THE ULTRA PLANT IS A DARK WORLD that is wracked by frequent thunderstorms. Lightning spears the desolate canyons and valleys of this world and massive cord-like structures bridge the gaps. Whenever lightning strikes, lights attached to these cords light up too. In the horizon, large Xurkitree can be seen, dwarfing the area you arrive in...[break][break]

Several abandoned power stations can be found throughout the area, but they seem to be deactivated...

THE ABUNDANCE OF ULTRA BEASTS WON’T CATCH THEM BY SURPRISE THIS TIME AROUND. they seem less common now that they aren’t sprouting out of the woodworks. with little understanding of this world, much less how it works, fernando can’t ascertain as to the why.

perhaps it is the SILVALLY he brings along this time. the beast seems to be constantly on edge. undoubtedly overstimulated by the saturation of ultra beast that remain here, despite their proximity. weighing its reaction feigns an assurance that they can avoid a cluster by working around it.

boom!

THUNDER rains all around them. this time, their predator proves to be nature itself. an electrical storm surges illuminates the black and grey skies. the way the ground starts to split into fissures creates an ELECTRIC TERRAIN that threatens to gnaw on anyone unlucky enough to stray into an unlucky spot.

God, this was a bad idea.

When JAMES BAKER first mentioned trudging out into a foreign, undocumented realm with a gaggle of important people to boot, Rory had thought hell no. No fucking way. But then she looked back up at him and recalled her friend of a friend of a friend who'd originally introduced them, and how if she ever wanted to put her degree to use outside of rocket, it'd be through meaningful connections like this.

With her Mawile stationed right beside her, the budding engineer kept to the rear of the group, head buried behind the staggeringly tall bodies of her group mates.

Whenever lightning struck, she'd make a small hop. Again and again, until one hop, in particular, forced her chin to jut upright at just the right moment, where when she looked up, the world around them sparked to life.

"Wow." She found herself in awe. The thunder hadn't been what she expected -- it was raw power, fueled by a keg of foreign electricity, maybe siphoned out from the dangling beast trampling near the world's horizon. "You said you all were here before, right?" Glancing over at JAMES BAKER , the woman's voice attempted to carry itself through the arcs of electricity. A difficult feat to accomplish. "What did you see? Beyond this?"

"holy shit. i have an idea on how to power up the station."[break][break]

he claps his hands together, then quickly looks at Rory Faust because she had asked a question.[break][break]

"sorry! yeah we didn't see much last time. we made it into one of the power stations before being chased away by a gargantuan electric pokemon."[break][break]

Much like FERNANDO SILPH, Katherine's done her due diligence and prepared for their second expedition by bringing a more suitable partner. Her Alolan Marowak stands tall and proud, brandishing its bone in a constant twirl. Its LIGHTNING ROD is an assurance against certain unwanted visitors.

"It sounds stupidly dangerous," Katherine provides her unsolicited advice, "that thing is huge, James. And for all we know, it might also be surrounded by a pack of other Ultra Beasts." She was no engineer, but she knew reckless ideas like the back of her hand.

Another THUNDER curves in the air to strike her Pokemon, which remains unaffected. She breathes then, seemingly unphased by the erratic weather, "We can try to pull that off, but we can't risk being spotted by any Ultra Beasts. We'd have to use a bait-- Pokemon, I mean."

there are too many variables at play to risk the whole party—namely himself but the sentiment applies across the board. fernando can feel his nose wrinkle at the mere thought, sheltered under the patchy roof of their abandoned station.

however, he knows better than to abstain from the group’s decision. for no matter how much he disapproves, that won’t stop the determined. whatever hold he has on them back in hoenn means nothing in the moment. weighing this, his best option is to deflect.

to postpone as their time in this dimension ticks away.

"Ah."

So, there were multiple stations around here. Not just the one. And they were all abandoned? Rory couldn't wrap her head around it. But she didn't need to -- that wasn't her job today.

The mention of Xurkitree forced down a heavy gulp.

"Um," she stammered, hands fidgeting along her tool kit. The cool metal was the only things grounding her here, in the world of electricity and beasts. "It could work, yes. But..."

Her hesitancy was almost immediately addressed by the elite four woman, Katherine Fairburne , but then quickly dismissed after.

"If the generator is down, then I guess we could essentially use a high-voltage, indirect attack to power up the transmission lines."

A pause. A breath. A push forward.

"But that'll be the trick. It'll have to be high-voltage AND indirect. By skipping the transformer, there's no way to mitigate losses of voltage, so we'll need enough to overcome that."

From there, she could manage any difficulties due to miswiring or the like. It wouldn't be an easy task, especially with thunder spearing the ground the way it has been since their arrival, but as with the other crazy idea they were propagating, it was still feasible.

"Cables?"

The mention piqued her interest. Squeezing through JAMES BAKER and Katherine Fairburne , the young engineer craned her head up to meet the man's gaze, blinked, then offered a crooked smile.

"May I?"

When the cool rubber wires graced her skin, recognition was almost immediate. She gave them one long look just to confirm her thoughts, though.

"Oh, oh, oh! This is a linking cord. They're pretty universal, but this one looks similar to what you'd see with those automatic doors. You know, like the ones that just open and close on its own. If we could link it to one of these deactivated doors," she gestured to the closest one within their vicinity, "maybe we can force them back open."

it seems their debate is for nothing in the end as another XURKITREE floats overhead, still and quiet until it's very quickly not.[break][break]

Katherine'd almost forgotten about the cables.

Scarlet eyes shift between Fernando to James and Rory, searching for confirmation from either of the two as to whether the cables alone will suffice. Shortly after James declares that this is their sole solution, a disappointed sigh parts through pursed lips. The Malevolent may be annoyed, but she lacks the credentials and knowledge to challenge the AEOS scientist's word.

Not to mention, another Xurkitree makes an appearance, leaving them with little choice but to follow the original plan. With a huff, Katherine gestures for her Marowak to hurl its SHADOW BONE at the Ultra Beast, aiding the Zygarde with its assault. "It's likely under the effects of MAGNET RISE. Don't bother with any ground-type moves," a simple instruction, she hopes.

for the league’s selection is vast and powerful. the likes of kyle lopez, Callan Young, and Melody Miro are at their disposal. instead, he and katherine invest in skills they do not possess. a niche that extends beyond the typical standard of pokemom battling.

an expertise that proves essential in this foreign world.

“rks system activate!”

the verbal command causes the silvally frenzy. it charges forward, colors ever shifting as the downloaded MEMORIES swap back and forth. eventually, they settling into a teal that represents its draconic strength.

from the opposite end of katherine’s SHADOW BONE, the pokemon leaps, covered in the aura of its MULTI-ATTACK.

Rory's eyes widened.

All at once, a bundle of trust had been pushed onto her. Trust in their lives, in the mission, in the future of their discoveries. Palms sweating, her breathing became shallow. There was no room for failure here.

"Okay...!"

Balancing off the balls of her heels, she spun back around to where the entrance of the power station laid, linking cables in hand, and immediately went to work at it. Piece by piece, her nimble fingers connected one cord to another, repairing what was lost to time and decay.

the two scientists move in sync. where Rory Faust heads over to the entrance to utilize the LINKING CORD, james moves to where he assumes the generator to be, and after a quick scan of the equipment, he confirms that the machine before him is in fact the generator.[break][break]

with a grunt, he pulls off sections of it to expose its wiring. with enough of it now susceptible, he calls out to the zygarde.[break][break]

"zygarde! over here!"[break][break]

the ground-type barks, leaping to take a stray THUNDER from the XURKITREE. with electricity coursing through it, it leaps and slams into the generator. the impact isn't what jumpstarts it but the THUNDER is enough.[break][break]

the generator rumbles, shaking as it comes back to life. the lights above them flick on as the rest of the machinery starts up.[break][break]

"nice!"[break][break]

The SHADOW BONE only manages to irritate the Xurkitree. However, the draconic MULTI-ATTACK proves threatening enough for the Ultra Beast, coercing it to add more oomph to its attacks. What was once a simple THUNDER evolves into a shower of rapid ZAP CANNONS, each one threatening to paralyze pokemon and humans alike.

Fortunately, where Katherine's Marowak lacks strength, it makes up for in utility. The LIGHTNING ROD is ever so active, drawing one ZAP CANNON after another, protecting the party from the enraged Ultra Beast's fury.

THE BATTLE REMAINS CONTROLLED. hoenn’s elite four and gym leader are more than enough to keep a single ULTRA BEAST at bay. but the promise of only a single opponent never lasts long. their luck so far has been predetermined by their constant moving. now that they’ve become stationary, it’s only a matter of time before more burst out of the seams.

the hum of the power station coming back online bodes them well but it ushers in another drawl of the constant ELECTRIC STORM. lightning blinds all before the grey sky returns. shortly after, the crack of THUNDER deafens all.

fernando holds one hand against his ear as he tries to hear his own shout.

“when you get it open, we move during the lightning flash.”

his silvally’s U-TURN from behind provides a meaningful enough distraction. the last thing the xurkitree will sense is the artificial beast attacking from outside the power station. only to disappear the moment the lightning dies down.

fernando too becomes a mere shadow among the broken debris of this abandoned civilization.
