It should come as no surprise to absolutely anyone when the Carnival spits a deeply inebriated Skyler out onto the golden sands of Slateport Beach. The ocean brine is a balm against her heated, pink-dusted cheeks, against the sweat that stubbornly clings to the back of her neck.

If the captain had a modicum of self-preservation, she would've called it a day then and there, and would've stumbled her merry way back home. Alas, Skyler had never been accused of possessing a healthy amount of common sense. Or any, at all. And she'd never been one to forfeit a fight, not even a perceived one.

Even for Skyler standards, she'd consumed an unholy amount of alcohol. The world was a dizzying array of colors and shapes, and it burst out of her lips in a hungry smirk against the multicolored lights of the Carnival.

At least she'd kept both of her flip-flops this time around.

It's with this thought that she dives back into the crowded streets, willing herself to get lost in the throng of people and nicking a vodka bottle along the way.

Alcohol had lost a lot of its numbing power on Elisabeth Fiorelli, her immunity to poison a bitter irony that denied her access to her usual vices of choice.[break][break]

That didn't prevent her from indulging anyway. Placebo effects could have their own potency, too.[break][break]

Arceus, she wished she was drunk for this, though. Whatever this 'Funtasia' was, the performers dancing about the square were preventing her from finding her way out of Slateport Beach easily and stealthily. Tired of fighting the mass of slack-jawed bystanders, she leaned against a nearby wall and sulked, drinking vodka that didn't give her the buzz she craved.[break][break]

Rumors of a rare Pokemon had led the underboss here for intelligence, hiding behind sunglasses and casualwear that was a stark departure from her favored skirts and dresses. T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers felt odd, but they served their purpose.[break][break]

Or would, for most of the dull-brained citizenry that didn't know her from a fly on the wall. An AQUA member, however...?[break][break]

Elisabeth's heart sank as she caught sight of a drunken skyler dross out of the corner of her eye. Fuck, she mouthed, suddenly attempting to weasel her way through the immobile bodies. Frustratingly, they pushed back.[break][break]

It was less that Skyler was privy to League intel and more that she was in possession of an unerring sense to find trouble wherever she went - for herself and whoever stood in her presence. It should be a statistical impossibility to find Elisabeth Fiorelli in this crowd, in a disguise of sorts no less.

It was as if the more the Rocket Underboss tried to hide, the more Skyler's attention felt subconsciously drawn to her. Like a particularly stubborn pest.

To add insult to injury, she hadn't even been paying attention to her surroundings, too busy biting into the flesh of a caramelized peach and enjoying its juiciness.

Her eyes have a hard time focusing, but she blinks the haze away just in time to lock eyes with Elisabeth Fiorelli - or her sunglasses. It doesn't matter, not really, not when recognition sharpens into steely intent.

Skyler's lips pull into a deeply satisfied smirk.

Quickly, she starts pushing back against the crowd, uncaring for the elbows being stuck in other people's faces, and the resulting shouts left in her single-minded wake. She disappears often, only to pop back up again, closer.

Buttercup is breathed against the cooling late afternoon air, lost somewhere amid the crowd. But her eyes never stray from a face she'd recognize anywhere.

Was she after revenge? Justice? A good time bullying the Rocket member?

Who knows.

In retrospect, putting her face on that Amigo profile with her full name on it wasn't the brightest idea that Elisabeth Fiorelli had ever had.[break][break]

This belated thought stabbed her consciousness as the figure of skyler dross approached, growing closer and closer -- like a Sharpedo silently stalking a boat while circling beneath the water.[break][break]

She could swear she heard the threat of the word 'Buttercup' whispered on the air.[break][break]

Elsewhere, perhaps, Elisabeth would face the good Captain head-on. Here, though? Among however many civilians and Pokemon trainers? Realistically, if two dozen average trainers with Rattata and Magikarp joined in to assist skyler dross, it would still leave the underboss in an undesirable position.[break][break]

Desperate times called for desperate measures.[break][break]

"Get out of my way," she snapped at a man taking a photo of the performance in front of them, shoving him aside to take the only available avenue for moving forward: the parade floats carving a single path through the crowd.[break][break]

Thorny vines shot through the earth, fueled by the underboss's resentment for her situation at hand as they lifted her towards a nearby float of a giant, grinning Sunflora surrounded by several Sunkern. Gasps from the audience suggested some thought this was part of the performance, and the annoying flash of photography ensured she'd be on someone's Pokegram in the morning.[break][break]

Thankfully, the floats appeared to mostly be animatronic; the lack of people made it easier to leap from float to float with the assistance of her Avatar powers, doing her best to outpace the woman behind her in a quest for an exit.[break][break]

She could feel those keen eyes following her, nonetheless.
