As Remiel is peppered with spores, Madd and Yakky visibly recoil. The woman draws her jacket around her torso like leather is an antidote for chest bursters. Hanging back, the redhead gives the guy a moment to catch up. “Be sure to burn those, bud.” The woman murmurs. “The last thing Hoenn needs is monster plants.” Sanctioned terrorists, extraterrestrial visitors, and mad gods seemed like quite enough—thanks.

About the time the Garchomp stiffens, Yakuza does the same. His red eyes narrow, a deep rumbling coming from his normally jovial chest. “There is not anywhere to retreat to.” After an initial moment of panic, Madeline forces herself to relax. Running around like an idiot wouldn’t help anybody. Amber eyes shift to the woman behind her, noting that more of the origami creatures are appearing. “Yakky, can you give us an Obstruct?” The Obstagoon nods, crossing his arms.

Making sure Blue is behind her, the redhead throws a glance toward the other three. Shit. What the fuck do I do? As her head turns back, it catches on something white in the grass. A dead Kartana is visible beneath the foliage, its paper self wearing away with time. Atop of that is a familiar piece of fabric. A hat covered in pins from bands she knew. One that belonged to the asshole who’d mentored her in Old Rocket. Amber eyes narrowed, her gaze flickering down to his belt. “Cover me!” Though shouted at Without thinking, she dashes across the field of baby Celesteela. Her boots leave divots in the moist soil.

Ew! Dead body. Dead body. Holding her breath—and turning to the side—Madeline peels the belt off the guy’s torso as the blades close in. Sure, the guy was a Grade-A dick, but he had plenty of firepower. And, if she was a betting woman, she’d bet those Pokemon of his didn’t appreciate what happened. Acting like she held a case of grenades, Madd lobbed them at the approaching Ultra Beasts.

From the balls, six very angry Pokemon erupted.

Remiel is shocked, but there isn't enough time to investigate what (or whom) had alerted the KARTANA to their presence. In a moment, the group is ambushed from all sides and forced to brace themselves against the inevitable attack. Thankfully, the others are quick to counter as he removes the last of the parasitic seeds from his arm.

Damkina, in the meantime, takes a defensive stance in front of her master and roars. A glittering light emerges from the MEGA STONE on her collar as her will syncs with that of her master and his MEGA BRACELET. Then, in one glorious burst of power, she undergoes MEGA EVOLUTION.

Despite being pushed back by the wave of energy prior, the swarm of Kartana sweep back in like an unrelenting wave as they attack his twin-scythed dragon. Despite suffering some damage, however, the ferocious beast fights them back with a wild dance of slashes before summoning large spikes of rock from the earth below to form a path (STONE EDGE).

"This way!" Remiel urges the others, briefly noting what appeared to be a corpse nearby before Madeline McKenna summoned a flurry of startled Pokémon. Whether or not they belonged to her, however, they proved to be effective in drawing the Kartana's attention away for the time being.

Some of the pokemon released by Madds scatter, leaving small windows for them to dart through while the kartana are distracted if they're quick enough to seize the opportunity. Her tongue clicks in command to her lucario, and it's as she had previously instructed him - the jackal bursts forward, METEOR MASH sending some of the nearby, smaller kartana propelling in opposite directions as they're thrown back by the force.[break][break]

The pair follows the gap further opened by the garchomp's STONE EDGE. As they go, her lucario steps up alongside ALEXANDER STONE's gallade, ready to further assist pushing any pursuing kartana back.[break][break]

The sooner they're outta here, the better. She might be grumbling as she continues to pick at the few remaining leech seeds stuck to her clothing. Good riddance.[break][break]

For two of the new recruits, the rage wasn’t enough for a suicide mission. This pair of yellow bellies fled, drawing the attention of a few origami hellions. This drew a shrug from the redhead. It wasn’t like the decision was a bad one. The other four Pokemon—perhaps angry at being imprisoned for Aceus knew how long—threw themselves wholly into the fray.

Even Yakuza lobbed some shadow balls at the paper mache demons as the human quartet pushed their way through the mob. On their way, a tuft of an unnatural green caught amber eyes. Swearing under her breath, the redhead turned to rush towards it. In the process, she tripped over one of the bulbs littering the ground. Her carrying container dropped to the ground. “Shit!”

That money would be enough to get a new box spring! And she didn’t have to steal or punch anyone to get it. With a mutter, Madd followed it. After a few minutes of digging in the dirt, she managed to get a grip on it. dropped the vial to the ground, Madeline clambered for it in the dusty soil. Even in the flurry of blades, her heart was surprisingly calm. Partially because death didn’t scare her much—it happened to everyone—but mostly because her trust in Yakky was absolute. And, judging by the fact that nothing touched her, that faith was well placed.

With that process done, she rushed to catch up to Blue and the rest of the party. Behind them, the sky exploded with rays and attacks of a dozen different colors. It’d be cool if it wasn’t so dangerous.

Madd watched as one of her old mentor’s Pokemon took flight with a ball of struggling paper clutched tight in its deadly claws. Even if she felt like a dick for leaving them behind, they had a better chance at something here and not in their balls.

Dabbing at a small cut on her upper arm, Madd turned her attention to the present. “Here’s hoping they make it out okay.”

It was time to leave the realm of the Ultra Crater. Having attracted the attention of the Kartana was bad enough. And, though he didn't care to worry his group with any mention of it, Remiel was wary that they might also come to attract the attention of the GARGANTUAN CENTISKORCH he'd witnessed during his last exploration here.

Regardless, the archaeologist was confident his Mega Garchomp would reliably cover their flank as they made their escape. Catching the sight of a lingering Leech Seed on blue murtagh 's shoulder, he reaches out to carefully pluck it off before flinging it away with the tip of his nail. "All things considered, I'd say things went pretty well..." He remarks with a nod. "We're all in one piece, after all. Which is more than can be said for others."
