After parting ways with jayden cross, Fern reluctantly returns to their trap laying. As they slink through the sidestreets of Dewford, they lay POISON BARBS along the most likely paths toward the rifts that would take league affiliates to the deep sea, and by effect - to slow the progress of their plans.[break][break]

Couldn't have that, they supposed. The thought had a slight tinge of bitterness, but they figured it would fade once a bit more time had passed from the conversation they'd just exited. All they needed was a bit of conflict to distract them and shake off the slow build of anxiety that rose up they closer they drew to the rifts.[break][break]

Tucking away into a dark corner just beyond where their trap had been laid, Fern waits until a lone shadow strays into their path.[break][break]

"Alright, Nim...looks we've got company," they trill to the typhlosion, waiting in the wings alongside them. In understanding, she flares with heat and flame that's tinged in an eerie, spectral glow--sending forward to the light the dark and surround the figure with the ethereal glow of an INFERNAL PARADE.

"Oh, you better just KILL ME!" Screeched the unfortunate victim as the fiery blaze barreled towards him, right before it seemingly consumed him whole, the man having little time to do more than try and throw his... Military trench coat in front of himself. "AAAUUURGHHH!!!"

As the curtain of fire swallowed him whole, a brief moment passed before a shadowy silhouette broke through the blaze, the familiar shades of Hoenn's military uniform hanging onto seared threads as it clung to crispy hot skin.

Swiftly healing crispy hot skin, the young man's marred face going through a Harvey Dent speedrun, from baby faced to bone and muscle to baby faced again in quick succession, panting furiously the whole time.

"Aaarghhhh...! Hah! Hah...!!! Piss! That bloody hurts!" Hissed the youth with a deeply agonized scowl, teeth clenched so tightly he could almost feel something in his jaw trying to snap. "You son of a gun, that could've been a civilian! You're supposed to pretend to be the good guys!"

The youth palmed a net ball as he came to a stand off with yet another one of Rocket's masked cosplayers, huffing as he narrowed his eyes at the man. He didn't have time for this— after everything that had happened in the town, he HAD to get into the ultra ocean...

But he couldn't let quick trigger psychos like this run amok.

“Oh, would you like that? I could probably arrange it.” They trill back as they step out of the shadows to observe the young man go up in flame. Their nose wrinkles at the smell, the bright blaze quickly overtaking him.[break][break]

And yet he seems to regenerate. Something that gives Fern pause, brows furrowing in puzzlement as they observe. “How strange.” New. Ah, well—they’re not going to let some fancy healing tricks deter their effort.[break][break]

“You son of a gun, that could've been a civilian! You're supposed to pretend to be the good guys!"[break][break]

Fern’s head tilts with false innocence. “Wow, gee! Really?” they reply before their expression shifts to something more exasperated as they sigh. Their smile is a coy thing—all vulpine and shifty. “Well that’s probably why I’m actually more of a son of a bitch than anything else.”[break][break]

(Sorry mam—wherever her poor, dead soul rests.)[break][break]

They shrug, unbothered. “I do my fair share of that. You’ve just caught me in an ill mood.” How strange, though. He certainly is quite sturdy. Fern will give him that much.[break][break]

Their Tera orb slides from pocket to hand, charging up energy—though they don’t unleash it on the typhlosion just yet as Nim opens her maw wide to spew a SHADOW BALL at the youth.

"Yes, really. Y'all clowns love actin' like killin' ain't shit, huh?" Said the youth as he threw his sizzling trench coat away. The person before him was yet another one dismissive of murder, as far as the youth could see.

Quipping and joking and being so, so clever about killing people.

"Funny, funny, funny... Y'all are hilarious." He muttered as he tightened his grip on the pokeball, lip curling.

He spat to the side, his earlier encounter with Kouji Matsubara still fresh in his mind, pumping his blood full of adrenaline and a slow, simmering fury.

"Fine. Be that way; dunno why I ever bother with chatter." He muttered as he saw the Typhlosion open its maw wide, and spew a shadow ball towards him.

With a sharp swing, he sent his pokeball at the floor, releasing a Wigglytuff in its path. The sphere exploded on contact, dissipating harmlessly against its body, even as the puff ball itself seemed to frown and scoff at the attack.

TUFF!

"Mimic!" Doug ordered, to which the Wigglytuff's arms crossed in front of itself as the air shimmered before it, shadows coalescing into a black sphere before it was launched forth towards the Typhlosion, barreling towards it quickly.

Fern sighs, head falling back as if looking up at the sky. “You don’t know the first thing about what I prefer,” they reply simply– a lick of irritation seeping through the cracks of their showboating. He doesn’t know that it’s something Fern has had to grow hardened to, that it doesn’t come naturally.[break][break]

But that’s a weakness they can’t afford to expose. Not with their rank. So that guard shutters back up, and they patch over the cracks. “I am hilarious, though. That’s totally on the money. But oh, snarky banter is so fun.” They sigh forlornly, bordering on a sulk. “But have it your way.”[break][break]

The shadow ball dissipates without harm, much to Fern’s chagrin. How troublesome. Another grin cracks across their face, however.[break][break]

“Aw, pinky is pretty cute.” Fern coos before their head tilts toward the spectral typhlosion. “Take it down.” The tera orb in their hand is finally brandished and activated.[break][break]

Bright white and red light collects around the creature, stamping out the ghost-typing to make way for pure flame. The shimmer of a red and orange crystalline coat over her plum fur catches the light of the dying flames from her earlier infernal parade.

Twisting to the side, Nim takes the mimicked shadow ball on the flank. Skidding back a few steps before thundering forward again, a fiery TERA BLAST unleashed at the wigglytuff in her wake.

"Yeah yeah, do horrible shit and then act like yer above it, I'm well acquainted with the rocket standard." The youth said dismissively at the other's words. "Let's skip the bullshit."

Once they were both done with the banter, the real fight could get underway.

Doug didn't know anything about the man before him; the revolving closet of masks and costumes rocket had recently taken to made it difficult to build a profile on their more notorious members. He would have to play it safe and keep in mind that they were fighting in the Town— couldn't let things get out of hand.

"Stockpile!" He ordered as the opponent's Typhlosion was enveloped in gleaming red crystals. The spanking brand new phenomena of Hoenn; it had been several months now, and Doug still couldn't get used to seeing it.

Loona breathed in sharply and inflated like a balloon as the empowered blazes came barreling at her, the blast exploding on contact and whipping up a cloud of dust. As it slowly dissipated however, it revealed...

A mostly unharmed Wigglytuff.

After a single stockpile? Something didn't add up here...

Behind her, the soldier simply grinned confidently.

"Mimic!" He ordered again, his wigglytuff welling up once more before releasing a concussive terra blast, the lack of typing clear as it barreled towards the Typhlosion.

“Mm, and here you are, thinking you know everything.” Fern sighs forlornly, head lolling to the side as their shoulders slump with an air of dramatism. “So high and mighty.”[break][break]

Banter with this one would go nowhere fun. What a shame.[break][break]

Already, they had grown bored with this particular interaction. They had a designated appointment to make and a mood to build back up between now and then. This wore on their patience.[break][break]

Particularly when the tera blast didn’t seem to bear much impact. Fern frowns, brows knitting together behind the shroud of their mask. How in the world? It was just a normal wigglytuff, as far as they could tell.[break][break]

The narrow streets don’t give the typhlosion much dodging room, and she bellows as the neutral tera blast sends her rolling back. Fern grits their teeth, displeased with the damage dealt to one of their more prized pokemon.[break][break]

She is hardy, though, and the extra layer of protection serves her well.[break][break]

“Hit harder, Nim.” Despite the flourish from before, Fern spoke calm and level. As the typhlosion continues to sparkle with crystalized light and unleashes a powerful LAVA PLUME, Fern begins to look for an exit opening.

"Well gee foxy, if there's something ya wanna share with the class, go ahead and take off the mask." He said, before suddenly chucking a scatterbang into the middle of the field. "Otherwise, get profile'd, ya smarmy ass."

A shrill bang rippled through the field with little forewarning, the ringing sound spreading visible cracks across nearby window panes and throwing those unprepared nearby off.

In the meantime, the youth pointed a finger at the man before him, like a child at the playground.

Only this time, when he mouthed—

"Bang."

Something pink and glowing actually shot out, zooming in towards Fox Mask's chest—!

“Mmmm, no I’ll pass. My generosity’s worn off.”[break][break]

Alarmed by the sudden bang! Fern’s typhlosion darts to the side. They also backstep a few times, but it does little to pull them out of view.[break][break]

The shot came unexpectedly, too quick to duck away from. An attack that makes it mark with dead aim, pain flares from the center of their chest and then curls through them like a sudden, crippling chill. With a yelp, they drop to a knee–hand clawing at their chest as heavy dread thrums through them. “The hell was that?” Asked through gritted teeth.[break][break]

What they should do now is call one of their other pokemon forward for a little vanishing trick. But the unexpected debilitation clouds their quick thinking. Wild eyes rove the area, and land on some townies that emerged from their home to see the cause of their shattered windows.[break][break]

“Rollout!” When they manage to point from where they kneel on the ground, it’s not at the wigglytuff, or even their primary opponent. It’s directed toward the civs, instead.[break][break]

Before she draws back to her trainer’s side, the typhlosion follows the order without hesitation and turns the sudden rolling attack to barrel straight toward the couple.

His shot had found its mark!

Great!

So it had panicked and made its pokemon try and crush some civilians!

Not so great!

"Goddamn rockets—!" Snapped Doug in a panic as he sharply threw out a pokeball, it releasing one of his Vivillons out. The pokemon barely had time to get its bearings, staring at the frightened couple in confusion, not yet realizing the giant boulder of pain barreling towards it.

"GUST!" The youth ordered in a hurry, to which the Vivillon could only respond by doing as it was told, tossing the frightened couple aside onto their bums.

Just in time to get promptly smashed into by the trampling rolling attack, it threatening to completely crush her underfoot— before the attack was stopped just short...

By Doug's struggling wigglytuff, the her arms outstretched in front of herself.

"Just in time...!" Doug breathed a sigh of relief as he returned his unconscious vivillon, before quickly swiveling his gaze back to Foxy—

It all sets up the perfect distraction.

With the leaguer and his Pokémon distracted by the potential disaster, there’s no chance to interfere with their escape route. Fern wheezes, head still spinning from whatever it was the little punk had done to them.[break][break]

After the chaos she had unleashed, Nim returns to Fern’s side where he manages to swap her for their gengar. The spectral Pokémon hovers around them, keeping watch with an unnerving grin.[break][break]

Perhaps John Sullivan would recognize this particular Pokémon from the group scrap at the edges of the Border—the one who had gone after his own Pokémon with a ferocious FOCUS BLAST.[break][break]

Now she waited in silence for the command that Fern still struggles to give. They won’t be swept up and coddled, no. They refuse to go out weakly. So despite the continuing pain that lances through them, they force themself to stand and give the young man a mocking salute before snapping their fingers.[break][break]

“Thank you for your commendable service~ Really, such an honor,” they call out in a falsely earnest tone. Only to drop backward into the opening their gengar creates through PHANTOM FORCE, and then wink out of sight.[break][break]

They’ll catch their breath elsewhere, thanks.
