WHETHER IT WAS DISPLACED BENEATH LITTLEROOT DUE TO DIMENSIONAL ENTANGLEMENT, BROUGHT BACK TO FUNCTIONING ORDER DUE TO DIALGA, OR BOTH, can not be determined. However, this kingdom made entirely out of intricate mechanisms is void of human life. Clockwork gears, iron tunnels, and curious domes make up this kingdom that continues to function like an animatronic music box.[break][break]

Mechanical Pokemon like Magearna, Volcanion and others present in the kingdom seem to be robotic, set to a rhythm or programming like an animatronic figure.[break][break]

Several clock towers loom above the entire kingdom, though their machinery seems to be in disrepair.

chancing upon a train, kyle realizes that traversing the mechanical kingdom was going to be much easier than the borders had been. besides, it would make sectioning his maps easier if it had stations.

they reach the first stop, and kyle steps off alongside noah. it felt surreal that he was living a post-apocalyptic isekai dream in an unpopulated city, minus the fact that he was actually in any danger of survival-related problems

"do you ever wonder who runs these things?" he asks. "everyone's kinda dead after all."

the only things that moved within the mechanical kingdom were the volcanion guardians they found before. while he may have faced a sentient one outside of the kingdom, the ones they saw here seemed like they aren't.

he gives both of them time to take a gander at the station's aesthetics before he offers noah a direction.

"want to take a nice stroll in these romantic city streets to admire the archiecture of the cultural mechanical kingdom?" like a date. "then we'll do the same again on the next stop."

noah wonders too. there is little life here, and what does move are suggestions of what once was. metal limbs creak and groan, but there is no voice. just shrapnel.[break][break]

"guess it's sorta romantic." the gym leader says. in the distance, a steam station toots and sputters. he grabs kyle's hand, giving it a squeeze as he guides him further down the street. "kinda feels like we're the only one left in the world we gotta repopulate it oh no!!"[break][break]

he jokes and touches what appears to be an oil lamp fixture affixed to the outside of a tavern. it creaks too. the metal arm it hangs from snaps.[break][break]

glass shatters as the lamp strikes the cobblestone and from it, a small light whisks away into the air.[break][break]

"i didn't do it."

his hand absently reaches for the wisp, grabbing the air as it moves past his arm's length.

"huh? weird." kyle moves to examine the broken lamp. "i've seen something similar at the border, and they didn't act like this."

he recognizes them. souls.

they had previously hounded him during his first trip at the borders, protected from them only by the activation of the sygna suit. kyle doesn't have it online at the moment, but the reaction from a similar entity doesn't apply.

"back then, souls kept bugging me to get revived," he explains to noah. "i wonder if you really broke them or if they were just like this from the start."

he would reach for his smeargle's ball, but he figured he might as well wait until it gets worse.

"let's find a large house, like a mansion or something," he proposes. "it'll kinda be like ghost hunting. something like that's the best place for it, yeah?"

noah grimaces, teeth clenched at the prospect as if to keep his own soul inside.[break][break]

"maybe they're different kind of souls. kinda glad it didn't bug you 'cause damn, that's a lot of pressure dude." [break][break]

he peers down the road. the kingdom is a shadow box labyrinth of cogs and spires. metal wheels gyrate like rusted suns cycling endlessly into a dilapidated horizon.[break][break]

"there's a mansion over there. i think?"[break][break]

noah points toward a larger home set on a higher level of the city. a round tower section connects two parts of the building together, setting apart dormer windows and steep roofs.[break][break]

"y'know, when a couple enters a haunted house it never ends well for them."

"souls in general," he corrects, "but they acted like they were trapped in a lamp anyways, so i suppose it's the same."

he wonders if there's a difference. the borders did seem closer, more personal, to hoenn than the mechanical kingdom was.

noah eventually finds the building for them. it's the perfect setting for ghost hunting, or in their case, souls. the exterior feels perfect, pairing well with the movie-esque scene that noah had described.

"yeah, but they get a happy ending where everything resolves itself anyways." he turns to noah. "do you want a happy ending?" he asks.

he's distracted by the shifting from the mansion's gates. he flinches for a moment, recognizing the source of the shuffling from a distance, and eases when he realizes that the guardian wasn't moving the same way as the one they encountered before.

"they have a guard dog too?" kyle hastens his pace to approach it, briefly meeting eyes with it before it shuts down. "oh."

he holds his hand against its cold plating. revival doesn't occur, for it is nothing but clockwork.

"you're watching different movies then 'cause the couples always die." noah raises an eyebrow and like a marionette his lips are pulled into an amused curl too. "usually in the middle of their happy ending, man."[break][break]

upon encountering the volcanion remains, the gym leader's hand immediately snaps to his pokeball. but it happens all too fast. any life, any movement, it all stiffens into metal bones.[break][break]

"probably actually was a guard dog." noah pushes his shoulder against the old doors and with a grunt, forces them open. [break][break]

inside, a fanciful lobby awaits them. a wide staircase leads into the upper floors while hallways stretch east and west. however, a large slide of debris blocks the westward branch. noah calls upon his machamp. realizing the sheer magnitude of debris that has fallen here, he MEGA EVOLVES his partner, the stone on his wristband blaring bright.

"it seems like a chore to clean." the first thought about a large house was the amount of work needed to keep it tidy. "not to mention how difficult it would be to find things the dogs would be hiding."

as noah's pokemon clear the rubble and debris, kyle watches the corridor come to view. multiple rooms beyond it take kyle's attention, giving them the glory of being the first rooms they investigate.

"we could get a big house, but," kyle opens the door to the first room, "do you really want cleaners to come every so often? i'd rather it be just you and me, to be honest, hehe."

what greets them is a room of soulless pokemon that look like they're perfect for a housemaid job. a music box atop a table was on the far end of the room. still, it's the focal point, and it draws the champion in to reach for it.

his first reaction was, of course, to play it. as soon as the first note comes out, every magearna in the room start moving, only stopping when kyle does.

"wait..."

out of curiosity, he keeps playing. surprisingly, they all pick up brooms and other cleaning materials and get out of the room to work. kyle follows outside, hands still playing the music box he found.

"you're so right, man. 'sides the dogs would have to get used to the cleaners coming in and out." [break][break]

noah's machamp claps its hands together. content with its work, the amber gilding its palms and forearms begins to fade as it reverts to regular form.[break][break]

with kyle as conductor, the music box's tinny melody draws the pokemon outside. noah and his machamp watch incredulously and stand still as they are paraded out.[break][break]

noah's sneakers kick old bolts and dusty splinters as he enters the room. inside, a painting rests above an extinguished, dusty fireplace. set in an old, golden frame, a bright red magearna is held by a mysterious young child.

he calls out to kyle: "ever like, fancy the idea of getting one of those pretentious oil paintings done of you?"

he resigns himself to playing the music box. the moment he stops would be the moment the magearna around them ceases function. at the moment, kyle doesn't see a reason why they should.

"i like my scrapbook-style of randomly pinning polaroids on the wall better," he answers honestly. "candid shots are way better than these."

that wasn't mentioning the fact that loud pictures such as these just weren't kyle's style.

the longer he stares at the photo, the more he realizes the reality of this world. he looks around, and underneath the grime and dust, he sees a coat of pastel pink paint and carpet that fits a little girl's room.

"would you get one for your room?" kyle asks the question back to noah, but with an added premise. "cause this is definitely that girl's room, i think."

a doll sits by their feet. a whirring of a magearna's mechanical limbs sound louder as one of them start approaching the room.
