For the amount of effort it had taken to prepare everything that morning, he couldn’t help but feel a bit gladder than intended upon seeing the beachfront before him. Needless to say, the summertime heat had always been nothing short of blistering—especially within its seasonal apex—so once every so often, he thought of whatever events to aid the community. Water was a much-needed companion in times like the given, so what better way to give trainers and their Pokemon a break than a little water works?[break][break]

Cheap prices to both clean and rejuvenate Pokemon, with proceeds going to book charities.[break]
Volunteers being given free books for volunteering to help.[break][break]

A win-win situation, truly— and one he found himself engrossed within as he finally finished his rounds and found a moment to relax beneath one of the many gazebos for shade. Not too long after he’d sat back down, however, he’d only glanced to the side for a split second to see a blur rolling by, all before he gave a soft wheeze of equal parts confusion and shock as it bowled into his ankle.[break][break]

summer is busy. [break][break]

it's when most people are out and about, which means it's when daphne is most busy. with her packed schedule, she finds, it's difficult for her to even make time for family ( something that she'll be sad about, and lament over ). it's grounds for finishing her work sooner, and nothing can shake that resolve. [break][break]

... except for a spheal. [break][break]

a spheal who wished for the water, to an exhausting degree. at first, she wasn't going to pay it any mind. it wasn't until the little rascal went on a hunger strike did daphne finally cave, and bring the little gremlin out to the sea. at first, she thought that they were going to have fun in the water. she looks away for one moment, and the little blue ball is rolling its merry way away. [break][break]

... so, in short, she lost her child. [break][break]

said child running into a man, and aggressively clapping its fins in excitement before the trainer catches the rubbery blue. "there you are!" she calls out, (speed) walking to the pokemon who's.. found comfort on top of a man's foot. like a soccer ball. [break][break]

"i am so sorry--" she starts, crouching a bit to eye the spheal. she hasn't recognized the person she's speaking to, yet.

Honestly? Pain aside, the situation sprung onto him was at least a little bit endearing. His initial confusion shifted immediately and abruptly into amusement upon seeing the bulbous creature clap its fins against one another, all while both brows furrowed and lips tugged upward into a larger grin. The latter curled inward in an attempt to stifle himself as the little, fanged Pokemon simply rolled further onto his foot, claiming it as its seeming throne before long.[break][break]

He hadn’t minded being a seat for others in the past.[break]
This little thing was no exception— though the context drastically differed.[break][break]

Nevertheless, despite his musings, there begged a question: where was the trainer? His gaze shifted across the nearby surroundings for just a short while before noting a certain woman (sparingly, barely) hurrying over with a certain look on her face, and seeing said look had been all he needed to connect the dots.[break][break]

He chuckled, reaching down with a deftness to lift the ball-like creature onto his lap.[break][break]

”No need to be~,” he laughed, shaking his head as he peered down at the dual-typed Pokemon. ”They’re lovely. Very, very spry, too~.”[break][break]

the spheal was so happy. [break][break]

the trainer? not so much. not when she finds that the man who picked up her stray sea cat has taken a liking to it. the ball creature in his lap only blankly stares at her trainer and, if you lightly tap the top of its head, you can practically hear the hollow 'dong'. [break][break]

"rebellious might be a better word.." the trainer is left... slightly flabbergasted at the response. he doesn't bother to give the spheal back, and the spheal makes no effort to return to the trainer. "even so.." she grumbles, arms out to welcome the sea cat "come here, we can't bother others today." she was supposed to keep an eye on them, and this is what they do. [break][break]

and to make matters worse, the little guy has the audacity to look at her, blankly, before watching the fins go limp as it.. slouches in a man's lap? "are--" she starts, furrowing her brows, maybe suppressing the slightest smile of disbelief "are you using gravity as an excuse..?"[break][break]

the nerve.

Despite his earlier efforts to keep himself in line, he couldn’t help but laugh again at the Spheals antics.[break][break]

”Rebellion could be fun within reason, though~,” he chuckled, grinning while softly patting the limp creature again. He eyed its head for a while longer before looking back towards its trainer again. ”It doesn’t look like they mean much harm, anyway. A lot of people around here are working with water for an event, too— I wouldn’t blame ‘em if they just wanted to cool down~.”[break][break]

He eyed her for a little while longer before patting the spherical Pokemon absentmindedly, and—after remembering that he, in fact, wasn’t its trainer—curled his lips inward slightly to stifle another laugh before holding it up towards her.[break][break]

”...That aside, though—... Stone, right? Daphne?” the Rocket mused questioningly, tilting his head faintly all the while.[break][break]

there's cooling off, then there's.. this. [break][break]

she sighs in defeat, eyes narrowed slightly as she slowly reaches over to take the spheal out of the man's hands. though the rubbery pokemon tries, more desperately, to lean its weight into the trainer's hands, she manages to cradle the sea lion and lightly bonk it on the top of its spherical body. [break][break]

"behave." she huffs quickly, which prompts a soft whine from the baby pokemon. [break][break]

her thoughts are only interrupted when she hears her name called out and, for a brief moment, she felt her heart drop and body flinch. was she recognized? of course she was recognized-- he said her god damn name. wait, but if he knew who she was, then it means that she should know who he was, right? or maybe she didn't, and she just embarrassed herself by chasing her spheal out here-- [break][break]

oh who was she kidding? [break][break]

she's embarrassed herself either way. [break][break]

"y-yes..?" her voice starts with a soft crack, before she pulls herself back int composure, clearing her throat, and properly gazing up to take a look at the face she's been speaking to. [break][break]

it's only when the familiarity hits her does she remember. it's so vague, because she's only seen or heard of him few times, but now she's probably recognized now that she's gotten a better look. goodness, what was the name?[break][break]

Once the woman had taken her Pokemon back, he breathed a soft sigh of amusement, folding his hands in his lap as a gaze of azure strayed towards the numerous arrays of tubs and visitors he’d helped arrange and situate earlier in the day. He watched the lot of them with a faint smile upon his face before peering back towards her.[break][break]

”It’s good to see you’ve been well, though,” he went on, crossing his arms. ”I only barely remember the last time you met with my family. …Years ago by now, wasn’t it?”[break][break]

though she wants to say it, the name can't exactly leave her lips. her brows furrow, and she'll try to say it, but the sound seems to be caught in her throat. ".. novikov." she says instead, now to correct herself and to properly address. formality, no matter the environment, plagues her still. [break][break]

her arms instinctively tighten around the blubbery pokemon, who softly whines before a hand is raised to gently slap over the snout. "yes, a few years by now.." and back before her age accelerated due to the distortion; there was a time where she was younger than he. "it's truly a small world and coincidence." she tries to smile, naturally, yet finds it's as stiff as ever. [break][break]

her eyes narrow, though now it's a product of her own awkwardness. daphne was never one for small talk. [break][break]

He looked across the nearby beachfront for a few moments once more, pondering to himself at the sight of a few, free tubs beneath unoccupied gazebos. A soft hum escaped his lips before he turned his head towards both trainer and Pokemon once more, nodding towards those selfsame pools of water.[break][break]

”Volunteers get discounts from my store, customers get to cool their Pokemon down, and any proceeds go to charity.” His eyes fell upon the Spheal within her hold again, and he reached out to give it another, gentle pat before raising his gaze once more. ”You wanna take a round or two with your Pokemon~? Y’know, seeing how eager at least one of them seems to be.”[break][break]
