to meet you, Freya." Mars responds to the introduction then, mentally noting on the familiarity of the name. He smiles all the same. "You got yourself a deal."
