"I would be happy to accompany you into the RKS Simulation," Nomi had replied to Yumi Hasegawa's inquiry about participating in the search for Arceus.[break][break]
As a Head Scientist, Nomi had taken it upon herself to lead as many expeditions into the simulated universe as she could, ensuring that those Rockets who wished to assist with the project could do so safely. Nomi had been surprised, at first, to hear that Yumi wanted to help; the Starlight Casino owner wasn't exactly a member of SPECTRA or any of Rocket's research-focused initiatives, but from what Nomi had heard from other Rocket leaders, Yumi was bold and clever.[break][break]
Yumi also happened to have some kind of history with parker jones, and Nomi wanted to get to the bottom of it. Parker, of course, had insisted on going with Nomi on her second journey into the machine, so Nomi merely added Yumi to their time slot.[break][break]
Perhaps she ought to have warned Parker that Yumi would be coming, but, well...it was easier this way.[break][break]
She was nothing if not a scientist invested in the results of experimentation.[break][break]
"Allright, here we go," she said, beaming at both Parker and Yumi as the machine fired up. "The first time can feel a bit jarring, but I assure you, it is safe."[break][break]
When they materialized inside of the simulation, Nomi found that she was back in the Ruins of Alph. Once more, something about the algorithm must had responded to her affinity for the Unown. Or so she assumed. Really, they had very little understanding of exactly how the Seal Stone's power worked.[break][break]
"Last time I was here, I advanced further into the cave," Nomi murmured to her companions. "But I'm curious what you two would like to do."[break][break]

parker bashed in GIDEON GRAVES's face for these seal stones. she hasn't thought about him in a while - not since the ultra deep sea skirmish (catto) - but nomi explained to her what this 'rks simulation' is and how it's here. parker doesn't trust it. she doesn't think it's a good idea to upload their consciousnesses or whatever the fuck is happening. trusting crazy tech found in the alt-dimensional pocket? no, thank you.

which is why parker has to go. because nomi's already been in there once without her bodyguard and that's a big no-no.

so she had been nervous. her leg wouldn't stop bouncing. she thought nomi was still settings things up, but that hadn't been the case. no, nomi had a surprise for her. and that surprise came in the form of yumi fucking hasegawa.

parker had paled. her smile had fallen. her face had flushed. she had shot a confused look at nomi, only to see her staring intently at her, and then she'd understood.

and now - now she's feeling like a rattata in a maze. is nomi the cheese? or is there no cheese? fuck, she's bad at metaphors.

nomi prattles on like she hasn't just entirely rocked parker's world. parker's face is carefully stoic. the alternative is a bloodied lip and fists in the nearest rock. that's the last thing she wants. especially in front of nomi. and fuck, in front of yumi too.

i'm curious what you two would like to do. parker looks sideways at her and grimaces.

"i'm not the brains here, nomi. just along for the ride." the words are bitter on her tongue, missing their usual sarcastic bite.

Yumi had spent many days after the operation at the Ancient Tomb contemplating Hitoshi Inoue's words. Twenty years. She did not know how the events he described could be real unless a Legendary Pokémon like Celebi had used its powers, she concluded. And if she was going to send Hitoshi into uncharted territory against them, she had to understand what they were up against.[break][break]

'They', because she and Hitoshi were a team, bound to each other in ways words could not express.[break][break]

So Yumi had reached out to Head Scientist Naomi Sato to request an exploration of the new RKS simulation. She recalled the woman from Casino Starlight's grand reopening, though her behavior hadn't matched with what Yumi had imagined of a Head Scientist. The Nomi who met her on the appointed day, however, looked every inch a professional. Yumi could appreciate that.[break][break]

What surprised her, however, was the arrival of a third party. Parker walked in with all her usual swagger, only to stop dead upon seeing Yumi's arched eyebrow. A cold satisfaction gripped the Johtonian then. She lifted her chin, haughty as ever.[break][break]

"Parker," was all she said in acknowledgement, not bothering to hide the iciness in her voice.[break][break]

The simulation felt so real that Yumi had to blink several times. Even the shade of the ruin was cool against her skin. "Fascinating," she murmured, unable to help herself. Only then did the noise begin, a jarring and unearthly sound.[break][break]

Pointedly ignoring Parker's comment, Yumi stepped toward the tunnel entrance. "In that case, Miss Sato, I'd like to see what's deeper in the cave, too," she said. "This is my first time, after all."[break][break]

Parker's acidic tone shocked Nomi, and she stared openly at the other woman with a hurt expression. Was Parker upset with her? For what, exactly? The usual distrust she harbored for the Unown, or...?[break][break]
A cold dread filled Nomi. Had she misread the situation with Yumi that badly? When they'd attended the party at Casino Starlight, Nomi had assumed Yumi was just another pretty face Parker might be swooning over, like the looming threat of Captain Dross. Parker had ultimately chosen to spend time with Nomi over Yumi, but that didn't mean much - Yumi had been the hostess of that party, busy all evening. Better to observe the two women together in a more private setting and find out for sure.[break][break]
It had never once occurred to Nomi that the history between Parker and Yumi might be a negative one.[break][break]
"You're never just along for the ride," Nomi snapped at Parker under her breath, feeling suddenly frustrated, a sharp defensiveness born from shame. Anger - at herself more than anything - bubbled to the forefront of her emotional landscape, and she hurried away from Parker to join Yumi further along the path leading deeper into the cave.[break][break]
"Very well, let us advance," she answered neutrally. "Perhaps it will be different this time."[break][break]

it kind of feels like it. parker stares at nomi's back after her muttering and has to take a breath. and another one. she didn't ask to be upset. she didn't ask for this. she could have apologized to yumi properly, and sooner, if she weren't so damned ashamed of herself.

but that doesn't matter now because nomi has flung her and yumi and their cufant all into one room. and, it seems, parker's the only one feeling bad about it. nice. cool. incredible. she loves this for her.

oh, and after following them through the simulation, she gets her ass handed to her by psychic force. she winces and then freezes; dozens of nomi's creepy eyes open up and parker thinks, when the fuck did you get this many? but then she remembers they're in a simulation and these are not, in fact, nomi's eyes.

it doesn't make them any less creepy. especially when they start to talk.

with only one option, parker dusts herself off and does as their floating little prompt says: flees. but she doesn't stray too far from nomi and yumi. she's here, after all, to protect them.

well, protect nomi.

The darkness engulfed them with a suddenness that startled Yumi. Her heart rate spiked as an overwhelming urge to flee filled her. But a force slammed her against a wall of the ruin before she could turn and run. For a simulated reality, the impact hurt so much; tears of pain pricked her eyes as she took a shaky breath.[break][break]

Then the eyes appeared. Dozens of them, too many for Yumi to count in one glance. A storm of voices hissing in unison filled her mind. The words were patchy, incoherent. All she knew was that she had to run.[break][break]

She pushed off the rocky wall behind her and raced in the same direction as Nomi and Parker.

One by one, eyes winked into existence all around Nomi and her companions, unblinking and ever vigilant. The Unown: all of them. The entire alphabet of symbols collected together.[break][break]
Which was, of course, extremely dangerous. Together, Unown could alter the very fabric of reality.[break][break]
And then - just like her first time walking further into the simulated Ruins of Alph - Nomi's back was slammed into the stone wall behind her as the Unown froze the three women in place with their psychic power. Already frustrated due to Parker's attitude - and her own embarrassing inability to understand people - Nomi grit her teeth and strained against her invisible bonds.[break][break]
De▉▉rt for our sake. you must w▉lk with us but lea▉e us. we r▉fu▉e the ou▉▉ide w▉rld.[break][break]
The same message as before. Nomi met the eye of the nearest Unown to her.[break][break]
"I've encountered many of you in Hoenn. What do you mean, refuse the outside world?" She asked them. "You speak in contradictions - " I'm just here to help - [break][break]
The urge to flee was too strong. It seemed to be her only choice. As Nomi was released from the wall, she realized Yumi was already running. The Head Scientist glanced at Parker, saw that her bodyguard was with her, and took off after Yumi.[break][break]
Vaguely, she registered the relief felt upon realizing that Parker did not intend to abandon her to the simulation's whims - no matter how annoyed she might be with Nomi.[break][break]
I'll fix this, she insisted to herself. The Unown. Parker. All of it.[break][break]

the whole 'scenario' shifting around reminds parker of teleporting. she does not care much for teleporting. so as they flee and the world folds over in on itself (hasn't she seen that happen before...?) and then rebuild, she looks a bit green around the gills.

she walks through the kneeling bodies of pokemon. after a moment's hesitation, she wanders closer to yumi. there is a tugging in her chest towards the tree and her gaze shifts from the woman and over to the bark.

but she's still here. she's still present.

"i'm sorry," she murmurs lowly. "y'wanted a friend and i was shit. an' i'll respect that an' leave ya alone, but i'd like to try again. the friendship part." her lips quirk. "kinda bad at makin' em, not gonna lie."

The darkness abruptly vanished, replaced instead with a massive tree and the kneeling forms of Pokémon all around its base. Yumi swayed on unsteady legs, adrenaline from her flight still coursing through her veins. She took several deep breaths to calm herself before looking around.[break][break]

The Pokémon were statues, she realized. Made of stone. She touched the head of one of them, its surface rough against her fingertips. A thought wriggled into her brain that maybe these Pokémon were not carved from stone at all, but were, in fact, petrified.[break][break]

So engrossed was she by this revelation that she didn't hear Parker's approach until the other woman spoke. Yumi looked up, startled. But as soon as she registered Parker's words, her brow furrowed once more, and her mouth flattened into a thin line.[break][break]

"I don't forgive easily, Parker," she said, mouth dripping acid. "You grossly misunderstood our relationship, and I have no reason to think you won't do it again."

Oblivious to the interaction taking place between parker jones and Yumi Hasegawa, Nomi gazed up at the hauntingly beautiful visage of the large, bone-white tree. The soft caress of a kindly voice in the back of her mind beckoned her closer.[break][break]
You seek Arceus, child?[break][break]
"Yes," Nomi murmured eagerly, her own voice sounding far away to her ears. She drifted between the stone statues of various Pokémon, expression completely devoid of the usual curiosity that might have spurred her to investigate what happened to them. Finally, she stood in front of the tree, crimson eyes wide and full of wonder.[break][break]
Please... the voice urged. Water...[break][break]
Nomi looked around, but there were no wells, pools, or fountains nearby. Very well, she would have to use one of her Pokémon. They'd traveled into the simulation along with her, after all. She pulled out a Pokeball and released Lilac. The red gem in the center of the Starmie's chest immediately began to glow.[break][break]
"Water," she commanded, pointing at the tree.[break][break]
The Starmie obeyed, using HYDRO PUMP to shower the tree. As soon as the water absorbed into the tree's bark, a loud crackling began to sound, and Nomi stumbled back in shock as one of the tree's branches suddenly whipped towards her...[break][break]

Curiously, these Pokemon feature brilliant markings that glow and glimmer beautifully in the dappled sunlight. Whether they were originally Illumina Pokemon or not is uncertain, but they shine bright with gratitude.
