it's the last day of the carnival and kyle somehow gets an invitation from his friend, fernando silph, to accompany him to one held at lilycove.

maybe he still doesn't know the proper etiquette since he lived a sheltered life, or maybe he just wants someone to accompany him because all his friends were categorized as friends with quotation marks. either way, kyle meets him at the entrance.

"i didn't know you were excited about rides and games," he comments as he greets him with a wave. "or are you just waiting for another blacephalon thing to happen again?"

his eyes move to the nearest commotion near them, with audience starting to get loud as the contest goes underway.

"we can play that one if you really like the games," he offers jokingly. kyle wouldn't want to play any physically strenuous games, and he's banking on fernado moving on soon.

the next match was looking for the next batch of players, and hopefully, the eyes don't notice them as potential contestants.

“ASTUTE OBSERVATION,” is as vague an answer as he can give. it doubles as a compliment, able to curtain a conversation that no longer has a need to be said.

their walk steers them to a local DUGTRIO-RING-TOSS stall. it goes without question that fernando sponsors their tickets.

“have a lot of people met you as their hero, lopez?”

there’s no need for him to close one eye to aim. he’s already built that way. however, it doesn’t alleviate the fact that his ring doesn’t land perfectly. his aim is as true as his pokeball throw, unfortunately battles don’t rely on pokeballs landing from a vertical drop.

instead, they play a less taxing game of ring toss. kyle played these a lot during festivals and other carnivals held around hoenn in his childhood.

"not really," he answers.

he takes his aim right beside fernando on a different set of dugtrio-ring-toss game. he feels the weight of the ring, and then the material, before tossing it over to the target.

"or i guess it's because it's easier to pick out the louder celebrities in the crowd than the one trying to be discrete." his ring hits the target. "it also helps that i've been stuck doing office work the past few days."

with enough practice tossing frisbees and balls for dogs, kyle manages to guide the trajectory of this throws easily.

FERNANDO TOSSES ANOTHER. this time he mimics the motion of kyle’s wrist. again, it falls flat. well, quite the opposite since that would lead to his win.

he throws a few more out in rapid succession. only two of them land, losing him the overall challenge but earning him a consolation prize.

“i assume you’re trying to stay under wraps then?”

naturally, he picks out a small poochyena keychain stylized after their champion: kyle lopez.

winning the game earns him a pack of stickers, which are subsequently given more value when they come with a ball capsule. being revealed as seals then explains why they're the better prize than keychains.

"people keep reminding me i have work to do when they see me have fun," he explains. "it wouldn't make sense for them why our elite four have a lot of things on their plate while the champion lounges around, wouldn't it?"

his eyes cross a taurus-rodeo game. he's not much for physical activities for today, so he avoids his gaze at it, hoping it wouldn't attract the attention of the person he's with.

instead, he busies himself with sticking his mightyena's pokeball inside the ball capsule and sticking his hard-earned seals on it.

NATURALLY, he has no need for the charm. trinkets and other decore amount to little more than junk. which is why his home, gym, and office reeks of a minimalist that’s so bare it borders psychotic.

which leaves him to hand his hard earned consolation prize over to kyle.

“they have yet to prove themselves,” he says with dismissive reassurance. “but you have withstood the test of time, relatively, i suppose.”

“when we have a complete elite four that has reached half your tenure, then you should be worried about your productivity.”

the cheers from the taurus-rodeo game eventually die off as they walk away from it. deeper in the carnival, they are met with more games, each with a carnie that invites prospective players to their booths.

"what's the point of proving themselves?" he asks. "they just need to do their jobs. all these 'proving' just results to the opposite."

the elite four weren't the only ones who were guilty with it. from officials to random trainers from the street, hoenn was full of these people. kyle knew more of them than he could ever realize.

"ah. my bad. i forgot it was rhetoric of me to ask."

kyle doesn't provide further context, but it was literally just one person who kept using it in their conversations. he does live with someone who strives off of routines and strict regimen, but at least he gets spoiled by that one.

he takes fernando's attention to a magikarp fishing game. last year had a fishing game as well, though it wasn't limited to just magikarps.

as two of the tallest men in hoenn, the pond seems far beyond their reach. the rim sits at their shins but even that is far too low for such strapping and buff characters. thankfully, they’re also flexible since they are adequate or better in all aspects.

the math gets calculated in his head.

he tries to count the fishes as well, but it's difficult to do when they're all moving. the math checks out. it's an almost impossible feat that is akin to rolling the same number twice in a row.

fernando ponders for a moment, taking his time to consider, and finally answers, “five.”

a child, who participates as well, pisses themselves from waiting for his answer. but what they cry about isn’t the warm liquid running down their leg. no, it’s that the carnie is too kind in letting fernando take his time to answer. a tantrum that, while humorous, outstays its welcome as does the child.

which, in their defense, may have some validity. after all, fernando lands the correct guess.

losing was the least of kyle's worries. what bothers him more is the child standing on its own puddle of urine.

part of its tantrum involves lying on the ground, which is now wet with yellow liquid. her clothes get drenched as she proceeds to flop on the ground like a magikarp.

just like one particular gif that kyle found on the internet.

"it's the magikarp splash," he points out. the next second involves kyle realizing the reality. "er, do you want to get your prize now, fern?"

kyle would rather not stay if he can.

the child feels like it's drowning.

like a surfer with a failed attempt at a magikarp splash trick on top of a mantine, her psyche drops to the bottom of the void. metaphorical bubbles float up as she feels herself slowly drown in a sea of sorrows.

her life flashes before her as she suffocates from the immense feeling of dread- her family dying from an unrelated event to those that happened on hoenn, her honor tarnished and her pride spat on by those above her, and basically her entire life crumbling that led her to this very moment.

this is her lowest. failing at something related to magikarp would end her only chance of redemption in life.

"see? you still got the prize," kyle tells the girl. "no need to cry in your own puddle."

in the end, it doesn't even matter. whether she won or lose was a worthless endeavor that only served to destroy any thread of sanity she has left. there's only void left in her empty heart as she reaches for the prize left for her by the councilman.

she thinks to herself that maybe she really did deserve to lose herself to sorrow.
