Normally, Yumi had no reason to travel all the way to bumfuck nowhere Littleroot Town. However, the Magnificent Funtasia had traveled there, and several members of Team Rocket had mentioned going. One of them was Tempest Quinn, who she remembered from the time they explored Ultra Crater together.[break][break]

Yumi had already been there for a little while when she finally spotted the tall, brown-haired man. She quickly paid for the Fennekin-shaped balloon she'd picked out and approached him.[break][break]

"There you are! Good afternoon," she said with a smile, avoiding speaking his name. She wasn't sure if he went by an alias in public. "How have things been? I feel like I haven't seen you in ages."

Tempest, for his part, had been mostly zoned out. One of the nearby attractions was a tug of war contest. Temp didn't plan on participating himself, he didn't want to dirty his clothes right now, but watching had been entertaining. Seeing the people lining up, usually to impress whoever they were wish, was pretty funny.[break][break]

He almost doesn't notice Yumi Hasegawa at first, until she speaks.[break][break]

Tempest blinks at her, a little dazed, before recognition clicks in his eyes and his whole face lights up.[break][break]

"Oh! It's good to see you!" Much like Yumi, he's careful of using names. You never knew who could be listening.[break][break]

"You here by yourself?" Temp was already glancing around, perhaps to spy Hitoshi Inoue milling somewhere about in the crowd.

Yumi shook her head. "My friend is around here somewhere, but I don't have to hang out with him all the time," she replied. "Want to check out what's here?"[break][break]

She scanned their immediate area, seeking some game to play or ride to enjoy. Almost immediately, she spotted the Tauros Riding game just as a teenage girl was flung off the mechanical bull.[break][break]

On the other hand, a Magikarp fishing game stall stood at the opposite side of the boulevard, offering a calmer experience for carnival-goers.[break][break]

"Do you have a preference?" she asked Temp.

"Yeah? I kind of thought it was like..." A pause. Temp scrunches up his face a bit as he thinks of a polite way to say 'he's like when my dogs follow me around'. It creeps into being a bit too long before he shrugs it off.[break][break]

"Well, I'd love to spend some time with you." His tone is warm and inviting and hopefully covers up what might have been a social faux pass. Whoops. Sorry, Hitoshi Inoue.[break][break]

Yumi Hasegawa then asks for his preferences. Tempest already knows he would lose at the fishing game; he doesn't have the patience for something so delicate.[break][break]

"Tauros riding sounds good to me!" It was a little more wild, after all. He winks and gently nudges Yumi's shoulder. "Want to see who can stay on longer?"

Yumi arched an eyebrow at the silence trailing Temp's unfinished comment, but when he shrugged and moved on, so did she. She turned her full attention to the Tauros Riding game and visibly paled.[break][break]

"Definitely not me," she said, laughing despite the mental images running through her head. "I'm going to be thrown flat on my ass within the first fifteen seconds."[break][break]

However, for some reason, she could imagine Temp doggedly staying on.[break][break]

"You go first," Yumi said, smiling her saccharine smile. "I'll take a video for you so you can send it to your husband." Surely Cillian Quinn would find it amusing.

A chuckle.[break][break]

"You just hope I burst out of my top." A sniff followed by a teasing smirk as he waves down the person running the ride. While there were a few people milling around, few people were actually lining up to challenge the beast.[break][break]

Tempest is quickly seated on it's back. The smell of worn leather and mechanical grease gives an unpleasant mix with the overhang of fried dough filling the air. It turns his stomach, less in nausea and more in a reminder he hadn't eaten yet today.[break][break]

Later, later.[break][break]

Grabbing for the strap provided, Tempest pauses before remembering to turn his hand so his palm faces upwards in the grip. Leans forward to be almost sitting on his hand. Tuck his legs up and grip with his thighs and knees. This was very similar to how he had to ride his underwater pokemon, only with more air and gravity.[break][break]

The Tauros starts with a tinny mechanical recording of a real Tauros, the eyes glowing red and fake as a puff of steam is blown from it's nose. Then the rocking starts, jerky and sudden.[break][break]

Instead of being bucked off right away, Temp persists.[break][break]

Even as it gets faster and faster, the jerking wilder and harsher, it does not end with him landing on the mat. Quite a few people stand around and cheer Tempest on.[break][break]

His feet hit the ground and he only wobbles a little.[break][break]

The guy in charge claps Temp on the back and hands him whatever prize he won, something small in a black box. Not peeking at it, he strolls back over to Yumi Hasegawa.[break][break]

"Get my good side?"

Yumi responded to Temp's teasing comment with only a mild smile, unaffected by the display of charisma. She waited until he was on the back of the mechanical Tauros before starting the recording on her phone.[break][break]

He managed to stay on the entire time, much to her surprise. When he rejoined her outside the queue, she turned her phone around to show him the video.[break][break]

"I've already sent it to your husband," she said. "He can decide."[break][break]

Before Temp could suggest Yumi take her turn, she was already stepping away with the confidence of a woman who expected to be followed.[break][break]

"Maybe we should bring back some souvenirs," she suggested as she neared a Joyland booth. All four of its walls were covered in trinkets and knicknacks.

Tempest gives a very undignified snort in reply, grinning.[break][break]

He follows Yumi Hasegawa, because she was right in her confidence, and Tempest peeks at what he won. He chokes on a laugh before putting on the kind of suave charm he knew he had. Tempest was a slut before he started dating Cillian Quinn, so it was that practiced type of sleazy allure that had gotten him into many other men's beds.[break][break]

"For the lady." His voice is deep and dark and rich with want. But his eyes twinkle with mischief more than lust.[break][break]

The box had some high price (for a carnival) jewelry set. There weren't many people who won a Bull Ride, so a higher ticket item had been on the line. Tempest slides them over to Yumi in offering.[break][break]

Then he breaks character and gives a sharp laugh before winking and glancing back at the booth they were at.[break][break]

"Don't think this would suit me or Cillie." Tempest had never been much for trinkets, anyway.

Knowing Temp was married to one of the underbosses of Team Rocket shielded Yumi from much of the suave charm he deployed while handing her the box of jewelry. Instead of swooning, she blinked in alarm at the offering.[break][break]

"They really gave this away as a prize?" she asked, disbelieving. Finally, she took the box from him and examined the set with a critical eye. "I doubt any of this is as valuable as they want people to think. I know a pawnbroker who could tell me its real worth."[break][break]

Yumi tucked the box away in her purse, destined to forget about it until several days later. Then she turned her attention to the trinkets on the booth.[break][break]

"Fair enough. What would suit you two instead?"

"Hmm, make sure to let me know if I handed off a small fortune, right?" Another chuckle.[break][break]

He glanced at the rows of items with a passive eye- there wasn't much for him or his husband. It was mostly little items one would expect. Pieces of shaped plastic, toys, with higher prices because of a special name printed on the side. Poorly shaped stuffed animals made from cheap materials. Shiny pewter shined and shaped into a ring, which would break after a few wears. Just junk, to him at least.[break][break]

"Cillie likes books." The more dry kind, usually, about things like history and science. Though, occasionally, a fantasy or mystery might find it's way to his husband's hands. "I like practical things. Blankets, cooking utensils- things to be used instead of sitting on a shelf." He'd never had much use for stuff that's only purpose was to sit around and look pretty.[break][break]

He thinks, briefly, of the tug of war contest a few days ago. The Lugia plushie sitting in a corner of their room next to a Cradilly plush. Sometimes, rarely, there were exceptions.[break][break]

"I will," Yumi promised with a light laugh.[break][break]

She listened as Temp described the sort of things he and Cillian liked—none of which surprised her. Most people, she assumed, preferred things that had some use. Even she, who liked pretty things that sat on shelves, had to agree.[break][break]

"No, nothing like that," she said, shaking her head. Since the souvenir booth didn't satisfy either of them, she turned away from it.[break][break]

"I like expensive things. Perfume, jewelry, clothes. I'm actually working to launch my own fashion brand soon, perhaps by the end of the year."[break][break]

Running the casino had stalled some of her progress in that project. Now that operations had been running smoothly for a couple of months, though, she hoped to return to drawing designs soon.

Temp gives one last, more attentive, glance at the souvenir booth. It's still nothing he's really interested in; there are no last minute discoveries to prove himself a hypocrite in Yumi Hasegawa's eyes. Shame.[break][break]

He pushes away with her to follow. They seem to idly be wandering towards the food stalls as they chat. It reminds Tempest that he hasn't eaten.[break][break]

"Ah, don't know too much about most of that." Tempest raises a hand to flick his own earring- it's dark and shiny, a hint of red at the end and white cracking at the base. Some symbols have been carved into it in bright red, the same that matches the thin stripe of makeup Tempest wears under his eyes. They hang from thin metal threads.[break][break]

She might recognize them as scales if she decides she cares enough to look close.[break][break]

"I made these. My people- well, my tribe, we value craftsmanship a lot. We use more natural materials, so you'd never see anything we make on a rich woman's neck. Not gaudy enough." Amused and wistful.

The sickeningly sweet aroma of carnival snacks filled the air as Yumi and Temp passed into a section designated for food stalls. She also hadn't eaten, but most of what passed as "snacks" at the fair turned her stomach.[break][break]

She examined Temp's earring from afar. A closer inspection would indeed have revealed the natural materials used in its creation, but she minded his personal space and did not draw near.[break][break]

"Gaudiness is not the mark of richness or wealth," Yumi said, with more seriousness than anything she'd displayed thus far. She was Old Money, and everyone who was Old Money knew that.[break][break]

Without another word of explanation, she turned her attention back to the food stalls. "I'd like some cotton candy, I think. Want some?"

"Eh, when you're poor it all looks the same." Gaudy, with some envy. Tempest had grown up with a family who loved him, with a community who cared for him. But every person he knew had been one thread shy of homeless. To someone like Yumi Hasegawa, had she had a different mentality, he would be little more than gutter trash.[break][break]

Those pretty baubles people wore just meant they had more than you. Money they could just throw away for useless rocks. Every person in his boat had known they were worth less than the shiny things they decorated themselves with.[break][break]

But Tempest wasn't here to bring the mood down or mire himself in old memories. He'd been well off for a while yet, having married into money. Even before that, his adult life he had clawed himself up from 'poverty' to 'lower middle class' with his own hard work[break][break]

They can agree the fair food isn't much, at least.[break][break]

The stuff fried in oil usually made his stomach ache and Tempest didn't like sweets. The offer of the Cotton Candy, pure sugar, has his wrinkle his nose and quickly shake his head 'no'.[break][break]

"Nah. Thanks for the offer, though." His stomach protests again when he thinks of just turning away. Glancing at what was offered, he relents on... something. "I'd take a caramel apple, though."
