Two words that shut down every little bit of comfort he tries to offer on the matter. What does she see when she closes her eyes and thinks of her mother? The horrible flames still swirl in those ruby eyes, haunting and eating at her from the inside.[break][break]

And on the rare occasions that she can draw out a beautiful memory, all that she's left with is the bottomless hole in her heart that reminds her of things she can no longer have.[break][break]

"Pa would be so worried if he knew where I was now. Momma would laugh for the first few minutes but then she'd try her best to get me out... But what is Chu-e Choi gonna do to try and build a home for us?"[break][break]

He would be divulging secrets that no one in the League had intel on. He would be trading his life up in exchange for hers. But when the dust truly settled, would she be spared of Rocket's anger? Or would she be deemed the quickest way to cut into Chu-e's betrayal?[break][break]

"They're... taking everything..."[break][break]

"They're... I shouldn't have had any of this, if I just... died that day with momma and pa."[break][break]

Her drawings have grown into an incomprehensible mess, jagged spirals covering majority of the surfaces and cutting out anything recognisable. And though she does her best to hide it, there's no stifling the sniffles.[break][break]

Parents who, if they could cross the fabric of time and space, life and death, would do anything in their power to get Eris out of her current situation. She still did, but who that parent was changed. And that parent had a hell of an extended family all too willing to make their lives hell for it.[break][break]

The League was taking everything from her now. Rocket would take everything from her later. Accepting one side would force another's hand and send them into war against her. She was scribbling up a storm of discordant panic. She was sniffling and trembling. "Eris-" Isaac started, not wanting to override her will but hating seeing her like this. "Eris, please, you have to breathe-"[break][break]

She wished that she'd died instead, and the tears Isaac tried to hold back started to roll down his cheeks.[break][break]

"You told me that Rocket was a cage where good people go to be chained by dependency. That it was a monster, but that the fear people have for that monster is a monster in its own right. That you're sick of the sides, the wars, the pain, the suffering. That you believed in a world where people like us could finally be free, even if getting there was hell."[break][break]

"You believed the world could be better. That I could be better."[break][break]

He closed his eyes and sighed. When they opened again, they were met by a confident smile. No amount of tears flowing from his eyes could force it to waver. "I do, too. And I believe in you. And for what little it's worth . . . I'm going to fight for that reality. I'm not going to let them take everything from you. But I can't do any of it without you."[break][break]

It was time for the ultimate Copperajah in the room. For all Isaac and Eris could talk about this, he knew that where Chu-e Choi went, Eris followed. Were he to deny the League, she would never have a home outside of Rocket. Were he to embrace the League, she would join his side. This next question was key to everything.[break][break]

"What does Chu-e have to say about all this?"

"It sounds like you should talk to him about it," Isaac said. "Your worries. Your doubts. Your fears. But also your hopes. Your goals. Your dreams. Everything. Right now, you guys are alone, right? That means anything you two say to each other can be your secret. And nobody, League or Rocket, can ever use it to hurt you."[break][break]

"And I promise he'll never leave you."[break][break]

He thought back to his own family, how the unconditional love of father and son proved itself conditional as soon as he wasn't a son. He thought back to how Jayden hunted down Ashley with malicious hatred, only to do an about face as soon as he came crawling back to Rocket. He thought about how some Rockets seemed ready to hurt Eris for her outburst at the Sootopolis summit, whereas others were horrified that she was even a part of the meeting in the first place. He thought about Melody, who tried her best but had to give up for her own sanity.[break][break]

"The thing about family, kid? The ones who truly love you are gonna find a way. No matter what." The people in Rocket who cared for her most . . . surely they wouldn't let that love turn into hatred just because a literal child didn't want to be a terrorist, right? "And the ones who don't understand . . ." Father. Rocket. Each a towering monolith overshadowing Isaac's mind.[break][break]

"Well, they don't deserve you in the first place."[break][break]

He knew Chu-e Choi would understand. He knew Chu-e would care. He knew that, even if it wasn't as simple as a clean break on a dime, he'd find a way to keep Eris safe. With how she spoke about him, he had to. He had to![break][break]

Isaac's smile was weary as the seriousness of this conversation started to press down on him like a ton of bricks. "Sheesh. Talk about too many blasts from the past," Isaac said. "I think I'm gonna need a hug after all that."

But the world wasn't perfect. Eris wasn't just a victim in all this. She was an active participant. She was in far too deep to shelter the truth from. If she stayed with Rocket, she'd need to be ready for the realities of what the League could do to her. If she sought asylum, she'd need to be ready for how Rocket could react.[break][break]

"I don't know if he'll ever tell you everything-everything. But if you two are gonna be in this together, you're gonna have to be in the loop on some things," Isaac said. "I know he'll understand."[break][break]

The other part was a little bit harder. The League would know that she was a weak point. Rocket would know that she was a weak point. Even if Chu-e Choi tried to distance himself from her, all they'd have to do was go after her to prove he was just blowing smoke. It was heartbreaking to admit, but Eris would never have a chance of a normal life.[break][break]

Eris seemed to know this. She seemed to know that her attempts at a normal life were built on a foundation of bad people. Yet trying to process that was agony for her. Frankly, it was agony for Isaac, too. Everyone in Rocket had their stories. Everyone in Rocket had their pains. Everyone in Rocket had their virtues. But the ends they were working towards . . .[break][break]

"People are always going to disappoint us," Isaac said. Sure, sometimes he meant "they left the fridge door open" and sometimes he meant "they're cruelly trying to crush the Hoenn region under their heel", but he was trying to be as gentle with these mind-shattering revelations as he could be here! "But that doesn't mean the love you have for them, and the love they have for you, is any less real. You're not a bad person for caring about them, even when it makes things hard."[break][break]

"It just means you need to take that love you feel and let it guide you towards the person you want to be. Then one day, when you're the one being looked up to, you'll know how important it is to do right by them."[break][break]

The daughter need not suffer under the sins of the father. The love of the father, on the other hand, was a far harder pain to ignore.

"What if I want to be someone that helps everyone, no matter what side they're on? Not in doing bad things or sabotaging but just... I want to protect them... I don't want them to fight." Her pencil clatters a little as she puts it down, her gaze dropping to Reiner's paw as he gently places it on her lap. "I... don't think I could ever fight them... even if they tried to hurt me... but if they do, they'll be trying to kill me for real."[break][break]

Scooping the Luxray's paw into her hands, Eris begins to knead it gently.[break][break]

"I know I'm not weak... I'm... I've gotten a lot stronger after everything... but I don't feel like I can - I don't know if I can look them in the eye and say I don't regret anything."

"You'll need to be ready to defend yourself. To escape, if you have to. Its okay if you don't relish in it. No matter what anyone says, that's the wrong wsy to fight." To savor violence was one step before seeking it out and taking it too far. Lives being on the line was a grim responsibility. "You're a tough kid, y'know. Arceus knows you could probably kick my butt. But you're right. It'd be better if you didn't have to."[break][break]

How could she do it? How could she avoid conflict without cramming herself into this perfect, torturous little cage? How could she enjoy the life she wanted with Chu-e Choi without putting a target on her back? How could she pursue her goal of helping everyone amd harming no one? Isaac thought, and thought, and thought, practically shriveling inwards into his brain. And then, like an egg timer going "ding", he perked up.[break][break]

It's all going so fast... having to be ready to defend herself? Think of ways to escape? She still hasn't come to terms with the thought of leaving it all behind. And is she really ready to move on? Is she ready to let go of that lifeline that had kept her afloat for so long?[break][break]

The room seems to close in on her, the fluorescent lights blinding her as she stares down at the dark spirals on her paper.[break][break]

"They... Rocket probably knows... I don't know what the League has..." She's almost missing as she speaks, lost in a trance as she tries to process everything. "I-"[break][break]

Nowhere safe, nowhere to hide. How is she supposed to protect Reiner? Or Chu-e? Or Mesprit? Does she really have as much strength as she thinks she has? Will they leave her alone if she doesn't fight back?[break][break]

Everything about her family, burning up in her face as she finds unspoken threats hovering around her throat.[break][break]

What other option did he have? He wasn't the child psychologist that should be here. He wasn't even her father figure or anything like that. He was just some big hearted little idiot charging full speed ahead to solve a problem far too big for him, all because nobody else would. So what if he was just taking it all on his shoulders like some kind of emotional sponge? At least it was something. At least they were getting one step forward for every dozen steps back.[break][break]

Were Eris to respond well to the exercise, he'd at least walk her through the rest of it. Yet, if she didn't . . .

Is the air being stolen from her lungs or is she refusing to take any in? The world is blurring and bleeding into one incomprehensible mess.[break][break]

But amidst it all is an unyielding calm, a pair of warm golden eyes that rest upon her, draw her in and pulls her close. The Luxray never once makes a sudden move, only unfurls to give her space whilst taking her hand with his tail and squeezing tight. Even as she closes her eyes to shut the world out, he never lets go, his low purrs rumbling through his chest when he rests his head against her shoulder.[break][break]

An endless space, just for the two of them. They're allowed that much of a dream, a safe space hidden away from all others.[break][break]

Sniffles and hiccups are what's left, shaky breaths sucked in through her teeth and let go of through dry lips.[break][break]

It's scary, trying to take such a big step. What seems like the smallest of hops for the adults feels more like a large, bottomless ravine that she can't feasibly just jump over. Try as she might to keep her gaze focused on the other side, there are always those thoughts that beg for her to consider just how far she might fall. Even if Chu-e Choi were there to hold her hand, would she really be able to take that step?[break][break]

She sobs, hiding her face in her hands as the tears burn at her palms.[break][break]

Where she went now, Isaac couldn't follow. She was in a place for her and Reiner now. A special place, sacred and hidden and untouched by the world around her. A part of him longed to reach out, pierce the veil, try to say something. Seeing her in such dire straits made his heart feel like it was tearing in half. Wasn't there anything he could do?[break][break]

No. The whole problem was that every space Eris could possibly call her own had been colonized. Kanto had been razed to the ground by Team Rocket. Hoenn had been shaped into her prison by the League. As horrible as it sounded, Eris' tears were the only thing she had left to call her own. Isaac didn't dare take that last sanctuary from her.[break][break]

He could see why Melody Miro lost her patience with Eris. She was someone who had already been forced to take that step for her own good. She had already been forced into the coldest, loneliest parts of adulthood. She knew that what was on the other side was objectively better, and what was on the side she escaped was dark and full of monsters. To her, she was dangling a rope that had never been offered to her, only to be met with indecision and resistance at every turn.[break][break]

But for Eris? This was the biggest step she'd ever take in her entire life.[break][break]

It was a step too big for some adults to take. Isaac could only look at himself, a chickenshit coward hiding behind a shield of "what-ifs" and "what-abouts." Eris had the same hopes for him that he had for her, and he rejected the opportunity for much the same reasons. He was an adult. He was old enough to understand and suffer these risks. But she was a child. She felt things fifty times more strongly than any adult in the world. No matter what he knew she had to do, he knew a decision one way or the other would be agonizing for her.[break][break]

Finally, she spoke, reopening a window to her world for Isaac to see. He adjusted his seating a little, approaching a hair closer, as if to remind Eris that he was present here. He didn't want to impose or startle. Just remind her what he'd already promised. After all, she was still in pain, and therefore he was still here.[break][break]

"I want that too, kid," Isaac said, a somewhat sorrowful smile on his face. He knew what he wanted seemed impossible. But so far, he'd looked impossible in the eye and fought it at every step of the way. "And I'm not gonna give up 'til you are, okay? Not as some fugitive or any crap like that, either. The real deal. Home, and free."

How does Raziel Beckett do it? Charging forwards without a shred of doubt in his mind? She's seen the bitterness he holds and she knows that maybe, she doesn't wish to embrace such an emotion.[break][break]

How does Melody Miro do it? Simply placing labels and readying herself to fight? She's has seen how much Melody's grown to despise the monsters that have warped her and in a sense, she can feel the same way. But that anger and inability to let go is something that would burn her up from the inside, and she knows she might not ever return if she loses herself to that storm.[break][break]

John Sullivan knows that he's lost things that can never be replaced, Locke Jamison has experienced the grudges of those who have been murdered. Even Eva Morales must harbour some hatred for what's happened in Kanto, and Chu-e Choi is simply tired of all this fighting.[break][break]

She too, wants to find her own answer as to how she should move on. But her voice chokes up, the fears creep in, the worries cloud her mind.[break][break]

She can just barely hear Isaac Merlo's words, and she doesn't want to look him in the eyes whilst the tears keep rolling down. But she knows he's trying, she knows that Melody's trying and that Chu-e's most certainly doing his best. Even if it's baby steps... even if she stumbles along the way... she should at least dare to give it a try, right?[break][break]
