There was nothing else to it—

Asides from the ingredients for Alto Marean carbonara (no sins of humanity here, this is the real thing) and finger sandwiches… a terrible, terrible fact dawned on Lars.

He was a shit chef in the kitchen when it came to anything else asides from the mentioned.

How the hell he lived so long on mostly take out (after he left Alto Mare and came back here) was a mystery, really…

Today’s gathering was going to be much calmer, he hoped, because the last time he’d hosted a potluck shit had gone south.

At least the invitees for today were family! So that was some load of worry off him for a while.

He’d sent out messages to his cousins, asking if they were free on this day and if they could bring something to contribute to the meal they were going to have over at his place—

Seeing as he’d already finished the carbonara and laid it out on the table. Even the tableware was mismatched, because he only ever had enough tableware for what, two people at the most?

(And that was when evan fader came over from time to time… a long time ago, now. His heart still ached whenever he thought about the other man.)

So for lack of fanfare, Lars was busy in the kitchen area, making these little finger sandwiches and looking absolutely panicked.

Alpha the Lucario was watching him from another part of the house, though, thoroughly unimpressed with the way he was literally panicking.

It's rare for the culinarily-challenged like Lumia to pull off miracles in the kitchen, but on the rare occasions - such as the seventh time of the month where her dragons have called her toaster crusty and proceeded to trash the 30th(?) fire alarm of the year - she does manage to pull off said miracles.

This time, it takes the form of a pot of creamy salmon soup and a box of stuffed cabbage rolls; A little something from the recipe book that her mother had stowed in the kitchen. And under the watchful eyes of her Kommo-o and Dragapult, the goods are delivered safely to Laurence Anderson doorstep, the two dragons squinting through whatever windows they might find as Lumia skillfully lets herself in.

Spying Alpha watching the kitchen, she places her index finger to her lips and smiles. There's no need to interrupt the man while he loses his shit in the kitchen. Instead, she guides Ren and Nithe in putting the dishes down, carefully arranging the table so nothing gets dropped by accident.

An Anderson family get-together wasn't exactly high on the list of things that Autumn wanted to participate in and, if it'd been from her immediate family, you can be sure that Autumn would have blown it off, or rather, "accidentally forgotten all about it" after assuring her parents that she'd "for sure be there this time". But her parents hadn't sent the message, one of her cousins had, and Autumn had to admit that she was more than a little curious about the bits of the family that dear old mom and dad didn't want to talk about.

Worst case, there'd be at least one thing that they all had in common. Well, everyone except Elinor that is. The fact that she'd been invited along as well had put a bit of a damper on Autumn's overall excitement for the whole thing, but at least she'd have someone to hitch a ride with. She really needed something with wings in her repertoire.

And when Elinor proved less than interested in having Autumn hitch a ride with her -citing something about work (surprise, surprise) and her being likely to show up late - Autumn found herself making her way to Lars's place on her own, which was honestly just fine by her. It meant that she could hit an upscale looking pastry shop for desserts on the way instead of trying to muddle something together herself.

While the prospect of ruining Elinor's pristine kitchen brought her no small amount of joy, she knew that it would be Elinor's pokemon who would be forced to clean up any mess she left behind, rather than Elinor herself, and she wasn't looking to make their lives any harder than they already were. So she opted for a four individual slices of tiramisu made by people who, unlike her, clearly knew what they were doing, and that was that. Had it made her a few minutes late? Sure, but there was something to be said for being fashionably late rather than whatever it was that Elinor would probably be doing, and judging by the line of people out the door when she arrived at the pastry shop, it would probably be well worth it.

Shifting the box to tuck it under one arm, Autumn reached for the doorbell.

Ding-dong --- time to see how much this branch of the family sucks.

What were the odds of her day-off being canceled? Pretty high, especially when Lars had invited the whole family over. To make matters worse, she had even planned to give Autumn a ride over there, perhaps try to mend the bridge with a brief sign of kindness. But alas Hoennian politics would drive a wedge in that plan.

The matter was one in which she could not simply leave to her unpaid intern or the secretary. And as such for the majority of the day she was to be found at the office powering through papers dedicated to important initiatives for the League.

By the time she got off, it was already way past the agreed upon time.

And yet, she quickly made her way to the local Alto Maren pizza place, bought two of their ‘best’ pizzas before she made her way to Lars’s place with the pizza’s in hand.

Bathed in guilt and a pang of shame, she rang the doorbell. She hadn’t even had a chance to change out of the Business-suit she wore. The fatigue was painted plainly on her face as the office work had taken its toll upon her, even though she did try to hide it.

Alpha was by the door—and the moment he saw the two familiar draconids peeking through the window, he knew who’d arrived first—unsurprisingly it was Lumia.

The Lucario then opened the door for her, and then just shook his head her way—it was clear these two had definitely seen things about the idiot human who was trying not to have a damned-ass meltdown in the kitchen by grating an entire mountain of cheese for the Alto Marean carbonara he was going to make.

“Hi, Lumie,” he began without looking up as he returned his attention to the pot of water—which was already boiling by the time the door opened a second time—although instead of Elinor, someone else had come in…

Wait, didn’t Eli say something about a younger sister?

“Eli’s not here yet… wonder what’s keeping her,” he continued to the greenette who came in with a box. Hopefully Eli would show up soon…

He’d tried contacting Ann Nickolette, but the little rat was nowhere to be found—he wondered where she’d run off to. Knowing her and her penchant for food… she’d definitely not want to miss this.

The scent of pizza finally made him look up (he was already done draining the pasta and was now mixing the sauce into the noodles before ladling it out) and realize that Eli had finally arrived.

“What happened?” he went on her way, before catching sight and the beginnings of a shit-eating grin flashed on his face.

“Eli, I swear if you ordered nine pizzas again…” he cracked, trailing off and biting back the snort that threatened to escape him before he returned his attention to the one dish he was capable of making without assistance—

“The table’s ready, lemme just finish this up.”

Weather Trio be damned, how awkward was this going to be?!

Given how many times she's visited his place, it comes as no surprise that Lars can identify her without so much as a glance in her direction. Still, she can't help but wonder whether that's indicative of just how often his other guests visit.

Wait, who was invited again?

She doesn't recognise the first figure that steps in, but the second is a face she's grown to know. Though, Elinor Anderson seems a little frazzled. Has she just come from whatever work she's had to do? All Lumia feels like she can do in this unfamiliar situation is to pour a glass of water and offer it to those who just arrived.
