Wrong. He wanted to retract his question, the surprise in his voice. It wasn't right, it betrayed far too much of himself and he didn't know what to do with that question or the look in her eyes in response. Something about this felt too personal, which wasn't something he knew how to handle. It was easier to focus on the awkward amble of a Bergmite, quickly tossing out a pokeball to catch. Anything that might take his mind away from his misstep.

"So you're doing it for my ease?" He snorted, shaking his head. It wasn't any of his business that she wanted to leave, but he did have to wonder what the point of it was. Knowing Blue, he doubted it had anything to do with him. It smelled like a bullshit excuse.

Her leaving didn't matter to him, not even a little bit. It was less work, he didn't have to worry over his job being disrupted anymore. No more distractions, even if he'd grown to almost enjoy it, a little bit. If this was her attempt to get rid of him, then so be it. He wouldn't be responsible for him and, in the end, it wouldn't look bad on him.

Her attention shifted away briefly toward the new fight her meowth was now picking.[break][break]

STEEL CLAWS cut through a swift FEINT ATTACK leveled at Richard. The meowth had a field day, enjoying the chaos until Blue quashes it by tossing a pokeball at the opposing mawile.[break][break]

She couldn’t avoid him forever, though, and especially not with him right there. Heck, she didn’t even want to. His question sounded hollow, like he didn’t believe her. Blue’s eyes snapped up to his, jaw set. “Yes Shinra, whether you want to believe it or not.” She forced out a sigh, relenting. “And I’m not good at…that job.”[break][break]

Partial truths, but honest even in the halfness of them.[break][break]

Blue hadn’t thought that far ahead, really. Apart from the agreement she’d made with THEO BECKETT to answer his calls and carry out his orders whenever they cropped up. “Dunno, yet. Probably just bounce at a club, or something. Maybe freelance.” Also not wholly untrue.

Kimiko attacked a wandering glalie with earth power and he focused his efforts on catching it. It was an unfair distraction, he shouldn't be mad. This had nothing to do with him, really. Or at least, he hoped it didn't. And yet, part of him greedily wanted that involvement. Why? He shook his head. Blue involved him regardless, saying it was for him. Yeah right.

"Well believe it or not, I'm a grown man and I can make decisions on my own." He didn't deny that he was doing those things. He also didn't call it a bad decision. It wasn't. He didn't regret covering Blue's shady practices. A few weeks ago though, this effort would have been maddening. Shinra from a few weeks ago wouldn't have done this.

Part of him didn't trust that answer, which was a problem. If it really was just freelance work, it wouldn't have mattered. She could make her own decisions too. "Okay well... good luck then?" He wanted to say something barbed like good luck and good riddance, because that was what this was, right? A goodbye.

Richard was looking for another creature to sink STEEL CLAWS into. The galarian meowth skittered around until he uncovered a swinub. The first squeal from the little pig drew Blue’s attention, though, and she quickly threw a pokeball before the feline caused too much havoc. It was no more than a distraction from the tumult turning over inside of her. Was he mad at her?[break][break]

The sharp response made her flinch—something she covered by turning away to pick up the pokeball as it rolled to a stop in the snow. It didn’t make sense. She thought this would be a relief for him. Make her less of a burden. The red in her eyes sharpened as she felt flickers of hurt and annoyance. “Well sorry for trying to do a good thing for once.”[break][break]

But it was like she’d said at the bar—she wasn’t good or kind of compassionate. And she definitely wasn’t any good at making attempts to do anything reflecting those qualities. This only confirmed it.[break][break]

Standing straight again, a hand rose to tuck the scarf tighter around her face. It masked her frown, but not the pinch of her eyebrows. “…thanks.” Why did that feel more like a dismissal? Why did that sting? Blue huffed, warring with her words. “Now, it won’t be…a conflict of interest. To be around me.”

The tensions were unnecessarily high, Shinra knew. It shouldn’t have even mattered to him, in the slightest. He shouldn’t be at all bothered, and yet… Somehow, blue murtagh had gone and gotten under his skin. She found a place there like a barbed thorn and wasn’t letting go of him yet. The problem was that she was letting go and he wasn’t ready for that yet.

”Ah yes, please mount a flag at the top of moral high ground and kindly keep me the hell out of it. I don’t need any justification.” He was being too snappy, he should remove himself emotionally. With a deep exhale, he shook his head, ignoring an artibax that was seeking cover likely frightened away by their bickering. This wasn’t what he intended when he invited her out here.

The harsh tone in his voice made her wince. Unused to the sting that came instead of the sharp snap of anger, Blue shied from it. Turned to direct Richard at another escavalier, which he pounced on the back of with obvious glee. She thought that when she turned back around, she’d be able to rebuff him. That the comfortable irritation she knew like a second skin would slip back around her and burn her up from the inside out.[break][break]

Instead, when her mouth opened what came out was pitiful and sad, and she hated it. “Why are you being like this? I was trying to be helpful!”[break][break]

She didn’t understand. Blue thought that he would’ve wanted this. That he wouldn’t want the burden of her taxing his job and weighing him down. That he wouldn’t want her around. It was par for the course. Something she’d come to expect more often than not. The frustration that lashed back at her wasn’t what she’d thought would happen. She’d thought he’d be relieved to be rid of her.[break][break]

The question turned back toward her wasn’t anticipated. Finally, her face pinched up in a huffy sort of anger. But at the same time, her face flushed with ugly color. Obvious in a way that couldn’t be hidden by his scarf. “Does it really need saying?” she barked back, frantic and embarrassed that it did apparently seem necessary.[break][break]

“Do you actually think I’d say that if I didn’t care to be around you?” Her arms folded, face turned stubbornly away. “For someone so clever, you really are an idiot, Shitra.”

Blue flinched and the movement made a deep sting of regret cut through him. It made him want to retreat, back to the unfeeling place that he was more comfortable in. It was safer there, where he didn't care what or who was bothered by him. It wasn't his problem. Seeing Blue hurt by his words stung more than he cared to admit. His eyes slipped to the frigid ground below, a heavy sigh slipping free and freezing in the atmosphere. This was the type of place he was accustomed to.

All he could do at that prompted question was shrug, "If that was your choice to quit then that's fine, just don't say it was for my benefit because it wasn't." Maybe she did care like that, afraid of her choices affecting him. He knew what she did, but also knew there was more to it. It would take nothing for him to determine what that truly was, but his inaction proved his bias.

Somehow, she had intercepted his loyalty to his job, to his beloved justice. Ridiculous.

"Maybe, I don't know. You don't... exactly make logical sense." That was his problem more than her's, but it wasn't posed that way. She wasn't the problem because he couldn't understand that things didn't need to be logical. There was nothing logical about this... whatever this was.

"I'm not..." He scoffed, realizing that maybe he was too stupid to understand this, "I just don't think I'm who you think I am."

Her eyes narrowed to ruby slivers, lip curling slightly though she forced herself to not bare her teeth. How strange it was to feel like she should try to temper herself. She’d never cared about what anyone said or thought of her anger, or her volatility. Unless they were in a position of authority over her. And Shinra wasn’t. Maybe at one point there’d been an air of it, but not anymore. So why did she bother to try? “I don’t think you get to decide how I say things, or how I mean them.”[break][break]

Unexpectedly, all of this hurt. She’d thought that maybe, if she could get it right just once, it’d be better. That he’d be pleased with her. She called him an idiot, but she felt like the fool. Her self-inflicted resentment swelled, inflating like a too full balloon near to bursting.[break][break]

The words lanced through her. A rejection of sorts. The clear indicator that she was some sort of failed expectation, or subpar in stature. She’d thought that there were parts of them that were alike. It had felt that way at the bar. Drunk or not, she’d been sure of it. Blue didn’t deal in what was logical or not; she reacted to what provoked her emotions. All of them, even if it was chiefly her anger.[break][break]

“What does that even mean?” she finally barked, voice climbing as the remaining threads of her temper snapped. “Why should that matter? Who am I supposed to think you are?” puffs of angry breath hung in the air around her, brows pinched together as she stared up at him. Cheeks cold, but burning painfully.[break][break]

Every bit of her expectant. Demanding. Pleading?

It wasn't hard to tell when Blue was losing her temper. She bristled up like one of her poochyena, barely suppressing the animal tantrum. Puffing up like she was trying to look bigger, fully aware that she was the most dangerous animal around. She was in all ways different from him in that. It was something he envied, yet also something he inexplicably admired and liked about her. Maybe more than he deemed safe to admit to.

Logical, that was the problem. It felt like a requirement he couldn't wriggle free from. In all things he required logic and structure and control and if he didn't have it, things got ugly. He knew when he was headed in that direction, that blooming disgust under his skin and the telltale shiver of nerves in his hands. When even contact with the air made him cringe with a want to curl up. Had it been a few years ago, in a different place and at a different time, things would have been different. Blue was the very antithesis of his beliefs, and it wouldn't have mattered to him if she had suffered or died in the name of those beliefs. Things were different, something changed.

"Because it matters!" He shouted, a harsh crack through the silent icelands. "I'm not who I'm supposed to be. I'm... I'm someone else. Maybe you should stay away from me." His voice was sharp, lashed out in a way that he wasn't overly familiar with, cutting off to a nearly inaudible mutter. He clenched his fist on the shaking in his hand. A brief pause, he forced himself to get his shit together. "You're right, it doesn't matter. I should go. I'm sorry."

Shinra yelled at her. All this time she hadn’t heard him shout, let alone raise his voice. And now it was leveled at her. Her temper lashed and her hands balled into fists at her sides. But when the feeling bubbled up, she didn’t shout back. She didn’t implode in that familiar, comfortable way. It would have been easier if that had happened. It would’ve made it easier to write him off as just someone else for her to feel let down by. Instead, she shrunk in the wake of it like a scolded animal. And stupidly, she felt her throat twist up. She wanted to push and shove him away. Pummel those fists against his chest until he took it back.[break][break]

Instead, she sucked in a sharp breath that hit the back of her throat and forced out a strangled sound because of the chill in the air. His rambling explanations went unanswered, uncontested. She didn’t fight back because clearly he’d already made his mind off, and it was so easy to shake her off. He got mad at her for shifting the parameters of their connection to make it simpler, but then it happened in the next breath without a second thought. Blue turned away, refusing to look his way as her arms folded tight and defensive around herself. Hot, angry tears brimmed on her eyelashes, which was confusing and infuriating all at once. “Yeah. Sure you are. Whatever, just go. It’s nothing new.”
