In an out and up and down. There never seemed to be enough time to truly catch his bearings with everything that was going on.

Every life lost, every partner taken away, it all weighted the youth down, chipped away at his mental acuity and stamina. His body was doing much better than his mind, though one wouldn't know it from a brief glance his way. His uniform clung to him for dear life in scorched, ribboned tatters.

All that is to say— he really didn't need this right now.

When yet another portal opened up, his body immediately tensed as he sprang to his feet in alarm, a hand already on a pokeball while the other fiddled with the firearm under his pit.

But it wasn't yet another rocket out for blood.

Not yet anyway.

"Mr. Silph?" The youth said, eyes wide at the disheveled, bloodied look the man had about him. Even after seeing him on what others might consider a death bed, he couldn't get used to the usually composed and well-groomed councilman looking like he stepped straight out of the battlefield.

Unfortunately, the battlefield decided to follow the councilman, as it oft seemed to do.

"Aw shit!" He cussed as he suddenly lurched forward and tried to grab onto Fernando's shoulder, yanking the man back and away from his pursuers whilst chugging the pokeball in his grip over the man's shoulder, releasing a Garchomp into their path. "Sand tomb!"

DOUG’S CALL FOR CONCERN MERITS NO RESPONSE. they are on the battlefield. a place where lives are decided by the smallest inaction. worry, after all, is a burden for the living. and their stake in this war has yet to be determined.

“close it!”

the SAND TOMB impedes those who escape the portal but as long as it remains open, those in ULTRA SEA will continues to flow outward. in the grand scheme of things, team rocket is the least of their worries. a swarm of fresh NIHILEGO (not to be confused with the domesticated variety) or PARADOX POKEMON bear deadlier ramifications than any humans ever could.

The order brings the youth's gaze to the portal beyond the curtain of dirt and rockets— his mind catches up a moment later, understanding the why.

"Simon!" The youth shouts as he chucks a meteor chunk, his Garchomp's gaze following the rock as it arched through the air before it snatched it into its maw. With mild confusion, it glanced back at the youth, eyes gleaming. "Get to the portal! Dragon Rush!"

Only half understanding its orders, the dragon crouched low before launching forth like a bullet in a fiery haze of blue flames, barreling past all that stood in its path to carry out its mission.

For his part, Doug's grip onto FERNANDO SILPH's shoulder tightened ever so slightly as his arm began to glow pink, the youth attempting to inject some healing scales into the man.

THE SLOW MEND OF AN AVATAR STARTS TO STITCH THE MOST DIRE WOUNDS. its a power fernando has felt once before but this time he remains self aware. he can feel his skin grow and tissues reconnect. a bizarre sensation that’s second to the wounds doug’s power cannot heal.

“liepard,” fernando commands as he kneels over to tap one of his spare pokeballs.

he doesn’t have to pay attention to the battlefield to see what happens. no matter how adequate doug may be, a single GARCHOMP cannot best a flurry of team rocket’s pokemon. it may bulldoze past several due to its speed but all it takes is a single BLOCK from a NOSEPASS to keep the pokemon tethered to a specific perimeter.

those who have ventured into ULTRA SPACE long enough may have lucked out on capturing one of these beast for themselves. these rockets are no different. a NIHILEGO makes an appearance among the pouring rockets, seeking to BIND the dragon with its venomous tentacles.

He clicked his tongue as Simon's advance was brought to a halt, before feeling his skin crawl as the eldritch nature of the Ultra Deepsea seemed to spill into the caverns without warning.

The scariest amongst the ultra beasts' numbers reached across the looking glass and into their world, unnatural and disquieting as ever, and making its slow march towards his pokemon.

Even the garchomp seemed disturbed by the approaching ultra beast, specially now that it found itself surrounded—

"Simon, use dig!" Ordered the youth over the cacophony as he reached into his jacket and uncliped an ultra-ball from within, reeling back before throwing it forth.

"Send it back where it came from, Slime!" Roared the youth as he threw it out into battle—

Releasing his Melmetal onto the field.

“BATTLE ROUTINE SET!”

the command gets the LIEPARD to crouch on all fours. like doug, fernando fishes for what little METEOR FRAGMENTS he has left before tossing it toward the pokemon.

“execute!”

with his final command, the feline snatches the item in its mouth, darting into the fray as well.

“we need more than that,” he slips to doug while finessing another pokeball. the obvious one he has is probably the one he’s expended the most today. pushing it further is reckless but they don’t have the privilege of frugality.

time to see how valuable kyle lopez’s power is actualized.

fernando tosses another pokeball that reveals his STEELIX. the pokemon causes the whole chasm to shake at its appearance, coiling around the two as it bears down on those closest to the two trainers.

"Roger!" Doug parroted as his burnt cap ignited with light without warning, the gleaming rainbow gem embedded upon its badge crackling with the power of Mega Evolution. "Slime!"

His Melmetal swelled in size as its liquid steel body began to morph, it's stout but powerful limbs stretching as it into long, gangly appendages before it seemingly melted into a lake mass of metal, pooling into the cavernous floors and at the rocket's and their pokemon's feet.

The youth punched the air, roaring.

"Clear a path—!

G-max Move

Meltdown!

The lake of steel came alive, surging upwards into the rockets like heat seeking rockets, oversized fists of steel hammering into them and throwing them and their pokemon into the air.

Two particularly large steel fists attempted to crush the ultra beast, simultaneously criscrossing towards it.

"Go for it, Simon!" Shouted the youth, his Garchomp tearing through the soil and launching itself towards the portal.

“MEGA EVO!”

fernando’s own pained exclamation is muted in comparison. from the center of his inactive SYGNA SUIT, his MEGA STONE reacts. instead of a SYNC STONE, the STEELIXITE radiates PRIMAL ENERGY onto its surroundings.

a MEGA STEELIX grows from the carapace of its default form.

“clear!”

he grabs onto doug with both hands to steady himself as his MEGA STEELIX poises its head neatly above the MEGA MELMETAL. it starts to channel its LIGHT OF RUIN as the pokemon are thrown upwards from the G-MELTDOWN. what erupts instead isn’t just any move but the pokemon’s Z-MOVE: RUINOUS BLOOMS IN MOONLIGHT.

a devastating beam of light is unleashed on the battlefield before leaving lingering energy. the user is empowered immensely, but becomes confused.

the liepard ignores the chaos behind it. even as the light threatens to catch up with its searing heat, the pokemon ducks between numerous legs and appendages. a swift FAKE OUT allows it to slip past those agile enough to keep up, bringing it to the portal itself.

“huawch!”

a sharp bite into the solid ore causes it to break into many pieces. this close to the portal, portions of it start to crystalize, acting as a zipper as it tries to wean the dimensional fissure away.

It was the first time Fernando had touched him in any way, shape or form, but the youth couldn't really ponder on that as the explosions rocked his frame and threatened to throw him on his ass if he didn't focus on his balance.

The explosive lightshow lit up the cavern as the Steelix's blast tore through the place, a ruthless showing of lethal force which, given FERNANDO SILPH's disheveled state, the soldier could scarcely hold him accountable for; it was clear Rocket had treated him with no better intent.

Shortly after Liepard had crushed its fragment, Simon the Garchomp reached the portal as well, chomping onto the tiny meteor in his maw and crushing it into a fine powder.

The partial sealing became a full blockade as the rest of the red crystal fully consumed the portal.

This should've meant that all of their troubles had been dealt with... it should have.

CRIMSON CRYSTALS START A CHAIN REACTION. each one giving birth to another as they start to fill the empty tear between this GRANITE CAVE and ULTRA SEA. however, the reaction is not instant or whole. it is the slow crawl of a tantalizing zipper, pairing teeth by teeth as they continue along their predetermined path.

sandwiched between the dozen of rockets that have already breached the portal and those who are still looking to escape, fernando’s LIEPARD is easily sucked into the vacuum of ULTRA SEA. multiple attacks, including the physical pull of a NIHILEGO, render it out of reach for aide. the pokemon disappears into the great beyond in the same fashion mateo, the original elite four, had been kidnapped oh so many years ago.

this time, there would be no kyle lopez to jump in after it.

he can barely care for the STEELIX that’s starting to losing steam from exerting its Z-MOVE.

“clean them up,” is more of a confirmation that he’ll rely on doug to wrap this up, than an order.

nevertheless, his STEELIX fires a much milder SMACK DOWN as its MEGA EVOLUTION starts to fade away.

"Roger!" The soldier replied, taking it as an order all the same. "Put 'em all down."

Mega Slime seemed good for at least another swing at things, remaining in its liquid state around several rockets and their pokemon's ankles even electricity crackled and flowed over its surface.

Electricity blasted at those trapped in the steel lake, the hyper conductivity of the metal serving to clean up, if not the pokemon immediately, then at least the humans commanding them. And with that taken care of, then...

Palming a number of scatterbangs in his hand, the youth reeled back before chucking it into the crowd. The sharp, ringing bang that followed had a ripple effect over the electrified, sometimes paralyzed pokemon the rockets had brought along. Injured, disoriented, and with precious few possessing anything even remotely resembling a close relationship to their 'trainers', several of them attempted to make a run for it.

With varying amounts of success.

Either way, Doug was already palming another pokeball, releasing his new paldean friend— Lokix onto the scene and letting it run amok on the disoriented reminders.

"... Where's Simon?" Doug mumbled as he looked around, brow furrowing. Had he gone digging again...?

THE BATTLE SHIFTS EASIER THAN IT SHOULD CONSIDERING THEIR NUMBERS. elated, fernando keeps to himself as he takes a moment to rest. his STEELIX is returned to his ball while doug oversees those who are left.

a hand clutches his communication device but what’s left is fragmented pieces of plastic and wires. not unlike what happened to Eva Morales. however, fernando grimaces inwardly as he regrets his choice in letting her go. when her device broke, she could rely on him.

when it was his turn to be vulnerable? he was alone. isolated. prime pickings as he crawled his way out of ULTRA SEA against team rocket’s finest.

“tch.”

his LIEPARD becomes an afterthought as he clutches his chest, pulse dying down to normal levels.

“call for backup. they’ll apprehend and clean up from here,” is his last and final order to doug.

even fernando knows when he’s expended too much. time for him to retire from tonight’s war front.

"i'll head back to camp for a debrief on our current status."

Another one. How many was he going to lose in a single day? How many could he justify to himself? He had been the one to sign his life away not them.

He was feeling sick.
