the last time he had been in this scenario, Elisabeth Fiorelli wanted to thrash the place. ultimately, it revealed a secret that felt too silly to comprehend

this time, jayden offers him a solution he had wanted to try before then.

"well, i ain't the most versed in this kinda shit..." his apparent humility is short-lived. "-but i sure as hell am a genius! this is a piece of cake compared to that mecha t-tar i tried to fix!"

the said animatronic was now almost a pile of trash, saved only by the previous head scientist, from which priam learned some of his basic electronic skills from.

he looks around the room and finds the tools to disassemble the device on the same workbench. upon opening it, he finds out it has the most basic layout of commercial devices out there.

"huh? it's like they wanted us to fix this!"

the fix was as simple as replacing a single component hidden in the sea of parts that any untrained eye wouldn't spot. it was clear it was burnt though, and anyone with simple knowledge of electronics would be able to fix it.

priam quickly finishes up, tossing the pokegear back to jayden as soon as he takes the screws back in place.

"hah! i'm so good at this i should be a scientist."

he can't since he doesn't even have a degree, let alone a high school diploma.

Degree or not, Jayden knows priam conrad to be a genius. It doesn't surprise him in the slightest when the other is able to quickly find the cause of the issue and return the PokeGear to it's proper state.

[break][break] Still, the unusual symbol on it's front continues to wear at him. The overlapping hexagons was something familiar yet unknown. Something he felt like he should have known, but somehow didn't.

[break][break] It was then that the voice rang out, clear and true. A chill ran down his spine. Malcedena.

[break][break] Jaw locked, the Admin twists sharply on his heel in an attempt to find the source of the voice. But alas, there was nothing. Just that empty space between them, and the nothingness that followed. His fingers clutch tight around the device.

he's only read the name on reports, and now he knows what he sounds like. the message doesn't seem as eerie anymore since priam had the alternative ending the first time around.

"oh, about that-!"

he wanted to tell jayden that they wouldn't be able to show it to the head scientist regardless since physical objects in the simulation can't be brought to the real world.

the words did not manage to leave his mouth since the shift starts to happen. he would find out sooner or later anyways, given that it's likely the admin was only acting out of habit.

he supposed he can suggest to draw the symbol from memory later instead.

Priam's right. Jayden's only acting from muscle memory so that when he steps into the next simulation, the handheld object that had felt so real at the moment was gone from his grasp. Slipped through his fingers like stardust.

[break][break] His head swivels sharply to that of declan walsh. His eyes widen. The mark around his arm begins to burn, lashing out in painful waves. A reminder.

priam's espeon escapes from its ball and protects the pair from any warning shots that the rocket boss's pokemon had fired at their direction.

the sensation was familiar. this is the environment either of them grew up from, after all. although fuschia was not one of the cities priam had particularly spent most of his time at, the atmosphere was undeniably similar to one that was burned to his head.

his chest beats fast. his feet were frozen. it's only jayden's words, alongside the espeon brushing past his feet, that moves the grunt from his position.

"y-yeah. let's do that."

conditioning has done the worst on both of them. the courage to face even gods dissipate against the hierarchy of ranks. turning around and running away was the only option priam could force himself at the moment.

For people like him and priam conrad, there isn't any choice.

[break][break] However, the simulation seems to think otherwise. Gliscor wings shatter against the invisible walls, mimicked by the reflective "Walshes" that appear before them.

[break][break] Jayden knows it's unreal, but he can't help but turn tail and run. Moments later, when they're away from the terror of the very thing that raised them, the Admin turns to priam conrad.

would they be able to fight even if they were forced to?

priam isn't sure. indoctrination has taken over logic at this point for people like them who spent their entire childhood under rocket regime. the title, alone, leaves them incapacitated from fear.

they escape the scenario instead of experiencing something new, knowing that they wouldn't be able to fight their nature without much effort being exerted.

"at least the next thing can't be that bad, right?"

the setting changes, and the simulation presents them with another scenario.

he supposed this doesn't matter to him anymore. legends aside, priam doesn't have any sort of ideals to stand up for despite acting like the embodiment of someone who has a lot of it.

"we're in rocket anyways," he jokingly mentions as he sends out a pokemon. "personally, i'm not sure if i'm supposed to have ideals anyways."

the braviary comes out and fires off its strongest move towards the zekrom.

this is what they are: just extensions of the boss' ideals rather than their own. it's not that priam sides with the truth more, though he chose the same every time he got this scenario in the simulation, but rather, it's easier to deny the other choice in his situation.
