Careful. The singular word floated through his mind just as his foot nearly landed on a rock that had fallen in the path. Skirting it, he glanced to see Nicodemus acting as though he had not sent the warning. Impassive and haughty as ever, though the fact that he’d scarcely left Hazel alone both while he was at the hospital and after he’d left spoke loudly enough for the espeon. His free hand reached down to drift against one tall, lavender ear.[break][break]

Meanwhile, his herdier, Atticus trotted ahead of them dutifully—sniffing at the ground as his odor sleuth activated on the hunt for anything that might have been sneaking around.[break][break]

Hazel’s other hand, of course, was woven around Hugo’s. “It feels nice to actually be outside again,” he remarked quietly, smile soft as he looked up at the profile of his husband’s face. Even the gloom of the route stretching toward Mt. Pyre couldn’t be fully dulled by the warm, summer sun. And it beat the dreary wanderings down sterile halls during his hospital stay.

Hazel might have been ready for all of this, but Hugo wasn't sure that he was yet. To deny the other this freedom; however, felt cruel and he couldn't continue to bar Hazel from life. He'd be no better than Hazel's family, which was frankly fucking unacceptable. So, yeah, they were out for a walk. It was a little difficult not to act like things were on the brink of falling apart. His nerves were buzzing regardless of any attempt to steel himself. This wasn't a normal practice of his, he was aware. He wasn't typically an anxious person.

Still, there was color in the other man's face and his eyes were brighter. That had to mean something, even then he was a little hyper-aware of everything going on. It wasn't helping his anxiety, but at least he wasn't throwing a tsunami of concern on his husband.

"Yeah, it turned out to be a nice day... or as nice as Mt. Pyre can get." A little bleak, but still his kind of weather. It was just warm enough that he didn't have to worry if Hazel was too cold. He squeezed the other's hand.

He had yet to see if being released from his hospital stay was truly the victory he felt it was. The anxiety lingered, unspoken, in the back of his mind that it would be no more than a poisoned chalice, and that sooner or later he’d only grow ill again. Maybe worse than before.[break][break]

That wasn’t the perspective he wanted to tackle this with, though. Especially with Hugo, who he knew was still fretting despite his best effort to be supportive and positive about the whole thing. Hazel knew his partner had his reservations, but he really did feel well enough today. Better than he had in weeks. Maybe months, even.[break][break]

Hazel smiled as he glanced over at Hugo—his appreciation no doubt visible and transparent on his face. “Thank you for humoring me,” he commented quietly. A slowbro ambled onto the path and it felt nice to let a pokeball roll into the palm of his hand. Ready to throw as Nico knocked it on its pudgy side with a burst of swift stars.[break][break]

"Easy on me?" He huffed a small laugh. Leave it to Hazel to be concerned about him. "I wasn't... you don't need to worry about me, Haze. I'm just happy you're better." It hadn't been easy, but he'd not been the one ill this whole time. He diverted his attention on a banette in the distance. Dolly wouldn't be happy to be a part of a pair, but he couldn't help that he had a type. Before it could flee, he tossed a pokeball to catch.

He wasn't going to let himself imagine what if Hazel hadn't gotten better. It was a little alarming to realized he'd tied himself to a force in this world which would vanish before his eyes. The truth was, he didn't know what he'd do if that happened. He felt like he'd just slip away if Hazel wasn't with him. The dark truth of what he knew he'd do in response wasn't one he admitted to.

Though he suspected that Hazel knew as much. There were few things he was afraid of doing if driven to it.

Hazel leaned, head resting on Hugo’s upper arm as they walked. A soft smile fixed in place on his lips. “Of course I worry about you,” he retorted, “don’t be silly. You may not have been sick, but I know it’s still exhausting.” He’d have to be as blind as a zubat to not see the emotional burden it placed on Hugo. Particularly with the similarities to Lea. [break][break]
Ghostly pokemon flickered along the path. His herdier chased after them with excitable yaps, but they blinked away before he could catch any of them. Nicodemus, however, remained guard alongside Hazel. Reluctant to stray from him for very long.[break][break]
He watched Hugo catch the banette with a wrinkled nose. They were unnerving pokemon, though he was perhaps fonder of Dolly now after several years. He at least dealt with Dolly far better than the terse acceptance he shared with Mr. White. Hazel looked up at his husband, choosing his words carefully. “I thought that I might apply for sabbatical at work.” [break][break]
It seemed like a smart choice. An opportunity for continued rest. But also the chance for Hazel to work on his own interests.

Hugo smiled, drawing his fingers through Hazel's hair as his head rested against him. "Yeahhh, I guess you can be pretty exhausting." He chuckled at that. Hazel could be a bit much, even when he wasn't sick. He was finicky and opinionated, but Hugo loved every part of him. Even the parts he struggled to keep up with.

With the banette secured, he quickly followed up with another pokeball to catch a wandering Gastly. "A sabbatical?" He muttered in question, frowning in thought. "How come?"

Not that he was questioning Hazel's want, it was still odd of him. Hazel didn't do well outside of a working environment after all. Prying him away from his work was a chore in itself. After getting sick, Hugo only assumed the other was ready to get back to work.

[attr="class","text"]Hazel huffed, elbow jutting out to nudge Hugo in the side playfully. “That’s not what I meant, and you know it.” There was a mild smile on his face, but of course Hazel knew that it was technically true. Though it could be said that the contrary parts of Hugo’s personality that jarred with his own qualified as exhausting too, but Hazel had never really minded. Even when his partner made him want to tear his hair out, Hazel never truly disdained him.[break][break]
And in any case, Hazel was more inclined to pick at himself and the ways he might prove too overbearing. Usually after the fact, once his pride deflated.[break][break]
He watched as his herdier darted around in circles as he corralled a drifting lunatone. The moon-shaped pokemon simply floated there, not bothering to fuss at the yapping canine. Hazel soon threw a pokeball to relieve it.[break][break]
“Mhm,” he hummed in quiet response, grey eyes moving up to study Hugo’s profile. “It just seemed wise to continue resting,” he continued slowly, picking at his nailbeds. “And I thought it might be nice too, and perhaps helpful…if I took some time to focus on my own work rather than my course load.”[break][break]
Now was when his voice grew smaller, almost sheepish in nature, though he had no reason to be shy with Hugo. “You know, like we used to.” But therein lied the caution, he supposed. Their old jobs had always been interesting, but also more physically demanding and active. Even if only by a bit.
