Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, League Interview OST

On the third floor of Ever Grande's League Offices, a single room stripped of any embellishments existed. Inside, a single desk of marble and wood, and two chairs, one for the interviewer, and another for the interviewee, illuminated by vaguely warm, halogen light.

Callan slipped in several minutes early, as usual. In front of him was a single laptop that he placed slightly ajar from the center of the desk as he awaited the participants entry. He crossed his legs and opens up a word document of existing generic questions that he would ask to any trainer.

Mint isn't quite sure what to expect. He's practiced with interviews at least. Perfect smiles or neutral expressions. Trained in avoiding words that give away too many emotions. Concise phrases that could say it all. This painting is...this. The inspiration was...whatever. [break][break]

But Michaelis Fisk was a different person, a different kind of public speaker. Fed questions early, as well as the most pleasing answers to follow. [break][break]

Mint Frost is just a champion hopeful, smiling his way past a secretary towards his appointment. As far as he knew, this was the first he'd ever heard of an interview for the Elite Four. But maybe, considering the ever increasing number of natural and unnatural disasters in the region, this was recruitment. [break][break]

He remembered MATIAS SILPH ' question about joining the military all those months ago. Mint had wiggled his way out of it, but now what? If he got through the E4...if he made it to face the champion? He liked that this would afford him a show of strength but at the same time he remembers THEO BECKETT and how easily he'd beat the ever living fuck out of his Blissey. This is a controlled environment. There's still limits here and there. The only real way to measure strength was on a real battlefield. That worried him. [break][break]

Nevertheless he wouldn't let it put a damper on this. SPECTRA could use some closer observations of the League's best and brightest. Sure, there was the occasional footage or report, but what's better than first hand witness? [break][break]

He entered knocked first, before moving through the designate office door. His interviewer is already present. "Morning~!" he greeted, not one to be dampened by the heavy air. He could ace this. He'd come this far. "I'm not late am I?" he added jokingly, as he stepped forward to shake Callan's hand.

"Hey Mint, you're just on time actually." Callan greeted as the familiar blue bobcut came into view. Callan rose up and extended the chair for him, before seating himself down.

"Let's get started." He moves the mouse, and clicks. A red blip forms at the edge of the screen, a timer begins to run. "So this test is meant to be an assessment on your character. For the purposes of this interview, I'd like for you to answer less like an interview, and more like you're telling me about yourself." Callan begins, offering a small smile.

As Callan speaks, lines to text run across the page. "So, first of all can you introduce yourself and tell me the reasons you'd like to take the Champion Assessment?"

Mint nodded along, placid smile intact as he got comfortable in his chair. "Oh, of course!" He suppressed the urge to twiddle with his hands well. Palms placed carefully on crossed legs, eyes on Callan as he spoke. "Well, my name is Mint Frost, and I'm really excited to be here." Natural energy began to flow off him as he began to speak. [break][break]

"I initially thought some of the gym challenges would be fun on their own merit, mostly the non traditional battles certain places offered." he began. "After a while, and a stream or two, I began getting comments from people who were insecure about the gyms or were scared to challenge. So I wanted to encourage people to try them out more, even if they were normally hard core trainers." he said as he tilted his head slightly while recalling the exact tweets and comments. "But, I also wanted to improve my own skills. I wasn't a very good battler before and after Groudon trashed Mt. Chimney, I felt a little defenseless even with a capable team. I figured, I can't let my own pokemon carry me. I should probably learn too." He's grinning a bit at this point. "And now I'm here. I just kept going."

"I see." Callan replies, making sure that all of Mint's words were captured on the screen. His eyes turned towards the prospective trainer, unflinching as he studies them. "What do you think separates a trainer being strong, as opposed to their Pokemon being strong?"

Mint looks around the room as he waited for Callan to continue, curious if this was Callan's place of work or not. Felt a little impersonal, to be honest. But, what did he know. Might just be a spare room. [break][break]

"Resilience." Mint answered automatically, eyes moving back to Callan. "It's taken me a long time to get where I am." he said with a bright laugh and a grin. "And if you give up, so does your team." he continued, steering the conversation back to his pokemon.

Callan listens as Mint provides a brief overview of what being a strong trainer meant to him. However, there was still something Callan wanted to clarify. "Could you give me an example of a time where you were resilient, in your own definition?"

"I almost quit on Josh Devlin 's Dragon Slope. Way too crazy for me." he began with a snort. "Buuut, my partner really likes racing, so even after throwing up a couple of times during the flight, I held on because he really loved it." he said with a small shrug.

"Okay, thanks for sharing." Callan's thumb briefly runs against his chin as he crosses his legs and rests a hand on the desk. "But in this particular instance, it seems that it was your Pokemon that pushed you to get past the gym. Your definition of 'resilience' was that you should be the one who inspires your Pokemon to push past their limits.

Verbatim: If you give up, so does your team." Callan reads on the script that was written based on Mint's words. "But you last said that you were almost ready to give up until you saw how much your Pokemon enjoyed it. So in what manner does this demonstrate your resilience?"

He tilted his head, tapping his chin for a moment. Guess Callan Young really had a point. But then again, he doesn't want to share more than he needed to. He could always make something up like in a job interview. "I guess you could say inspiration goes both ways. Agretti would've quit if I had asked him too." he said with a small laugh.

But let's think of something else. "In the dome, I'd almost given up getting out of it. MY work slowed down a lot and I stayed home a lot more. I felt like I was getting sicker but I didn't show any symptoms. To take my mind off thigns I redoubled my efforts on my streaming. Since I didn't go out as much I tried playing games with friends or followers to pass the time. It helped me focus on something else instead of spiraling."

He shrugged. "I could've given up, but then I'd have jsut spiraled and deteriorated in my bathtub." Which he did do, profusely, after Gelatto's death but...well he got better after a while. The threat of continental extinction had been a big factor too.

Callan paused, then nods. "I see." He replies, as he listens to the rest of Mint's reply. He provides no further elaboration on his thoughts, but he needed more clarification. "I'd like to ask you a hypothetical question." Callan begins.

"You are going to be facing a member of the Elite Four." Callan begins, "This member of the Elite Four, you know, is a specialist in Dragon Type Pokemon and likes using moves that boost their parameters to empower their Pokemon." Callan pauses, allowing for Mint to absorb the information. "The first Pokemon he sends out is Dragonite. With this knowledge in mind, which one of your Pokemon do you send out, and what move do you use against them?"

He smiled and nodded. "Sure, hit me." he tilted his head as Callan proceeded. He mulled it over for a bit before countering. "I'd probably try using my Vaporeon, Calici. You can cover for an Ice type counter from the Dragonite, and they can also cancel out the attack boost with HAZE." he said. Though, he couldn't remember if Calici had that learned or not.

Callan listens as Mint picks his choice of Pokemon, and the reasoning behind it. "Great." At this stage Callan had a pretty good ballpark estimate of Mint's capacity as a trainer. Once from battling him and another from this hypothetical example.

"Let's move on to the next segment. I'd like you to tell me about your training style, how do you raise your Pokemon?"

He tilted his head at the next question. "Well, I used to spoil them a lot but it made them a bit more prone to act on their own in battle." Even when he would rather they move as he asked. "However, I started pivoting into more regimented training for myaelf and subsequently my pokemon. I got running on Mt. Pyre, they come with me and get in the cardio. I do mock battles with them to gage their health and my strategies. If I can, I take them to parks to roam on free days. My apartment is too small for some of my team." He explained.
