Stifling a yawn, Lam rolls his head from side to side. “Thanks! Hopefully lined up to try for another one soon.”[break][break]

He doesn’t know whether he should be relieved or not that, as of yet, Matias hasn’t stopped by his workplace with a bone to pick with his boss. Something he has a feeling probably won’t be too pretty.[break][break]

The distraction of training is a double-edged sword— it puts off a potential confrontation and he needs said training. But at the same time…it’s so early.[break][break]

Lam would like to go back to bed.[break][break]

Still, he laughs despite rubbing at tired eyes. “No way, I got a good while before that.” His arms stretch up over his head, fingers linking together. “What’re we doing today, anyway?”

it does not take much to realize a fight between matias and anyone would not end well. he will brawl and scrap and walk away bloody if need be. but with lam's boss? it likely will not be bloody. messy, though, most likely.[break][break]

"training. real training. not the kind you do in the gym or with other trainers."[break][break]

he's more blunt than normal, setting the tone for the day.[break][break]

Of course, he doesn’t expect Matias to fist fighting his boss. She’s a tiny, angry lady that uses a lot of words like gauche and nouveau, so really it would just be a verbal smackdown – winner debatable.[break][break]

But obviously that is not what Matias currently has on his mind, or his agenda, for today.[break][break]

“Wha..” His head tilts, not really comprehending what that could mean. “Real training?”[break][break]

He’s not used to survivalist methods. Sure, he could hold his own on, like, a camping excursion. He’s capable of being outdoorsy enough. The somber tone his friend takes, however, tells him that he means something different. Comparatively, his life in Alola up until now, while not extravagant, has probably been a bit cushy.[break][break]

Safe.[break][break]

He blinks several times. “Will I..?” Where? When? He’s kept out of trouble thus far, anyway.[break][break]

Lam shakes his head and relents, then rolls his shoulders to stretch them out. “Okay, alright. I’m awake.” Not really, but something told him he’d be forced into alertness in mere moments.

it's a wonder how lam has managed to avoid trouble thus far. hasn't he been here for months? what was he doing when the meteor was barreling towards them? he wonders.[break][break]

he pulls out a single pokeball and from it comes his baxcalibur. it blinks, adjusting to the brightness of the day before turning to look at lam.[break][break]

“Guess I can’t argue with that.”[break][break]

Naturally, he was in a state of hiding like most other civilians when the risk of meteor impact was imminent. The training didn’t start until after. Part of it felt like a need to find purpose, though maybe that was more for Ikarus Rook.[break][break]

For Lam, it was born of a need to feel capable. He wasn’t a difficult or complicated person. But he didn’t at all enjoy feeling useless. Helpless.[break][break]

He looks at the baxcalibur, then down at the pokeball in his hand. Well…at least she’s got a bag of tricks. And if those don’t work, well then they’ll train more.[break][break]

Out comes his pidove. Size isn’t everything.[break][break]

Unless the dragon starts taking swipes at him. Then he might be screwed.

the baxcalibur had been a gift from the prince of galar, Remiel Calcifet. it is treated with fondness as it fills the void made when fern delaney snatched away his frigibax from right out underneath him. he still thinks of the incident to this day.[break][break]

Poppy lands on his forearm. A curled finger hooks underneath her beak to give the downy feathers a scratch. “Yep! She’s a special one.”[break][break]

And not just because of the gray-blue shine of her feathers.[break][break]

Lam looks up at the baxcalibur and smiles. “Pretty dragon, though.” Big dragon. It might look to swat his pidove right out of the air, and maybe her attacks won’t make much of a dent, but he’s curious.[break][break]

And he’s never enjoyed being underestimated.

it's almost too easy for matias to underestimate the pidove. he does so without a care in the world, actually. if he's wrong, he'll accept it and move on. and if he's right, it'll just be like any other day as matias is always right.[break][break]

his tone isn't cold, more so stern than anything. like a commander on a battlefield.[break][break]

Despite the baxcalibur’s LEERING, Poppy remains unfazed. She flutters into the air, BIG PECKS rendering the dragon’s efforts to cut through her mental defenses null. Trilling, she flits around the much larger Pokémon— like an annoying gnat you swat at, but remains just out of reach.[break][break]

Normally, he might waste time building to a twist. Play at something typically expected of a pidove, but given the point Matias makes about the training, and the significant size disparity, they’ll start a little more straight forward. “Alright Pops, light ‘em up!”[break][break]

She tilts downward from the air above, unleashing a heavy, humid HEAT WAVE at the ice-type.

baxcalibur stands its ground, hefty feet digging into the earth to brace itself against the HEAT WAVE. its dragon-typing renders the move less effective than it normally would've been, and it's why it's able to rush forward without much resistance.[break][break]

it swipes its AQUA TAIL at the pidove, looking to knock it out of the way.[break][break]

"that's a strong bird for its size."[break][break]

but is it strong enough?[break][break]

"Yep! Expect the unexpected!" That was his whole point in teaching her the moveset she currently has. Or well, they're working on that. It's tedious, but she packs much more of a punch than a normal pidove should. They haven't fully been able to test this out yet, so here goes nothing?[break][break]

Well he certainly hopes she's strong enough. Twisting through the air, a RAZOR WIND cuts through the lash of water from the baxcalibur's AQUA TAIL.[break][break]

It's no more than a measure to propel the pidove away before she goes hurtling toward the larger pokemon again. Energy charging up around her as she swings back in, body used as a DRAGON HAMMER on attempted impact.

the pidove definitely pacts more of a punch than they expected it to which is a testament to lam's abilities as a trainer, no doubt. it is something matias catches and will proceed to prod at later when their battle is over.[break][break]

the DRAGON HAMMER catches both baxcalibur and matias off guard. he laughs at the sight of it, at how a tiny bird manages to knock a mighty dragon back.[break][break]

injured but not out, baxcalibur rushes back forward, this time throwing a controlled ICE FANG not at the pidove, but at lam.[break][break]

hopefully, its ICE BODY slows down pidove enough.[break][break]

Focused on what they were doing, he doesn’t anticipate the attack to be leveled at him, though he probably should have. It comes to him a beat too late that again, this is survival training.[break][break]

It still catches him by the leg as he tries to dive out of the way, earning a yelped curse from Lam.[break][break]

Another HEAT WAVE rolls from the pidove, as she collides with the baxcalibur’s hardened ICE BODY. She still lets out a strangled chirp with the, impact—it’s almost more like a splat, honestly.[break][break]

Regardless, she flutters back, attempting to put space between them again. Twisting around, Lam backs himself up and slaps at another pokeball on his belt, releasing his altaria. “No pulling punches!”[break][break]

Mallow promptly responds with a shrill, DISARMING VOICE.[break][break]

Two against hardly feels fair, but then again, neither does getting a blast of ice to the leg, so he figured it’ll pan out.
