Her hand withdrew from him on reflex as the glass shattered in his literal iron grip.[break][break]

The tinkling sound of splintering crystal scattered across the floor, drawing eyes from those closest to the balcony's double doors. That discordant melody pierced through the heaviness of the councilman's silence, its clear sharpness underscoring the piercing severity of his stare.[break][break]

Unmistakable contempt burned in his eyes, and for the briefest instant, it evoked a glimmer of naked fear in her own.[break][break]

Was this contempt for her? No, she resolved at last, and the tension released from her face and her shoulders with this delayed understanding.[break][break]

His clouded gaze was distant, looking beyond her own -- as if he was looking past her, at something else entirely.[break][break]

"How fortunate then," she said finally, mindful of the invisible needles that littered the ground as she stepped back, "that we are not one another's enemies."[break][break]

He was a minefield of a different sort, though just as difficult to navigate in the darkness.

he echoes, and as if a cold-breeze had just washed over him, his body relaxes ever so slightly. the councilman's gaze falls to his glass, a look of distaste, or even disdain, flashing over regal features. wordlessly he shakes the obsidian limb, traces of champagne littering the balcony's stone.

"accept my apologies. i'm still getting used to the limbs... intricacies."

turning his head slightly, he twitches two of his fingers to a nearby, waiting servant. silent, as to be nearly unseen, they depart to fulfill his request.

meanwhile, gabriel breaks away from their close proximity, moving close to the edge of the balcony. here was a savannah of steel and concrete, of lights and laughter, of endless opportunity. and he saw fit to be its king.

His back now facing her like a wall between them, he stared out over the city as if he ruled it. In a sense, he did, she supposed. The council of Hoenn held so much power over the region in comparison to what she herself felt she possessed in Rocket.[break][break]

Laws and elections enshrined their sovereignty, while in Rocket, all was earned through might, cunning, and bonds of loyalty. How long that power lasted depended on how deftly you understood your place in the organization's hierarchy.[break][break]

"The Ultra Beasts are more frequently viewed in the region, as of late."[break][break]

The soft sound of crunching glass cut through the night as she carefully stepped towards him again, lifting the hem of her red skirt so that it might not carry such glittering shards with its train.[break][break]

When she looked down at the world before them, she didn't feel a monarch overlooking her kingdom. She felt like the foreigner that she was, wondering how long she might be able to make a home for herself here.[break][break]

"they're among us even now, you know. the megalopolans. nearly impossible to tell the difference. they could be delivering your mail, your champagne-" the server seems to freeze in place, fear discernable to the naked eye "-or, perhaps even, be your local florist."

What he said was certainly true. Elisabeth herself had worked alongside the Megalopolans in Littleroot. Borrowed a Nihilego from them, in fact, during the siege of the small town.[break][break]

Her hand delicately took the remaining glass of champagne, depositing her empty flute on the tray with a murmur of appreciation to the spooked server. She waved him away with an airy gesture of her hand, before turning to Gabriel to watch his metallic fist clench and unclench in frustration.[break][break]

An idle sip of champagne filled the beat of their silence.[break][break]

"It feels as if you are about to tell me what sharp teeth I have, Councilman," she said, the lilting tenor of her voice unmistakably teasing.[break][break]

Despite this, her eyes sharpened with an alertness that hadn't been there prior.

Light pollution kept the vista of stars overhead from twinkling at its full cosmic splendour. When she was a girl, the skies over Camphrier Town had seemed almost alive with the magic of the constellations, casting a radiance that only dimmed with age and distance from her childhood home.[break][break]

"Once you know something, you can't unknow it. I think sometimes I miss that ignorance, but not enough to trade my knowledge to return to it. It's a cruel thing, I think, that the path to ownership of one's life is relinquishing one's idealism. Though the argument can be made that idealism is its own cruelty."[break][break]

The golden taste of sparkling champagne met her lips, before a fleeting smile preceded her final thought.[break][break]

"The life of a sheep led to the slaughter is an idyllic one, but in the end, still a slaughter."
