This was probably a bad idea.

Despite his best attempts, he couldn't justify this as work. Shinra wasn't there to analyze blue murtagh , at least not for the intent of trapping her. It felt less like interest to analyze and more... something else? Hell if he knew. He'd never fully understood himself or his own mind, thus this just felt like yet another anomaly.

Maybe it was easy being around someone that was as broken as he was. Even if he put on a better face about seeming anything but broken. He liked the quiet of the icelands. Not only because he preferred the cold to the heat. It felt natural, like a representation of himself. "Are you cold?"

It made no sense otherwise. After all, it wasn’t like they had to go out into the middle of a barren, snowy wasteland for him to conduct more interviews on behalf of Fortree PD. Not that that..would be a problem for much longer. Was that better or worse for them?[break][break]

The thought in plural form made Blue frown. Where had that come from? And even so—what would it matter to him what she did? Why did she care about what he might potentially think? She was losing her mind, surely. Snow crunched under her feet—and even more so under the clomping feet of her . Richard, however, was having a field day—the galarian meowth skittered across the ice slick snow chaotically, claws leaving thin grooves. Her own hands were jammed deep in her pockets, ears burrowed in a fuzzy-lined hat. “Uh, yeah. Aren’t you, weirdo?”[break][break]

She cast him a dour look, though the question held way less vitriol than it should have.

"Mmmm no, not really." Considering he was constantly partnered with a ghost that exuded frost wherever she went, maybe he'd grown accustomed to the cold over time. He slipped his scarf off, "Do you want my scarf?" It wasn't really necessary, he just liked the color — crisp icy blue. Maybe he was a bit odd.

This wasn't exactly an orthodox partnership and after finding out her secret of fighting, well... the one thing he should've been doing was reporting her, not going on a winter excursion with her to catch pokemon. His attention was spared from the thought by a floating crystalline pokemon — a Cryogonal.

Releasing Onna, she attacked with will-o-wisp and then he tossed a pokeball.

“Weirdo,” she grumbled again. Somehow the insult lacked bite. Why did it lack bite? Luckily, the tiny upward curl of her mouth was hidden behind her pulled up jacket collar. “Yeah.” Blue snatched the offered scarf instantly. Maybe it was polite to decline, but she didn’t really care, and instead wrapped around her face and neck quickly.[break][break]

It smelled like Shinra. Weird realization to have.[break][break]

And for some odd reason, she wasn’t complaining about it. Instead she fixed her attention on a lairon charging their way. She met it with her pangoro, who stopped it in its tracks with a wide swinging HAMMER ARM.[break][break]

“So uh, any reason you wanted to come out here?” Asked as she chucked a pokeball.[break][break]

Shinra didn't bother hiding the little smirk that formed as she took his scarf. He didn't mind the loss of it, especially if she'd been cold. After all, this was his idea. He was still wondering why in the hell she would want to come out with him if she didn't want to go somewhere so cold, but he knew better than to ask.

With Blue, he'd discovered that it was the things left unsaid that mattered the most with her. He liked that about her. Surprisingly, he found he liked a lot of things about her. Not that he'd admit to it, but it was pretty obvious since he was there with her, without the desire to psycho-analyze her.

The next pokemon he discovered was... one he'd never seen before. It was intriguing, admittedly. He was never sure what he liked about ice-types, but maybe it was simple the mirroring of his icier nature. Onna attacked once again with will-o-wisp and he launched another pokeball to catch it. "Are you regretting saying yes?" He asked with a little laugh, "I don't know... it's quiet out here."

The forretress that spun along the ice was given little more than a cursory glance.[break][break]

Instead, she watches=d Shinra’s froslass take down the strange, dragon-like creature with a degree of curiosity. It was a slight barrier from the insecurity that flared up under her skin when she caught sight of his smirk out of the corner of his eye. Heat singes her cheeks, exceptionally prickly against the cold.[break][break]

He didn’t comment on her prior words, though, and for that she was grateful. Shinra seemed to have adopted some degree of reservation when it came to asking her questions. She wasn’t exactly sure of why that was. And she didn’t go out of her way to dwell on it for long. But it still felt nice. In a way, it felt like silent, shared understanding. That spoke louder to Blue than any actual verbalized sentiment.[break][break]

“No.” Red eyes peered at him over the edge of the scarf, a bit petulantly so. “It is quiet.” Almost unnervingly so. Despite her reticence, she didn’t do well with actual silence. She huffed, kicking up some snow. “I actually…needed to talk to you anyway.”

"Needed to talk to me, huh?" He couldn't help the smile that slipped across his face, a little smug. Not quite the same vulpine cleverness as his usual, but more so something intrigued and teasing. It felt strange between them for reasons he couldn't fathom. There was no reason for him to be there with her. He wasn't there to study her or to arrest her, so why was he there? Why did he feel that, in a strange way, he benefited from her company. It was absurd. "Color me intrigued."

He was so distracted that the passing of an idle pokemon went unnoticed by him. Onna seemed to handle the wild creatures without his concern. Maybe he shouldn't have been so intrigued by what Blue had to say to him, but he was. Even more so, there was the slightest ounce of fear. In what? Hell if he knew... well, maybe he did. There was the slightest fear that she'd tell him to stop, to never communicate to her again. It wouldn't be unwarranted. She had all the right to detest him and hate the very ground he walked on, but the possibility shouldn't have hurt as much as it did. Anxiety, what a strange thing to recognize in himself.

She almost faltered, looking up to see the twist of his smile that wasn’t nearly so frosty as she’d become used to around him. It made something in her stutter up, freezing her thought process in place for a moment as she quickly looked back down at the snowy ground. “Yeah.” Sulking at the confusing turn of her emotions, her voice turned gruff. But it was no more than a half-hearted scramble to throw some sort of defensive barrier up. Would telling him that he was off the hook mean that he would wash his hands of dealing with her?[break][break]

Her eyes cut to an escavalier hurtling toward her meowth. Rowdy and looking for a fight, Richard launched himself at it willingly, subduing it with the FURY SWIPES of sharpened claws. It was stupid, feeding into her nerves. There was far more to be concerned about than this. “You don’t…well. I’m sure they’ll tell you soon. I submitted my resignation to the Fortree Precinct.” She paused, aiming a pokeball at the pokemon being shredded by her own. “I know you’re covering for me, and that’s why I haven’t been fired yet. You don’t have to do that anymore.” She glanced up, cheeks hot, and then away again.

Blue swung between reactions in a way that was hard to predict, which he liked. It was easy for Shinra to assume a conversation. He could make it through an entire dialogue having predicted where it'd go. Though, then again, most dialogues with him were straight-faced and, admittedly, boring. He invited work talk and boring euphemisms about books or tea or chess. Challenges that went nowhere and conversations without substance. But Blue... well she challenged him in a real sorta way.

It was easier for him to focus on the task, as he spied the Arctozolt, which was... peculiar to say the least. Not in a way he disliked. Releasing his cursola, Kimiko lashed out at the arctozolt with ancient power and he threw a pokeball.

Yet his attention wasn't steeled for long, he looked back at her with a somewhat startled expression. Well, he'd not been expecting that... Maybe he should've been though. She was put under a lot of pressure and he couldn't entirely blame her for that. "But... why?" That response was also not what he planned to say. It was a little surprising for him. He should've been entirely unbothered. After all, it was clear that she wasn't actually interested in police work. It was almost entirely likely she was working for Rocket and he should be glad she was out of the police force, but he felt strangely wrong about it.

Whatever reaction she’d anticipated, it wasn’t the one she received.[break][break]

She frowned, finally looking up at him with more evenness. “Why what?” She shook her head, and deliberately looked away again. She fixated on a delibird sliding down a short slope on its belly. She didn’t know how to grapple with the surprise that filtered into his face. Maybe before, she would have lorded the fact that she’d drawn it out over him. But right now, something about it rendered her prone.[break][break]

Blue tugged at the ends of the scarf he’d given her to use. “Well. It’ll be easier for you, anyway. You won’t have to leave out information about me anymore.” He wouldn’t even really need to continue reporting his results to that office anymore. That was better, wasn’t it? It made her less of a hindrance to him. Less of a burden.[break][break]

Despite that, she was suddenly full of a different dread over his unexpected reaction—was he mad at her for it? For robbing him of the chance for some big reveal about who she was and what she did? Had she ruined some long con she foolishly hadn’t considered an option until right then. The idea made her chest tight with discomfort. It should be indignance, right? Why did it feel more like
a precursor to hurt?
