"'Isaac Merlo, Professional Asshole' just sounds wrong," Ruby agreed. She couldn't quite parse the look beneath Isaac's wry smile, though. Was he disappointed by that? Either way, being able to banter like this without digging up those unpleasant feelings was kinda nice. Isaac was right to think that it brought a bit of normalcy back to her life in a way that keeping house just didn't.

[break][break]Ruby shrugged at Isaac's comment after he'd entered. It was true that Isaac was crafty enough to dig info out of people and loyal enough to commit to it if it meant helping someone he cared about (and that thought almost hurt), but this was a bit different. This was something that'd be hard to hide from anyone who knew that Cerberus was one of Ruby's top Pokémon. Or, at least, he had been.

[break][break]Shutting and locking the door behind her suddenly made her own apartment seem like more of a prison. Dammit. She'd agreed to this, but that didn't make it any easier. She wandered into the kitchen, suddenly needing water, and almost stepped into the pile of dust she'd made earlier. Right, shit, she'd been sweeping. She pushed that mess into an unobtrusive corner to deal with later, then grabbed a glass to fill from the tap.

[break][break]While she did all that, Isaac had free reign of the living room. It was sparsely decorated outside of a few photos of Ruby and Jade, some from all the way back in Orre. The furniture was mismatched, and some of it looked like it'd been fixed up a couple of times. On one of the side tables was a Dusk Ball sitting in a small metal holder. The framed photo next to it looked to be a few years old and depicted Ruby standing in some fenced-in field. She was partially turned toward the camera with one hand on her hip, like she'd been trying to pose for the picture, but she was doubled over laughing at the sight of a young Cerberus shaking something made of cloth in his jaws.

[break][break]Suddenly, a glass of water was being shoved into Isaac's hands. "Here," Ruby said, holding a glass of her own.

[attr="class","skullbody"]To Ruby, her apartment may have felt like a prison. To Isaac, it looked a hell of a lot nicer than what they had on the Rocket sub. Sure, it was a little haphazard. There were two clearly different aesthetics being blended around the house. Ruby wasn't throwing around money the way some other Rockets might. But her apartment was cozy, and all of the little personal touches that made it look less like some catalogue made it seem even more like a home.[break][break]

One in particular, a Dusk Ball set beside a photo of a teenaged Ruby, got a small smile across Isaac's face. See? He knew she was the sentimental type! Look at how much she loved her Houndoom. Rather than keeping his ball in the PC system like a bunch of other Pokemon, she had it proudly displayed in a place of honor. It was almost as if ol' Cerberus was . . .[break][break]

The uproarious laughter on Ruby's face made her tired eyes and neutral scowl in the present day all the more heartbreaking. He tried to hide his wince as she approached, and made a point of not turning back to that all too public, all too private display.[break][break]

Part of him wanted to assure her that it was okay. That he knew what it was like. That Kiryu's death had taken a horrendous toll on him, and he didn't want her to suffer through Cerberus' alone. Another part of him wanted to just hug her tight and promise her that everything would be okay.[break][break]

But this was Ruby. Sentiment was far from her strong suit, and the last thing Isaac wanted to do was force her into opening up too much, too fast, too soon. Instead, he just tried to hide the thoughts working overtime behind his eyes and took the water that she shoved into his hands. "Thanks," he said, a touch of wistfulness in his voice.

Ruby braced herself for questions or sentiment or something, but all Isaac said was a wistful little "Thanks" as she handed him a glass. That wasn't what she'd expected. She'd been counting on Isaac to take the lead on this hard, emotional conversation. Those weren't exactly her strong suit. But that wouldn't work, would it? It was Ruby's grief, her burden to bear. Isaac couldn't take the lead on something like that.

[break][break]Dammit, he could at least give her something to work with, though! He looked like he was thinking something, but for once in his life, he was quiet about it.

[break][break]Frowning, Ruby sat back on the couch and let her head fall back, squashing her messy ponytail between herself and the cushions. Well, shit. What was she supposed to say now? She'd implied she was going to tell Isaac what had gotten her so out of sorts, but without anything to bounce off of, she didn't know how to start. She took a long drink of her water, wondering for a moment if having something stronger would loosen her up.

[break][break]No, dammit, she wasn't going to think like that. That was how you became her mother.

[break][break]"So I went to space." The words came out of her mouth almost as a way of shooing away her thoughts. "Where the hell were you?" After all, during their little ice-cream outing with Aurelie Lefevre, he'd mentioned wanting to sign up for that.

While they'd been able to vote on the whole proceeding, that didn't translate into actual action in the slightest.[break][break]

"Wish I could've been there. Though from what I hear, it got way hairier than just you guys and Walsh's snorting rocks." Sometimes, it felt like treating the whole war as one madman's quest for space cocaine was the only thing stopping the horror of it all from consuming Isaac.[break][break]

What else could he do but flop on the couch next to Ruby? The two of them probably looked like a pair of burnouts right now. In some ways, wasn't that exactly what they were?[break][break]

"I got sent to Pyre. Where I had the worst day of my life."[break][break]

As soon as the words slipped, he winced. Ugh. No. This wasn't his place to whine. This was about Ruby. She needed the support right now, not somebody else's bullshit to further burden her down. He clamped down on his tongue, hushing up until he could get some manner of reaction out of his long-suffering friend.[break][break]

Maybe they were psychics back at the ice cream parlor. War really is hell.

"I'm not. kepler brueshaber hired me to be his bodyguard. Trust me, there are a million places I would have rather been." Like safe in a bunker with her sister. Was that cowardly? Maybe. Would Cerberus still be alive if she'd done that? Definitely. Some things weren't worth clinging to her pride over. She just wished she hadn't learned that the hard way.

[break][break]She scoffed when Isaac said things had gotten "hairier." She couldn't even laugh at his "snorting rocks" comment. "That's putting it lightly." She took another gulp of her water. It didn't help much, minus the usual "hydration is good for you" thing. Whoop-de-doo.

[break][break]Her eyes darted over to Isaac at his last statement, though her head remained still. Shit, it sounded like he'd been through the wringer, too. A sick part of Ruby was grateful that she wasn't the only one who'd had a bad time of it. She'd already known that, though. She'd watched kepler brueshaber's Dragapult disintegrate at the hands of the meteoroid's Deoxys and heard Andrea Vaneau desperate cry for her own fallen Pokémon. Having it be someone she knew well was different, though. Especially when it was someone she trusted so much.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac would had commented on Ruby getting that cash, but the fact that she couldn't be in less of a joking mood if she tried made Isaac clamp down on his tongue. As much as teasing was back on the table, there was still a time and a place, and they were rapidly heading away from those.[break][break]

Instead, he found himself focusing on the last comment Ruby made. "You too, huh?" In a way, it was comforting that Isaac wasn't the only one to have an atrocious time during the war. In another way, it was heartbreaking that Ruby had to go through the same pain that he had. But how bad could it have been in space? It wasn't like the League had marked it off as a warzone, right? So what were the chances that any of her Pokemon had-[break][break]

He thought back to the picture of her Houndoom, set up almost like a memorial. Maybe their days were exactly as similar as he feared.[break][break]

"Yeah," he finally said, after being lost for words for longer than he'd hoped. "I mean. It's not like my eyeball just got up and walked away, right?" He couldn't even manage a laugh at his own pathetic attempt at a joke. He couldn't even manage to groan at how lame it was. He only felt a numb chill through his body.[break][break]

"We don't have to talk about what happened if you don't want to, you know," he said, a weak smile on his face. "But . . . I'm here. For what it's worth."

Ruby had figured that Isaac's missing eye was related to the worst day of his life on Mt. Pyre. Like he'd said, eyeballs didn't just get up and walk away. She, too, couldn't laugh at Isaac's lame attempt as a joke, not even at his expense. All that bubbled from her throat was a short "Mm."

[break][break]She let her head turn toward the memorial she'd set up. "Think you can guess what happened," she muttered. "You may be... well, you, but you're perceptive." Arceus, she didn't even have it in her to call him a clown. Looking at that photo again made her feel numb, but she couldn't tear her eyes from it. They'd been so cute back then. Part of her wanted to bottle up that moment and live in it forever. Another part of her wanted to go back in time and tell her it was a stupid idea to get so comfortable in a "normal" life. She'd never get something like that, not without having it ripped away from her, taking part of her with it.

[break][break]"Cerb was supposed to be a service Pokémon." She didn't know why she was saying this, but she couldn't stop the words from being spoken. It felt like she wasn't even speaking to Isaac but to the picture itself. "But he was a stubborn lil' shit. Always wanted to do things his way. Never listened to what the trainers tried to tell him. We tried battling with him instead, and he was a natural. Tough and clever but still stubborn as hell. I figured he'd make a good guard dog, so I offered to take him in. And he was stubborn 'til the very end."

[break][break]She still remembered the look he'd given her before he was frozen solid. That determination, that love, that regret that he couldn't do better for her... It hurt in a way that not even her nail bat could hurt someone, but she didn't want to let go of it, and she didn't know why.

"Personal."[break][break]

He could understand why Ruby couldn't take her eye off. Isaac couldn't even think of passing Route 122 without stopping at Mt. Pyre to visit Kiryu's grave. Whether he was just surfing by from one town to the next or embarking on a mission to the Border of life and death was no matter. He passes the route. He visits the grave. And each week, he made sure to bring fresh flowers, even in this unseasonal cold snap.[break][break]

A part of Isaac wanted to gently set a hand on Ruby's shoulder, show her that she wasn't alone. Another part of him didn't want to disturb her in even the slightest during her opening up. He simply stood there, listening as she spoke. Cerb was stubborn little shit who always did things their way, and would never bend the knee for authority. "He sure sounds like someone I know," Isaac said, the smile on his face soft. "In the best possible way." Tough, clever, stubborn as hell? That was just all the more proof.[break][break]

He knew thinking about it would be agony, but he wanted Ruby to see that Cerberus was such a good Pokemon in large part due to her care and dedication towards him.[break][break]

"I wish I could say I raised mine like that. But Kiryu's been there long before I was. I'm pretty sure she held me back while I was a baby," Isaac said, letting out a weary laugh. "She wasn't mine. But she was in the family- no, she pretty much was family. And when I ran away from home, she was right there by my side, even if it meant she was a runaway too."[break][break]

"She tried to protect me." No. That was selling it short. "She did protect me. But it was at the cost of her life. Hell . . ."[break][break]

"In a fucked up way, it kinda feels like I'm the one that killed her."

At first, Ruby didn't respond to Isaac's declaration of respect. She should have known that Isaac, of all people, would be like that, but she still wasn't used to that sort of treatment. After a few seconds, she just shrugged and said, "Yeah."

[break][break]Without even looking back at him, Ruby let her hand fall back for a light punch to Isaac's general upper arm/shoulder area. There was no real force behind it, but, Ruby being Ruby, it probably still stung a bit. "Shut up." Her voice was uncharacteristically quiet, and if Isaac looked closely, he might have been able to see her cheeks flex in a momentary smile.

[break][break]Then it was Isaac's turn to talk, to share his own pain from that damned day. One of his own Pokémon, practically a family member, had died to protect him. And Isaac felt like he'd killed her because of it.

[break][break]"Bullshit," Ruby said immediately, actually turning to look at Isaac now. "You didn't kill her. The bastard who tried to kill you did."

"It was a sniper." To this day, Isaac had no idea what they looked like or even sounded like. All he remembered was impotently screaming at a lone gunman through the fog. "Aggron are like living tanks. She would've been fine. I probably would've, too. But she didn't want to settle for fine and probably. She needed to be sure. She wanted to be more than she was. In her eyes, it was the only way."[break][break]

He could still remember it all so clearly. His stomach twisted itself into knot after knot, like a balloon animal in a nightmare circus. "She got hit right before stone turned to steel, right when she was at her weakest. And she only ended up that way because she wanted to push past every limit for me."[break][break]

It was starting to sound familiar now. How often did he go the extra mile for others, only to find the pressure crushing him where he was at his most fragile?[break][break]

He laughed ruefully as his attempts at transcending his limits only made them all the more apparent. "Guess she really rubbed off on me, huh?"

Dammit, she apparently hadn't gotten her message across clearly enough. Before she could try to clear it up, Isaac clarified what exactly had happened. She didn't quite understand what he meant by "She wanted to be more than she was," but then she remembered Cerberus's own Mega Evolution. It hadn't been enough for him, and it had been Kiryu's downfall. What a bunch of bullshit. Wasn't Mega Evolution supposed to be an expression of power born from the bond between trainer and Pokémon or something? Some good that had done Ruby and Isaac.

[break][break]For once, the thought of Isaac being himself—in this case, pushing past his limits for the people he cared about—made Ruby's stomach turn. A living tank had died protecting him. Ruby could imagine Isaac doing the same for someone else.

[break][break]"Yeah," Ruby croaked out. "She really did."

[break][break]She gulped down the rest of her water like she was dying of thirst in the middle of the desert, trying to push down the bile she could feel bubbling up inside of her. It helped steady her voice.

[break][break]"My point is, don't go blaming yourself for what happened. It was Kiryu's choice to do what she did. It was the damn sniper who put a bullet in her. It was Walsh who made us do this fucked-up operation."

[break][break]It was Kepler who'd hired Ruby to serve as his bodyguard on Meteno. It was Kyurem who'd broken through reality itself and created the frozen graveyard in which Cerberus would forever stand. There were plenty of people to blame for what had been lost that day. Anything to keep her from blaming herself for getting involved in all this madness.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Ruby was right. As much as Kiryu had become damn near a saint in Isaac's eyes, it was ultimately her choice to try and take the bullet. It was her choice to try and Mega Evolve, despite being more than capable of taking a bullet in her normal form. It was her choice to even follow Isaac into this life in the first place, when she could've just walked away.[break][break]

"You're right. One person making one choice, getting all the blame . . . it's never that easy, is it?" If it was that easy, Isaac wouldn't have been in Rocket in the first place. He could've just said "this sucks" and hit the bricks. Yet here he was, wrestling with guilt that only intensified as the year rolled on.[break][break]

A weary smile spread across Isaac's face, even in the face of everything. "I'm always gonna feel responsible. At least in part," Isaac admitted. "But . . . thanks for calling me out on my bull. I think we all need our heads pulled out of our asses once in a while."[break][break]

He shot Ruby a somewhat pointed look. "So, that means you're not gonna go taking all the blame for what happened either, right?"

"If it was, it'd be easier to know who to punch in the damn face." The words came out quieter than her previous ones, almost as if they weren't fully meant for this conversation.

[break][break]The tiniest hint of a smile tugged at one corner of Ruby's mouth. "Yeah, no kidding." It was a combination of an unspoken "You're welcome" and her understanding that she, too, had needed her head pulled out. Arceus, she'd been pathetic for the past couple of months. She needed to snap out of it.

[break][break]His question had her rolling her eyes. "Psh, that'd be fucking stupid. I'm not gonna punch myself in the face."

[break][break]Saying it out loud like that helped a bit. Yeah, it had been Ruby's choice to run right into Team Rocket's clutches after her family fell apart, but she hadn't been the one to launch that insane mission into the atmosphere, and she hadn't been the one to rip through the fabric of space-time and freeze everything over. Nor had she been the one to stand boldly against such colossal power to protect someone she loved.
