Cillian's world had fallen apart, yet the world at large goes on the same. He returns from Galar in a daze to a schedule packed full of appointments and a desk full of reports. In a way, it's a relief to have the distraction.[break][break]

Because he is not coping with her loss. She may not have been dead, but the absence of Lulu Flint was an aching void in his chest that no amount of comfort could fill. Tempest Quinn had tried, bless his heart, but even he could not fix the fact that Cillian's sister was gone and it was Cillian's fault. He barely even considered how declan walsh might react to his second sibling's disappearance so soon after the first; he was too focused on the sorrow that buried its roots deep into his psyche.[break][break]

Were it not for his husband pressing food into his hands, he wouldn't have eaten that morning. He showers only out of pure routine. There are bags under his eyes that could be blamed on jet lag, but there's no excuse for the deep sorrow that etches itself across his face.[break][break]

It is in this state that Naomi Sato would find him, sitting in the lab in which they'd taken to meeting and scrolling idly through his phone without truly seeing what was there. He looks up when she enters, tries to smile. It doesn't meet his eyes.[break][break]

"What tests are we running today?"[break][break]

He forcibly injects calm into his tone, but there's none of his usual enthusiasm.

She knew immediately upon seeing him that something was wrong.[break][break]
She had known Cillian Quinn to be a remarkably resilient man. Even when he was visibly tired or injured, he still carried himself with a confident demeanor - not so much out of bravado, but because he was a firm believer in seeing things through. Rarely did he quit on anything he was in the midst of doing; for Rocket, he drew from a seemingly endless well of dedication and perseverance.[break][break]
The man sitting at the lab table, however, didn't just appear distracted. He looked defeated. As if he had nothing left to give.[break][break]
Nomi approached cautiously, Valerian at her heels. An Unown-A floated after them: these days, Nomi always had at least one of the strange little symbol Pokémon watching her back. Valerian also seemed to sense something off about Cillian. He padded over and immediately rested his head in the man's lap. Val was hardly so affectionate with anyone, but like his mistress, he had grown quite fond of the Underboss.[break][break]
"Cillian..." Nomi started, brow furrowing with genuine concern, completely ignoring his inquiry about the tests she had planned to run. Dark circles under reddened eyes. A palpable tension.[break][break]
"Are you allright?"

It's said quickly, mechanically — convincing enough were it not for the intuition of the woman he spoke to, her curious gaze missing nothing.[break][break]

He glances away, uncomfortable under the scrutiny no matter how soft the intent, and sighs. His shoulders slump under the weight of the grief he's been trying to bury since touching back down on Hoennian soil.[break][break]

A lump forms in his throat that isn't dislodged by a hard swallow.[break][break]

"Saoirse's gone," he says, soft. In that moment, he's no longer a Rocket underboss but an older brother who'd failed to protect his sister for the last time. His jaw trembles, betraying him until he clenches it.

A cold dread filled Nomi as she processed his admission. Lulu, gone? Gone where? Gone how? A million questions competed for her attention, but she held them back, struck dumb by the sheer grief conveyed with Cillian's words: his tone, his body language, his entire demeanor. A similar anguish began to build within her own gut, but she pushed it away too.[break][break]
She did not hesitate. Striding forward, she joined Valerian next to Cillian, and, though the Underboss was sitting and she was standing - which brought them eye-to-eye due to their height difference - she reached for him. And for the second time since she'd met him, pulled him into a hug.[break][break]
"Tell me everything," she requested gently. "Whatever you say, it will be safe with me. Please, I..." also love her.[break][break]
She almost said it, but her own throat felt tight all of a sudden, a growing ache in her chest. She needed to be strong for him right now. And she had a feeling he knew how she felt about his sister. After all, she'd been like a sister to Nomi too.

It takes a deal of effort to remember how to move his muscles, how to unclench his teeth so that he might answer her plea.[break][break]

Ordinarily, Cillian shied from physical contact... save from his friends, his family, and Naomi Sato could now be considered both. The closest thing to a sister he had left, with Lulu Flint gone, and perhaps the only person who might relate in his grief.[break][break]

Not for the first time since he'd collapsed on the floor of the hotel in Galar, tears build and spill over. He loathes himself for the weakness and yet can't do anything to stem their flow, heat sliding down his cheeks as he stiffly moves to reciprocate the somewhat awkward embrace. His breath trembles as he tries to think of how to put absence into words.[break][break]

"I-I don't know where," he admits, at last, his voice shaky enough that he purses his lips and clears his throat. When he tries again, it's forcibly steadier. "We went back to Galar, and when I went back to the hotel to pack, she..."[break][break]

Pokeballs on her bed, her luggage missing. Inside the capsules, the most important Pokémon in her life.[break][break]

A goodbye without words.[break][break]

"She didn't take it well when Rowan..." And that was another secret he'd kept close, wasn't it? Disentangling himself from Nomi, Cillian smooths back his hair — an anxious gesture. "Rowan Wrynn was our half-brother. Fuck him for what he put us through. She — I thought maybe going back to Galar would give us some closure."[break][break]

There's a painful softness to the admission. My fault, it suggests.[break][break]

"I had to turn him in." He's practically pleading with Nomi to understand. "Walsh would've killed us both. I didn't have a choice."[break][break]

And yet you made the wrong one.

She held him tight, tried to convey through touch how much she cared. She didn't know all of the details, all of the history, but she didn't need to. She listened with an open heart.[break][break]
When he finally pulled away, she let him go. She leaned against the lab table, seeing the wet streaks on his cheeks. Cillian was not the sort of man who cried often, she guessed. Once again, she could not help but feel a kinship with Tempest Quinn in that moment, the only other person she could think of who had likely ever seen Cillian in such a vulnerable state...besides perhaps Lulu herself.[break][break]
Rowan Wrynn. His name kept coming up. Nomi knew he'd defected from Rocket. Half-brother? This was complicated.[break][break]
Lulu first, then Rowan.[break][break]
"Lu - Saoirse was an incredibly gifted scientist and inventor. She had a very curious mind. It was part of what made her so easy to relate to." Nomi faltered, choking back her own tears. "She wanted to enter the Interdream Zone. She wanted to find a way...out. Out of the origin point, out of this world, out of whatever apocalypse the DRK Triad thinks is coming for us. Maybe she's trying to pursue that, Cillian."[break][break]
She looked down at her own hands. Were her words even comforting? Maybe she was terrible at this after all, no matter how much Isaac Merlo believed in her ability to be a good friend...a good sister.[break][break]
"She might be gone, but I think she's alive, Cillian. I choose to believe that she is. She was a complex woman who put a lot of pressure on herself...maybe she felt going off on her own was the only way for her to succeed at...whatever she felt like she had to do." A single tear streaked down her cheek now, breaking through the barrier of her resolve. "For all of us. For you."[break][break]
She sucked in a breath, tried to maintain her composure.[break][break]
"Tell me more about Rowan. What do you plan to do about him?"[break][break]

For all his instinctual aversion to it, touch was Cillian's love language. The weight of Naomi Sato's presence speaks louder than any words could; that he was not alone in his grief was enough to stabilize his spiraling emotions enough to carry conversation.

But he was quickly overwhelmed, seeking distance and the pack of cigarettes tucked against his chest.
[break][break]

He's halfway through the familiar motions, lighter in hand, when he realises that the sterile lab might not be the most polite place to light up.
[break][break]

"Sorry," he says, quickly, "do you mind? We could go to the courtyard, or..."
[break][break]

Wherever they end up, he takes a long moment to digest her words. I choose to believe. If only it were so easy for him. He remembered what his sister had said, when he'd asked her if she thought she could ever be happy. No.
[break][break]

That was his fault, too. He'd abandoned her to their parents, chased her off when she'd chased him down.
[break][break]

Guilt strangles in the pit of his stomach, and his hands shake as he lights his cigarette. He finds comfort in the bad habit.
[break][break]

"I thought she'd learned to trust me." There was deeper meaning behind those words, should Nomi search for it. "And why not take her Pokémon, if she didn't intend to..."
[break][break]

He can't finish the thought.
[break][break]

He's much more eager to focus on the subject of their brother, his lip curling with disgust.

"Kill him," he says emphatically. "Like he might well have killed us." Walsh had been merciful, Cillian thought. caden maher and his family had not been so lucky. Yet his own continued survival depended on his unwavering loyalty. "Walsh has ordered as much, besides."

She waved a hand dismissively at his cigarettes. Go ahead, the gesture communicated. This was her private laboratory, and it was clear he needed one. In any case, enough burnt samples had already tested the fire alarms. A single cigarette wouldn't trigger them.[break][break]
And why not take her Pokémon, if she didn't intend to ...[break][break]
Why indeed? Nomi frowned, a crack in her logic causing her to feel suddenly exposed. Susceptible to the grief that was knocking - banging - on the front door leading into her heart. Had Lulu left even Darkrai behind? She could ask that question, but she wouldn't. Couldn't. That was a line she wasn't ready to cross. She needed to hold onto every scrap of hope she could, lest she crumble before this man who was already broken.[break][break]
Rowan. Focus on Rowan.[break][break]
The vitriol in Cillian's tone was momentarily shocking, not so much because Nomi disagreed with it (based on what she had just heard) but because it was such a stark contrast to the sadness the man had just displayed for his sister. Nomi cocked her head, honing in on Cillian's anger. Kill his own brother? She had never known such a sentiment, but that didn't mean it wasn't deserving.[break][break]
"Where is he now? Do we know? If he's gone to the League, perhaps he's being protected by the government." Nomi paused, something occurring to her. "Doesn't Zev Harcourt have a brother in the Rangers? Perhaps he could be...coerced into giving up Rowan's location." Another defector, another strained relationship between brothers.[break][break]
Empathy burned in her chest for Cillian. For Zev. For anyone who had been hurt by family. The sort of betrayal that cut deeper than mere conflicts between factions. She did not know how it felt, but she could see the pain in Cillian's expression. The things Rowan had forced Cillian to do, to become.[break][break]
I will help him, she resolved.

Gratitude twines with the calming effect that the cigarettes bring; while one was manufactured, temporary, his appreciation for Naomi Sato settles deeper.

Especially when, instead of questioning his hatred toward Rowan Wrynn, she makes good on her desire to help.

"He's with the League," Cillian affirms. "It was Razz Kingsman who took him in for the 'arrest'." The air quotes were audible, a sneer of disgust accenting his words. Razz was another friend he'd lost to the League, another name in his book. "They've made that traitor Head Ranger, so Harcourt could certainly know his whereabouts."

Cillian knew a good deal about the situation between Caleb Harcourt and Zev Harcourt; he doesn't get into it here.

"Kill two birds with one stone," he muses, instead. "I like that. Zev and I can settle our scores together."

Head Ranger? Another Rocket defector? Nomi pursed her lips. Was the League always so trusting of former Rockets or had this one been rewarded? It was one thing to put such a person under some kind of protection against Rocket assassins, but to appoint them to a position of power? What had Razz Kingsman sold to them? How had he earned their trust?[break][break]
She shook her head. Once again, she tried to focus on the matter at hand: Cillian's grief.[break][break]
"Zev will assist you," she assured. "As for me, I can use my connections within Slateport University to try and find out more. They often work with Rangers for various educational purposes. A few of the professors are ex-Rangers, as well."[break][break]
She wondered vaguely if GIDEON GRAVES had any Ranger friends or associates; he likely did, given that Rangers often stumbled across artifacts or ended up with Pokémon that could be donated to the Natural History Museum's ongoing research.[break][break]
She paused, practical tone returning to a gentler cadence. "I will help you find Saoirse as well, if you wish to search for her." Nomi glanced at the Unown-A. "There are ways of peering into other dimensions...alternate realities..." She trailed off. The sentiment of if she's even alive remaining unspoken but nonetheless lingering between them like an unpleasant scent.[break][break]
Proof. They had no proof she was dead. Until they did, Nomi would not give up on Lulu Flint.

So long as it benefits him, Cillian thinks, of Zev Harcourt. Though he doesn't speak those cynical words aloud, he nods in agreement with Naomi Sato's statement. He was still of use to Zev, for now. Their mutual need for vengeance would buoy their partnership in the coming days, Cillian is sure.[break][break]

Some of the lost light returns to Cillian's golden gaze at the mention of Slateport University. A spark of hope, twisted as it was.[break][break]

"Row - Wrynn attended classes there."[break][break]

It had been partly at Cillian's insistence, after a conversation with Rowan Wrynn in which he'd insisted to his little brother that Rocket did not shackle him as tightly as he'd assumed. He could still hold a job, have a life outside of Rocket.[break][break]

Pity that those freedoms had not been enough for the selfish child.[break][break]

"Of course I'm going to search for her." Cillian's tone is sharp with emphasis. Even if Lulu Flint had told him never to look for her, he'd never give up on his baby sister. His tone softens. "And of course I would appreciate your help. You might be the only person I know who cares for her as deeply as I do."[break][break]

Even as he speaks those words, he thinks of THEO BECKETT. Did Beckett grieve her loss, as they did? Perhaps he ought to reach out...

Nomi winced slightly at the way his tone sharpened, knife-like as it fought off helplessness with determination. She understood the sentiment, however: and it seemed he knew that she understood.[break][break]
"I never had any siblings grow up," Nomi gently reminded him. "My parents abandoned me for their work when I was a toddler. My grandmother was a kindly woman, but she did not live long after their departure." Nomi shrugged, a small, wry smile gracing her lips. "I wasn't exactly a socialite. I didn't make friends easily in my youth."[break][break]
She'd poured her heart out to Isaac Merlo about her struggles with friendship last winter. He'd assured her she was a good friend, but she still did not think her past reflected his current opinion. How many nights had she chosen to study over socialize? How many people had she ignored, brushed off, felt disconnected from as she'd passionately pursued her academic dreams? The search for her parents had been an obsession, a burden she had not been able to share with others for a long time because of the connections to Rocket.[break][break]
"Saoirse was the first person I'd met in a long time who...really accepted me. Trusted me. She could recognize that we were like-minded, and she never questioned my curiosity or my ambitions." Nomi's smile grew softer. "She cared about me in a way I don't think she cared about very many. Maybe she'd always wanted a sister, too." She paused. "It's an honor, you know. The way she - and you - have treated me."[break][break]
It seemed Rowan did not feel the same. A pity.

His sharp tone cuts without meaning to, and Cillian softens it as a result. His anger was directionless without the defectors to slake its thirst, and he had no desire to wound Nomi in their place.[break][break]

"We were much the same, I think. Saoirse and I."[break][break]

She prefers Lulu and yet he cannot stop himself from using the names they'd used as children, each other's only company in the lonely Quinn Court.[break][break]

"I am... grateful for you." There's a certain stilted discomfort to the words; it's clear Cillian doesn't often bare his emotions so openly. That had been a product of their childhood, too. "I'm sure she was as well."[break][break]

A pained look flashes through his eyes. "Is. I'm sure she is."[break][break]

But he'd already spoken those awful words into the air, and the threat of their truth tears at his heart.

Nomi knew it was not easy for a man like Cillian to speak his vulnerability into existence. She felt her chest constrict as he admitted to caring for her. Gratitude was the closest thing she might receive from him akin to love. It was enough. More than enough.[break][break]
After all, her blood family had offered nothing more than absence and empty promises.[break][break]
"We'll find her," she reassured him, tone firm. How his pain pierced her too, like a stinging wound. A man like him should not be brought low by such grief. If he continued to waver, so would she. If they were going to find Lulu, they needed to be strong for her.[break][break]
Nomi had run from the truth before. It never ended well. Better to take control of how one learned things, than leave it up to chance. If Lulu was gone - really gone - she would face that terrible loss with her head held high. As Lulu herself would have wanted. Courage rather than cowardice; the willingness to continue on the path of discovery rather than be derailed.[break][break]
"I can begin with her research. It has all been left to me, to us. If there are any clues to be found, I will find them." She paused. "And, Cillian, if there is anything you need from me in the coming days - in regards to Rowan, too - you will have it. Just let me know."
