The taste of blood lingered upon his lips.[break][break]

It was a taste long familiarized, truthfully— one he’d even say he grew fond of, over the years. As he glared upon the reflection set before him, he ran a thumb along the bend of his jaw within a careful, tender manner; hues of amber narrowing within a faint grimace as a softened hiss left his lips.[break][break]

Familiarity had never been synonymous with painless, after all.[break][break]

Yet it was his choice to get tangled with his own business before more business. The fights were lulling, from what short glimpses he could steal upon the ring after he’d arrived. The audience needed something to rile them up; something to get his fighters to set an expectation for. Done and done, really— but at both his expense and pleasure, all the same.[break][break]

He’d left the ring back within the hands of one of his right hands soon after; the selfsame hands that took charge of that particular establishment in his stead in order to spread accountability in the worst case. The fights raged on beneath his feet some floors below, blockaded only by the varied auditory precautions he’d taken with forming the place, altogether— a sharp contrast to the peace of the room he’d excused himself to. He inhaled deeply, running his tongue along the wounds within his mouth absentmindedly before turning towards the door.[break][break]

He glared towards it with a touch of pensiveness and impatience, alike, before ultimately sighing and taking a seat nearby— though not without giving the canids sharing the room a smooth along the heads in passing.[break][break]

”Fuckin’ wastin’ m’goddamn time…” he groaned under his breath, leaning his head back. ”Bastards better not be blockin’ ‘em from gettin’ in…”

Blood is bitter. [break][break]

It's the taste of iron she hates, the taste of metal that sticks to the tongue that reminds her of days of vomiting, crying, and screaming. The crimson that smears smoothly, like a coat of rust over, on the other hand? That's a different story when it blends so well with fabric. [break][break]

It's this sick fascination that lets her feel right at home, maybe. It's why she isn't at all intimidated by the figures who stand tall, guarding a shadow-cast entrance as the sun starts to set. It's rare for her to leave anywhere without someone else, for the sake of her safety, but these kind of "business" was always an exception. Though she'd prefer to have a conversation over a class of fine wine, overlooking the city lights, she'll settle for this shabby place. [break][break]

Entering is never easy, even after she says the phrase that will let her in. Sheba has become a regular, but no one here has probably, properly, seen her face. [break][break]

Even with a mask, make up is the best disguise. [break][break]

Tonight, she dons light, auburn locks sway behind, under a black cap that shade striking, aquamarine eyes. A man follows from behind, though she doesn't complain (tight security, as always, to ensure that none of the rats wiggle their ways in; she can respect that). One test with the mask over her lips, and it should be alright. [break][break]

The door opens, and she finds a large man who has made himself comfortable. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting," Though she smiles, the only indicator is the slight raise of her cheeks as she approaches and pulls out a seat. She leans back, casually, and crosses one leg over the other. [break][break]

A triad’s set of eyes hovered towards the door at the sound of its knob turning, leaving both canid and human, alike, glaring in idle anticipation. The two of the former soon saw fit to lay their heads back down upon noting the visitor and her escorts, all while their trainer simply breathed another, disdained sigh while beginning to sit up just a little bit straighter.[break][break]

A single word uttered with no shortage of ever-growing impatience and annoyance, alike.[break]
Call it a bad mood. He watched as she seated herself, either way.[break][break]

”I dunno if ya got held up, or if ya just took yer damn time,” he groaned, lifting a hand to rub the bridge of his nose in exasperation, ”but cut t’the chase, now that yer finally here.”[break][break]

He shifted forward, propping his chin against the heel of his palm while leaning against his knee.[break][break]

Did something happen? [break][break]

He isn't usually this impatient or aggressive, so maybe he's in a bad mood. Sheba reminds herself that it isn't her problem, but working with an irritated man isn't as pleasant or as smooth. Her only saving grave is that she's worked with him before, though through these same guises and pretenses. [break][break]

So, prepared as ever, she unzips her messenger bag as he shifts in his seat. She's quick, at least, to pull out a binder. It hits the table, opened, to a few pictures of a woman in black, of varying angles with face visible. [break][break]

"This woman." one hand holds the sturdy binder, the other points to the picture with the clearest view of her face "Early thirties, an employee of Inu."[break][break]

Her voice is sharp, and she's careful to match the air. Sheba knows what she came here for (it was the same every time; to have a head on a pike). she only glares at the page with a frigid cold, though now she just feels tired. "I want her dead."

His eyes trailed towards the selfsame bag she reached for within the same moment she’d begun to do so, an idle, bored look briefly taking his gaze before she displayed the pictures before him. Both chest and shoulders rose with a deep breath as he reached his free hand down, taking the leg of the chair he sat upon and pulling it forward as he scooted closer towards the binder and the table separating them.[break][break]

”Inu…? The fuck were they on about, again?” he murmured absentmindedly, brows furrowing beneath the shade of the hat donned upon his head all the while. ”That…fashion company? Fuckin’ entertainment? Whatever the fuck they did—”[break][break]

He sighed, resting a gloved finger against the page with the intent of flipping it in further observation.[break][break]

”What’s the connection, then?” he droned on, his voice low and flat as if borderline uninterested. ”Shit ass person? Stole ya man? What?”

She'll never get used to talking about her own company in a haphazard way - especially when, as the face, she's always been proud and openly prideful of the empire she's built from the ground. It surprises her, slightly, when a man like him can at least recognize the name. Maybe she'll take it as a compliment, knowing it's reached the depths of this world. [break][break]

The pages, lo and behold, detail schedules, routes, and frequented areas. If she wants something done, it's thorough - down to the daily routine in the schedule along with contacts and regular people and visits. She'll write down upcoming events, blocked out dates, and finish the investigation in advance (and she'll make it flawless, as it always has been, and as it always will be).[break][break]

She quirks a brow when he asks, silently debating. He could be a threat, and arrogance never served did any favors - and neither did dishonesty. Sheba knows better than to let things drone on, so she simply shrugs her shoulders, before planting an elbow against the table, and resting her chin against her wrist. "Knows too much." [break][break]

A sigh escapes her lips as she scans the upside of the pages. There's no loyalty unless the money speaks, so she's careful with her words, and careful with her reasoning. "I'm surprised that you cared."[break][break]

A small, scoffing snort left his lips at her initial response.[break][break]

”Yeah, yer right. Ain’t fuckin’ matter.”[break][break]

It was a world he could care less about, anyways.[break][break]

Lowly humming, his eyes narrowed further as he peered through the varied sources and pages she’d so graciously gone out of her way to fashion for him. Before long, he shifted his gaze further along one of the pages—closer to where his finger resided—before ultimately reaching over and hooking his hand beneath its spine and curling his fingers upon the top of the booklet. He spared her a small glare from the corner of his eyes before looking back down at the images and texts, pulling the compiled sources from her and setting them into his lap.[break][break]

”Ain’t that I care, just that it’s curious as fuck.” He tapped his thumb against the edge of the pages, pursing his lips slightly in thought beneath the mask upon his face. ”Ya literally got the outline of her daily life, fer fuck’s sake.”[break][break]

His gaze broke from the pages once more, returning to meet hers for a second time from the corner of his eye.[break][break]

”Either yer close with her, or yer dirty enough t’be good at pryin’ into shit ya shouldn’t have access to.”[break][break]

Not like the latter would be surprising, though.[break]
They both knew the reason she was there, after all.

oh, is that so?[break][break]

"so you're nosy" is said casually, a quick conclusion. though it's still said with a smile of amusement, and some lofty sense of curiosity alike. recalling back to previous hits and requests, wasn't she always detailed with these sorts of requests? although she would usually come in with the usual disguise, there was always someone she needed to kill (and there was always more than one, two, five people willing to take the job for the pay). [break][break]

still, with the same, striking blue eyes (a lie), she smiles and shrugs her shoulders. "I like being thorough." her head tilts further against the palm of her hand, fingers lightly running over the mask's fabric as she squints "doesn't it make your job easier?" [break][break]

It's not his job to investigate, after all. it's only to kill, get rid of the body, and take her money. Nothing more, nothing less. There's something charming about the straight-forwardness of underground work, if she has to be honest. [break][break]

"besides," she only scoffs quietly, under the mask as her legs cross and she leans into the backrest of the seat. "I think we're both just as dirty~" [break][break]

they're the ones putting a price on a human life.

”Yeah. So do I,” he shot back immediately, a hardened glare locked between narrowed eyes serving as a clear contrast to the smile offered his way. A spark flickered within his eyes as he idly allowed them to linger upon her—almost as if calculative—before they found themselves veiled beneath their lids.[break][break]

He stood up with a low, almost growling sigh of impatience as he stood up, bringing the binder with him.[break][break]

”I’ll admit ya pay well,” he started off, walking towards a small, personal bar located along the side of the room, ”but whatever ya think people like me do? All that nitty gritty shit?”[break][break]

He began picking through a couple of cabinets, quickly flicking a box of cigarettes out onto the surfaces around him.[break][break]

”I’d bet money yer oversimplyin’ the fuck outta the process.”[break][break]

Tossing the booklets onto the countertop for a moment, he opened the box while simultaneously reaching into one of his pockets, revealing a lighter prior to flicking it open with a gentle click. While still turned from her for the most part, he tugged his mask down—barely—before placing the smoke between his lips and igniting it.[break][break]

”Makes it easier, yeah— but ye’d be a dumbass bastard not to do yer own diggin’ in the line of work,” he added, inhaling deeply before long. His eyes closed as he clipped the lighter back over, returning it to his pocket as he leaned over and began to scan the pages with a long, wispy breath out. ”Just ‘cause the business is dirty doesn’t mean I ain’t gonna do it well.”

But that isn't the job she has to do, now is it? it's the job she's paying him to do. it's a wonder why he was being so chatty today. at first, she has trouble trying to understand what the problem is - especially when he actually gets up to grab himself a smoke. her hand instinctively raises to slightly adjust the mask on the bridge of her nose, mostly to try and keep the stench of cigar fumes away. [break][break]

she's at least respectful of hidden identities so, even with his back turned to her, she instinctively lowers the cap on her head, shadowing her vision before looking away to the side. she'll be the first to admit that she's never been interested in the specifics of killing (not that she's ever seen a death before her eyes, nor will she ever like to), it's certainly not an easy job. [break][break]

it's why she hires someone else to do it for her. [break][break]

but of course, she can't say that, now can she? though being spoken down to has never left a good taste in her mouth, she still knows better. "oh?" she hums, cocking her head to the side, only slightly "I'll admit. you've always done a great job" she starts, leaning forwards to rest her elbows against her knees.[break][break]

there's a slight glint to her glare when she gazes at the mask and the hat of his. this approach isn't unfamiliar to her; maybe he just isn't satisfied. "so tell me more about the process, and we'll see about that bet."

He breathed in deeply once more, briefly slipping the cigarette from his lips prior to breathing another, slow stream of grey out, all while flicking tube between his fingers to rid of its ash. ”Use yer brain t’think ‘bout it.”[break][break]

He turned another page, though allowed his eyes to stray towards her, once more.[break][break]

”More info I got, the better I can do, and the more I know ‘bout what boundaries I can cross. I know ‘bout her friends? I can prep for ‘em, and they could help me get a better route in.” He tapped the cigar a few more times, though seemingly in a more absentminded manner, rather than intentional, as he narrowed his eyes. ”More I know ‘bout ‘em, the more parallels and connections I can draw. Maybe they’re fuckin’ dirty as shit, too, if not the friends— blackmail ‘n scapegoat potential. Maybe they got bad blood with people— that’s even more context t’get.”[break][break]

He glared at her for a while longer before inhaling deeply, setting the object within his grasp into a nearby tray for a simple spell.[break][break]

”It’s insurance, fer fuck’s sake. Yer the one payin’ good money, and yeah— ye’ve given me good shit in the past. That ain’t mean I don’t do research fer my safety, my benefit, and t’make sure yer gig goes smoothly.”

it's fair, considering his line of work. she ought to have some kind of audacity to assume this work was smooth in and out. but she'll wonder: where is this all coming from? does he have a point to prove, by getting in her face about his line of work? underground work is nothing like business ventures above (she hopes that it isn't; it's already exhausting having to deal with the living and watching for the shadows that lurk beneath the sun). [break][break]

the stench of smoke makes her scrunch her nose under the mask, and her body leans forwards, with cheek in palm and elbow against the table surface. he brings his job up - there's a lot that goes into it. It makes a woman wonder. blue eyes are narrowed beneath the shadow of her cap's bill, but locks of brunette still fall over her shoulders all the same. [break][break]

her legs stay crossed, the other arm raised up to rest against the table with a hum, and another returned glare. "sounds like a lot of work." her tone is starting to taper off the playful side, now as her eyes narrow, slightly, to gaze into the dark corners of a dimly lit room. "so why do it?" [break][break]

he's always in a bad mood when she talks to him, always on the verge of decking someone when she walks through the door, no matter how many times she's made her merry way in. She can't count how many times she's slapped the price his way, along with meticulous information from her client, and never asked. pay and ask no questions, she's so used to (it's become a bit of a habit, a bit of routine). [break][break]

"i know this is all part of your work, all part of making sure you're safe, making sure everything goes smoothly and you don't step on anyone's toes.." a gaze wanders to the cabinets he come back from, and a hum buzzes against her lips. maybe she'll have a nice glass of wine when she gets home. "but why do you kill for work?" now she asks, tilting her head with a leisure hum. [break][break]

"you could do easier shit, less dangerous shit, less killing and less risky shit. so, why don't you?"

Their fingers tapped against the fabric of his attire within a seemingly absentminded agitation.[break][break]

not at him, mind - at herself. if he tells her everything personal immediately, he'd be no better than a sitting duck. of course he'd look at her with distrust, and with distaste - why wouldn't he when she looks at him the same way? perhaps she's finally gone senile, perhaps her sins are finally catching up to her, and they're weighing on her conscious (and she's just looking for something that can alleviate it, but she should know better). "you're right." she dares to still laugh. it's only under the guise of someone else she's this bold. [break][break]

and with the shake of her head, she'll dismiss her momentary lapse. "forget it" she starts, arms crossed as she leans her upper body against the rests of the chair. his words drip with venom that looms over her figure, while her gaze hardens with cold steel. "you'll find all her information in those binders. like you said, i have everything -" her fingers reach into the same bag, though now pulling out a larger suitcase to place on the table, away from the files " - from her daily life to her friends." sheba plays dirty, after all. "here's the payment." she sets the case down, carefully. [break][break]
