And it doesn't take long to spy just what might be the problem: A strange landmass lies ahead of them, seemingly having appeared overnight seeing as to how she'd never noticed them on her flights towards Dewford.[break][break]

First instincts tell her to approach with caution, a gentle tap on the Salamence's shoulder getting him to steadily descend over the waters. If this were somehow another one of Maldecena's jokes, she'd have to question why he hadn't gone out of his way to catch a few more eyes with cryptic questions. Her fingers hook under the strap of her backpack, readjusting it as she takes a deep breath.[break][break]

It should not surprise Cillian to see Eris Halla.[break][break]

Their last meeting had been almost amicable. Though they'd parted with his words of warning, he had wished her no harm.[break][break]

Now, the cold countenance of an underboss would greet the girl without mercy. It begins to RAIN as the air PRESSURE shifts.[break][break]

"Still meddling where you're not welcome, I see."[break][break]

The fog pulls together at his command, swirling around avatar and vessel.

Those are the two emotions stirring deep in her core the moment she sees the darkened palettes of a familiar creature. Lugia - majestic, oppressive - emerges from the water with fog and storm at her beck and call. Rain pricks against her skin, sharp and cold as the welcome she receives.[break][break]

And in that instance, a tense silence is all that she offers, her palm held flat against Teostra's shoulder as the Salamence flaps his wings and comes to an abrupt stop. Not even the momentum of his motions is enough to override the tides that Lugia commands, a snarl muffled by the curtain of rain that separates them.[break][break]

When first approaching this island, she hadn't known she was about to meddle but now that she's been alerted to his presence, she knows that there must be something brewing further inland. But does she risk life and limb just trying to get in there? She's paralysed by his mere gaze.[break][break]

It's cutting, cold. Eris Halla has seen his softer side, hugged him and mourned with him and fought by his side, but the cruelty of the sound that escapes his lips suggests the closing of a chapter. She'd made her choice.[break][break]

There is no need to command Lugia; she knows his intent.[break][break]

As she lifts from the water's surface, the fearsome gales borne before her violet wings become ICY WINDS that freeze breath and bite to bone. Even Cillian feels the shift in the air, gooseflesh rising on his arms despite the body heat of the legend beneath.[break][break]

"You know I won't."[break][break]

Can't is the hidden echo, but his word choice is deliberate. Just as she had chosen to betray them, he has made a choice in turn.

It's the wrong thing to say in hopes of brokering peace. Cillian's jaw clenches, eyes narrowed at the name of a man who should by rights be dead. Cil's still not entirely sure where the Ralts had taken his would-be victim, but the fact that he'd survived the hole in his gut—[break][break]

He closes off the thought. Isaac wasn't here.[break][break]

Eris Halla was.[break][break]

"When he's cold in the ground," the underboss spits. "No sooner."[break][break]

Once, Cillian had warned Eris Halla of the dangers of leaving Rocket.[break][break]

Now, as THUNDER crashes overhead, she'll learn how serious he'd been. The arc of lightning that streaks from the heavens aims not for her Salamence, but for the girl herself.[break][break]

Cillian closes off grief, regret, empathy. Attempts to empathize with her, with others who'd wound up going over to the League, have only caused him pain. They've only made his job harder. They've only made it hurt when the time comes where he must honour his word and Rocket's code.[break][break]

He channels that pain into anger, a fury that reflects in his eyes as they're lit by the lightning's flash.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]As lightning falls from the skies to deliver judgement, Teostra flips himself and turns his belly to the sky, forcing Eris off his back as he takes the attack head-on. And his screeches will fill her head as she watches him burn up, helplessly grasping at thin air as she begins to fall.[break][break]

Down towards the bitter seas, they both drop without the slightest bit of grace. But a bond forged beyond comprehension beckons forth the wondrous -[break][break]

Dread surges forth in a burst of pink, an ephemeral chain weaving itself into existence and encircling the Salamence. It spins slowly, then gradually grows faster as the dragon rouses with a grunt, then growls. His wings, though shaky, tuck up as he eases into the dive. And he'll snatch his trainer right from her fall, abruptly spreading his wings to coast along the water's surface.[break][break]

There will be no running from this one. Anger gives birth to a monstrous strength as the Salamence continues his flight path towards Cillian Quinn and his patron. A Mystical Power blooms right at the underboss' feet, exploding the sand he stands upon in an attempt to catch him off guard.[break][break]

And as Teostra draws closer in an Outrage, he'll raise his claws and take a mighty swing.

There is no satisfaction in victory. There never is, when the battle involves a former friend. Instead, Cillian knows only a cold and growing emptiness as he watches Eris fall.[break][break]

It turns to anger as something intervenes.[break][break]

Mesprit?[break][break]

The pixie was the most powerful Pokémon he knew Eris to possess, and so his thoughts naturally jump to such conclusions. But this tells him nothing of what the strange, ethereal chain would do. And what it seems to do is to save the Salamence from its fall.[break][break]

Kneeling on his patron's back as he was, Cillian can't rise in time to dodge the MYSTICAL POWER that lashes out toward him. It leaves no physical mark but cuts quick through his psyche in a flash of blinding pain, and the OUTRAGED Salamence might have had its opportunity to end Rocket's underboss if not for Lugia's intervention.[break][break]

With a deafening shriek of rage, the Guardian of the Sea summons its wrath. A WHIRLPOOL forms beneath them, its dark vortex like the eye of a storm. She'd attempt to use the Salamence's momentum against it as she pulls back into its depths. She flares her wings to shield Cillian from the attack and, should the dragon follow, collapses the whirlpool on top of dragon and rider.

The chain shatters, the dragon having exhausted the last of his strength into a swing that meets nothing. But momentum continues to carry them right towards the centre of the vortex. With only seconds to decide their fate, Eris is focused upon her Salamence, recalling him as she shuts her eyes and attempts to shield his pokeball from their impending doom.[break][break]

Cold as the winter winds and rain may be, the new chill that enters the fray is one that directly torments the soul. A tiny pixie appears in a swirl of pink, guided by a Future Sight as their tail wraps tight around Eris' wrist. And their gaze falls upon the harbinger, expressions unchanging as an uncomfortable pressure begins to build in the ears.[break][break]

Conflict, a constant state of being. There's no time for them to fully unravel the tangle in this one's heart, but their presence will be felt as they graze and gently tug beneath the surface.[break][break]

Then, just as quickly as that sensation surges, it vanishes with both pixie and child.
