For ten glorious, beautiful, life-changing seconds, Nomi thought maybe - just maybe - Parker was going to kiss her.[break][break]
Parker's mouth curled up in one of her signature delighted, utterly-self-satisfied grins as Nomi finished her confession: the ghost of the lady-killer smile she'd flashed when Nomi had told Cillian to shut up and trust her. Parker was leaning in, looking at Nomi like she wanted to grab her across the table, hands twitching as if she might actually do it. The hungry - starving - expression on Parker's face sent a thrill through Nomi and she leaned in too, because she'd been daydreaming about this a million different ways, and yet - [break][break]
This isn't how it happens.[break][break]
Nomi faltered, a sharp pain in the middle of her temple causing her to wince.[break][break]
And then there was blood, so much blood, which caused Nomi to yelp in surprise. The worst nosebleed she had ever seen anyone suffer was happening to Parker, and the other woman was scrambling to contain it, her fingers now an angry red and her eyes wild with pain and confusion. Panic clawed at Nomi's chest, driving away the giddy joy of almost-being-kissed.[break][break]
"Isaac!" Nomi called out to him. "Napkins! Towels! Anything! Please. Hurry!"[break][break]
And then, because everything she'd said about Parker had been heartfelt and true, Nomi slid out of the booth and dashed around the table and did not hesitate for even a second to grab the single surviving napkin from their nacho dinner and press it to Parker's face. There was a specific spot right above a person's teeth that needed pressure during a nosebleed; Nomi wasn't a doctor, but she knew enough about the human body to be able to help in a crisis.[break][break]
"Hey, it's allright," she reassured Parker in a soothing tone, crawling into the booth with her and trying to keep her head steady. "Just stay calm."[break][break]

Luckily, with the amount of nacho that Nomi seemed ready to pound down, Isaac had already come prepared with a ton of napkins on hand. The world was barely out of Nomi's mouth before she was given a solid handful of them by Isaac.[break][break]

Why did he give them to Nomi? On one hand, she knew anatomy better than he ever could. Two people trying to deliver first aid at the same time would just end up tripping all over each other and crowding the victim they were trying to help.[break][break]

It also meant Nomi could be up close and personal with Parker. Priorities, people![break][break]

"Easy, guys. Easy. You're gonna be okay." Nomi would figure it out. Isaac didn't have a doubt in his mind. For now, he just needed to help keep them calm along the way. That was easier with help. With a quick lob on the nearby floor, Isaac's Pokeball opened into a curious looking Shaymin. "Dandori, give 'em a hand here, please?"[break][break]

The Shaymin toddled over to the two, tilting his head as he looked at Parker's strange panic. Perhaps Nomi would recognize him. Perhaps she'd be too worried to notice. Whatever the case, the hedgehog gently nestled against Parker's side, letting out reassuring squeaks all the while.[break][break]

A Sweet Scent, soft and calming, began to waft from his blooms. It wasn't much, but at least it might help calm the two as they rode through this sudden panic attack.

what the fuck is going on? her eyes are unfocused and there's no pain in her nose, which doesn't make sense, because the rivers hath runneth red, but her brain feels like it's splitting open. like it's peeling apart or there are bugs crawling under the surface, digging and burrowing and searching and grasping and - fuck, it hurts.

but she can't stop it. she can't stop thinking about it. there are wispy images on the other side, the answers to all of nomi's questions. glimpses of her notebook. the ring parker wears on her neck. a small field of strawberries, crawling with vines.

gloom and shadow and twisted bodies. rat boy? skyler?

the nomi here, on this side, is pulling relentlessly at her. murmuring hushed worries and telling her it's going to be okay while she calls isaac over. her warmth is next to her, pulling her back. reeling her away from the glimpses like a flopping fish.

through the blood, there's the scent of flowers. watercolor rain falls over her lashes. not yet. don't take me back yet. i don't want to forget.

she crashes back down with a shudder and her hand comes up over nomi's. carefully, she works to take over the pressure on her own nose. slouches back and tilts her head back to help stopper it.

the pain is a loud, incessant thud in the back of her skull.

"so, you wanna stay for dessert?" she says, voice all nasally and thick.

Of course she wanted to stay for dessert. Not because she needed dessert, but because she was loath to leave Parker alone with her bloody nose and troubled expression. Not because dinner dates often ended in dessert, but because she didn't want the date to end, period. It had only just started, hadn't it? She'd been given a second chance, and she'd felt so sure things were about to work.[break][break]
Nomi hesitated. Everything felt jumbled, and she felt exhausted. The date had been a rollercoaster of emotions - the ups and downs of fumbling through the start of a relationship. One second, things had been going great. The next, Parker had retreated to the bathroom in a panic. Then Isaac had saved everything, because that's what Isaac did, and things were great again. And then, when it seemed like they might actually, maybe, finally kiss - [break][break]
It all went to hell.[break][break]
Except...there was something comforting beneath the despair threatening to demoralize Nomi: as if she were looking through a cloudy window and just making out shapes behind it - shapes that looked like her and Parker holding hands, holding each other, locked together in an intimate dance. It didn't make any sense but it also made so much sense.[break][break]
"I want to stay but...I also want you to feel better," Nomi answered truthfully. "If you need to go home and rest, that's okay."[break][break]
And it was okay.[break][break]
Nomi pulled her hand away - reluctantly, gingerly - and sat back in the booth. She gazed at Parker with adoring crimson eyes for several long seconds before turning to Isaac.[break][break]
"Do you do dessert to go?" She asked, a small smile breaking through like a single ray of sun through dreary clouds.

parker doesn't know how to explain to nomi that she's only going to feel better if she's away from her, but also she'll feel like absolute shit if she's away from her. that's the kinda crazy stuff you don't mention on the first date, which they've finally established is what this is. took them long enough to get there.

maybe this is karma finally having its way with her. parker's busted so many damn noses, the universe is just giving her nosebleeds to make up for it. maybe she hit someone with the mark of cain and now she's gonna get nosebleeds for seven more years. or is that mirrors? has she broken any mirrors lately?

"y'know, 'least ya can tell people y'made me swoon so hard you gave me a nosebleed," she says, still muffled. she doesn't dare remove the pressure off the napkins.

her front is slick with blood. her hands are crimson. it's not an unusual sight for her, but usually it's someone else's blood on her hands.

"i'll just do my best not to bleed on the second date."

You're the one who makes me swoon, silly, she almost replied. But then Parker said the words "second date" and Nomi perked up, eyes shining, smile widening despite their current circumstances.[break][break]
"You promised you'd come with me to Meteor Falls," Nomi reminded her, pleased. She'd texted Parker bikini selfies and everything. "That can be our second date."[break][break]
The word date didn't seem so scary anymore. In fact, to the outside perspective - say, Isaac's - it had likely been obvious all-along that these two women were already well past the point two people needed to get to in order to be considered "dating." All the same, Nomi relaxed, her initial anxieties fading, the fear of rejection ripped violently from her body like an exorcism.[break][break]
"Let me help you get home," Nomi insisted. She had Pokémon that could teleport, and the Unown were always able to get pretty much anywhere. She got out her purse and began rummaging around for her wallet, more than happy to pay Isaac for their meal and drinks. As she did so, it occurred to her that she had never seen Parker's apartment before. Which felt odd, considering Nomi could picture what it might look like - or rather, what living with Parker might be like.[break][break]
Another sharp pain in her temple. Nomi paused, wondering if the Clamperl nachos hadn't been the best idea after all.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Against all odds, and despite the hand of God trying to sabotage things by exploding Parker's face, their date night was a huge success. For starters, they actually agreed it was a date. Progress![break][break]

Watson toddled out from the back of the Howling, bringing out a little sample platter of various fruity sorbets. It almost looked like the Totodile was carrying an easel. "Here you go," Isaac said, presenting the little platter with a flourish. "Small enough to take on the road, and cold enough to get those blood vessels pinching up. Not a bad note to end your date on, yeah?"[break][break]

He couldn't hide the pride in his smile as he said those words. Nomi was a dear old friend of his. Parker was a new one that he'd immediately gelled with. Seeing them happy made him happy.[break][break]

It was also nice knowing they'd be in good hands. He'd have to go soon. When he did, he had no idea if he'd ever see them again.[break][break]

"It was great hosting you guys tonight. Now, you guys make it home safe, alright?" He wasn't going to steal Nomi's thunder and offer them a ride home. He'd already been Just present enough tonight. The post-date walk home was a time-honored tradition to decompress, talk, and bare their hearts away from the world's prying eyes. He wasn't going to interfere, not even through offering a Corviknight taxi.[break][break]

Besides, by shifting the issue to their exit, maybe they wouldn't realize they hadn't paid yet. The least he could do after this face explosion was let them enjoy a free date.

too bad parker wouldn't know sacrilege if it bonked her on the head. the same goes for what's expected on a proper date. really, with her nose plugged, she's thinking, well, isaac's still here and it's early enough she doesn't want to make nomi feel like she just has to go home or whatever.

they can hang out. and parker will be jealous, yes, but she'll manage. because isaac's a cool dude. and because he's taken. and because he's spent all night being good to them. being good to her.

parker grabs his wrist as he goes to set the sorbet down. "naw, night's still young. you two share dessert. i'm gonna go get all cleaned up." she lets him go, places that bloodied hand on nomi 'cause she's pretty sure nomi doesn't give a damn about it.

"you just let one of your lil' eyeball freaks send me back and i'm gonna clean up 'n put some frozen peas on my face. and then i'm gonna see ya in that cute bikini this weekend, 'kay?"

point to note though - she completely forgets they're supposed to pay. so at least you get away with that one, isaac!

Nomi stared down at the bloody hand covering her own, an unexpected warmth surging through her at the physical contact. Parker was right; a little blood - well, even a lot of blood - had never bothered Nomi. What did bother her was the thought of Parker going home alone, which was perfectly logical given the circumstances and yet...I should be going with her.[break][break]
But she didn't. Because it wouldn't really make a whole lot of sense for her to say something like, "I know I've never been to your apartment before, Parker, but I feel like I'm usually there, especially when you're injured or sick." Except, that wasn't true at all...?[break][break]
Nomi's head hurt.[break][break]
She smiled through it, though. "Isaac has a Ralts that can teleport," Nomi suggested, knowing Parker didn't exactly love the Unown. "Can Echo take Parker home?" Please? Her eyes begged. She didn't want Parker to have to go through yet another awkward, uncomfortable ordeal because of her.[break][break]
Then Nomi registered Parker's quip about the bikini and immediately perked up again. "Oh, yes!" She beamed. "The lake! Yeah, I'll see you then. I'll text you the directions later."[break][break]
Crimson eyes lingered on Parker, concerned for her, adoring her, and then she, reluctantly, because it was how this had to go, turned her attention to the assortment of sorbet and let Parker go.

We both know Parker's the toughest cookie out there," he said, making sure his tone was warm and even while Parker was still lingering around. "Don't get me wrong. Echo'd love to give her a hand if she needed it-" The Ralts appeared right on cue, shooting Isaac and Nomi a big, goofy salute. "-but if she wants to get some fresh air on her own, I trust her."[break][break]

If anything, he felt bad for anyone who thought she was easy pickings.[break][break]

It wasn't until Nomi let Parker go and she was out of earshot that Isaac turned to her. " 'Course, if you're still worried, I can always have Echo shadow her," he said, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "We respect her autonomy. You get your peace of mind. Win-win, don't'cha think?"[break][break]

"Or, y'know. You trust the girl that stole your heart, catch her on bikini night, and enjoy a bit of sorbet. Your pick."[break][break]

A last little deal with the devil for the road. What a cheeky way to remind Nomi what was truly important in life.

The sorbet was good. The right balance of sour and sweet. Exactly how the date had gone, she supposed.[break][break]
Nomi considered Isaac's words. It was another thing she couldn't quite explain; the desire to know for certain that Parker would be okay. As if she had some unhinged anxiety about something terrible happening to the other woman. She wasn't going off to war, just getting home to her own apartment in the wake of a bloody nose. Parker was tough, and she could take care of herself just fine.[break][break]
"I trust her," she told Isaac, meaning it. "I merely wanted to offer her a quicker way home. But...she'll be fine." She smiled as if to emphasize that she really did feel good about the decision.[break][break]
She paused, meeting his gaze.[break][break]
"Thank you again," she told him. "For doing this. For all of it. You're a really good friend, you know that, right?"

It was also all too true for Isaac, too. There had been a lot on his mind as of late. Not a lot of it was stuff Nomi could help out with. In fact, if anything, it was the exact opposite. Nobody in Rocket could learn his doubts. Nobody in Rocket could learn his fears. Nobody in Rocket could learn his secret duty.[break][break]

He knew they'd never forgive him for freeing Caleb Harcourt from his fate.[break][break]

"Hey, what else are friends for?" he said. He knew, even if Nomi could never help him with this deepest, darkest secret, she'd fall over herself to help him out with anything else in the meanwhile. She was a good friend. Loyal. Kind. Sharp as a whip and surprisingly charming.[break][break]

Arceus, leaving her behind was going to be the hardest part of all of this.[break][break]

"You're one of the best I could ever ask for, y'know," he admitted, knowing he'd have precious little time left to let her know of that fact. "I know you're still trying to figure out the whole social thing, but. The people you let in are lucky to have you. Parker most of all. So make sure you pop out of that lab every now and then and give 'em a chance, yeah?"[break][break]

With any luck, she'd be well taken care of when he was gone.
