Haina Desert - Pokemon Sun & Moon

A VAST DESERT LANDSCAPE dotted with rocky structures and monoliths. Curiously, they almost seem humanmade, though there are no signs of people here. Shrubbery and turquoise crystals are encrusted throughout the bright and sweltering dryland. Occasionally, you may stumble upon rocky terrain that is difficult to traverse.[break][break]

Mysterious obelisks with missing seals are situated throughout the desert. No one knows why they exist, or who made them.

Yumi stood in the center of the campsite she and DANNY HALL had chosen, directing her Bewear as the Pokémon unpacked their equipment. Under her supervision, Koguma had pitched two tents and was now setting up the kitchen area.[break][break]

When she was satisfied with the arrangement, Yumi reached into her bag and pulled out some provisions they had brought. A few were ready-to-eat meal kits (just heat them up!), but some items were raw ingredients like the strange-looking Sand Radish.[break][break]

"Do you know how to cook, Danny?" the woman asked her companion. "Because I don't."[break][break]

it isn't until yumi calls out to him that he turns to look at her over his shoulder.

"my cooking is about as good as my gardening."

which isn't very good, as evident by how he's trying to cultivate a garden in the middle of a desert.

he dusts his palms off and walks back over to her.

"i think we can use the sand radish and sprinkle it on top of those meals you brought."

"That's not really an answer, you know," Yumi said, frowning at Danny as he hunched over the dirt. She didn't know how skilled he was at gardening. From where she sat, he could either be a genius or totally inept.[break][break]

Still, Yumi set to work chopping up the Sand Radish as he recommended. At least she could use a knife and heat up the meal kits on the portable gas stove they'd brought.[break][break]

The sky darkened as the sun set. A breeze brought a chill to the camp, and Yumi swapped out her Bewear for her Braixen to start a fire for warmth.[break][break]

"Dinner's ready," she said as she portioned out the meal into two camping bowls, adding equal amounts of radish to both of them. "Get it while it's hot."[break][break]

The first bite was surprisingly delicious and warming. She eagerly tucked in, savoring the spicy-sweet flavor of the meat and vegetables covered in sauce.[break][break]

"So, have you been working for Team Rocket long?" Yumi asked her companion, seeking to drive back any uncomfortable silence with conversation.[break][break]

Yumi's chest swelled with pride at the compliment. She wasn't that great of a cook, not really, but she had learned a little from the past year living with Mei Liu. Yumi could make basic meals, enough for her own survival, and heat up meal kits.[break][break]

"A girl?" she echoed, her eyebrows rising into her forehead with surprise. Then her smile turned into an amused smirk, and she scooted closer to Danny, as if a co-conspirator to a secret.[break][break]

"Were you in love with her? Or was she your sister or something?" Hitoshi Inoue had joined Team Rocket's Hoenn branch because of Yumi, but she was neither of those things to him.[break][break]

A sudden squawking filled the air, cutting through the peaceful evening like a knife.

Yumi tilted her head at Danny, trying to imagine this man—who she did not know too well—madly in love with someone else. She wondered, too, what this girl had been like.[break][break]

Quietly, she noted his use of the past tense.[break][break]

"What was her name?" Yumi asked, idly, in between mouthfuls of dinner. "What happened to her?"[break][break]

There were only a few options, made slightly more varied by virtue of being members of Team Rocket. Death was one, defection another.[break][break]

The squawking grew louder. Frowning, Yumi opened the Pokéball containing her Scream Tail and ordered it to investigate. It waddled off into the darkness.[break][break]

She shook her head at Danny's question. "I can't say I have. I've had crushes, sure. I almost had one on my bodyguard when we were kids, actually."[break][break]

Yumi laughed, the sound underscored with a certain fondness.[break][break]

"But love like what you felt? I don't think it's for me. I don't think I'm meant to have it." She said this without a hint of sadness in her voice, but she turned her face away from Danny anyway, not trusting her eyes to betray her.[break][break]

"Serena Malcolm. she, uh, died not too long ago."

hurt flashes across his expression for the briefest of moments like the crackling fire before them.

he finishes what's left of his dinner before setting the bowl down.

"why not? you're as deserving of love as anyone else is."

Yumi dropped her conspiratorial attitude at the somberness of his words. She didn't know him well, or his Serena person he'd loved, so she felt no pang of empathy for him. But she knew better than to treat such an admission so lightly.[break][break]

"How unfortunate."[break][break]

A sudden call from her Scream Tail was a welcome distraction. Ignoring Danny's question, Yumi put down her empty bowl and stood up. "I'm going to see what's over there. Come if you want, or stay here to guard the camp."[break][break]

She trudged off, not waiting for his answer.[break][break]

When she reached her Pokémon, well past the edge of the edge of their campfire, she turned on the flashlight of her phone. The pale beam illuminated Scream Tail's discovery: the fresh corpse of a Buzzwole, torn apart by wicked beaks and talons.[break][break]

Yumi screamed, alarmed.[break][break]
