As expected, the mention of food tapered off, making way for what was hiding behind the suggestion. Though he didn’t fully anticipate the deflection he was met with. It made sense when he thought about it, and knowing how Rook dampened himself to make himself more accommodating to others.[break][break]

But it didn’t convince Lam to think as much.[break][break]

“What?” A breath of incredulous laughter slipped out, and his hands remained planted against Rook’s cheeks. His thumbs skimmed back and forth over the warmth in his skin. For a moment, he pressed their foreheads together. “What d’you mean? Rook, you stood up for yourself—that’s far from nothing.”[break][break]

Lam sighed, hands sliding down to Rook’s shoulders, then pulled him into a hug. “Hey now, you never know what’s gonna happen.” Lam admittedly agreed with the sentiment. It didn’t feel like his father deserved the time of day. “He could come around.”[break][break]

While generally a sympathetic person, he didn’t have that same sort of patience to parents who didn’t give a shit. His own mother had left, and he sort of thought even that was better than the treatment Rook had suffered under his father’s frustrated guardianship.[break][break]

But it mattered to Rook. And that desire to mend something was far more admirable than the other might’ve realized. So he offered the hopeful suggestion because that optimism mattered more than his own petty resentment.[break][break]

That said, Lam wouldn’t sit by and let his father continue to hurt him if he opened the door again only to let him down at every turn.[break][break]

His arms remained fastened around Rook, forehead nuzzling against the crook of his neck.
