The mission given to Summer Atreides and her partner was an interesting one at that: retrieve aquatic fossils from the water routes. After doing a bit of research, she determined that today would be the perfect day to do so because of celebration going on.[break][break]

Mermaid shows, to be exact.[break][break]

On the way to the venue, she had met her companion, Isaac Merlo. Brainstorming how they were going to retrieve these fossils were important, and the suggestion of one of them dressing as the mermaid in the show was brilliant.[break][break]

However, that's where they both disagreed.[break][break]

"So, you're going to be the mermaid. My Pokemon and I can handle the rest of the plan while you distract everyone. Make sure to put on a good show," Summer said, her smile anything but warm and welcoming.[break][break]

Because she was not going to be the mermaid.

"I've been picking locks and nabbing goods all my life. I've got a silver tongue and an iron wit. I brought the best damn heist team this side of the region with me. And you're telling me I'm the one on mermaid duty?"[break][break]

The indignity! The shame! The . . . okay, so honestly, Isaac wouldn't have given much of a crap in a vacuum. But now it was about the principle of the thing.[break][break]

"Since I decided this was the best course of action," Summer shot back, tilting her chin as though she dared him to challenge her.[break][break]

Her eyes rolled dramatically as he droned on about his life story about picking locks and looting. Blah, blah, blah. That didn't mean he was capable. And she knew she was capable. Why risk the operation to someone she didn't know when she could do it herself?[break][break]

"Good. They can be put up to good use while I'm working. Hopefully they get along well with my own."[break][break]

His pointed words made her snort. "I'm a master manipulator and can charm anyone I meet with a bat of an eye. This isn't my first time pulling off a heist, fish boy. Guards are nothing but scoundrels, after all. Besides, don't you want to show off to the crowd? Let the guns out a bit?"[break][break]

Summer gestured to her chest before flexing her arms, emphasizing her words. "And my makeup would run. No, thanks."

Dramatic eye rolls. Pointed chins. Chest puffed out like a proud little peacock. This girl really thought she was all that and a bag of chips, huh? Vanity was a fitting look on her, but not as fitting as a big ol' mermaid tail would be.[break][break]

"This ain't my first rodeo either, Ariel. And I've got a break planned with a few friends that makes this whole operation look like chump change." Had he been here, Isaac knew Ashley Shepard would vouch for him. He always did. "So how about you let a real expert show you how to pick up a big score in ten seconds flat?"[break][break]

" 'Sides, they'll have some waterproof makeup for you. That's, like, Mermaid Show 101. But who the hell's ever heard of a mermaid with an eyepatch before? Am I supposed to be some kinda mer-pirate? Am I gonna have a little clamshell over my eye?" Now it was his turn to gesture to himself, giving the eyepatch a tiny tug for emphasis. "Nuh-uh. That ain't gonna put butts in the seats."

Summer refused to take her makeup off. Not when she worked so hard on it. Not to mention, the thought of adding glitter and glam to her face to enhance the sea-effect made her nauseous.[break][break]

"I think the crowd would love a cross over like that. Pirate x merman. You know how many kids love pirates and mermaids? You could be making some poor sap's dream come true today."[break][break]

But as she said that, there were hurried footsteps approaching them. Summer looked up, clearly cross.[break][break]

"There you two are! We've been looking everywhere for you! It's time to get ready for the show," one of the pair said, grabbing Summer's wrist while the other started pushing Isaac from the back.[break][break]

"Who the hell do you- hey! Stop pulling me!"

"Trust me. Better, and worse, people than you've tried. But 23 years and I'm still kicking, baby! Ain't nobody out there laying a hand on this guy!"[break][break]

Famous last words, for someone who just had several hands laid on him. While Isaac and Summer were busy with their spat, the mermaid show maintenance crew had come to decisively end the argument. Both of them were gonna be show ready, and they were going to like it. Isaac was all ready to start laughing at her dilemma, but it was a lot less funny once he was the one getting pulled around.[break][break]

Two changing rooms sat side by side, an atmosphere of defeat hanging over each.[break][break]

"Well," Isaac said, what little dignity he had preserved by the four tight walls he'd been squeezed into. "This sucks."

"You want to see caked on? I can show you caked on after I give you a thing or two to cry about," Summer hissed back with her fist balled at her side. Dark bruises were terrible to cover up, after all.[break][break]

However, they didn't have time to brawl or to argue further in that moment, as the crew pulled them both away to get ready for the show they were both certainly not apart of. Maybe if they had taken notice, they would've seen that they were beside the set and changing rooms.[break][break]

Summer's face had been wiped clean and redone, though she was very verbal about how she was not pleased about being touched by these strange makeup artists or the amount of glitter they were putting on her. But there she sat in the chair with her hands crossed, her jaw tight as she glared ahead.[break][break]

"If you had just agreed, we wouldn't be in this mess," she hissed quietly. The tail they had fitted her into flopped indignantly against the floor.[break][break]

"Where's your grand team you were boasting about anyway?"

But it took two to make a thing go right, and in this case it took two to make a thing go very, very wrong. How were either of them supposed to snatch and grab if neither of them were on hand to snatch or grab?[break][break]

Then again, maybe they still had options. Summer had a point; they still had entire teams of Pokemon to work with. If each of them had prepared for the heist as hard as they'd boasted, they might've stood a chance.[break][break]

"Here," Isaac said, slinging his belt of Pokeballs over the wall between changing rooms. "I'll show you mine if you show me yours."[break][break]

There was a rather eclectic blend of Pokemon contained within Isaac's Pokeballs. A Ralts, armed with teleportation, telekinesis, and telepathy. A Ditto, equal parts a multitool and a master of disguise. A Falinks, practically a team-within-a-team capable of working as a perfect, well-oiled machine. A Klefki, its Illumina status letting it shine through the depths of the ocean floor and its ability to Recycle helping them cover their tracks. Finally, a Porygon, capable of manipulating data however Isaac and Summer would need.[break][break]

Of course, that was only five Pokeballs. What about the sixth? "I'm keeping the last one with me," he explained. "If we're gonna be stuck putting on a show, it might as well be a good one. And there's no water type showstopper out there like a Wishiwashi."

He was rewarded with another dramatic eyeroll from Summer, though it was not like he could see it. Her silence would be a deafening answer to his snarky accusations.[break][break]

However, she reached up and caught the belt as he dropped them down for her to examine. "Do you have to be so crass?" she hissed, reaching for the first Poke ball.[break][break]

Though, as much as she hated to admit it, his team was rather impressive. Summer reached for her own for him to look at. "We can't just do the show and not get a move on with these fossils. Do yours have the capability of carrying out the mission?" she asked.[break][break]

On her belt, he'd see HISUIAN ZOROARK. Hela's ability to perform ILLUSIONS would give them the capability of bypassing guards and distraction. Her ROTOM could hack into computer systems or other digital confines that may be needed, and perhaps it was a good team member for his PORYGON. Next was SLAKING, to lull any potential opponents to sleep. NOIVERN had INFILTRATOR to bypass any guarding Pokemon's ability to stall them. And lastly was EMBOAR, the muscle of the group.[break][break]

"A WISHIWASHI? Really?" Summer sighed, shaking her head as she sent his belt back over. "Fine. I'll bring my VAPOREON to join us."

That said, their contents were nothing to sniff at. Her team was just as all-around useful as his was. An master of disguise. A tech expert. Mr. Naptime. A scalpel. And the muscle.[break][break]

"Alone? Maybe not. But both of ours working together? Now we've got something going." Isaac appraised the strengths and weaknesses of both trainer's Pokemon, a grin spreading across his face. "Rotom on hardware and Porygon on software means any piece of tech in our way's pretty much a playground. If there's record on where the fossils are stored, they'll be able to find 'em."[break][break]

"Zoroark and Ditto are another dream team, too. Zoroark's got the better effects. Ditto's got the better tools. When one's gotta do their thing, the other can fill in as the "trainer." They'll be key to getting our guys where they need to go."[break][break]

"Klefki and Noivern can be our eyes. They've got the best eyes of our team, and when Noivern knocks 'em out, Klefki can patch their gear up so no damage shows. Leave it looking like an accident."[break][break]

"Same goes for Slaking and Falinks. If he puts someone to sleep, they can drag 'em away so nobody stumbles in and suspects a thing. With a whole regiment of them, we can also keep them active while making sure at least one's on hand to keep Slaking bright-eyed and bushy tailed."[break][break]

"That leaves Ralts and Emboar. They're the dream team. Brain and brawn. Something goes wrong and we need an out? They're our ringers. Don't think these guys are gonna have anything that can stand up to the two of 'em working in sync. And with Ralts' teleport, they can be anywhere we need them to be."[break][break]

The more Isaac said it, the more it sounded like the two of them could make a killer team. Maybe it was a good thing they were both the mermaid. Otherwise, there'd be something missing either way.[break][break]

Not that Isaac would ever admit it.[break][break]

As Summer scoffed at Isaac's last choice, he simple shook his head. "Don't tell me you're counting out a one-mon special effects team. Anything we do's gonna look better now, and who knows what kinda stunts we can pull off with their help? Add in your Vaporeon bringing the flash and the elegance, and boom. Another perfect duo."[break][break]

Phew! It was a lot of planning done, but it was so worth it. A satisfied silence settled over Isaac's half of the changing room. Or, at least, it did until one more question came to mind.[break][break]

"You having any luck getting this thing to fit? 'Cause, man, these tails are a pain in the ass."

Summer did have to admit, the kid had at least some amount of brain cells. His team composition wasn't terrible, and the pairings of his and her own Pokemon were pristine.[break][break]

"Not bad. Then how about we send them out while we perform this show and meet up with them after? We acquire the fossils and get the hell out of this place."[break][break]

As if to make an emphasis, Summer moved her legs that were encapsulated in the strange, flexible plastic fin, slapping on the ground.[break][break]

"I don't know how they expect us to move to the stage, but at least I'm in. Sounds like you're having a fun time over there," she teased.

[attr="class","skullbody"]"Now you're speaking my language." The teams were set. The plan was ready. Now all Summer and Isaac needed to do was put on a showstopper.[break][break]

Okay, first, they needed to find out how to exit these changing rooms in one piece. Luckily, Isaac had an idea. With a single lob of a Pokeball, his changing room was filled from top to bottom with fish.[break][break]

The door handle turned with surprising gingerness, making the way it practically exploded off its hinges all the more jarring. The Wishiwashi rolled out less in its usual schooling formation and more in the form of a giant tidal wave of fish. The literal wave crested on its way out, before finally parting to reveal who was sitting atop.[break][break]

Isaac's red longcoat hung open chested, perfectly complimenting the sunset tones of the tail he was wearing. His pirate hat was tipped ever so slightly to one side, the asymmetry helping balance out the eyepatch on the other end of his face. The battlescars from past Rocket missions and operations perfectly matched this new piratical ensemble, and the cocky grin he wore on his face tied the whole thing together.[break][break]

"If we're gonna be superstars, shouldn't we travel to fit the part?" Isaac asked. "Don't gotta figure out how to walk if Shiver here can just crowdsurf us to the curtain call."

Summer's partner grew very quiet. "Hello? What are you doing over there?" she called, twisting awkwardly in her chair. But there was not much available movement in the skin tight flipper encasing her legs. A heaving sigh left her lips, at least until she heard water.[break][break]

The door to her room opened, and she spotted Isaac beginning to drift by on a wash created by his WISHIWASHI. Honestly? It was ridiculous. But, there really wasn't a better option for either of them besides trying to hobble to the stage.[break][break]

Summer released her VAPOREON, who was all too excited to dunk into the water as well. She slipped in, her skin raising with goosebumps as she paddled her way over. Thankfully, the tail was easier to use to swim than she could imagine walking in.[break][break]

"I think this idiotic, but I suppose you have a point. Let's release our team to get the mission started and then get to the stage."[break][break]

She took her other five balls, releasing each of her Pokemon one by one. Reiterating the plan, she crossed her arms with a nod. "I think they're ready. Let's go."

Much like Team Summer, Team Isaac came popping out of their Pokeballs. With the plan given a quick debriefing, they each headed over to their designated partner. Everything had fallen into place. Everyone was in position. As Isaac and Summer faded from the changing room, the Pokemon would be free to scatter around and kick this mission into high gear.[break][break]

Now, sitting behind the show curtain, Isaac and Summer would simply need to have faith. Faith that their Pokemon could complete the mission, faith that they'd be able to put on a hell of a show to distract the crowds, and faith that their partner for the day wouldn't find a way to screw it all up.[break][break]

Luckily, there was a big, rambling preamble before the show started, because everything had to have Lore these days. That'd give the two some last moments to unwind.[break][break]

"Almost showtime, huh?" Isaac asked. "Ever done anything like this before?"
