well, she's certainly not going to try to show anything off with maugrim. all the rambunctious pup will do is piss her or dad off, and she's not really sure which would be worse. (kolya, definitely.)

the wyrdeer looks back at her trainer and stamps when kolya releases his aggron. she hasn't been on this field since she was a stantler, but the turf is still familiar. she'd trained hard those years at the academy; her evolution and lean muscles show as much. kolya's aggron is a frightful thing (not that that had stopped little sasky from trying to dress him up as a princess once) and both know better to underestimate them.

it will be a tough battle, but "we've got this, kirin! give us some advantage."

she stands her ground, forelegs splayed, spine arcing down as her horns begin to glow. waves of dark energy ripple towards the aggron.

CONFUSE RAY was a good choice. The pulses of energy hit Aggron with pinpoint accuracy, muddling his mind. He roared in frustration, recognizing the condition but unable to do anything about it.[break][break]

"Stay calm, Aggron," Nikolaj called out, his voice steady.[break][break]

The hulking Pokémon snorted and shook his head. Then he raised his arms and let out a another earth-shaking roar. Rocks from all around the field, from small pebbles to fist-sized stones, flew through the air as Aggron used ROCK SLIDE.[break][break]

But would they hit Kirin? Or would he hurt himself in his confused state?[break][break]

when the confuse ray hits, kirin does a bit of a victory trot in place. sasky laughs delightedly but claps her hands together to get kirin to focus. one good start doesn't mean their luck is going to hold. and if they're going to chip away at kolya's aggron, they're going to need to be able to withstand it.

"use psyshield bash!" aggron is looking woozy and there's a chance it will be able to pull through, but sasky is banking on it not.

psychic energy echoes from kirin's hooves as they pound against the ground, swathing her in a defensive energy. she tucks her head and rams into the aggron, taking the advantage as its own attack turns against it.

Aggron stumbled backward under the force of the PSYSHIELD BASH but quickly caught himself, digging his wide feet into the earth. Shaking his head furiously, he grabbed the Wyrdeer's antlers. Then, with a twist of his massive body, he attempted to attack back with DOUBLE-EDGE.[break][break]

Thankfully, Aggron seemed to snap out of his confusion in the nick of time. He slammed Kirin into the ground, protected from the recoil of the attack thanks to his ROCK HEAD.[break][break]

"Good job, Aggron," Nikolaj called out, remaining calm. Inwardly, he was glad that his Pokémon had managed to overcome his condition so quickly.

and just like that, they lose their edge. that toothy grin of hers deflates when aggron trudges through the confusion and grips kirin by her horns. she bucks, panicking, in response, and the turf puffs, spraying dirt as she's forced into the ground.

the last pink tendrils that had been surrounding her evaporate as she struggles to keep her focus. saskia paralyzes, the word hypnosis on the tip of her tongue, but kirin's not in the proper state of mind to focus on a move like that.

she needs distance from the hulking form above her.

"kirin, calm down! get out of there!" widened eyes narrow. a frustrated snort leaves the deer as she scrabbles back to her hooves and collects herself.

Nikolaj watched the Wyrdeer scramble backward and the smile fall from his daughter's face. He hated to see her joy falter, but more than that, he hated the thought of Saskia losing to someone who intended to harm her. And now that she was back in Hoenn as an active Ranger, she might encounter those circumstances in the future.[break][break]

That was why practice battles such as this one were so important.[break][break]

Though Aggron were known for their physical toughness, against a Psychic-type's special attacks, they were more vulnerable. Nikolaj knew the most surefire path to victory was to take down Kirin as quickly as possible.[break][break]

Aggron knew this, too. The old Pokémon had survived the snows of Sinnoh with his master for years before coming to Hoenn. Without requiring Nikolaj's command, he charged Kirin to take her down with IRON HEAD.

her psychic prowess is her edge. in a close quarters fight like this, she needs to end battles against larger adversaries quickly. sasky realizes her mistake only after the fact; letting her get so close to aggron has worn her out and she's not fast enough to scramble away from the pinpoint accuracy of her father's partner.

the metal helmet rams into kirin's side and knocks her off her feet. she slumps, the breath and what was left of her fight knocked out of her.

saskia rushes over to her, knowing full well the big metal beast would never harm her, and kneels down to stroke her cheeks.

"you did well, girl. i should have done better." she draws out kirin's ball and returns her.

"one day we'll beat you, aggron," she says with a smile and looks past him at nikolaj. "thought i had you there for a second!"
