“Keep up, Noodle!” he chimes to the little shinx as he tumbles after Lam’s quick strides. Taking it as a challenge, the little cat darts forward—outpacing his trainer. And promptly crashing into the feet of ollie morales. Lam’s hand lifts in greeting. “Hey Ollie! How goes?” His smile is friendly and easygoing, posture genuinely relaxed for what feels like the first time in several days, despite all appearances of appearing as lackadaisical as ever while at work.[break][break]

The learning curve as gym leader is steep, and a little stressful, but he’s managing.[break][break]

Green eyes shift away for a moment, sun-freckled face searching the open plain on the edge of Ever Grande for the flitting figure he now knows resides here, courtesy of the AQUA initiative. The tapu koko, drawn by familiarity and the fact that it was coaxed out, soon comes to hover near them. Plumage as bright as ever in the sunlight.[break][break]

“Got somethin’ for ya this time.” Unlike the last time he encountered the island deity, Lam is prepared. His head nods respectfully to the Tapu Koko, before he pulls a container of bright yellow pinap berries out. Fresh from his garden that morning. He’s not sure how often this tapu koko takes offerings, but it’s a sign of honor from Lam. As an Alolan, it’s important to appeal to the guardian. A sign of his desire for its approval and guidance.[break][break]

What any native of Hau’oli and Mele Mele as a whole might do.[break][break]

A sheepish grin finds its way back to Ollie. “Thanks for helping me out with this, by the way. Felt rude to not have something the last time I encountered it.” Even if the surprise of meeting tapu koko had been exactly that—a surprise. It hadn’t sat well with Lam.

[break][break] The shiny Shinx was a welcome sight, bringing a smile to his face as he leaned over, rubbing a hand affectionately between the cat's ears.

[break][break] "Hey Lam! Goin' well!" His smile is bright and matches the other's own, carefree and enthusiastic as it were. Ollie liked to hang out with Lam; he found the other man pleasant company, especially compared to some of the more moody members of the League.

[break][break] It seemed that the other's presence didn't only attract Ollie's sunny demeanor. It attracted one other too.

[break][break] The Head Ranger jolted at the sight of the Island Diety, watching curiously as @lam pulled something from his pocket. 'Lam's smart,' Ollie thinks. He hadn't thought to bring anything. He should've, considering his last interaction with Jirachi and his sister.

[break][break] A lip rolls between his teeth as he thinks about it, before he blinks when Lam turns to him.

[break][break] "Sure, anytime dude." Ollie shrugs his shoulders, attempting to look casual, when in reality he feels anything but. The aftermath of the events of Resurfaced Treasure still weighed on him, but his responsibility to the Rangers and by consequence of that, AQUA were far more important. Watching over TAPU KOKO like they were a babysitting a kid... seemed like all in a day's work, if you were a member of AQUA. Supposedly, anyway.

[break][break] "So," he says instead, steering the conversation as he pins the other with a curious gaze. "What made you wanna come out here?" He gestures with a nod towards the diety, who seems to be inspecting those Pinap berries with a hungry gleam of it's eyes.

[break][break] Ollie could've come out here alone, but it was Lam's idea. Apparently Lam had come here before too.

Noodle certainly appreciates the attention ollie morales bestows, the little shinx chirping happily with each and every scritch and scratch received.[break][break]

“Glad to hear it!” Ollie made for easy company, so it wasn’t a difficult choice to seek him out for this particular request. Even more after their conversation on the mirage island. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he feels less pressure around him. To succeed, to be something more.[break][break]

It’s nice.[break][break]

When Tapu Koko zips into view, Lam’s smile only grows—the reverence held for the Island deity has never once waned. It’s instilled in him, and has been for as long as he can recall. The offering only makes sense.[break][break]

It definitely wasn’t a treat like milk and cookies, but Tapu Koko certainly seemed appeased by the berries Lam offered it. It zips closer, inspecting them with a tilted head before snatching one up.[break][break]

A bright grin spreads across his face as it examines the treat more closely, then bites a chunk out of it. “Glad you like it,” he says with a nod, continuing to hold the container out in case it chooses to take the rest.[break][break]

“Hm?” His attention moves back to the head ranger, brows raised curiously as the question is posed. “Oh, well, I guess I just wanted to see how Tapu Koko is doing,” he answers, and it’s not untrue, though maybe a little generic.[break][break]

He considers a lengthier answer, his weight shifting from foot to foot. “After everything,” he flaps his arm in its sling, bound up in a cast, to refer to the island. The fighting and the recovery they’re all making in the aftermath, “it’s sort of just nice to see something familiar.”[break][break]

Not just because he’s met Tapu Koko before, but because it’s a piece of Mele Mele. Of the home where he grew up. Something reliably comfortable and reassuring.

He never had an inkling to see Jirachi, or the Tapus, or any of the legendary pokemon that the League happened to have in it's custody. He still sometimes shuddered when he thought about the damage that the Heatran had done to that bunker with DEREK HOFFMAN. While impressive, it had definitely been a scary sight to see.

[break][break] The Head Ranger let out a sigh.

[break][break] When he'd first come to Hoenn, a hopeful boy on a promise, he'd never thought things would be like this. Even when he'd come back, after Kalos, he was sure that things would be different. He'd been running from responsibility his whole life — up until it's grabbed him and shoved him into his seat.

[break][break] "At least we can weather it together, huh?" he said, lips twisted into a crooked grin.

[break][break] "I hear you're working on something for Lilycove. You excited about that?" It would still be a few months away, but Ollie had heard inklings of a tournament being set up in the next year.

[break][break] "We definitely need somethin' to cheer us up."

[break][break] "Not just the people in the Amnesty program, either. But just the Ranger Corps in general. Ya know?"

“Tapu koko is special to the people of Mele Mele, y’know?” Lam adds after a beat, hoping it further clarifies what he’d meant. “Sort of grew up revering it, so having the opportunity to visit the one that resides here in Hoenn is a bit special.” It goes beyond the simple wish to see all legendaries. Personal, in a way.[break][break]
And Lam likes to think that Tapu Koko likes him enough, from the way it allows him to reach out and pat the feathered ridge upon its head as it snacks. He smiles at the sight.[break][break]
Then the flow of conversation shifts slightly and Lam feels the weight of it. Heavy on his shoulders. “yeah, sure we can.” His lips press together as his brow furrows. “I suppose I just wish nothing had to be weathered at all.”[break][break]
He finds himself grateful for the next deviation. “Oh– yeah! Well, I’m not the coordinator. I’m just helping out But it should be a great time, the way things are looking. Like you said– It’s needed.” He nods along, “yeah, for sure. How’s that going, by the way? –Amnesty.”

[attr="class","postbody"] "Oh!" Ollie blinks at the clarification, the puzzle pieces coming together. Unlike lam logan, Ollie couldn't relate to the closeness that he felt to his hometown. It wasn't that he didn't sometimes think about Pallet Town, or Kanto for that matter, but whenever he did, it was filled with ideas of Eva Morales or Caleb Harcourt, not any legendary pokemon.

[break][break] But he understood that not all people felt that way. After all, most people had stronger ties to their childhood home than him.

[break][break] Not everyone had spent half a lifetime trying to run away from it.

[break][break] "Yeah, that makes sense." He grinned. "I'm glad that you're able to do that."

[break][break] His brow furrowed.

[break][break] "I s'ppose the legendary birds are like that for me, but, " He scratched his cheek. "Can't say I feel the same."

[break][break] Or maybe he did, somewhere, subconsciously. Was it what drew him to Articuno's avatar, Laurence Anderson?

[break][break] He's glad for the slight reprieve in conversation, excited for the upcoming tournament on his own, but his expression dampens slightly when his friend brings up Amnesty. Ollie knows Lam enough to know that it isn't a trap — that Lam isn't the type to steer him into a conversation, only to clamp down on him like an Ursaring's trap, yet he couldn't help but feel a moment of apprehension anyway. Especially considering all the conversation around it lately, it was only natural.

[break][break] "Oh well, same as ever, I think. Lately, it's gotten a lot of traction — what with all the Rocket defectors being aired." He was referring, of course, to Remiel Calcifet and Isaac Merlo, the most popular of the set. "Hey - what do you think about it?"

“Me too.” Lam’s head bobs as his replies, “it’s not always something most consider possible, so. Might as well take the opportunity if I can.” He’s not exactly
“No?” he shrugs a shoulder, unbothered by the difference, “To each their own, really.” He’s quick to grin though, glancing over from Tapu Koko to Ollie. “The birds are pretty cool, though, not gonna lie. Probably not much of a surprise to hear coming from me.”[break][break]
Certified bird nerd, twenty-four/seven, and all.[break][break]
The conversation shifts, though, and Lam flows with it–content to talk with Ollie about just about anything while he mimes a snip snap motion with his hands at Tapu Koko. The island spirit lifts its own pincers and mimics the gesture before spinning up into the air– sparks kicking off its movements.[break][break]
Eager to battle, it would seem. Even if playfully so.[break][break]
Lam sends out his altaria to chase Tapu Koko through the sky.[break][break][break]
“Oh yeah? That’s probably good,” he replies with a tilt of his head, “it’s a productive goal to work toward, I think.” Lam glances over at the head ranger, curiosity causing his head to tilt slightly. “Me? Well.. I think it’s an important program if it’s utilized correctly. Giving people a purpose can be important. Life changing, even.”[break][break]
His eyebrows rise when Ollie clarifies.[break][break]
“Oh, well, I mean…I don’t think it’s always so cut and dry the way a lot of people seem to think about Rocket. There are, like, layers to it, y’know?” His time out on the Mirage Island had more than proved it with some of the interactions he’d had.

lam's nose wrinkles. "okay, i'm not that far gone." though he might have a button down in his closet at home that's covered in a pidove pattern. but that's totally different than legendary merch.[break][break]
he isn't usually much of a fan merch guy anyway. at least not usually.[break][break]
it's not a bad concept, in theory. with programs like this, there's always potential for things to go off the rails if they aren't handled right. he's confident in ollie morales's abilities, though.[break][break]
"just that some people are easier to reach than others," he shrugs. "even rockets. i don't think every single member is so extreme. just like not everyone among the league is diehard in their ideals and stances." himself included. especially himself.

His eyes move from the pair in the sky over to the head ranger. “If we force defection, does that really make us any better? No matter how noble we claim it is? You’re right, it’s important that it should hinge on their decision.”[break][break]
A sigh follows Ollie’s words. “That’s fair, but it might not take more resources if the avenues are expanded, y’know? If there were more options, maybe it’d allow for more rehabilitation opportunities.” His head cants to the side, “Like, maybe not all of ‘em are suited to being rangers. Maybe they’d be better as gym trainers…or desk staff. Something that feels just as purposeful.”

He doesn’t think that he’d force someone to do anything, really. Wouldn’t it defeat the purpose of choice, or wanting to change? He thinks back to when he and Rook first got together—how pissed he’d been when his partner hadn’t quickly cleaned up his thieving habit. Or simply quit the lifestyle altogether.[break][break]
Sure, Lam had lost his cool about it when the straw eventually broke the camel’s back, but even then the choice to stop had been Rook’s, in the end. His active choice to set it aside.[break][break]
And that had been far more meaningful than if Lam were to have given him a harsh ultimatum.[break][break]
The same applied for Rocket, he thought. “I guess I just meant that it shouldn’t be something we even consider doing.”[break][break]
Lam nods, waiting as Ollie follows his train of thought. A grin cracks across his mouth, and above them, Tapu Koko brightens the sky with a crackle of electricity. “I’ve been known to have good ideas from time to time,” he jokes with a laugh.[break][break]
It seems like a logical step, though. To find other outlets so that different defectors didn’t necessarily feel lumped into one program. “I think gym training is a great way to foster good relationships. Not just with civilians and the league, but with pokemon. It really promotes that idea of partnership, rather than viewing them as tools.”[break][break]
And as the team work gym guy, that was like, his whole gig.

[attr="class","postbody"] A small part of Ollie disagreed. He wished that there was a way to force defection, because then it would mean that Rocket would fall apart, and half the reason that his job was so complicated these days would fall apart with it.

[break][break] But he didn't voice that. Instead, he remained upbeat and positive.

[break][break] "This really is a good idea, Lam. You're a genius!" Ollie grinned, inspired suddenly to put this plan into motion. To make it more real than a conversation between friends.

[break][break] The wheels in his mind were already turning. Who he'd reached out to in addition to Lam. After all, this couldn't just be the effort of just the two of them.

[break][break] Maybe CIAN MAHER would have some thoughts too, being the posterchild for Rocket defection.
